Choosing the Proper Gun for Your ApplicationConventional Air Spray

Conventional air spray technology is easy to use, delivers a Class A automotive finish quality, but has the lowest transfer efficiency (<25%) of all technologies.

High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP)

HVLP was developed to improve transfer efficiency over traditional conventional air spray technology. HVLP transfer efficiency is a minimum of 65% as long as the pressure at the aircap does not exceed 10 psi (0.7 MPa, 0.7 bar). Finish quality is similar to air spray, however the spray rates are lower than conventional air spray. In some areas, HVLP technology is required to comply with environmental standards.

Low Volume Low Pressure (LVLP)

LVLP technology is a variation on HVLP technology. LVLP uses a low volume of air to atomize the coating compared to the high volume of air for HVLP. At 16 psi (0.1 MPa, 1.1 bar), LVLP offers the same transfer efficiency as HVLP. Due to the low CFM requirements, LVLP is an excellent option when shop air is limited.

Compliant

Complaint technology delivers transfers efficiency equal to or better than HVLP as long as the inlet pressure to the gun does not exceed 35 psi (0.24 MPa, 2.4 bar). The finish quality is comparable to air spray, air consumption is lower than HVLP, and the production rates are higher than HVLP. This technology is also capable of atomizing higher viscosity materials.

Problem Cause Solution

RIGHT

Normal pattern. No action necessary.

WRONG Heavy top or bottom pattern

Dirty or damaged aircap or fluid nozzle.

Rotate aircap 180º. If pattern follows aircap, problem is in aircap. Clean and inspect. If pattern is not corrected, replace aircap.

If pattern does not follow the aircap, the problem is with the fluid nozzle. Clean and inspect the nozzle. If the pattern in not corrected, replace nozzle.

WRONG Split pattern

Pressure too high for viscosity of material being sprayed

Reduce air pressure and increase material viscosity.

Correct pattern by narrowing fan size with spray width adjustment knob.

WRONG

Dirty or distorted air horn holes. Clean and inspect aircap. If pattern is not corrected, replace aircap.

Gun spitting

Air getting into paint stream. Check if cup is empty and fill if needed. Tighten fluid nozzle. Check and tighten needle packing nut. Check fluid nozzle for damage.

Will not spray

1) Cup is empty.

2) Fluid adjustment knob turned too far clockwise

1) Fill cup.

2) Adjust knob counterclockwise.

Excessive air blowing back

1) Loose fluid nozzle.

2) Damaged fluid nozzle seal.

1) Tighten fluid nozzle.

2) Replace seal.

WRONG Heavy pattern or orange peel

1) Air pressure too low.

2) Gun held too close to surface.

1) Increase air pressure.

2) Hold gun about 6-8 inches (15-200 mm) from surface.

How to Build an Entire Sharpe SystemIn order to set up an effective paint system, you need to ensure that you choose the proper compressor, correctly install the proper line size, and remove moisture and contaminates from your atomizing air.

Choosing the right compressor1. Makealistofallofyourairtools,i.e.guns/grinders/etc.

2. Determine the total CFM and psi requirements for all of your equipment

3. Add 25% for leakage and possible future equipment to determine final CFM and psi requirements.

Properlinesizingselectionandinstallation4. Install 5 feet of flexible hose from your compressor to your main

air line stand line

5. Main air line stand pipe should not be smaller than the compressor outlet size

6. We suggest using ¾ inches to 1 ¼ inches cooper or galvanized pipe for your main air line

7. To avoid moisture contamination, you will need 25 feet of main airline before your first outlet to allow for proper cooling of the compressed air — 50 feet is optimal.

8. Main line air pipe should be mounted to allow for 4 inches of drop per 50 feet to assure proper drainage.

9. One last suggestion is to route your drop line to the gun up then down (layout on page 28)

10. Close ball valve at each drop and drain the drops daily or weekly depending on the air conditions

Remove moisture and contaminates

Compressed Air Humidity (CAW) can cause your finish to have poor gloss, adhesion, durability and cloudiness in the finish, which leads to costly rework.

11. CAW can be measured using Sharpe’s 6760HT humidity tester.

12. To remove moisture and contaminates i.e. dirt, oil, etc., we suggest using the Sharpe 6910 with an air regulator. The 6910 is a simple two-stage system. The first stage is a 5 micron air filter and the second stage is a .01 micron coalescer. The air regulator assures proper air pressure to your gun at all times.

13. If moisture is still a problem, we suggest using one of our three stage systems, Sharpe’s 6760 Dryaire Desiccant system or the 6770 Dryaire Membrane system. These systems are similar to the 6910, butaddathirdstagethatwillmaintain0%humidityat–40°F.

14. We suggest shutting the main line air off at the end of the day to ensure the auto drains work properly.

15. It is a good practice to drain your compressor daily.

Air Filter w/Overnight Drain(Part No. 22601)MaintenanceTo maintain maximum filtering efficiency and to avoid excessive pressure drop, the filter must be kept clean. Bowl drainage is automatic with the overnight drain; however, manual draining can also be done by removing the bowl. A visible coating of dirt on the filter element surface or an excessive pressure drop is an indication that cleaning is necessary.

CleaningTo clean, it is not necessary to remove the complete fil-ter from the line. Disassembly is simple and does not require tools. Before disassembly, shut off the air supply and depressurize filter. Clean all parts with cleaning sol-vent and blow out filter body before reassembly. Wash filter element in cleaning solvent and blow out from the inside.

Overnight DrainThe overnight drain (part no. 22631) is simple in design and operation. When the filter bowl is pressurized, the piston travels down against the spring and closes the drain opening. When the bowl is depressurized (i.e.: overnight when system is shut down), the spring lifts the piston from the seal allowing the bowl to drain.

NOTE: The overnight drain can be operated manually at anytime by pushing the piston stem up.

Coalescer w/Overnight Drain(Part No. 22605)InstallationIt is always recommended that a SHARPE air filter be installed upstream of the coalescing filter to remove 5 micron and larger size particles and separate large droplets of moisture from the air line.

MaintenanceNever let the liquid level in the bowl reach the base of the coalescing element.

CleaningTo clean, it is not necessary to remove the complete fil-ter from the line. Disassembly is simple and does not require tools. Before disassembly, shut off the air supply and depressurize coalescer. Clean all parts with clean-ing solvent and blow out body before reassembly. Replace coalescing element (part no. U23075).

Pressure Drop IndicatorThe differential pressure drop indicator on this unit is designed to provide early detection of a clogged coa-lescing filter element. As the filter element becomes clogged the red indicator will start to rise while air is flowing through the unit. When the pressure drop across the element reaches 10-12 psi (0.07-0.08 MPa, 0.7-0.8 bar) the red indicator will be in full view and the element should be replaced. Failure to replace the element when the pressure drop exceeds 10 psi (0.07 MPa, 0.7 bar) will affect your air quality and tool efficiency.

Coalescer with Overnight Drain(Part No. 22602)

InstallationIt is always recommended that a Sharpe air filter be installed upstream of the coalescing filter to remove 5 micron and larger size particles and separate large droplets of moisture from the air line.

Pressure Drop IndicatorThe differential pressure drop indicator on this unit is designed to provide early detection of a clogged coa-lescing filter element. As the filter element becomes clogged the red indicator will start to rise while air is flowing through the unit. When the pressure drop across the element reaches 10-12 psi (.07-.08 MPa, 0.7-0.8 bar) the red indicator will be in full view and the element should be replaced. Failure to replace the element when the pressure drop exceeds 10 psi (.07 MPa, 0.7 bar) will affect your air quality and tool efficiency.

Self-Relieving Air Regulator (Part No. 22604)

MaintenanceIf the air supply is kept clean, this regulator will provide long periods of uninterrupted service. Erratic regulator operation or loss of regulation is most always due to dirt in the diaphragm area and cleaning is in order.

CleaningDepressurize regulator, remove bottom plug, spring valve, and diaphragm. Clean parts with denatured alco-hol, wipe off seat and blow out body with compressed air. Reassemble parts as a unit and screw into regulator before tightening bottom plug Make sure disc is in cen-ter hole in body. Should regulator continue to malfunc-tion, obtain diaphragm/valve repair kit (part no. 22680) and replace parts provided.

Desiccant Housing (Part No. 22603)

InstallationAlways place a moisture filter upstream to remove bulk fluids. Always place a coalescing filter upstream to remove oil. Desiccant coated with oil will not absorb moisture.

MaintenanceA supply of low flow/low humidity air will provide longer desiccant life; whereas, high flow/high humidity air will require more frequent desiccant changes.

Installed in an application with intermittent flow, Sharpe’s desiccant dryer will typically dry air for weeks before silica gel desiccant requires replacement or regeneration.

Desiccant ChangeoutReplace or regenerate the desiccant when the desic-cant beads change to a pink color (the blue gel gradu-ally turns pink indicating it has absorbed moisture to the saturation point). Can be regenerated by heating for 4 hours at 275°F (135°C). To reorder, order desiccant replacement (part no. 6765-1).

MODEL 705FC 1/2 in. IN-LINE FILTER AND COALESCER WITH OVERNIGHT DRAINS

Air Filter with Overnight Drain(Part No. 22601)

MaintenanceTo maintain maximum filtering efficiency and to avoid excessive pressure drop, the filter must be kept clean. Bowl drainage is automatic with the overnight drain, however manual draining can also be done by remov-ing the bowl. A visible coating of dirt on the filter ele-ment surface or an excessive pressure drop is an indication that cleaning is necessary.

CleaningTo clean, it is not necessary to remove the complete fil-ter from the line. Disassembly is simple and does not require tools. Before disassembly, shut off the air sup-ply and depressurize filter. Clean all parts with cleaning solvent and blow out filter body before reassembly. Wash filter element in cleaning solvent and blow out from the inside.

Overnight DrainThe overnight drain is equipped with a float actuated device which automatically ejects liquid contaminates. When the pressure is off, the unit will drain.

SpecificationsAir Inlet 1/2 in. F.P.T.Air Outlet 1/2 in. F.P.T.Air Flow Capacity 115 cfm (3.2 m3/min.)Max. Operating Pressure 175 psi (1.2 MPa, 12 bar)Max. Temperature 150°F (65°C)

IN-LINE FILTERS AND COALESCERS

Coalescer withOvernight Drain(Part No. 22605)

InstallationIt is always recommended that a Sharpe air filter be installed upstream of the coalescing filter to remove 5 micron and larger size particles and separate large droplets of moisture from the air line.

MaintenanceNever let the liquid in the bowl reach the base of the coalescing element.

CleaningTo clean, it is not necessary to remove the complete filter from the line. Disassembly is simple and does not require tools. Before disassembly, shut off the air supply and depressurize coalescer. Clean all parts with cleaning solvent and blow out body before reas-sembly. Replace coalescing element (part no.

Failure to replace the element when the pressure drop exceeds 10 psi (.07 MPa, 0.7 bar) will affect your air quality and tool effi-ciency.
