Eleven wins overall was a respectable total for the Hoosick Falls Central School varsity field hockey team last season, but the key was their performance in the Wasaren League, managing four wins as a result of a number of nail-biters that didn’t go their way.

But Coach Denise Campbell, now in her 11th year at the helm of the Panthers, has eight seniors that will rely on unity and diligence to lead the team. HFCS field hockey has a rich history, having won 15 section-

al championships, more than any other sport at the school. Campbell demand-ed lot of herself when she once suited up for the Panthers, and the players respect her dedication to coaching the sport

All eyes will be on Wasaren League All-Star Sarah McMahon and fellow defender Alicia Bartosik, and well as stalwart goalie Samantha Squires (8 shut-outs). The three have made

the term “gritty defense” synonymous with HFCS field hockey. Senior scoring whiz

Mount Anthony Union High School Field Hockey

Field hockey is a fast game and often described as the quintessential New England sport. It also requires a high level of fitness, coordination and related game tactics as the human body has to adjust not just to a moving projectile, but also to the finesse required in stick handling - all while sprinting up and down the field.

This fall, the Mount Anthony Union High School field hockey team will try to heed the X’s and O’s of Coach Laura Paro’s approach, and in then process, push themselves to greater team heights than in the past

Indications are promising. Paro has on hand a willing group of dedicated athletes who voluntarily spent the sum-mer preparing for their 2008 campaign. In early contests the squad looks fit, motivated and ready to impact the Marble Valley League.

Led by tri-captains Che Albowicz, Stephanie Butterfield and Zoe Sperber, the Lady Patriots will be anchored in goal by stalwart Leah Hart. All-League honoree Lizzie Curtin will seek not only to maintain her scoring prowess of last season (21), but to challenge other senior teammates to step up while setting an example for younger players such team rookies Brenna Elwell, Sam Strubel, and Amber Thomas.

Kayla Brownell will take the departure of the prolific Mary Kay Bornt as motivation to put the ball in the net early and often.

Newcomer Andrea Niles will showcase her trademark tough-ness from the sweeper position, joined also by Karley Morin and Samantha Skott as rookies looking to leave their first mark on this storied team.

Coach Campbell has a very capable and willing collection of athletes to take the field this fall. They should gel into respectable league play, and will be looking for a deep postsea-son run, as their pedigree sug-gests.
