Message from a Lord Fairfax Community College Student and Scholarship RecipientDear Donors of the Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC) Educational Foundation Inc.:
I am Alayna Cooper, a proud LFCC student. Although I excel at my coursework at LFCC, the road to get here has been a difficult one. Many people have fears. I am no exception. I fear schoolwork – especially math, writing and spelling. I have a non-verbal learning disability. I look like everyone else, because my disability is a hidden one. My middle school years were the most difficult. I could not read well, and I was tutored for math. I also started seeing a therapist because my social skills were not maturing as needed. I entered high school with one goal in mind – to graduate on time with my friends. My high school years were very difficult, but I worked hard and used a computer for all of them. I entered the business program and took Web and advanced Web classes. I also scored at the honor’s level on the Standards of Learning exam. This was a great achievement for me.
When I began attending the College last fall, there were several things that were unclear to me – I wasn’t sure what my major should be or what my career goals were. However, my academic advisors and the TRIO Program gave me the guidance I needed to choose a major and decide on a career goal. I am now a full-time student in my second semester of LFCC’s Paralegal Studies Certificate Program. I plan to either graduate from LFCC or transfer to a four-year college, and I would like to pursue a career in family law. The continued support from LFCC employees and the scholarship I was awarded last year have helped to bring me one step closer to achieving my goals.
I cannot thank you enough for the generous contributions that you made to the LFCC Educational Foundation – contributions that have changed my life and the lives of so many other LFCC students. Contributing money toward scholarships is so important, because there are students who can’t afford to go to college, but they want a better life. Scholarships also help students who may not qualify for financial aid but cannot afford tuition and books.
The scholarship that I was awarded last year has helped me tremendously with tuition and books. I am so grateful to have received this scholarship, because, with the way the economy has been, it helps to take the financial burden off of me so that I can focus on paying for my other expenses.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for helping so many students realize their dreams. I know that, on my journey through life, I will be continually thankful for the assistance and support that you have given to our community by helping students attain their goals at LFCC.
Sincerely,
Alayna Cooper LFCC Student and Scholarship Recipient

Foundation HighlightsFollowing are some of the top gifts received in 2008:
1. Fauquier Health contributed $75,000 to the Health Professions Programs Fund, which was used to support LFCC’s health professions programs at the Fauquier Campus.
The funds were used for a variety of projects, including:
• To help fund the salary of a nursing faculty member• To place an advertisement for the Surgical
Technology Program• To purchase equipment for LFCC’s Nurse Aide Training Program
2. Mr. and Mrs. William A. Hazel contributed $25,000 toward the William A. Hazel Family Endowed Scholarship Fund.
After serving his country in the U.S. Army, William A. Hazel moved to Broad Run in 1957 and founded William A. Hazel Inc., a total site development contractor company. For nearly half a century, Hazel and his company have supported Northern Virginia’s economic development and growth through all aspects of site development and road construction.
But Hazel is just as committed to philanthropy. He proved this in 2005 by donating $100,000 through the LFCC Educational Foundation Inc. to establish the William A. Hazel Family Endowed Scholarship, which annually supports full- and part-time LFCC students who live in Fauquier County.
“Education is the basic foundation of everything,” said Hazel, who supported his five children through college. “Community colleges play a critical part in the educational system.”
Hazel recognizes that four-year colleges and universities are bursting at the seams and are sometimes difficult for students to gain acceptance to and afford with rising tuition costs. “The community colleges need to expand in order to give everyone the opportunity to receive an education at a reasonable cost,” Hazel said. “Lord Fairfax means a great deal to the community, because it meets this goal.”

3. Mr. William B. Holtzman contributed $25,000 toward the LFCC General Support Fund, which supports a variety of initiatives, including employee professional development and facility improvements.
For William Holtzman, contributing to LFCC made perfect sense.
“We make our money off the people who live here. I’m a firm believer you have to give back to the community you live and work in,” he said.
Holtzman always knew he wanted to live in the Shenandoah Valley. Even as a youth, when his friends and classmates couldn’t wait to escape to the big cities, he said he knew he was already where he belonged. That’s why, after earning his bachelor’s of science degree in horticulture from Virginia Tech in 1959 and his master’s of science degree from Cornell in 1961, he returned to Mount Jackson, Va.
After working in the local apple industry for 11 years, he decided the time was right to open his own business. In 1972, Holtzman Corp. opened its doors. Today, that start-up business has grown to include Holtzman Oil Corp., Holtzman Propane, Valley Ice, six Burger Kings and two Denny’s restaurants. Holtzman Corp. owns or supplies fuel to over 100 service stations and convenience stores in Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland.
Holtzman has a tremendous commitment to education that has presented itself through his many and various acts of generosity over the years. In 2005, he was on hand to witness the dedication of the Holtzman Alumni Center at Virginia Tech (VT). Named after him, the Center will house the activities and operations of VT’s Alumni Association. His educational philanthropy was continued recently with his four-year donor commitment to LFCC.
“I gave to LFCC, because it offers students from our area education and opportunities and prepares them to be successful,” he said.
Because he believes the school itself can best determine what needs are best addressed with contributions, Holtzman decided not to earmark his donation for a specific program.
“Schools need discretionary funds. Hopefully, this way, LFCC can use the money for whatever programs will best benefit our area’s students,” he said.
Holtzman encourages students to always strive to do the best job possible in every aspect of their lives. “Never do anything halfway. If you’re going to do it, do it right. It’s so important that we instill in our youth a sense of pride in a job well done,” he said.
This belief is obviously something he has encouraged in his own children. His son followed him into

the family business and now heads up his propane and ice companies. His daughter, Jill Holtzman Vogel, was elected in 2007 to the Virginia State Senate. He also has two stepchildren – one is a physician’s assistant in Richmond and the other is studying to be a paralegal.
It is evident that Holtzman has utilized his education and dedication to become successful. However, even with all of his accomplishments, Holtzman remains humble.
“I simply consider myself very lucky to be able to live where I want to live and be successful in a business that I love,” he said.
4. The Bromfield Family contributed $50,111 toward the Edward T. Bromfield Jr. Endowed Scholarship Fund.
Established in 2008, the Edward T. Bromfield Jr. Endowed Scholarship at LFCC will be awarded annually to a Warren County resident seeking further education to enhance practical and intellectual pursuits.
While editor/publisher of Front Royal’s Warren Sentinel, Mr. Bromfield was an early and vigorous proponent of providing higher education opportunities closer to home. When the Virginia Community College System was approved, he was appointed to the site selection committee that chose Middletown as the future location of LFCC. (In the photograph, Mr. Bromfield is at right with Dr. William H. McCoy, LFCC’s first president.) He later served on the College Board from 1975 until 1983, representing Warren County. Mr. Bromfield died in 1998.
Elaine Bromfield is very happy to have this scholarship in her husband’s name, recalling his devotion to LFCC and its expanding growth and reach.
“He felt education to be a critical gift for all, young and old. I hope the scholarship benefits those in Warren County seeking help or needing change,” she said.
5. Mr. George L. Sekel contributed $15,000 to name a room in a College building. The funds will be used to ensure that LFCC students are provided with a comfortable environment that is conducive to learning.
Mr. Sekel worked as a diplomat for nearly 30 years. His late wife, Dolores, took art classes at LFCC, which she thought would be therapeutic for her rheumatoid arthritis. It was there that Mrs. Sekel realized that she

had a talent, and her hobby turned into a career. Mrs. Sekel created realistic renderings in a variety of mediums, including oil, watercolor, charcoal and pastel.
The Foundation is selling many of her original works for $100 each, with 100 percent of the proceeds helping to establish a scholarship fund for LFCC art students. For more information, please visit http://www.lfccfoundation.org/waystogive/foundationartsale.html.
6. In 2008, the Woodstock Rotary Club contributed $8,000 to LFCC through the Woodstock Rotary Club Marlin P. Krouse Scholarship Endowment.
The endowment was established by the Woodstock Rotary Club in June 2005 in memory of Marlin P. Krouse. As a result of the endowment, the Woodstock Rotary Club established the Woodstock Rotary Club Marlin P. Krouse Scholarship Fund at the College, which is awarded to Shenandoah County residents who attend LFCC.
“LFCC provided the perfect means to carry out the desires of Marlin P. Krouse by providing scholarship funding for deserving Shenandoah County students who want to continue their education beyond the secondary level,” said Larry L. Helsley, a Woodstock Rotary Club member and LFCC Board member. “Presently, approximately 50 percent of Shenandoah County students who pursue higher education do so at LFCC.”
“Mr. Krouse was aware of the fact that the Woodstock Rotary Club had been giving scholarships to deserving students for much of the club’s 80-year history,” said Maryellen Ruddy, a Rotary member. The Krouse endowment of nearly $200,000 has given the club the opportunity to offer scholarships to more deserving students.”
Krouse was a Fort Valley resident, teacher, naturalist, artist and actor. He was born in Pennsylvania and earned a bachelor’s degree from Hartford Seminary. He later graduated with master’s degrees from Susquehanna University and Penn State. In the late 1990s, Krouse demonstrated his great love and generosity for his community by leaving a portion of his estate to the Woodstock Rotary Club for annual scholarships for students.

“Because you gave to the Foundation, I will not have the financial burden of paying tuition this semester. Receiving this scholarship has been wonderful. I have two daughters in college, so not having to pay my tuition is a godsend.” —Karen Adams, LFCC student and scholarship recipient
“I gave to the Foundation, because education is the key to great success. I feel personal satisfaction and joy by helping others obtain their dreams.” —Kenneth L. Alger II, Foundation donor, Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney for Shenandoah County
