1. Unscrew the shift knob by rotating it counter-clockwise. Put it aside in a safe place for re-installation later.

2. Pull up on the e-brake cover as pictured and fold it inside out over the e-brake handle. There are two plastic tabs inside the cover that needs to be pushed toward the passenger side. The first tab is at the front of the e-brake cover and the other one at the rear (as pictured to the left). Pushing these tabs will allow the cover to be pulled up.

3. You now have access to a Philips head screw. Remove it with a Philips screwdriver and put it aside for re-install later.

4. Open the center compartment, remove the small carpet piece at the bottom and unbolt the 2 screws using a 10 mm socket with a ratchet and an extension or a Philips head screwdriver.

5. Pull the center console up and backward. You can leave it like that as it does not need to be removed from the car for the install.

6. Pull up on the shifter part of the center console about 1/2” as pictured to the left. Then pull straight toward the back of the car. You will have to pull hard as it’s strongly in place. Pull up on the console until the boot is removed from the RL part of the shifter, however be careful as there is a connection under the console.

7. Turn the console inside out and unplug the connection as pictured to the left. Place the console aside for re-install later.

8. Remove the two white plastic tabs from the sound deadening material as pictured to the left. The second tab is at the front of the shifter. Put it aside for re-install later.

9. Remove the sound deadening material from the stock shifter as pictured to the left. Put it aside for re-install later. The next steps are pictured in a 2004 STi, however the process is the same in the 2008+ STi.

10. This step requires the help of an assistant. Use the provided thin punch and a hammer to remove the spring pin from the reverse lockout mechanism. Be very careful and put a plastic bag or a rag on the side of the shifter where the spring pin comes out. Put the shifter in neutral and have an assistant with you to hold the shifter firmly in place and to avoid any stress to the transmission. Tap the pin out slowly and gently. Use caution not to lose the spring pin when it comes out. Put the spring pin aside in a safe place for re-installation later.

11. Remove the reverse lockout lever and the spring from the stock shifter and put them aside in a safe place for re-installation later. Cut the zip tie holding the reverse lock cable to the stock shifter.

12. Use a 12 mm wrench and a ratchet with a 12 mm socket to unscrew the bolt going through the shifter and shift rod. Remove the bolt and the nut from the shifter. They will not be re-used, however should be kept in case you revert back to stock in the future.

13. Read this step completely before you proceed. The snap ring at the base of the shifter must now be removed. Begin by removing the excess grease hiding the snap ring so it can be seen clearly. Use snap ring pliers to compress the snap ring. We have found that once the snap ring is compressed it is difficult to lift it out of the cylindrical base with the snap ring pliers alone.

A small screwdriver can be inserted in the gap between the snap ring and the cylinder wall to hold it in place. With the flat head screwdriver in place, you can now use needle nose pliers to hold free the end of the snap ring and rotate it as pictured while pulling up gently. This will free the snap ring from the groove it is resting in. (Pictured in a 08 WRX) Use caution not to damage the snap ring by pulling up too hard, once you rotate the clip it should come free by pulling up lightly.

14. You can now remove the stock shifter from the car. Pull on the shifter backward, it will come out with the white plastic bushing, o-rings and snap ring attached to the shifter.

Remove the metal sleeve from inside the shifter barrel as pictured to the left. It will not be re-installed however you should keep it in case you revert back to stock in the future.

15. With the stock shifter out of the car, remove the white bushing with the o-rings and the snap ring. Put them aside for re-install later.

16. Using a Phillips head screwdriver, remove the two (2) screws from the grey plastic piece on the stock shifter. Slide this piece off of the shifter and put everything aside for re-installation on the TWM short shifter. Remove the small rubber grommet from the stock shifter and put it aside for re-installation on the short shifter later.

17. Grease the bottom pivot ball of the TWM short shifter and install the bottom white bushing on to the short shifter. Also install the snap ring by twisting it slightly to increase the size of the gap so it fits over the bottom shaft of the short shifter as shown to the left.

18. Install the rubber grommet and grey plastic piece with both screws on to the TWM short shifter.

19. Insert the reverse lock cable in the short shifter as pictured to the left. The uncovered portion of the cable should go all the way in to the short shifter. Install the short shifter back in place. Make sure the bottom and top o-rings are properly in place on the white bushing while you install it. If one of the o-rings comes loose from the bushing, remove the shifter and re-install the o-ring correctly in place.

20. Insert the snap ring back in the appropriate groove using snap ring pliers and a flat head screwdriver to push it down in the groove. It’s important that the snap ring is seating properly in it’s groove to ensure the shifter is solidly in place.

21. Connect the shift rod to the short shifter with the provided bolt and nut as pictured to the left. Using a ½” socket with a ratchet and ½” wrench, tighten it down to approximately 10 ft-lbs.

22. Before proceeding to this step, you need to lift the front part of the car. Please refer to your car’s owner manual for the procedure to lift the car. Always work safely and use a proper jack and at least two jackstands to hold the car up. Place wooden blocks or bricks behind the back wheels. Also make sure the car has cooled down before this step as you will be working close to the drivetrain and exhaust. Working under the car, locate the reverse lockout cable from under the shifter and follow it to the transmission case. You will need to move the lever where the cable is connected down and toward the rear of the car.

22. Continued from last page. You can use a small screwdriver handle to jam the lever in this position as pictured (we suggest to use a soft screwdriver handle as it will stay in place better than a hard screwdriver handle). It’s better to have an assistant in the car to pull up on the RL cable because the access to the cable is restrained in the 08+ because of the heatshield.

23. Inside the car, lightly grease the black sound deadening part of the short shifter as pictured to the right. Use white lithium based grease. Install the spring and reverse lockout mechanism on the short shifter as pictured to the left.

Continued.

24. Line up the hole in the reverse lockout sleeve with the slot in the short shifter shaft and the hole in the reverse lockout cable inside the short shifter shaft. If you do not see the hole in the cable, the screwdriver holding the cable in place may have dropped from it’s position. In this case, go back under the car to place the screwdriver handle back in position. Use the provided small punch and insert it sharp side first through the reverse lockout lever, short shifter slot and reverse lockout cable as pictured to the left. Do not pull up on the reverse lockout mechanism once the punch is in place.

25. Please read steps 25 and 26 entirely before proceeding. Do not pull up on the reverse lockout mechanism before these steps are completed Insert the spring pin in the provided special tool as pictured to the left. Press the pin on to the small punch as pictured on the next page.

25. This part requires the help of an assistant. Using the special tool, press the spring pin about halfway inside the shifter, pushing the punch out of the shifter from the other end at the same time. You should be able to do it by hand but a few light taps with a hammer may be required to push the pin in as far as shown to the left. Your assistant should recover the punch from the other side of the shifter to prevent it from dropping in the shifter assembly.

26. With the spring pin halfway inserted and the shifter in neutral, use the thin punch as pictured to the left to finish inserting the spring pin in the short shifter. The pointed end of the punch should be on the spring pin side and the flat side where you tap with the hammer. While your assistant holds the shifter very firmly in place, use a hammer on the punch to push the spring pin completely in place.

Continued. The spring pin is correctly in place once it sits flush on both sides with the reverse lockout lever as pictured to the left. The spring pin is inserted all the way in place. Once it’s correctly in place, move the reverse lockout mechanism up and down a few times to make sure it’s properly working. The screwdriver holding the lever in place under the car will fall off by itself. Before lowering the car to the ground, you will need to remove the 2 front bolts of the heat shield to access the RL cable. Use a 12 mm socket with a ratchet and extension and a 12 mm wrench for the second one as it’s over the exhaust piping.

Using the provided zip tie, attach the RL cable to the shift rod as pictured. You do not need to over tighten the zip tie. Cut the excess of the zip tie and lower the car to the ground.

27. Use the provided zip tie to secure the reverse lockout cable to the short shifter as pictured to the left. Cut the excess of the zip tie, making sure not to leave sharp edges.
