Located in Carson, just 13 miles south from LAX and minutes from the South Bay beaches, California State University, Dominguez Hills sits on a 346-acre campus that shares space with the Home Depot Center, home to the L.A. Galaxy and Chivas USA soccer teams.

The University boasts an environment that provides a distinct advantage for its students by embracing the surrounding community. CSUDH’s diverse demographics are shown through every possible dimension: cultural, ethnic, age, gender, religious, economic and intellectual. Serving students locally, nationally and internationally, the Carson campus allows students to pursue a higher education while being able to develop the skills necessary for the working world after graduation. By creating a balance between the desired social atmosphere of a small campus and the cultural and academic possibilities available at a larger university, ample opportunities exist to quench the desire for intellectual development. Athletically, the Toros are a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) competing at the Division II level, bringing excitement and tradition to the campus through 11 different sports. The Toros vie for championships annually in:

Men’s & Women’s Soccer »Women’s Volleyball »Women’s Cross Country »Men’s & Women’s Basketball »Baseball »Softball »Men’s Golf »Women’s Indoor/Outdoor Track & Field »

CSUDH is one of 11 universities that competes in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), the most prominent Division II conference in the nation with 146 NCAA Championships, far more than

any other conference in the nation. Adding to these successes, the Toros have captured 24 conference championships in:

Men’s Soccer (8) »Women’s Soccer (7) »Baseball (3) »Softball (2) »Women’s Basketball (2) »Men’s Basketball (2) »

Aside from training and competing on their respective teams,

Toro student-athletes engage in community service projects throughout the year which serve the community. During the 2006-07 school year, the National Consortium for Academics and Sports (NCAS) reported that CSUDH connected with approximately 6,500 youth in its outreach efforts. That total more than doubled the next closest D-II school and gave student-athletes, coaches and staff yet another accomplishment to take pride in.

Cal State Dominguez Hills embraces the diversity of its students by sponsoring more than 70 student organizations ranging from Departmental/Professional and Recreation/Sports organizations to Cultural, Religious Service and Special Interest groups.

The University is divided into six distinct schools/colleges: College of Business Administration and Public Policy »College of Education »College of Extended and International Education »College of Health and Human Services, »College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences. »College of Arts & Humanities »

Through these programs, CSUDH offers 45 majors and 51 minors, 26 Certifi cate Programs, 22 Graduate Degree Programs and 10 Credential Programs that serve an average 12,000 students per semester

while boasting an exceptional 21:1 student-to-faculty ratio. Opportunities to study abroad are available in

vibrant institution it has become are the statewide nursing program, the master’s of humanities and an online MBA

program.

Cal State Dominguez Hills holds a unique opportunity for students by offering on-campus housing. It’s a convenient, safe and cost-effective resource to enhance the time spent at school. In contrast to the traditional residence halls or dormitories, University Housing is an apartment complex composed of 22 separate two-story buildings and two common buildings. All apartments are fully furnished and facilities include recreation and meeting rooms, laundry facilities and a computer lab. On the complex grounds are basketball and volleyball courts, a weight room and a picnic area, with grassy knolls and an exquisite landscape surrounding the buildings that create a perfect background for either studying or relaxing, or both.

LAsT seAsOn

Last season began with high expectations as head coach Scott Davenport took the reins, but in arguably the toughest volleyball conference in the nation and coupled with injuries whittling the Toro roster down to just nine healthy players at one point, wins were few and far between.

With a schedule that saw the Toros play 13 contests against teams with a national ranking attached to their name, CSUDH struggled through a 2-27 season. Despite the low win total the Toros were by no means a doormat to opposing teams, as they took games off nationally-ranked Cal State San Bernardino (#2), Seattle Pacifi c (#20), Chico State (#23), and Cal Poly Pomona (#24), winning at least one game in 12 of the 27 losses.

unmArKeD TALenT

With a quartet of seniors departing from last year’s team that included Sophia Lopes who had the most kills for the ‘08 season, Jenise Espindola who notched the most digs in a match in the past 10 years with 31 and picked up the 10th most digs in a season in Toro history, and the setting du of Kayleigh Spratt and Tiffany Bull, who both placed their respective names in the CSUDH career top 10 list for assists, the Toros will have to replace key components of the starting rotation this season.

With only one returning senior and no returning juniors on the 2008 squad, the Toros will look to a talented trio of players to lead the way and be the building blocks of a program that will help erase the memory of the disappointing seasons gone by.

Returning sophomores Ashley Clark, Marissa Anderson, and Melissa Velasco all played signifi cant minutes in their inaugural season as freshmen last year, showing growth over the course of the season. Mix in eight freshmen recruits with that solid sophomore trio, water over the next few seasons, and the Toro volleyball future looks brighter than it ever has as the young talent continues to grow and mature together.

LOOKing TO AssisT

With the Spratt-Bull combination gone, the pressure of dishing the ball and running the offense this season will come in the form of two freshmen, Rebekah Wolfgramm and Cassidy Mangum. Although both may stand a little shorter than previous setters in recent Toro history, the duo will bring a new level of athleticism and quickness to the position. “They’re really smart and hard workers,” coach Davenport says. “And they have a really good mind for the game, too.”

cLOsing The BLOcK

With no middles returning from last season, coach Davenport will look to JuCo transfers Ashley Davison and Kayla Huckabee, along with the new talent of freshman Heather Rushton, to close the block this season. “I think we’ll be better than we were last year,” coach Davenport explains. “With [assistant coach] Stewart breaking it down for the middles, they will be fi guring out the game a lot faster.”

The Defensive Line

Anchoring the defense in the different color jersey will be Velasco, who split time as the main defensive specialist and libero last season. Velasco recorded 10 double-digit dig matches and had 30 more matches with six or more digs for the Toros last season. “Melissa will pretty much be our quarterback this season,” states Davenport. “She’s got the mentality and experience to anchor the team on serve receive as well as on defense.” In addition to captaining the defense, Velasco brings scoring ability with a tough line drive jump fl oat that should lead to multiple aces and over passes.

Along with Velasco on the back line will be freshmen Jasmine Mertens, Hilary Hougardy, and Angelo Ho. Add in a fi rst time Toro defensive specialist in senior Stacy Wilder, and expect to see some of the best defense the Toros have produced in a long time.

Pounding balls behind the setter this season will be the lone lefty on the front court Anderson, after spending the entire 2007 season as the key right side hitter for the team. She used her pin-point accuracy to put points on the scoreboard and, with a season of growth, should become an even bigger factor this season. “Anderson showed her coachability last year,” begins Davenport. “Her receptiveness to the tactical things was huge and her ability to impress upon the new kids what we expect this season will be very important. There’s a better chance we can get to where we need to go a whole lot faster by building trust this way.”

The mAin WeApOns

The focus of the offense will again rest on the arms of the Toro outside hitters, which should hold the fi ercest battle for playing time. Last season Clark showed fl ashes of future All-CCAA accolades with her all-around play, and will have to fend off a crop of young players in freshmen Jessica Harrison and Madison Horsley. “Ashley is part of the core for the foundation of this team,” Davenport states. “She’s going to have to show the rest of the team what it takes to compete in this conference.”

Senior TaMesha Jefferson, who was missed last season do to injury, will return to the line up and provide an instant upgrade to the Toro squad this season. In addition to her immense athletic ability which will give a boost to the Toro offense and defense, her leadership skills as the only senior with collegiate experience should prove invaluable with the young roster. “Meesh brings the ability to explain the speed of the game to the younger players,” Davenport begins. “Her example on and off the court will be very imperative.”

The 2008 scheDuLe

Like every year, the Toros will face some of the best teams in the country, in not only CCAA members UC San Diego, Chico State, Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State L.A., and Cal State San Bernardino, who qualifi ed for the NCAA Division II Pacifi c Regional Tournament, but also against Lynn University, who made it to the second round of the South Regional, two-time NCAA Champions BYU-Hawai’i (1999 & 2002), 2005 and 2006 regional participant Seattle Pacifi c, and 2004, 2005, 2006 regional participant Central Washington.

On the fl ip side, the Toros will welcome the Academy of Art University at San Francisco, who in 2008 will be fi elding athletic teams for the fi rst time in the school’s history, and San Francisco State, who returns to the world of CCAA volleyball after a three-year hiatus.

eXpecTATiOns fOr 2008

With so many new faces and young unproven talent on the roster this season, and just 10 of the 27 All-CCAA recipients lost to graduation, coach Davenport isn’t expecting an instant turn around for a program that has been at the bottom of the league nearly every season.

“I expect to continue where we left off last year when it comes to the intangible things,” Davenport says. “It seems like we have a complete group of kids willing to put in the time and energy it takes to be successful. My expectation is that we continue to go that direction and not fall backwards at all.”

The team’s focus for the 2008 season will be to make it a fundamental growing year, to build upon the foundation laid out from previous years and head towards the ultimate goal of breaking through the top of the pack in a few seasons.

“We’re going to keep stepping up and going toe to toe with whoever we play,” Davenport concludes. “I’m really excited about this season and can’t wait to get started.”

“We’re going to keep stepping up and going toe to toe with whoever we play.”

Mildred García, Ed.D., is the seventh president of California State University, Dominguez Hills and the eleventh female president—the fi rst Latina president—in the California State University system. With a strong commitment to equitable access in higher education for all and with more than three decades of teaching and administrative experience,

Dr. García took the helm as President on August 1, 2007 and is poised to lead the highly diverse faculty, staff and student body at CSU Dominguez Hills. An urban university located in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County, CSU Dominguez Hills offers 45 baccalaureate degrees and 21 master’s degrees. Enrollment exceeds 12,000 students, of which about 2,000 enroll via distance education opportunities. The student population is among the most ethnically and culturally rich in the nation. President García brings with her a commitment to multicultural alliances and believes that these coalitions strengthen not only an individual’s self-development and opportunities, but also strengthen institutions and communities. President García came to Dominguez Hills after serving from 2001 to 2007 as president of Berkeley College in New York and New Jersey, where she championed the cause of access with success—the obligation to make the attainment of a college degree a realistic goal for all who strive to succeed. Under her leadership, the college began offering full academic programs in an online format. Over 14 bachelor’s and 14 associate’s degrees were approved, including Criminal Justice, International Business, Fashion Marketing and Management, Health Information Management and Human Resources. The college also made a number of capital improvements during her tenure, including the construction of new facilities as well as the modernization and renovation of existing facilities. Prior to Berkeley, she was at Arizona State University (1997-2001), holding a variety of positions there, including Vice Provost for Academic Personnel, Associate Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, Associate Director of the Hispanic Research Center at Arizona State University, and Tenured Professor in the Social and Behavioral Sciences Department. From 1986 to 1996 she was at Montclair State University, starting out as Executive Assistant to the Vice President of Academic Affairs before joining the faculty in the School of Professional Studies and serving as Assistant

Vice President of Academic Affairs (1988-1996). She has also held the post of Dean of Students at Hostos Community College of City University of New York (1979-1986). An educator foremost, President García’s research has concentrated on equity in higher education and its impact on policy and practice. She has written extensively and is a much sought-after speaker at national and international conferences. Among the books she has authored are Succeeding in an Academic Career, which focuses on how faculty of color can succeed in higher education; Assessing Campus Diversity Initiatives (co-published); and Transforming the First Year of College for Students of Color (with Laura I. Redón and Dawn Person). Most recently, she was a keynote speaker at the Association of American Colleges and Universities’ Annual Conference, and presented at the American Council on Education’s Third Summit for Women of Color Administrators in Higher Education. She was panel moderator for “Connecting Higher Education to Industry and Marketplace Needs” at the International Economic Development Council (IEDC) Annual Conference and delivered the keynote address at the University of San Diego, Community College Leadership Development Initiatives Summer Academy. President García is an active member of the American Council of Education where she serves on its Board of Directors. She also serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of Peer Review, Association of American Colleges and Universities; on the Advisory Board for Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education, on the Board of Trustees of the Caucus Educational Corporation; on the Board of Trustees of Caribbean University, Puerto Rico; and as founding board member of the National Council for Educational Partnerships. President García received a Doctor of Education as well as a Master of Arts in higher education administration from Teachers College, Columbia University; an M.A. in business education/higher education from New York University; a B.S. in business education from Bernard Baruch College of City University of New York (CUNY); and an A.A.S. in legal secretarial sciences in business from New York City Community College of CUNY.

He acquired strong skills in the design and implementation of automated systems as both a project and regional manager for Systems and Computer Technology (SCT) Corporation, which is a leading supplier of computing services, applications software, systems integration and telecommunications services to higher education. Bowman also served as the University Registrar at Pepperdine University and he was a tenured faculty member and assistant director of academic records at Western Michigan University. Dr. Bowman received his doctoral degree in higher education administration from Pepperdine University. He also has a bachelor’s degree in education and a master’s degree in counseling, both from Western Michigan University.

patrick guillenDirector of Athletics

Dr. Boice Bowmanvice-president for

student Affairs Patrick Guillen assumed his position as the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics on November 1, 2005 after serving as the Assistant Athletics Director since 2002, and has led the department to its most successful overall seasons since its inception in 1968. Guillen’s tenure at Cal State Dominguez Hills began in August of 1995 as the Director of Athletic Media Relations after coming to the Toros program from Vanguard University (formerly Southern California College) in Costa Mesa, CA. As the Director of Athletics, Guillen secured several

new corporate partners, updated CSUDH’s corporate sponsorship with Enterprise Rent-A-Car, hired CSUDH’s new volleyball and baseball coaches, oversaw the appointment of a new Faculty Athletics Representative, raised necessary funds for new baseball and softball bleachers, sold venue advertising, centralized and updated concessions, and formulated future fundraising ideas all in a period of less than a year, efforts which have substantially increased CSUDH Athletics funding beginning in the 2006 season. Additionally, his efforts were instrumental in the 2006 & 2007 Toros Scholarship Golf Classics, which brought in the most scholarship dollars in its 17-year history. Guillen serves on the Board of Directors for the Boys & Girls Club of Carson, as well as on both the CCAA Administrative and CCAA Championship Committees. He is also an active member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the NCAA Division II Athletic Directors Association, was named an NCAA Regional Advisory Committee member for women’s soccer and, most recently, was appointed the CCAA Sports Information liaison. In 2005-06 Guillen negotiated the hiring of a Marketing and Promotions Coordinator as well as a Special Projects Coordinator, positions vital to the success of the department. The additions were immediately successful with the successful implementation of the Inaugural CSUDH Athletics Business Luncheon, the Inaugural Monte Carlo Night, and the redesigned Fitness Center, which opened in January of 2007. Last year, Guillen began his appointments on the CSUDH WASC Sub-Committee for Civic Engagement, as well as on the University Budget Committee (UBC), which recommends budget requests and allocations to the President of the University, two committees he continues to serve on. Guillen has been an integral part of an Athletics Department that has captured an NCAA Division II men’s soccer national championship, hosted the NCAA Division II Final Four women’s soccer championship, and fi rst- and second-round NCAA Division II men’s soccer championships. In addition, Guillen initiated the negotiation process that brought the Home Depot Center to the Carson campus four years ago. On the academic front, the overall student-athlete GPA has increased from 2.63 (04-05) to 2.67 (05-06) to 2.73 this past year under Guillen’s leadership, while 68 student-athletes made the CSUDH Athletics spring honor roll, 54 were recognized by the NCAA as part of the 20th Annual National STUDENT-Athlete Day, and 23 Toros were named to the 206-07 CCAA’s All-Academic list (an increase of six from 05-06). Additionally, two Toros earned ESPN The Magazine’s Academic All-District honors, while one claimed a prestigious Arthur Ashe, Jr. Award for overall excellence, and is a fi nalist for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award to be announced in October 2007. Beginning with his Assistant Athletics Director/Media Relations responsibilities in 2002, Guillen had been responsible for fundraising, media, community and public relations, as well as the oversight of all home event management operations. Prior to working in intercollegiate athletics, Guillen enjoyed a successful sales and marketing career in the healthcare industry, working as the Area Marketing Manager for what was then the largest privately-owned healthcare organization in the country, Comprehensive Rehabilitation Associates, Inc. Born in nearby Torrance, Guillen’s roots are fi xed in Carson, having graduated from Carson High School. He earned his undergraduate degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Management and Marketing from Vanguard University in 1987. Guillen is single and resides in Irvine.

The California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) has been one of the nation’s most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences since its establishment in December 1938. The 11-member league is home to some of the nation’s fi nest NCAA Division II athletic programs in Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State L.A., Cal State Monterey Bay, Cal State San Bernardino, Cal State Stanislaus, Chico State, Humboldt State, San Francisco State, Sonoma State and UC San Diego. These institutions compete in seven women’s and six men’s CCAA-sponsored sports. Fall sports include men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. Men’s and women’s basketball are contested in the winter, and women’s tennis, men’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track & fi eld, softball and baseball comprise spring competition. CCAA members has won 146 NCAA Championships (98 men, 48 women) which is far and away the most of any Division II conference. On the men’s side, CCAA members have brought home at least 10 titles in swimming & diving (25), wrestling (16), track & fi eld (13), tennis (11) and baseball (10). CCAA institutions have been very successful in the 25-year history of NCAA women’s athletics, having won 10 cross country, eight softball, six track & fi eld, fi ve volleyball and fi ve basketball national championships as well as 19 more in four other sports. The CCAA has undergone several changes in conference membership since charter members UC Santa Barbara, Fresno State, San Diego State and San Jose State came together to form the league in 1938. Over the past 68 years, a number of institutions have been members of the CCAA, including Cal State Northridge, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Chapman, Cal State Fullerton, Long Beach State, Pacifi c, Pepperdine, UC Riverside, UC Davis, Grand Canyon University, and Cal State Bakersfi eld. The CCAA Commissioner’s Offi ce relocated from southern California to the San Francisco Bay Area-suburb of Walnut Creek in July 1998. Robert J. Hiegert is in his 11th year as Commissioner.
