* – size of track

In a change from previous years, there are no qualifying standards for the 2010 NCAA outdoor championships. Instead, the top 48 entries in individual events and the top 24 relay teams will be invited to one of

two preliminary round sites – Austin, Texas (West) or Greensboro, N.C. (East) – to determine the field for the national meet held at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field June 9-12.

At the preliminary round sites, first-round and quarterfinal heats will narrow the list of competitors, with the semifinals and championship events contested in Eugene, Ore. For the heptathlon and decathlon,

the top 24 entries will not compete in the preliminary rounds and will advance directly to nationals.

Cal will participate in the West site on the University of Texas campus in Austin May 27-29 against schools from the following states: Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Wash-ington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

C alifornia track and field hall of fame member Don Bowden was named to the USA Track & Field Hall of Fame as announced by the organization on Nov. 4, 2008. A 1956 Olympic Team member, Bowden was the first American to break the four-

minute barrier in the mile, running 3:58.7 on June 1, 1957, in Stockton, Calif. His school-record time stood for almost 50 years before David Torrence completed the distance in 3:58.62 at the California Collegiate Challenge on April 28, 2007, at Edwards Stadium.

A 1956 Olympian in the 1500 and the 1957 NCAA outdoor 880-yard champion, Bowden was ranked third in the world in the 800 meters by Track & Field News in 1957. He also ran the third leg (1:49.5) for Cal’s quartet that set the 4x880-yard relay world record time of 7:21.0 in Los Angeles on May 24, 1957.

Bowden competed for the Golden Bears from 1956-58 and was inducted into the Cal Hall of Fame in 1987.

Long considered one of the finest track & field facilities in the world, the University of California’s Edwards Stadium has a legacy unmatched in collegiate track and field. Not

only has the facility been host to some of the best individual performances in the sport’s history, but Edwards Stadium also stands in one of the most beautiful settings in the nation, with panoramic views of the Berkeley Hills and Strawberry Canyon to the east, and the San Francisco Bay, Golden Gate Bridge and the city skyline to the west.

Jesse Owens competes at Edwards Stadium

Cal’s track teams returned home to Ed-wards Stadium/Goldman Field for the 2000 season after a year hosting meets away from Berkeley while the stadium reconstruction project was completed. Edwards Stadium was the site for the 2001 Pac-10 Champion-ships and also hosted the 1993 Pac-10 meet. The conference meet will return to Berkeley in May 2010.

With a seating capacity of 22,000, Edwards Stadium for years had the distinction of being the largest exclusive track & field facility in the United States. Beginning with the 1999-00 school year, the Cal men and women’s soccer teams adopted Edwards Stadium’s infield – Goldman Field – as their home venue.

Over the years, Edwards Stadium has witnessed 12 world records, 26 American records and 24 collegiate records. The first world record set in the stadium was also history’s first 15-foot pole vault, by Corne-lius “Dutch” Warmerdam in 1940. The last world mark to fall in Berkeley was in 1978, as Washington State’s Henry Rono clocked 13:06.4 in the 5,000-meter run. On a cinder surface in 1966 – before a Tartan all-weather

surface was added in 1977 – a University of Kansas freshman by the name of Jim Ryun clocked a remarkable 3:51.3 miles.

Named after Col. George C. Edwards, the facility opened in 1932 as the only stadium in the world built for track & field use only. Since that time, Edwards Stadium has hosted eight NCAA Championships meets (more than any other site), a National AAU Championship, the All-American Invitational in 1966, the 1971 and ’78 USA vs. USSR dual meets, six Kennedy Games, the Brooks Meet of Champions and the Kinney Invitational.

In 1967, the oval itself was dedicated in the name of Walter Christie, California first track and field coach (1900-32), and in the early 1960s, the “Friends of California Track” raised funds to build the Walter Christie Bench, which stands just outside the running track on the west side of the field. With funds that remained after the bench was built, the electric clock that sits atop the scoreboard to the north was pur-chased. A 173-seat press box sits atop the west grandstands.

O ne of the real success stories for the Uni-versity of California is the development and growth of a comprehensive academic

support program for its student-athletes: the Athletic Study Center.

In 1984, campus officials and athletic department administrators decided that a greater emphasis needed to be placed on helping Cal student-athletes with their academic pursuits. The Athletic Study Center was thus born and charged with developing an academic support program tailored to the needs of NCAA Division I student-athletes. It was a significant development for an academi-cally oriented institution such as Cal to recognize the special needs required for a modern student-athlete’s success both as an athletic competitor on the field of play and as a student in the classroom.

The tutorial program promotes and en-hances student academic skills and prog-ress by providing individual tutoring, group workshops, study groups, credit courses and intensive special programs. The Athletic Study Center has between 50-60 tutors on staff per semester to guarantee that students receive the best possible support. Tutorial sessions are also offered at night, enabling student-athletes to receive help after practices when are able to devote more time to studying.

aDvIsIng proGraM

The advising program offers a broad range of services to meet the unique needs of student-athletes, including assistance in understanding and complying with uni-versity, college and NCAA requirements, developing time management skills and resolving personal academic issues unique to student-athletes.

During a student-athlete’s freshman year, advisors provide assistance to ensure a successful academic transition from high school. In the sophomore year, they assist student-athletes in making decisions on appropriate majors and fields of study. Over the course of the final two years, advisors take more of an exiting approach, ensur-ing that proper academic progress is being made towards graduation while referring juniors and seniors to areas on or near campus that can help with career planning and development.

speCial proGraMs

The Athletic Study Center offers a special service called Summer Bridge; an adjunct program designed to help ease the transi-tion from high school to college. The primary components of the program include writing and math workshops, an advising work-shop, study skills seminars and an evening tutorial program.

Another special program offered is peer advising. Peer advisors provide academic and campus guidance for new intercolle-giate student-athletes. They are selected from junior and senior student-athletes who assist in the development of programs to further address the needs of student-athletes.

Geared around the understanding of the amount of time student-athletes must devote to practice, training, physical therapy and team travel, the program creates an environment where students can cultivate strong study habits, receive individual or group tutoring and obtain counseling from academic advisors.

An integral part of the California Track & Field program and its success is the strength and conditioning program, led by Lindsay Bufkin and assistants, who supervise the com-

prehensive operation for the Golden Bear team. The program’s philosophy is geared towards helping each student-athlete achieve the highest level of athletic development.

By teaching how all the components of strength and conditioning fit together, student-athletes understand how to maximize force production. This includes enhancement of speed, strength and flexibility, which results in improved power. Motivating, educating and helping to reach maximum athletic development is the primary focus of the Cal program.

The Cal weight room includes eight Olympic platforms and an array of aerobic and anaerobic equipment. The picturesque facility offers panoramic views of the entire region, including San Francisco and the Bay. The training regimen at Cal is a year-round process that emphasizes the speed, strength and flexibility. With closely monitored workouts that involve a great deal of individual instruction and attention, student-athletes are taught the correct techniques to increase their ability to perform at their peak during competition.

LiNDSAY BUFKiNStrength &

Conditioning

Cal’s program stresses comprehensive training in order to improve both strength and speed. Flexibility is a key component because it is essential for proper lifting.

Athlete workouts are closely monitored by the conditioning staff who work in col-laboration with the entire sports medicine team (doctors, athletic trainers, physical therapists, nutritionists, etc.) to ensure the health and safety of all of student-athletes.

In this way, Cal’s strength and condition-ing program is a vital component linking the “full circle” of a student-athlete’s physical development from conditioning through rehabilitation and reconditioning.

Located across the Bay Bridge from San Francisco, Oakland is a city of over 400,000, jam-packed with exciting attractions, stimulating arts and an ideal climate. Oakland’s charm exceeds its man-made wonders, as its tumbling hills, vast forests, hiking and riding trails, beautiful lakes and numerous parks provide a natural escape for those who prefer nature over an urban environment.

Berkeley, just a 12-mile drive from San Francisco, is situated on 17.7 square miles with a population of just under 103,000 people. A study in contrasts, Berkeley is a small town with a big city character. With its world-renowned university, global population and rich diversity of cultural arts, Berkeley reflects and affects the rest of the country.

Sports fans can see it all in the Bay Area - professional football (San Francisco 49ers, Oakland Raiders), professional basketball (Golden State Warriors), professional baseball (San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics), professional hockey (San Jose Sharks) and outstanding collegiate com-petition (six Division I schools).

T here is no other way to aptly describeAmerica’s top public university. There is no other way to describe one of the elite academic settings

in the world – especially one that also includes one of America’s most successful athletic departments.

The University of California blends the best of all worlds. Overlooking the scenic San Francisco Bay and ranked as the nation’s top public university by the U.S. News and World Report, the flagship campus of the state of California also features an athletic program that an-nually finishes among the leaders in the Directors’ Cup standings, which rates the overall success of America’s collegiate athletic departments.

Cal attracts what many believe to be the finest appli-cant pool in the United States. The university features a diverse student body population. The University of Cali-fornia offers 351 degree programs, and 35 of the school’s 36 graduate programs are ranked among America’s Top 10. Cal’s 35 programs among the Top 10 is No. 1 among all universities in the country, as is its 32 “distinguished” programs, as rated by the National Research Council.

The library is ranked third in the country, as judged by the Association of Research Libraries with 10 million volumes in 32 campus libraries.

The faculty features seven Nobel Laureates, 135 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 28 MacArthur Fellows, 74 Fulbright Scholars, four Pulitzer Prize winners and more Guggenheim Fellows (359) than any other university in America.

At the time, Robert Gordon Sproul, who became UC president in 1930, said that the stadium “stands in sim-ple dignity, beauty and strength.”

Now, plans are being finalized to renovate the 86-year-old structure, starting with the west side, to create programmat-ic, game day and fan amenity improvements while respect-ing the architecture and character of the historic structure.

Donors have demonstrated their backing of the privately-funded project through their commitment to the Endowment Seat Program (ESP), a first-of-its-kind effort in major college athletics to secure the financial future for the Athletic Depart-ment. ESP will provide a long-term, sustaining endowment that could grow to $1 billion over the next 30 years and will be used to fund annual operating needs for Cal’s student-athletes.
