2009-10 Season Preview In his 13th season at the helm of the Park University women’s basketball program, head coach Joe C. Meriweather will look for a mixture of returners and a crop of new talent to help lead his 2009-10 basketball team to success. Coach Meriweather has eight returning players on his squad, and brings in eight newcomers. Park returns three seniors, one junior, three sophomores and a redshirt freshman, while the team welcomes in five freshmen, a sophomore and two juniors. Park went 5-22 last season and had a streak of twelve straight losses at one point, but Coach Meriweather believes this year’s team has a whole new attitude about them. “From what I’ve seen so far this offseason all of our players have come out with a good attitude and are working very hard,” Meriweather said. “They are working together as a team, which is a good sign and they know that they will not be successful without a lot of hard work.” Leading the way for the returners is three-year starter Traci Oden. The Richmond, Mo., native appeared in 26 games last season for Park and started in 18, only missing one game all year. Point guard Stefany Jones also returns for the Pirates, after starting 15 games for Park last season. Jones has played in 31 games for coach Meriweather in her two years at Park. Park will also return some size to the lineup, as 6-1 sophomore forward Dominique Hayes will look to continue her success from last year. Hayes was one of Park’s leading rebounders a year ago grabbing 6.4 boards a game. She was also named the Association of Independent Institutions Player of the Week for the week ending Nov. 3, 2008. Hayes grabbed 23 rebounds and scored 11 points against McKendree that week to earn the award. “It’s great to have so many returners coming back because they are used to our style of play here and should be used to the college game by now,” Meriweather said. “It is difficult that first year playing college ball because the game is very different and the pace is so much quicker than in high school, but our sophomores are very mature and I’m anxious to see it all come together.” The Pirates will feature a diverse group of newcomers including five guards and three forwards. One of the guards is 6-0 red shirt freshman Emma Hart. A native of Essex, England, Hart sat out the 2008-09 season and prepared all summer long for her first year of competition for the Pirates. Hart is mainly a perimeter threat and will look to see some playing time at the small forward and shooting guard position. Park will also have a two-sport athlete in their front court as freshman Jasmine Kassanavoid will retire her knee pads for the winter and join the women’s basketball team once the Park women’s volleyball season is over. Kassanavoid is a 5-9 forward out of Lawson, Mo., and saw action for the women’s volleyball squad all season long as an outside hitter. She led the Pirates in kills and kills per game and was the only Pirate to collect more than 250 points. The Pirates will also usher in four new freshmen who all hail from the state of Missouri, as Sarah Hall joins the team as a 5-10 freshman from Cam-eron, Mo., Lauren Hatten also joins the Pirates this season from Alton, Mo. Rounding out the final two freshman is 6-0 freshman Vanessa Van Bleisem from Smithville, Mo., and 6-0 freshman Kaitlin Lewis out of Kansas City, Mo. Park will kickoff the 2009-10 regular season on the road Nov. 6 against Avila University at 1:00 p.m. at the MidAmerica Nazarene Classic in Olathe, Kan. Park’s first home game will matchup the Pirates against Missouri Valley College, on Nov. 10 at 5:30 p.m. inside the Breckon Sports Center. The Pirates defeated Missouri Valley both on the road and at home last season.

Oasha White was one of only two players to play in all 27 games for Park last season.

Shareikka Theus-Downey played in 18 games for Park in 08-09 with one start.

Traci Oden has played in 67 games over the past three years for the Pirates.

2009-10 ScheduleEntering his 13th year at Park University, women’s basketball head coach Joe C. Meriweather announced his 2009-10 schedule which includes 14 home games and numerous contests with Kansas City metro area schools. Park has a solid core of returners coming back in 2009-10 but this year’s squad will also feature many new players and Meriweather is looking forward to seeing the veterans and youngsters come together. “I am really looking forward to this year especially with a few new faces being added to the mix,” Meriweather said. “We have some solid leadership returning as well, so it will be a nice blend of fresh new talent and returners and with the schedule we have it should be a very exciting year.” The Pirates will face three teams that qualified for the 2009 NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Tournament in Jackson, Tenn., along with two squads that competed in the 2009 NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa. For the second straight year, Park will begin the 2009-10 season in an exhibition game against Livin’ The Dream on Oct. 17 at 1:00 p.m. inside the Breckon Sports Center. Livin’ The Dream consists of one men’s and one women’s traveling exhibition team comprised of former college and professional athletes that compete against top NCAA, NAIA, Junior College and International competition. Park will compete in the MNU Classic to open up the regular season as they take on Avila University on Friday, Nov. 6 at 1:00 p.m. in Olathe, Kan. on the campus of MidAmerica Nazarene University. One day later on Saturday, Nov. 7, the Pirates will take on host school MidAmerica at 6:00 p.m. inside MNU’s Cook Center. The Pirates will open up their home slate on Tuesday, Nov. 10 against Missouri Valley at 5:30 p.m. inside the Breckon Sports Center. Park swept the Vikings last season, winning on the road, 64-56, back on Dec. 13, 2008 and winning at home in overtime, 64-59, on Jan. 19, 2009. Park will take part in another early season tournament on Friday, Nov. 13 and Saturday, Nov. 14, as they travel to Baldwin City, Kan., for the Baker Classic. The Pirates will clash with Baker University on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Benedictine College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Kansas Wesleyan University comes to Parkville on Saturday, Nov. 21 for a matinee affair beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the Breckon Sports Center. The Coyotes are the defending Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament champions and qualified for the NAIA Division II National Tournament last season. Park will start a five-game home stand on Nov. 28 at 1:00 p.m. with a contest against Friends University, then three days later will take on MidAmer-ica Nazarene on Dec. 1 at the Breckon Sports Center. Defending Red River Athletic Conference Champion Langston University will come to town on Dec. 5 to take on the Pirates at 2:00 p.m. Langston qualified for the NAIA National Tournament last season and took down the Pirates, 83-58, last Nov. 6. The Ravens of Benedictine will take on the Pirates on Jan. 2 at the Breckon Sports Center and American Midwest Conference play will begin on Jan. 7, as Park faces Missouri Baptist in its first AMC game since 2000. Park will begin its first season back in the American Midwest Conference in 2009 after previously holding membership in the AMC from 1993 to 2000, exiting the league following the spring semester in 2000. “Returning to the AMC is going to be a great opportunity for Park University,” Meriweather said. “It is going to be a very tough conference, because every team will be very competitive. Another positive in joining the AMC is the chance to start new rivalries, which will be good for all of our teams.” Starting Jan. 9 against Columbia College, Park will hit the road for four straight AMC games and will return home on Jan. 21 to face William Woods. After two more AMC road games against Hannibal-LaGrange on Jan. 23 and Stephens College on Jan. 28, Park will face McKendree University for the first time in ’09 on Jan. 30 at 2:00 p.m. at the Breckon Sports Center. Park and Mckendree split the two game series last season, with Park winning, 67-53, on Nov. 1 and McKendree coming out victorious on Dec. 5, 62-45. The Pirates have a three-game home stand beginning with Columbia on Feb. 6 and hit the road again with a contest against William Woods on February 18. The Owls are the defending AMC Tournament Champions and qualified for last year’s NAIA Division I National Tournament. Park’s senior day celebration will take place before the tip of the Stephens College game on Feb. 25, which will also mark the final regular season game played inside the Breckon Sports Center. The AMC Tournament will get started on Mar. 3 with the Quarterfinal round and will take place at Campus Sites throughout the AMC. The AMC Semifinals will be played on Friday, Mar. 5, while the AMC Championship game is set for Monday, Mar. 8 and will also take place at a Campus Site. The winner of the AMC Tournament Championship will go on to play in the NAIA National Tournament in Jackson, Tenn., at the Oman Arena from Mar. 17-23.

The American Midwest Conference (formerly known as the Show-Me Collegiate Conference sponsors championships in 13 different sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s track and field, and volleyball. The purpose of the American Midwest Conference is to promote the positive ideals and objectives of athletics, to provide an organization of colleges and universities with similar founda-tions to engage in athletic contests on an equal basis, to serve as a forum to formulate and solve common problems, to enhance and preserve athletics in their true perspective and to promote athletics in an academic environment.

The purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member insti-tutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participation in athletics serves as an integral part of the total educational process. The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recog-nizes the importance of the individuality of each member institution, the value of the conferences and Association of Independent Institu-tions (A.I.I.) structure, and the benefits of membership in a national association. The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmo-sphere and reality where fair distribution of overall athletic opportuni-ty and resources, proportionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student-athlete, coach or athletics administra-tor is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men’s sports program would be pleased to accept as its own the overall participation opportunities and resources currently allocated to the women’s sports program and vice versa. The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at near-ly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 25 conferences and the Association of Inde-pendent Institutions (A.I.I.), the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports. Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive difference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the latest cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of innovation. Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator are commit-ted to the true spirit of competition through the five core values: re-spect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.

aMC Presason Coaches Poll The Park University women’s basketball team has been picked to finish seventh in the American Midwest Conference, according to the nine conference coaches announced by the AMC in late October. Park will rejoin the AMC for the first time since 2000 after spending the last nine seasons as an Independent Institution. Park received 23 points in the poll and is predicted to finish behind six other schools including Columbia College, William Woods, McKendree Univer-sity, Missouri Baptist, Williams Baptist and Hannibal-LaGrange College. Columbia received five first-place votes and a total of 61 points in the coaches poll. The Cougars shared the AMC regular-season championship with William Woods University, which was installed as the No. 2 team in this year’s pre-season rating. The Owls claimed the remaining four first-place votes and earned 58 points from the AMC coaches. There is a lot of firepower returning for a Columbia squad that posted a 29-5 overall record and 14-2 league mark in 2008-09. The Cougars earned an at-large bid to the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship and reached the second round. After sharing the AMC regular-season title with Columbia, William Woods went on to win the conference tournament championship and earn its spot in the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship. The Owls were 21-11 overall and 14-2 in the AMC a year ago, and head coach Dan Chapla has the nucleus of last year’s team returning in 2009-10. McKendree University grabbed 51 points to finish third in the AMC pre-season poll. Head coach Melissa Ringhausen led the Bearcats to a 20-12 record and a berth in the AMC Tournament championship contest, and has a young squad set to take the floor in 2009-10. Senior guard Haley Klingelhoefer (9.3 PPG) will provide veteran leadership, and will be joined by junior guards Katie Fullerton (8.8 PPG, 114 assists) and Ashley Agee (13 PPG). Missouri Baptist University was picked to take fourth place in the AMC with 43 points, followed by Williams Baptist College with 33 points. Hannibal-LaGrange College grabbed the No. 6 slot in the AMC pre-season poll with 30 points, and were followed by the league’s newest member, Park University. Rounding out the AMC pre-season poll are Stephens College (13 points) and Harris-Stowe State University (12 points). The 2009-10 AMC schedule begins on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, and runs through Saturday, Feb. 27. The AMC Tournament will be held March 1, 3, 5 and 8. The post-season champion will earn the conference’s automatic bid to the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship, which runs March 17-23 at Oman Arena in Jackson, Tenn. The Pirates return eight players to this year’s squad and bring in eight newcomers. The Pirates lost its first competition of the season on Oct.17 as exhibi-tion traveling squad, Livin the Dream, defeated Park, 69-63. Park will open up the 2009-10 regular season on Friday, Nov. 6 against Avila University at 1:00 p.m. in Olathe, Kan., as part on MidAmerica Nazarene’s Classic. 2009-10 AMC WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PRE-SEASON POLL (FIRST-PLACE VOTES IN PARENTHESES) Place Team Points 1 Columbia College (5) 61 2 William Woods University (4) 58 3 McKendree University 51 4 Missouri Baptist University 43 5 Williams Baptist College 33 6 Hannibal-LaGrange College 30 7 Park University 23 8 Stephens College 13 9 Harris-Stowe State University 12

2008-09 recap The 2008-09 season had its ups and downs for Park, but one thing was a constant for the Pirates, they never gave up and always worked hard. Park had an incoming freshman class of 10 players and only five returners. Park finished the year, 5-22, and lost in the first round of the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Tournament, to Morris College, 76-67. The Pirates began the year with a solid win over McKendree University, 67-53, inside the Breckon Sports Center. In the first game of her career, Dominique Hayes, scored 11 points and grabbed 23 rebounds against the Bearcats. For her efforts she was named the A.I.I. Female Athlete of the week. With things looking up after the big win over McKendree, Park lost its next 12 games and didn’t pick up a win until Dec. 13 on the road against Missouri Valley College. Park then picked up another road win on Jan. 5 against Ottawa in a 68-65 victory. Park then returned home after an eight game road trip to face Missouri Valley at the Breckon Sports Center. Park again defeated the Vikings, 64-59, in overtime for their fourth win of the year. Park’s final win of the year came against Brescia University on Feb. 7 at home in a 69-59 win. One of Park’s leading rebounders and scorers reached two milestones in 2008-09, as senior Meghan Cummings scored her 1,000th point against Avila University and collected her 700th career rebound against Brescia. “Meghan went out there and played hard everyday in practice and in games,” head coach Joe C. Meriweather said. “I was very proud of her, not only for what she did on the court but off the court as well. She graduated on time last May and was always a hard worker, so I am definitely proud of everything she did at Park and she will be greatly missed.” Cummings finished her four year career with 1,061 points and 731 rebounds. Park will also miss the services of Brianne Edwards from last year. Edwards finished the season averaging 13.9 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. Edwards was the only Pirate to start and appear in all 27 games a year ago. Edwards and Cummings were named to the 2009 A.I.I. All-Independent Team for their stellar season, which was announced during the quarterfinal round of the A.I.I. Tournament at Tullis Arena in Orangeburg, S.C. Park’s season scoring high was 69 against Brescia and season low was in a loss to Columbia when the Pirates scored 32 points. Park went 3-6 at the Breckon Sports Center and went 2-12 on the road and 0-4 in neutral site games. Park had 3,791 fans pack the Breckon Sports Center on the year and averaged 421 fans per contest. The Pirates went 1-6 against AMC foes last year, picking up their lone win against McKendree on Nov. 1.

Claude English, enters his 14th year as Park University’s Director of Athletics, serving as Park’s AD since January 1996. He is in his 19th year as a member of the athletics staff at Park University, as he coached the Pirate men’s basketball squad for 13 seasons from 1992-2005. During English’s guidance as athletic director, Park athletics has un-dergone vast improvements, including the addition of women’s golf and baseball as intercollegiate sports. Additionally, English has overseen numerous facility improvements, including the 1,500-seat Julian Field, home to Park University men’s and women’s soccer, as well as Breckon Sports Center, which houses Park’s men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s volleyball and adminis-trative offices. Breckon Sports Center, named after past University President, Dr. Donald J. Breckon, also houses an indoor practice facility for fall and spring sports. Additionally, Park has also won 45 conference championships under English’s watch as AD, and Pirate athletic programs have advanced to at least one NAIA national event in each of his previous 13 years leading the department. Under English’s watch as A.D., 144 students have earned All-America Scholar-Athlete honors, while 76 individuals were named athletic All-Americans. In 2008 Park athletics had another banner year, as the softball pro-gram qualified for its first ever NAIA National Championship appearance and picked up a win in the National Tournament along the way. Park’s women’s soccer program qualified for its eighth NAIA National Tourna-ment appearance and the men’s squad qualified for its ninth appearance and seventh in a row.

Park’s baseball team finished 2008 with a 34-12 record, which set the mark for most wins all-time in a season for the program. During the 2007-08 season, Park made history under English’s watch, winning its second men’s volleyball National Invitational Tournament Championsip in April, followed by the school’s first-ever regular-season conference championship in softball. Women’s golf also advanced to its first-ever national tournament in ‘08 after winning its first-ever Region IV championship, accom-plishing the feat in the program’s fifth year of varsity status. In addi-tion to the nine Park squads that advanced to national competition, three more sports – women’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball – were within one game of qualifying for national tournaments in ‘07-08. The winningest coach in Park men’s basketball history with a record of 182-207, English’s coaching tenure was highlighted by the Pirates’ run to the NAIA Final Four in 1997-98, which ended with a school-record mark of 27-8. English was honored at the national tournament with the Charles A. Krigel Award for outstanding sports-manship, while his team was awarded the Dr. James Naismith-Emil S. Liston Sportsmanship Award for the team recognized as most sportsmanlike at the tourney. After playing basketball for Christian College in Dallas, Texas, and the University of Rhode Island, English was selected in the NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers where he played the 1970-71 sea-son. English also played in the Eastern Basketball Association for the Hartford Capitals, the affiliate team for the Philadelphia 76ers. In 1973-74, English won the Eastern Basketball Association Champi-onship with the Capitals. He was a three-year captain at Hartford. He joined the coaching staff at the University of Rhode Island in 1972 where he remained for 12 years, including four seasons as the head coach from 1981-84. English was named Coach of the Year in the Atlantic 10 Conference in 1981. Overall, he owns a 227-277 combined career record in 17 sea-sons as a head coach at Park University and Rhode Island.
