2009–2010 Annual Report

Letter from the PresidentDear Alumni and Friends,

It was a year for the history books.

• Our football program broke into the national Division II Top Ten, and finished last year ranked 19th in the country. Not to be outdone, the UC men’s soccer team made it to the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament and Head Coach Chad Duernberger, ’06, was named national Division II Soccer Coach of the Year.

• UC brought two controversial figures together for the “Forum on Energy,” featuring Massey Energy CEO Don Blankenship and environmental activist, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., gleaning more national attention than any prior event at UC.

• We added a $22 million apartment/parking facility next to the School of Pharmacy, on the former site of Dickinson Hall. The innovative design won a “Growing Smart” award from the City of Charleston.

• The UC Annual Fund remained healthy despite a weak economy – a testament to the loyalty of our supporters and the value they place on making private higher education accessible to students.

• I traveled far and wide, from Slovakia and Turkey to Washington, DC, and Little Rock, AR, speaking about the outcomes-based, assessment-saturated curriculum that has come to be UC’s trademark. Watch for an in-depth look at Learning Your Way in the next issue of the Maroon & Gold magazine.

• UC granted degrees to the first Doctors of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.). Never before in the history of Morris Harvey College/University of Charleston has the institution awarded a doctoral degree. The increased number of graduates forced us to seek a larger venue for commencement. You can see the result on the cover – a memorable outdoor commencement on the riverfront lawn.

This Annual Report gives you the highlights of a year in the life of the University. As always, we seek excellence – in teaching, in learning and in service to our students. A printed magazine can only say so much; it is my hope that you visit campus often to see it for yourselves.

Sincerely,

Dr. Edwin H. Welch President

2009–2010 Annual Report 5

After graduating from high school, Dr. Letha Zook left her home in small-town Chambersburg, PA, for Messiah College, just 45 minutes away, to play col-legiate field hockey and follow her aspirations of be-coming a physical education teacher and coach. Little did the University of Charleston’s new Vice President for Academic Life and Dean of the Faculty know that cross-country travels and a successful career in higher education awaited.

A three-sport athlete growing up, it only seemed natu-ral at the time that Dr. Zook would pursue a career that would keep her involved in athletics. However, during her first two years at Messiah her interests changed from instructing players from the sidelines to helping injured athletes get back on the field.

“I loved the idea of physical therapy and helping peo-ple maximize their potential despite illness or injury,” said Dr. Zook.

Dr. Letha Zook: VP, Dean, Cow LadyBy Scott Castleman

Since Messiah didn’t have a PT program, Dr. Zook transferred after her sophomore year to the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. At Penn she was able to pursue a career in physical therapy, play Division I field hockey, and experience life in the hustle and bustle of a metropolitan area.

“Philadelphia was my first introduction to a city and I fell in love,” said Dr. Zook.

The country girl quickly became a city slicker. Soon after graduating from Penn, Dr. Zook headed to New York City, where she received her master’s degree from NYU and doctorate from Columbia. And when she wasn’t sitting in classes she was teaching them. Dr. Zook rekindled her passion for working with stu-dents and developed a funny nickname as well.

“When I was teaching kinesiology and anatomy I would use examples from the farm, so the kids started call-ing me the ‘Cow Lady,’” said Dr. Zook. “Soon they started bringing me little cow orna-ments and then one of them found out about ‘Cows on Parade’ from the Metropoli-tan Museum of Art, so people started buying me those col-lectibles as well.”

When she was ready for a change of scenery, Dr. Zook packed up her bovine collectibles and moved about as far away as she could to Northridge, CA. She taught at

Cal State Northridge for two years before heading to Charles Drew University in Los Angeles to help start a PT school there. Unfortunately, the program never came to fruition, after an unfriendly affirmative action ruling in 1998 caused funding to disappear.

“I was sitting in California thinking, ‘I took the wrong job this time,’ when I received a call from Wheeling Jesuit telling me they were looking for a director of PT,” said Zook. “So I came back east in 1998.”

Dr. Zook said it took some time to adjust to Wheeling after living in big cities, but it grew on her. She was instrumental in getting the PT school recertified and rose through the ranks to Academic Vice President. She enjoyed her 12 years at WJSU but the opportunity to come to UC was too good to pass up.

“I’ve watched the University of Charleston grow for the last 12 years from Wheeling,” said Dr. Zook. “I have always admired President Welch, so when this job came open I felt it was probably time for me to leave.” Since arriving this past summer Dr. Zook says that she has fallen in love with the city of Charleston.

The Cow Lady’s prestigious career has led her across the country and back, but Dr.

Welch and the UC family hope to keep her here for many years to come.

“I’ve watched the University of Charleston grow for the last 12 years from Wheeling. I have always admired President Welch, so when this job came open I felt it was probably time for me to leave.”

“ “Dr. Zook shows off her cow collection.

Fraternity Offers “Greek Challenge”

Dear Greek Alumni,

Oh, the times we had with our fraternity brothers and sorority sisters! I could elaborate on

the memories from Morris Harvey/University of Charleston, but they are probably better

left unwritten.

This past April I had the pleasure of coming back to campus during Greek Weekend, along

with 150 other Greeks and alumni. What a sight! If you haven’t been back for a while you

will be amazed at the growth and beauty of our beloved alma mater. UC has advanced itself

beyond my imagination and we should all be proud.

While on campus I learned about the successes of The Vision: UC campaign, which has

transformed the campus with new residence halls, graduate programs, and an expanded cur-

riculum. For the final phase the University is planning to construct a new Sports & Fitness

Center to replace Eddie King Gym, the oldest structure on campus, and Gorman Physical

Education Building. Over the past decade, seven of the 11 buildings on campus have been

built and those remaining have been renovated — except for Eddie King. I knew I wanted

to help.

Therefore, it is my pleasure, with the endorsement of the University, to announce the Greek

Challenge. We would like for each Greek organization to participate in the challenge,

which will make a huge difference for the Sports & Fitness Center campaign. The brothers

of Sigma Phi Epsilon are committed to raise $50,000 toward the project and have nearly ful-

filled this promise through several pledges. I understand other organizations have inquired

and begun the process of raising money as well.

The Office of Advancement staff will track the progress of the challenge and will publish

results in the Maroon & Gold and on the website. If you want to get involved with the

Greek Challenge or organize your fraternity or sorority, please contact Ben Beakes, vice

president for development, at 304-357-4849 or [email protected]. The challenge will

run for a period of two years starting now and ending June 30, 2012.

We have all benefited from UC and received a great education. It’s time we give back and

help our alma mater complete its vision. I hope each of you finds it appropriate to partici-

pate in this challenge. However, I know that none of you will raise more money than the Sig

Eps. Good luck, and thank you!

Sincerely,

Phil Morabito, ’79

What’s your favorite memory of the UC riverbank? Sunbathing between classes? Dorm Wars tug-of-war? Having your picture taken with the Capitol in the background? For many alumni, that memory is the annual Governor’s Cup crew races, either as a rower or as a spectator. This was evident at the annual Alumni Spring Weekend and Greek Reunion on April 23–24, sponsored by Huddleston, Bolen LLP. From as far away as Osaka, Japan, over 150 alumni gathered on that hallowed ground to reconnect with old friends and make new ones.

UC kicked off the festivities Friday night as John Duernberger, ’72, introduced his son, Chad, ’06, as UC Alumnus of the Year. In only his second season as head men’s soccer coach at UC, Chad was named the Division II national coach of the year.

The rotunda and patio were the perfect site for the reception, giving alumni the chance to mingle and reminisce.

19

Under a large tent on the riverbank, alumni began gathering on Saturday morning to watch the crew races on the Kanawha River. West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin made a surprise visit to the tent and had the opportunity to speak and be photographed with many alumni. While the festivities were scheduled to end mid-afternoon, many lingered until much later, enjoying the river and the company of good friends.

For many, this was the first trip back to campus in 30 years. While the campus had changed, the feelings of our alumni for their alma mater have only grown sweeter. David Kurtz, ’80, summed it up well in a letter written after the weekend: “There were lots of hugs, plenty of laughter, and even a few tears. My throat was raspy from talking so much, and my face hurt from smiling all day long.”

As the evening came to a close, and in the weeks that followed, many alumni expressed the same feelings David Kurtz shared as he concluded, “I often dream at night about those undergrad days, and know that if I could ever go back in time, UC would be the place to go. I’m glad that I was able to return there yesterday and spend a day on the riverbank revisiting the people and the place that helped to make me who I am today. Thanks to all of those who were in attendance, and to those who helped to make it happen. To those alums who missed it, you should try to attend a future event — the reconnections are inspiring and invigorating. The UC riverbank will always be hallowed ground to me.”

Hallowed Ground: The UC Riverbank

I often dream at night about those undergrad days, and know that if I could ever go back in time, UC would be the place to go...the reconnections are inspiring and invigorating. The UC riverbank will always be hallowed ground to me.

Photographers were stra-tegically placed on the lawn and on the rooftop of Riggleman Hall to cap-ture the occasion from every angle. Grand Mar-shal Dennis McMillen led the colorful cohort to their seats in front of a

stage directly across the river from the State Capitol. President Welch awarded 69 pharmacy doctorates, 10 MBALs, 127 bachelor’s degrees, 24 associate’s degrees, 14 executive MBAs, nine EMFAs, and three honorary degrees (see sidebar).

Serving also as the commencement speaker, Dr. Welch exhorted the graduates to “Dream Big, Plan Small.” Dewayne Kirkpatrick, a radiology student from Coalton, WV, won senior of the year honors (see story p. 34). Following the ceremony, families and friends gathered on the patio for food, drink and entertainment by the UC steel drum band to celebrate the accomplishments of the class of 2010.

As the party wound down, the weather geared up, and Mother Nature brought the outdoor celebration to an end, as 248 new University of Charleston alumni went out into the world to lead their lives of productive work, en-lightened living, and commu-nity involvement.

When asked to identify the biggest event of the 2009–10 academic year, President Welch did not hesitate: “Graduating the first class of doctoral phar-macists.” For an institution that began as Barbours-ville Seminary in 1888, this was indeed a crowning achievement.

Years of planning the vision for the future of UC came together when hundreds of parents, friends, faculty and staff gathered on the riverfront lawn on Sunday, May 2, for the 122nd Commencement of the University of Charleston. The ceremony marked many milestones: the first outdoor commencement in 20 years, the largest graduating class (248) in a decade, and the inaugural graduates not only of the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) program, but also of two new master’s programs: the Master of Business Administration and Leadership (MBAL) and Execu-tive Master of Forensic Accounting (EMFA).

2010 Honorary DegreesUC's First Pharmacists

Congratulations 2010 UC graduates!

The UC School of Pharmacy opened its doors in Au-gust 2006, and its first class of graduated in May 2010. To date, 97 percent of the UC graduates who have taken the national certification test (NAPLEX) have passed, exceeding both state and national pass rates.

Soon after commencement, the UC School of Phar-macy received the welcome news that it had

achieved full national accredi-tation from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Edu-

cation (ACPE). The ACPE awards full accreditation to

a new program that has met all standards and has graduated its

first class.

A remarkable number of graduates have garnered

As part of the commencement ceremony, UC awarded honorary degrees to a notable alumnus, a member of the West Virginia Supreme Court, and the CEO of the American Pharmacists Association. The three recipi-ents spoke at a luncheon in the Erma Byrd Gallery prior to the ceremony, and each received a doctoral hood and formal citation during commencement.

Greg Burton, ’82, is president and CEO of BrickStreet Mutual Insurance Company. He received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in recognition of his accom-plishment in transforming the West Virginia Workers’ Compensation Commission from an expensive state agency to a profitable private company.

The University also awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree to Robin Jean Davis, chief justice of the West Virginia Supreme Court. Thomas Menighan, executive vice president and CEO of the American Pharmacists Association, received an honorary Doctor of Science degree.

competitive post-graduate positions, six in pharmacy residency programs and three in clinical research fel-lowships, for a total of 13% of the graduating class. The large proportion of UC graduates in these post-graduate training opportunities is notable in any graduating class, not to mention the first graduating class from a newly established pharmacy school. About three quarters of the graduates are committed to practicing as community pharmacists, and 10 per-cent will practice in institutional settings like hospi-tals and nursing homes.

One of the primary goals of the UC program has been to improve the quality of health care in underserved regions of West Virginia and Appalachia. Approxi-mately 80 percent of the inaugural pharmacy gradu-ates will be staying in the Appalachian region: 34 percent in West Virginia, 24 percent in Kentucky, five percent each in Ohio and Maryland, and the other 12 percent spread across North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Tennessee. The remaining graduates are spread out from Delaware to Florida and as far west as California.

UC’s Best-Known Alum

Robert C.Byrd

It isn’t often that a student with a 4.0 GPA takes 53 years to graduate from college. But the late West Virginia senator and University of Charleston alumnus Robert C. Byrd was never by any means conventional.

It took Senator Byrd 16 years to begin schooling at Morris Harvey College after graduating from Mark Twain High School in Stotesbury, WV, just outside of Beckley. When he enrolled in classes in 1950, Byrd did so having already served four years as a member of the West Virginia House of Delegates.

Working as a college student and delegate would probably be more than enough to keep most people busy, but Byrd found the time to run for, and win, a seat in the state sen-ate in 1950 as well. He did all this while taking 27 course hours from the fall of 1950 to the spring of 1951 and main-taining straight A's.

Duty to his state called after Byrd’s first and only year as a student at Morris Harvey, as he went on to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives for six years. His time spent at the school was not forgotten though. He claimed political science professor Dr. Evelyn Harris was the best teacher he ever had, and once said, “I have a warm place in my heart for the University of Charleston, where I started to obtain the kind of learning that I longed for from excel-lent teachers and faculty.”

In 2003, more than a half-century after enrolling in his first class at Morris Harvey, Senator Byrd was awarded a bach-elor’s degree summa cum laude from UC. The degree was given for his work in the classroom, as well as his supe-rior work in Washington, DC. According to UC President Edwin Welch, being able to award the senator the degree

was a very special moment for everyone involved. “He was moved because he said it was ‘his’ degree,” said Dr. Welch. “This was the one he began as a student – rather than the other honorary degrees he received so often.”

The senator and his beloved wife Erma have been invalu-able to the advancement of UC and have each been hon-ored on campus. In 2004 the school unveiled the Erma Byrd Women Artists Gallery in Riggleman Hall, which features paintings and sculptures by virtually every well-known female artist from West Virginia. Although Mrs. Byrd was in poor health when the gallery was completed, Senator Byrd made sure she knew how wonderful it was.

“The most touching moment I had with Senator Byrd was when Janet and I were alone with him in the Byrd Gallery and he called his dear Erma to describe to her in loving words the gallery he knew she would never see,” said Dr. Welch.

The following year the senator announced $9.6 million in federal money for construction of the UC School of Phar-macy building, which was named in his honor. The return on investment was seen in May of 2010 as the first class of 69 pharmacy doctorates were granted by UC, helping to alleviate the critical need for more pharmacists in Appala-chia. Senator Byrd also acquired funds in recent years to renovate Riggleman Hall, helping to accommodate nurs-ing and radiology students. All of these projects have en-sured that his legacy will live on at his original alma mater.

“Senator Byrd’s work forever enriched the University, West Virginia, the United States Senate, and the nation,” said Dr. Welch. “We are grateful for his assistance and we cherish him as our best known and most influential alumnus.”

Senior of the Year Beats Long Odds to Achieve Success

Growing up, Dewayne didn’t know his father. He had walked out on the family by the time Dewayne was four. What he knew of his mother included financial struggles, involvement in criminal activities, and her eventual incarceration. When Dewayne was 13, he was adopted by complete strangers, a couple who took him in and raised him as their own child. With the care and support of his adoptive parents, he had the opportunity to rebuild his life.

Dewayne gained confidence, applied to college, and was accepted. The University of Charleston was his destination and radiology his chosen field of study. Though his adoptive parents had some money, they were retired and living on a fixed income. Dewayne felt responsible for financing school without draining his parents’ savings account. With the assistance he received from donor-funded scholarships, Dewayne was able to cover a good portion of the cost of his college education.

During the President’s Donor Appreciation Night dinner in March, Dewayne met Ed Maier, the donor who made his scholarship possible. He was able to learn firsthand what motivated the Maier Foundation’s philanthropy. What Dewayne realized was the donor of his scholarship was a genuine, down-to-earth man who believes passionately in the value of higher education. Maier shared in the emotion of the evening as Dewayne took the stage—one of four student speakers—and openly recounted his life story to a room full of teary-eyed guests.

Dewayne has flourished and become a success story despite his rocky childhood. He credits his experience

at the University of Charleston with having a profound and positive impact on his life, and says that attending UC was one of the best decisions he ever made. He graduated in May with a 3.9 grade point average, beat out 12 other accomplished seniors to win the 2010 “President’s Outstanding Senior of the Year” award, passed his radiology board exams on the first attempt, and earned a highly coveted, full-time position as a magnetic resonance imaging technician with Charleston Area Medical Center, normally a position reserved for those with 10 or more years of work experience. Because of his accomplishments in the field of radiology, he has already been asked to return to UC as an instructor after gaining a few years of work experience.

Dewayne feels fortunate for his success and acknowledges there have been many people along the way who have helped him to arrive where he is today. He hopes some day to be able to lend a hand to students in need, just as the Maier Foundation did for him. He also believes his story can inspire others to succeed and reach their goals. “The best way I can help students is to tell them how I made it through,” says Dewayne. And with many students in need of encouragement and financial help for college, he knows he will be telling his story for a long time.

By Stephanie Martin

If you would like to help students at the University of Charleston reach their educational and career goals and realize their dreams, please consider establishing or contributing to a scholarship. Over 95% of students at UC rely on some form of financial aid. Please contact the Office of Advancement at 304.357.4735 for more information.

It’s hard to believe the Dewayne Kirkpatrick of today – accomplished college graduate and winner of the University of Charleston’s 2010 “President’s Outstanding Senior of the Year” award — could have ever lacked vision for his future. Once you know Dewayne’s story, however, you will understand.

As a child, Dewayne broke his arm, sparking an in-terest in radiology. Sitting in the hospital and looking at the x-ray of his broken arm, he was fascinated what he saw on the film. In middle

school he started toying with the idea of a career in radiol-

ogy, and by high school he was taking classes to help him prepare for a future in the field. By his own ad-mission, it wasn’t until his senior year of high

school that Dewayne even began to consider col-

lege an option. Until then, his focus had been on mending his tattered self-esteem and on reforming definitions of love and trust, results of a tumultuous childhood.

Endowed scholarships provide a continuing source of financial aid and enhance the University of Charleston’s ability to attract and enroll the best young people, regardless of their financial circumstances. Donors may provide financial aid to students either by designating a gift to be awarded as

scholarship funds or endowing a permanent named scholarship. An endowed scholarship required total contributions of $10,000 for scholarships created prior to June 21, 2002; $20,000 for scholarships created between June 21, 2002 and July 1, 2004; and $50,000 for scholarships created thereafter.

Annually funded named scholarships may be created for a minimum gift of $5,000 per year for at least five years.

The Erickson Alumni House has served as host to hundreds of visiting alumni since it was purchased and renovated in 1991, but the growth of campus, in-crease in alumni activity, and need for professional offices eventually caught up with the once residential home. This past summer, the newly christened “Er-ickson Alumni Center” moved to the heart of campus on the first floor of Riggleman Hall.

“The Alumni House was located at the end of campus, off the beaten path for visitors,” said Ben Beakes, ’02, vice president for development. “Now, we are visible and accessible to everyone who comes on campus.”The move reflects the importance of alumni to the

University and recognizes the need for them to al-ways have a place to call their own. The seven-office suite is also a more efficient workspace, providing the alumni and development staff with an environ-ment more conducive to work. “In the old house, we were spread out on two floors and had no doors on most of the offices. Now, our space is better or-ganized and we can talk with our visitors in a more comfortable atmosphere,” said Beakes.

A new exterior entrance at the front of the west wing of Riggleman Hall makes the center easy to find and easy to enter. Since the move, which occurred on June 22, 2010, several alumni have already taken the opportunity to check out the new space. The new lo-cation has increased traffic to the center. More alum-ni are stopping by in person, and fewer are calling to find out where the alumni offices are.

As the alumni and development staff continue to of-fer programs and opportunities for alumni to come back to campus and be involved with the University, they hope the new space will serve as the center for reconnections. “It’s important to UC for our alumni to feel appreciated and ‘at home’ on campus. In the same way, we hope our alumni want to invest their time and resources in making their treasured alma mater feel like home for future students,” Beakes said.

All alumni are encouraged to drop by the new Erick-son Alumni Center when visiting campus—for direc-tions, for information, or just to say “Hello.”

This year marks the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s election as president. During a campaign swing through West Virginia, Kennedy addressed a capacity crowd in Morris Harvey College’s Geary Auditorium. This photo was part of an exhibit at the state Culture Center commemorating JFK’s 1960 West Virginia campaign, and we’re guessing that the young people pictured were Morris Harvey students.

If you can help us identify the students in this photo, or have other information about the event, please write or email Jennie Ferretti, vice president for communications, at 2300 MacCorkle Avenue SE, Charleston, WV 25304, or [email protected]. We’ll publish the results in the next issue of the Maroon & Gold magazine. For more of Kennedy’s campus appearance, you can access a five-minute film segment at http://www.ucwv.edu/about_uc/historical_alamanac.aspx.

Where were you in 1960?

2009–2010 Annual Report 41

UC men’s basketball coach Mark Downey loved his first coaching job. The only downside was he had to avoid catching Barton College fever while he was there. No, the 1995 Golden Eagle alum wasn’t dodging school spirit. He wasn’t even avoiding falling in love with the college’s campus set in Wilson, NC. Downey was actually ducking every infectious germ and illness afflicting students as he navigated through the school infirmary to his living quarters.

“I had a little room with a closet and the bathroom was down the hall,” said Downey. “On down the hallway was a big room with four hospital beds, and when stu-dents got sick with something they didn’t want to have taken back to the dorms they would have them stay there.”

Besides his humble living quarters, the only other compensation Downey received as an assistant coach was three meals per day in the cafeteria. He worked at a local junior college every morning, where he tutored adult students for an actual paycheck.

Basketball FeverBy Scott Castleman

“I wasn’t making any money, didn’t have anything to my name, but I don’t ever remember being happier,” said Downey.

After paying his dues at Barton, Downey made coach-ing stops at Marshall University (assistant), Indepen-dence Community College (assistant and head coach), and the University of New Orleans (assistant) before landing the head coaching job at Arkansas Tech. ATU had only won eight conference games over the previ-ous three years, but the Morgantown, WV, native saw the potential. Four short years later, Downey and the Wonder Boys compiled a remarkable 30-1 regular sea-son record and a No. 1 national ranking heading into the Division II NCAA tournament.

Despite falling a little short in the tournament, the 2009–10 season seemed to be a launch pad for the fu-ture of the program in Russellville, AR, with Downey as the pilot. Fate stepped in though as long time UC coach Greg White resigned in April and opened the door for the former Golden Eagle guard to return home.

“Before I made it to Arkansas Tech, I thought that if I was going to coach Division II that UC is the place I would like to be,” said Downey. “When Coach (Greg) White decided to leave I got a bunch of calls, and so at that point I thought if I was pursued I would really have to think about it.”

Thanks to encouragement from Coach White and oth-ers, Downey did more than think about it as he ac-cepted the job and the challenge to return the Golden Eagles to the top. Although he was a lights-out shooter as a player, fans should expect more emphasis put on the defensive end by their new coach.

“When I played I couldn’t guard a soul but now I am a defensive and rebounding coach because it wins games,” said Downey. “Playing tough, smart and hard makes up for a lot of other things. There are going to be nights when you don’t shoot the ball very well, and when that happens you better be ready to do the other things that can help you win.”

Downey believes that the talent he was left by White is much better than what he inherited at Arkansas Tech, but he isn’t ready to make predictions for the upcom-ing year. He isn’t afraid to state the long-term goals for his program though.

“We want to play for it all,” said Downey. “People always tell me that, historically, teams from the WVIAC haven’t gone very deep in the NCAA tournament, but we are going to use that as a chip on our shoulder.”

Coach Downey has come a long way from his modest beginnings at Bar-ton College. Much to the liking of his wife, Ericka, the couple is not re-siding anywhere close to the school infirmary. But that doesn’t mean his team isn’t capable of spreading a little bas-ketball fever this year.
