THE DWIGHT SCHOOLFOUNDATION
A Year of Trips and Explorations
Each year Dwight students - from our youngest preschoolers to our graduating seniors - take part in a variety of trips and explorations. Some may be local day trips that enhance the curriculum, like the third grade’s field trip to the Science Barge in Yonkers, New York. Others are cultural immersions in a foreign country, like the WISER Club’s two-week journey to Kenya to volunteer at a unique girls’ boarding school. Regardless of the setting, each exploration enables students to embark on an important voyage of self-discovery. Ultimately, we hope that all our students will use their “spark of genius” to build a better world - both near and far. This Annual Report spotlights some of the local and global trips that Dwight students took last year.

Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends of Dwight and Woodside,
Letter from the Chancellor
Dwight is a passionate community of learners who give tirelessly to assure each student learns life skills. Dwight’s three pillars are a rigorous International Bacca-laureate program, a person-alized process that nurtures and celebrates every student’s “Spark of Genius,” and a fo-cus on student leadership. These provide the unshake-
able foundation for a meaningful life. Parents, teachers, alumni and students working together are the glue that makes a Dwight education special.
It is through your extraordinary generosity that the Dwight School Foundation had another record year and continues to have a major positive impact on the educational experience of every student. The Foundation’s Annual Fund Committee, under the leadership of Trustee Susan Kessler (Parent ’10), Au-drey Zinman (Parent ’11), and Sam Droulias (Parent ’23) raised a record $1,233,268 from 522 donors. Part of this total came from the Senior Committee, co-chaired by Toni Bernstein and Liz Schiff, which
raised $207,900 and enabled us to renovate the 89th Street entryway and stairwell. Another part came from a growing number of alumni donors thanks to the efforts of Alumni Council member Blain Namm ’97 and a strong team of alumni volunteers. Our Spring Benefit Committee co-chairs Jane McEvoy-Petrycki (Parent ’11), Hege Eriksen (Parent ’21), and Heather Barrett-Babich (Parent ’24) organized a wonderful auction at The Rubin Museum that raised an additional $254,497 to support our programs. Finally, thanks to the efforts of Trustee Richard Zin-man, Dwight also received $1,513,333 in capital gifts enabling us to begin Phase I of the brownstone reno-vation project.
We are enormously grateful to all of you for donat-ing your dollars, time, and other resources to strength-en our School. We will continue to explore ways to ensure a world-class education where children learn to use their “Spark of Genius” to build a better world. Thank you for your continued support on this won-derful journey.
Fondly,
Stephen Spahn, Chancellor

Middle School Outdoor Exploration in Vancouver
Last June, middle school students participated in a outdoor exploration camp at Dwight International School, which occupies twenty-three beautiful acres of rain forest on the shores of Vancouver’s Lake Shawnigan. Students explored the natural history of the island through a variety of outdoor activities including kayaking, canoeing, hiking, swimming, and sailing.4

Community Service Program in Peru
Last summer, sixteen students traveled to Lima, Peru, as part of a cultural immersion and community service program. Students stayed with Peruvian families, took part in daily Spanish classes, and built houses in the low income Lima suburb of Pamplona.
It is a privilege to work with our dedicated Foundation Trustees to en-sure that Dwight students and faculty have the finest resources possible. The growing generosity of the Dwight-Woodside community has truly been inspiring.
Our success would not be possible without the hard work of numerous volunteers besides our Trustees who have dedicated significant time and effort to support the Foundation’s various initiatives: the Annual Fund Committee, Senior Gift Committee, Spring Benefit Committee, the Par-ents Association, and the Alumni Council. Nor would our success be pos-sible without the many donors whose contributions have enriched the Dwight-Woodside experience for all students.
We are most grateful to Chancellor Stephen H. Spahn whose vision and unwavering belief that every student has a “Spark of Genius” inspires us all. We look forward to another amazing year. On behalf of the students and faculty of The Dwight School, thank you!
Best regards,
Susan Kessler (Parent ’10) Dwight School Foundation, Trustee Board Chair

Letter from The Dwight School Foundation Trustee Chair
Dear Fellow Parents, Alumni, and Friends of The Dwight School,
The Rigorous International Baccalaureate (IB) Program. Dwight is one of only two independent schools
in Manhattan to offer the prestigious IB program and was
the first in North America to offer the full IB program from
pre-k to twelfth grade. The IB provides students with an in-
ternational benchmark recognized around the globe to assess
their performance. It challenges them to undertake projects
and research papers which will draw on various academic dis-
ciplines. It makes them reflect on their own learning process,
and it pushes them to use all their talents to serve their com-
munity. The IB Program truly prepares students to be leaders
locally and globally. Nearly half of Dwight’s Class of 2010
graduated with the full IB Diploma.
Diverse Students and Faculty. While two-thirds of
our student population is from New York, the other third
draws students from nearly forty countries. Approximately
twenty-five countries are represented in the faculty. This mix
of different minds and different perspectives leads to great
learning and self-discovery.
Personalized Learning – the “Spark of Genius.”
While the IB provides a rigorous, well-structured program to
follow, Dwight always puts the student – and their strengths
and interests – first. No two students are alike, and the School
will go out of its way to find and nurture each child’s unique
‘Spark of Genius.’ One may be a budding photographer, an-
other a future architect or engineer, and still another a great
comedian in the making. To help them on their path, Dwight
may craft a unique study abroad program for just one student,
fashion a one-of-a-kind physical workout regime supporting
a particular child’s dreams, partner a student with an industry
leader for a rare mentorship, or provide a one-on-one tutorial
to help a student overcome a specific academic challenge. No
two journeys at Dwight are the same.

Class of 2010 Senior Gift Donors
Thanks to the wonderful efforts of Senior Committee Co-chairs Toni Bernstein and Liz Schiff and the rest of the Senior Committee, the Class of 2010 families raised $207,500 for the Senior Gift, the second largest Senior Gift total ever. The funds were used to renovate the 89th Street entryway and stairwell - and we have already received rave reviews of this beautified corridor.

Journey to Kenya
Last March, nine Dwight students spent ten days in Muhuru Bay, Kenya, at WISER (Women’s Institute for Secondary Education and Research), with whom Dwight became a Partner School in 2009. Acting as jour-nalists, students created video documentaries, through which they told the personal stories of five of the WISER girls. Hannah Levi ’10 took this photograph as the group was departing to return back to New York.

Fifth Grade Exchange in London
In April, the fifth grade class traveled to London as part of an exchange with our sister school, The North London International School. Students participated in classes and toured historic London throughout the week. The trip is a highlight of the culminating year of the lower school, building confidence and devel-oping independence in our future middle school students. 42

The Rooftop Greenhouse
This was the question I posed to my fifth grade Take Action Club members one winter day last year. As a member of Dickinson College’s Teachers for Tomor-row Program, I had been awarded a grant to enhance The Dwight School’s curricu-lum and community. While it might have been more straightforward to use the grant for expensive school supplies or an amaz-ing field trip, I felt that it would be best used to empower my students to take so-cial action.
After teaching elementary-school stu-dents for seven years, I have found that fundraising is often the preferred method of helping others in need. Perhaps it’s easier to send money to charitable organizations, but I wanted my students to grapple with understanding complex problems, devel-oping potentials solutions, and getting physically involved with initiating change.
After researching various local and in-ternational community issues, my students thought that constructing a greenhouse on Dwight’s roof would be an effective way to model sustainable practices to their peers, parents, teachers, and community mem-bers. They decided that vegetables grown in the greenhouse would be harvested and donated to a local homeless shelter.
With the help of twelve faculty mem-bers and students, we finally assembled our greenhouse in July. We have already harvested tomatoes, basil, lettuce, and peppers, but we are far from finished; it is our hope that our project will continue to serve our school and local community for years to come. It is also my hope that this project will instill an understanding in my students that making a difference is more than fundraising; it’s about making an ac-tive effort to bring about change.
The $10,000 QuestionBy Jennifer Betz, Second Grade Teacher
What would you do if you could spend $10,000 to make a difference?

Third Grade Science Barge Trip
As part of their April unit on energy, the third grade class traveled to the Science Barge, a sustainable urban farm located on a barge in Yonkers. The barge uses only the energy it converts to grow over one ton of produce (melons, tomatoes, cucumbers, arugula, lettuce, and strawberries) that gets donated to homeless shelters.

Parents Association
Back to School Evening — Volunteers hand out information packages and register parents.
Timothy/Bentley House Halloween Parties — Parents assist staff members in planning, setting up, chaperoning, and cleaning up after the event.
Bentley House Thanksgiving Basket Event — Each No-vember, Bentley House students gather to prepare Thanksgiving Dinner baskets for families who cannot afford a special holiday meal. Parents su-pervise the preparation of the baskets.
Book Fair — The annual Book Fair, which is held at the Barnes & Noble Superstore (Broadway and 82nd Street) is an important school-wide event that helps us raise money, provide books for our library and class-rooms, and buy gifts for family, friends, and ourselves. Volunteers help plan and publicize the Fair, obtain and distribute classroom wish lists and suggested reading lists, and act as chaperones during the event.
School Uniform Sale — Parents are asked to donate their children’s outgrown and gently used uniforms so that they may be re-sold to Dwight families at a very nominal charge. PA volunteers sort clothing and staff the sales.
Faculty Valentine’s Day Breakfast — On Valentine’s Day, the PA offers teachers and staff a special buffet breakfast to thank them for their dedication and hard work. Parents donate food items and help set up and serve breakfast.
Skating Party — The annual “Skating Under the Stars” ice-skating party takes place each March. Volunteers distribute skates and work at the registration table.
Safety Patrol Committee — The PA organizes and oversees an after-school Parent Safety Patrol to increase street safety for students as they make their way home from school each day. By taking an active role in this program parents help make the entire school community a safer and more enjoyable place. In addition to protecting school children on their way home from school, this program allows patrollers to get to know fel-low parents. Safety Patrol is a valuable service to our school.
Woodside Spring Fair — The Annual Woodside PA Spring Fair is awonderful time for Woodside families to come together on a weekend and celebrate the beautiful spring weather. Children participate in activities such as seed planting, cupcake making, t-shirt decorating, face painting, singing, and dancing. Parent volunteers set up and run each activity and help clean up after the event.

Volunteer Thank You Reception
The Dwight School Foundation’s mission is to bring additional resources to The Dwight School and its Woodside Preschool to ensure the highest quality ed-ucation possible. In June, Trustee Chair Susan Kessler generously hosted a reception at The Lotos Club to acknowledge the following groups who play a critical role in supporting this mission:
School Governors and Foundation Trustees advise and work in conjunction with the Chancellor to think critically about the future of the School and the resources needed to implement its Strategic Plan.
The Annual Fund Committee solicits gifts from all members of the Dwight community to provide support for student financial aid, faculty professional development, and other items which will enrich the experi-ence at Dwight and Woodside, above and beyond what is covered by tuition and fees.
The Senior Gift Committee solicits Annual Fund gifts from 12th grade families and earmarks the funds for key items they have chosen as a legacy gift to improve the School.
The Spring Benefit Committee plans and hosts a wonderful com-munity event, for which it solicits in-kind and monetary donations to raise dollars to supplement the Annual Fund.
The Dwight and Woodside Parents Associations welcome and connect parents to the community, promote volunteerism, encour-age attendance at school events, and help address parent concerns to support faculty and build community spirit.
The Alumni Council and Class Representatives help identify and promote meaningful ways for graduates to get involved with the School and stay connected with each other.

Ways to Give
The Annual Fund is the backbone of The Dwight School Foundation’s fundraising efforts - and there are many different ways in which you can make a contribution:
Cash - All cash (including check and credit card) gifts are fully
tax-deductible. Gifts can be made using the attached pledge enve-
lope or online at www.dwight.edu/givingtodwight.
Securities - A gift of appreciated stock which has been held for
more than one year allows you to avoid the capital gains tax on
the appreciation. It also qualifies you for an income tax charitable
deduction based on the fair market value of the stock on the date
you make the gift.
Matching Gift - Matching gifts are an easy way to increase the
value of your contribution. If you and/or your spouse work for
a matching gift company, please obtain the necessary form from
your personnel office and send it along with your gift to The
Foundation.
Make a Pledge - Pledges can be fulfilled with one payment or
multiple payments and simply need to be completed in full by
June 30, 2011.

Global Initiatives Network Conference in Geneva
In March, Dwight students participated in the Global Initiatives Network (GIN) conference in Geneva, Switzerland. Drawing students from all over the world, GIN was developed to help empower teenagers to work with their international peers to develop solutions for global issues. When not presenting or attend-ing sessions, our students enjoyed exploring Geneva’s historical neighborhoods.
