, Mysore Sponsored a Two Day National Conference on "MultimediaEnhanced Language Teaching" (MELT-09) was organized by the RM.K.College of Engineering and Technology on 7th & 8th August 2009.

The Principal Dr. K KThyagharajan welcomed the gathering.Dr.J.RNirmala, Programme Co-oridnator, briefed the audience of theObjective of the conference.

The Vice Chairman of the RM.K group of institutions, ShriRM.Kishore, presided over the inaugural function and hoped thatthe outcome of this two day conference would be very useful for thefaculty, researchers and students. It would stimulate their interest intechnological advancement that is in vogue. He expressed the desirethat many research problems related to technology based teachingwould come to light through this conference for which solutions wouldbe found. The Vice Chairman released the Proceedings- a colourful

volume containing intellectual properties of the participants of the Conference -MELT-09

The chief - guest of the day Dr.KKarunakaran, Professor Emeritus, University of Michigan, USA congratulated the RMKCET fororganizing the national conference and stressed the importance of the use of multimedia as a tool for teacher- learner interactionand improvement.

The Special Guest of the day Dr.L.Ramamoorthy, Head, Education Technology Unit, Central Institute of Indian Languages,Mysore delivered the special address, emphasizing the need for Technology Enhanced Language Teaching.

Dr.KKuppusamy, Dean, RM.KCollege of Engineering and Technology felicitated the organizers and participants.

The conference had six sessions. The first session on "Multimediaand Language Teaching" was started off with a keynote address byDr.N.Deivasundaram, Professor and Head, Department of Languages,University of Madras. Another excellent keynote address on TeachingEnglish Spelling through Multimedia was given byDr.PanchananMohanty,Professor, Department of Linguistics, University of Hyderabad.

Issues in Creation of Phonetic Resources for South-Asian LanguagePedagogy given by Dr.Peri BaskaraRao, ILCAA,Tokyo University of ForeignStudies gave an indepth insight into the ways in which language and thepronunciation of it works for the purpose of perfect communication.

Dr.M.Ganesan, Professor, Dept. of Linguistics, Annamalai University,discussed the use ofInteractive Multimedia Language Teaching Packages,and how to design and develop them.

Dr.S.Rajendran, Professor and Head, Department of Linguistics,Tamil University, Thanjavur stressed the need for creating and making useof a Conceptual Lexicon for Knowledge Representation and Transfer.

Dr.Ganesh Ram, CEO, Mobile Veda, introduced the novel method ofLearning and Teaching of different languages and core subjects of studymaking a very large use of mobile phones. It was indeed a mobile phoneenhanced language teaching (MELT).

Every Key note address was followed by a discussion and later bypaper presentations. Papers were presented by 63 scholars from all overthe country and abroad which were very innovative and they generateda lot of productive discussion among the participants.

The chief guest Dr.P.Suresh Chander Pal inaugurated the associationand he motivated the members of association to join IEEE.
