Greetings!

At Spartanburg Methodist College (SMC), intercollegiate athletic programs place an emphasis on developing successful student athletes who compete in the classroom as well as they do in athletic competitions. Our outstanding record of success, both on and off the field or court, has placed SMC athletes in a strong position for their eventual smooth transition into 4-year college and university athletic programs, and sometimes even into professional sports. Just ask us – we can provide many examples of success stories!

SMC is proud to offer intercollegiate athletics in nine different sports, for a total of 14 varsity teams (seven women’s teams; seven men’s teams). In addition, we offer two leadership teams in Cheerleading and Dance. The hard work and resulting success of our coaches and teams earned SMC a Top 50 ranking in the National Junior College Athletic Association’s (NJCAA) scholarship division programs for our participation in national level events in the past year: eight of our 14 teams advanced to national competitions! SMC was the only NJCAA Region X program ranked in the Top 50! This kind of recognition is not only well-deserved, but should demonstrate to all of us that the SMC student athlete and coaching staff are a force to be reckoned with.

The theme for SMC athletics in 2009-2010 is “ATTITUDE”, based upon Phillipians 2:5, “Your attitude should be the same that Christ Jesus had.” The message being conveyed in our athletic program is that no matter how great we are, we are not “superhuman” and don’t claim special privileges. We encourage our student athletes to live selfless, obedient lives … and to give praise to the honor of God the Father. After all, our energy and success comes from that which God has given.

On behalf of the community of SMC – our students, faculty, staff, administration, alumni, Board of Trustees … and, of course, Chuck, our Pioneer Mascot – we thank you for your support of Pioneer Athletics and welcome you to our campus. And don’t forget, we encourage you to cheer us on loudly to victory!

Go Pioneers!

Making a Difference in Just Two Years The first two years after high school graduation are times

of self-exploration and exciting discovery. For most of us, the decisions during those two years are crucial ones guiding the rest of our lives. Who am I? What do I want to do with my life? What do I want to study?

SMC provides a great place to make those two years count. For nearly a century, we've helped thousands answer those crucial questions and make life-chang-ing discoveries.

Tools to Discover SMC offers a full liberal arts academic curriculum. Instead

of huge lecture halls where classes are taught by graduate assistants, SMC offers a student-faculty ratio of about 21-1. Our students and faculty get to know one another.

Discover the Leader in Yourself You don't have to wait until your junior or senior year to

become a team captain, editor of the school newspaper, or leader of a student organization. Your two-year experience puts you on the fast track, allowing you to become leaders without competition from juniors and seniors.

Dicover the joy of service There's a lot to discover about yourself and your world.

SMC gives you the place and the time to do so. Our students reach out to others in the community through a variety of ser-vice learning opportunities. Others benefit, and so do you.

More to discover• Fourteen nationally-recognized intercollegiate sports teams• A diverse student population from many states,

countries and religious backgrounds• Focused tutoring programs and facilities provide help

where needed most• Ninety-Five percent of our students receive some form of

financial aidMore than 90 percent of our graduates transfer to other insti-

tutions of higher learning. Hopefully they are better-prepared because they took time to make some important discoveries in their freshman and sophomore years at Spartanburg Methodist College.

Why Spartanburg Methodist College? Because the first two years of college are the most impor-

tant years in college.

FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTORWelcome to Spartanburg Methodist College, “Home of the Pioneers”! Spartanburg Methodist College has a strong history of excellence in athletics. SMC has over 250 Student Athletes that compete on 14 Athletic Teams as well as Cheer and Dance Squads. The SMC coaching staff is experienced and dedicated to their students and their sport, leading our teams to excellence in all areas. Our mission is to enhance Academics, Values, Athletics, Commitment, and Citizenship for all student athletes.

SMC competes at the Division 1 level of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). As a two-year institution, SMC athletes have the opportunity to be leaders as soon as they arrive on campus both in the playing arena, around campus and in our community. Last year the SMC Volleyball, Baseball, Softball, Wrestling, Tennis and Cross Country represented SMC at the NJCAA National Championships. SMC hosted the 2008 NJCAA Division Cross Country Championships, the 2009 NJCAA Region 10 Soccer and Volleyball Championships, and the 2010 Region 10 Women’s Basketball Championships.

SMC Athletics had 8 NJCAA Academic All Americans and finished #44, out of 335, in the NATYCAA (National Alliance of Two Year College Athletic Administrators) Team Athletic Award standings.

Many of SMC’s student athletes have continued their athletic participation and education at four-year colleges and universities such as Francis Marion, Georgia Southern, West Georgia, Limestone College, College of Charleston, Converse College, USC Columbia and USC Upstate. SMC athletes are also committed to the Spartanburg community, which is demonstrated in the thousands of service and volunteer hours they log each year with area schools and organizations.

As the only two-year, private residential college in South Carolina, SMC offers a unique opportunity for students to excel in academics and athletics. SMC’s focus is excellence in both areas: athletics and academics, to prepare our student athletes to move on to their junior and senior years at four-year institutions.

Our motto for 2009-10 is “ATTITUDE”. Our focus scripture is Philippians 2:5, which teach us that as children of God we should strive to have an ATTITUDE like Christ Jesus. SMC strives for excellence for its student athletes and it is our goal this year for the Pioneers to have a positive ATTITUDE on academics, athletics, and life.

On the playing field or in preparation for a career, SMC is dedi-cated to the success of it students! “GO PIONEERS!”

Coach

Spartanburg Methodist College head baseball coach Tim Wallace returns in 2009-2010 for his nine-teenth season at the helm of the Pioneers. His previous teams have produced an 807-247 record with NJCAA Region X Championships in 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2003, 2006, 2007 and 2009. His .765 win-ning percentage ranks him among the leaders of those actively coach-ing at the NJCAA level. He has gar-nered many awards, included being named Region X Coach of the Year (1992, 1998, 2000, 2007), Carolina’s Junior College Conference Coach of the Year (1992), Louisville Slug-ger Coaches Award (1993, 1996, 1997, 2001) and Diamond ABCA Regional Coach of the Year (2001, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2009). In 2001, Wallace earned his first Eastern Dis-trict Coach of the Year award as his 49-12 club sported the best record in Grand Junction, Colorado at the NJCAA World Series. He earned his second Eastern District Coach of the Year award in 2003, when his club posted a 50-16 record. His 2007 squad earned him his third by post-ing a school record 54 wins while finishing third at the Junior College World Series. A fourth was awarded after last year’s team finished 5th at JUCO with a school record 55 wins.

In addition to having successful teams, Wallace has helped indi-viduals realize their potential. Three Pioneers have participated on the NJCAA All-Stars, a group put to-gether to face international compe-tition. Fourteen players have been named NJCAA All-Americans during his tenure, while 57 have signed pro-

fessional contracts. Of these 57, 19 are actively playing and pursuing a shot at the Major Leagues. In 2002 Coach Wallace had his first player reach the majors, 1998 graduate Or-lando Hudson with the Toronto Blue Jays. Hudson is now a three time Gold Glove winner and four time All-

Star second baseman with the Los Angeles Dodgers. A second Pioneer under Wallace, Lee Gronkiewicz, made an appearance at the big league level in 2007 Also during the Wallace era, players have signed

Williams has also assisted in youth baseball camps at SMC dur-ing the summer and has been giving private pitching lessons.

As a Pioneer, Williams threw a no-hitter in the 2003 Region X Tour-nament game 6 against the Knights of Surry Community College. That year the Pioneers played in the National tournament at Grand Junc-tion, Colorado.

Before coming to SMC, Williams played four years for the Lancaster High School Baseball Team. Wil-liams is the son of Steve Williams, Baseball Coach at Lancaster High School, and Jan Williams.

letters of intent with or gone to play at major NCAA Division I institutions such as South Carolina, Clemson, Tennessee, Kentucky, North Caro-lina State, College of Charleston, Coastal Carolina and East Carolina (just to name a few). Numerous oth-ers continued their careers at the NCAA Division II level.

Prior to his coaching career, Wal-lace was a standout player himself. A former second round pick of the St. Louis Cardinals, he played pro-fessionally for seven years. This included a two-year stint in Italy, where he led the league in hitting and homeruns. While playing in the States, Wallace was named an All-Star for both the Appalachian and Florida State leagues and also was team MVP for the 1983 St. Pe-tersburg Cardinals. This continued a streak of team MVP awards that

included two Lancaster High School, one Post 31 American Legion, one Baptist College and two Wofford College seasons. It was at Wofford where Wallace attracted profession-al scouts. During his two seasons there he posted records for career batting average (.456) and longest consecutive game hitting streak (37). He also led NAIA District 6 and the state of South Carolina in hitting as a sophomore. For his efforts, Wallace was inducted into Wofford’s Hall of Fame in 2000.

Wallace returned to Wofford after his playing career and completed his B.A. in Sociology. He then earned an M.A. in Physical Educa-tion from Gardner-Webb University. He and his wife of twenty-six years, Beth, have three children- Jacob,22 (member of Francis Marion squad); Amy Kate,20; and Mary Grace 18.

CORY PETERSCory Peters is in his second year

as an athletic trainer at Spartanburg Methodist College.

Peters, 32, received his under-graduate degree in Athletic Training and Sports Medicine from Mercy-hurst College and has a Master’s in Exercise and Sports Science from Ithaca College.

He worked with the football and lacrosse programs at Cornell Uni-versity for two years while attending Ithaca College. Peters worked for seven years with Clemson Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation – with four years spent at D.W. Daniel High School and other surround-ing schools as an outreach athletic trainer and three years as a clinical athletic trainer.

He holds national and state licen-sure in Athletic Training.

Peters is an avid athlete and en-joys golf, wakeboarding, and snow-boarding. He attributes his interest in sports medicine to his love of sports as a youth.

“When I saw people running out onto the fields to help the athletes, I decided that’s what I want to do. It’s a hybrid of both sports and medicine – and I knew I would enjoy it,” says Peters.

Peters, an Upstate New York na-tive, currently lives in Spartanburg.

KELLY BILBREY

Athletic TrainerKelly Bilbrey is in her second year

as an athletic trainer at Spartanburg Methodist College. Bilbrey, 23, is a 2008 graduate of Georgia Southern University with a degree in Sports Medicine.

She spent three years working in athletic training at Georgia Southern – including working with the soccer and softball teams for one year, an-other year with the basketball teams,

and one year working with local high schools.

She holds national and state li-censure in Athletic Training.

“I played a lot of sports when I was little. I was always interested in medicine also,” says Bilbrey.

In her spare time, she enjoys re-laxing on the lake, spending time with family and friends, and playing with her dog Baila.

A key component of athletic performance is sports medi-cine. The training staff and facilities at SMC offer student athletes a variety of resources for keeping fit and maximizing their performance.

The athletic training office at Spartanburg Methodist College is staffed by two cer-tified athletic trainers whose services are provided to the college through Spartanburg Regional Sports Medicine.
