Rider Indoor Golf Facility

In April of 2003, Rider University opened its new indoor golf practice facility on its campus in Lawrenceville, N.J. At that time the facility was the only one of its kind located at an institution with a Division I men’s golf program on the East Coast. The indoor practice facility, located in the Maurer Ath-letic Center, includes a 1,200-square-foot SofTrak Synthet-ic Putting Green and nine-hole putting area; two elevated holes; a 580-square foot chipping fringe; four hitting sta-

tions; a driving net and driving mats; and a videotape analy-sis center. The facility was built by SofTrak dealer Mike O’Brien of Feasterville, Pa., in conjunction with Rider Associate Ath-letic Director emeritus and former Head Golf Coach Chet Dalgewicz and through the generous contributions of Ralph and Kathy Anderson and John and Ei-leen Winokur. Rider competes in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).

The Gary Player-designed Olde York Country Club has beenhome of the Broncs since the 2000 season.Olde York has been ranked by Golf Digest as one of the best in

New Jersey for the past 13 years.Blending natural elements and traditional design standards with state-of-the-art tech-nology, the Links have been created with the golfers’ utmost pleasure in mind. The 71 par course spans 6,903 yards in Chesterfield, New Jersey. This expanse of undu-lating grasslands and thickly wooded slopes had served from the mid-18th century to themid-20th century as a dairy farm. In the 1950s it was converted into the ArrowbrookCountry Club, with an 18-hole course. Arrowbrook closed in the early Seventies, follow-ing which the property functioned for the next 20 years as the Dream-Mare Stud Farm. The Gary Player Design Company was commissioned to lay out the course and “To preserve the natural environment.”Olde York is a course of extraordinary aesthetic charm, with an overall elevation change of 90 feet. Each hole is routed separately through thetrees. There are no houses, no roads and no distractions of any kind. As at Glenmaura, it is a case of the golfer and nature.

Bob Whartenby of Lawrenceville was named the new head coach of the Rider University golf team in the fall of2006. In just his second competition as head coach, Whartenby led the Broncs to the Bucknell Invitation titleand came back two weeks later to lead Rider to victory at the Cornell Invitational. In the spring of 2007,Whartenby helped then junior Tyler Brewington to a third place finish at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conferencechampionship in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. In the fall of 2007, the golf team placed third at the Bucknell Invi-tational, fourth at the Colgate Invitational and fifth at St. Bonaventure’s Leo Keenan Invitational and in the springof 2008, Whartenby led the squad to its best ever runner-up finish at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conferencechampionships with Brewington also finishing second and rookie Brian Accorsini placing seventh.

Whartenby is a 2004 Rider graduate, where he was a three-time All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference golferfor the Broncs, and is thought of by many as the finest golfer in the modern era of the sport at Rider. “BobWhartenby has done a great job as Rider’s golf coach,” said Director of Athletics Don Harnum. “He obviouslyknows the game and is very well connected in local and regional golf circles.”

Whartenby replaced 2006 MAAC Golf Coach of the Year Chet Dalgewicz, who retired after 12 years as Rider’sgolf coach and associate director of athletics for compliance and academic support.

Whartenby served two years as an assistant coach under Dalgewicz.

“I know that as a former Rider golfer he has a tremendous amount of pride in the Rider golf program,” said Harnum.

A three-time team captain, Whartenby was the recipient of the Ed Eget Scholarship for outstanding achievement in both academics and ath-letics, and served as vice president for Rider’s Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC).

As a senior, Whartenby led Rider to a best-ever ranking of 10th in the Mid-Atlantic Region in the fall of 2003, and in the spring of 2004 ledRider to a fifth place finish in the MAAC Championship when he placed fifth overall among the 45 golfers.
