The success of land trusts in Washington and across the country is undeniable. In Washington State alone, land trusts have conserved a quarter million acres of threatened wildlife habitat and productive family farms and timberlands. Each year Washington land trusts raise forty million dollars to acquire strategic wild lands and help families stay on their land. But if I had to identify one characteristic that makes land trusts so unique, it is that we recognize and reward actions that are positive. It seems that polarization, distrust and fear pervade nearly every aspect of our society. We are often unable to see eye to eye on the most fundamental challenges we face, let alone agree on complex issues such as land use, habitat preservation or environmental health. The problem with this approach is that it fails to acknowledge that we all share responsibility for the challenges we face, particularly when it comes to a healthy environment. This is exactly why the vision and approach of Capitol Land Trust provides a unique model for success. We work with a diversity of partners and always seek common ground and shared goals. Compromise is the norm, not the exception. Put simply, we recognize and reward what people are doing right. Above all, we raise awareness of how essential landowners, elected officials, business leaders, builders, farmers, loggers, environmen- talists, educators, and others are to our conservation work. Because we all share responsibility for the precarious condition of our natural environment, we all should share the responsibility, and the opportunity, to make it better. This past year, Capitol Land Trust conserved nearly 1,000 acres of essential natural areas, priority wildlife habitat and productive working lands in four counties. We conserved 536 acres of pristine wetland and riparian habitat along Decker Creek in Mason and Grays Harbor Counties. We acquired another 1¼ miles of forested marine shoreline and salt marsh habitat in lower Eld Inlet. This acquisition caps 15 years of work that has permanently conserved six miles of marine shorelines in Eld Inlet alone. We also acquired prime habitat for multiple salmonid species along the Cowlitz River. Finally, we conserved one of the largest wetland systems in Thurston County by purchasing two sites south of Maytown and working with state agencies and the legislature to conserve an additional 240-acre site nearby. This work adds to already conserved areas within the wetland complex, creating a 475-acre contiguous block of freshwater wetland habitat. Above all, we raise awareness of how essential landowners, elected officials, business leaders, builders, farmers, loggers, environmen-talists, educators, and others are to our conservation work. All of these projects shared one important aspect: consistency with Capitol Land Trust’s five-year strategic plan. A recent review of every project ever completed by Capitol Land Trust since 1989 found that 98% of projects completed were consistent with the organization’s strategic conservation goals. This consistency with strategic goals demonstrates our commitment to operate strategically and efficiently. We work hard to accomplish the most with limited resources. For most of the past decade, an analysis of donor support compared to acres conserved each year consistently shows that for every $200 we receive in private contributions, we are able to conserve an acre of land. Capitol Land Trust’s current strategic plan also establishes fundraising goals for both conservation projects, and organizational operation and growth. On the conservation side, we recognized that to accomplish the ambitious goals we set, we would need to raise ten million dollars in new conservation funding between December 2008 and December 2010. To put this into perspective, to reach the 25-month, ten million dollar goal, we need to raise $400,000 every month, or more than $13,000 every day. This is a lofty goal, especially given the severe recession we faced during this period. That said, with nine months to go, we have secured $7.9 million in new conservation funding and are 79% toward reaching this ambitious goal. It goes without saying, that this success is made possible by the incredible support we receive from our many project partners and from you, our generous members and supporters. We deeply appreciate the time, energy and money you devote to furthering Capitol Land Trust’s mission. Thank you for another great year! Sincerely,

Eric Erler Executive Director
