What do we do?The Classic Touring Car Racing Club runs, inconjunction with the British AutomobileRacing Club, six separate Championships orSeries. In 2009 we continue our series forClassic & Historic Touring Cars (Pre 66) andhave Championships for Post Historic TouringCars (Pre 74), Classic Group One TouringCars (Pre 83), Pre 93, Classic Thunder andBOSS (Ford saloons).

Each Series or Championship is between 6 to12 rounds at circuits throughout Britain and issplit into classes depending upon engine size.

The Post Historic and Classic Group OneChampionships run on Dunlop Formula Rtreaded race tyres and to Group Onespecification, while the Classic ThunderChampionship incorporates more highlymodified cars from Group 2, Group 5, GroupA and ModProds. Pre 93 Group N saloonsmust run Toyo Proxes R888 tyres or DunlopD84J Formula R to compete in thischampionship.

Since 2004 our Pre 66 Championship acceptscars built to FIA Appendix K specification andcars built specifically to CTCRC reglations. The Pre 66 runners can use Dunlop CR65crossply racing tyres, bringing thechampionship more into line with EuropeanHistoric Touring Car regulations.

History and BackgroundIn 1974 a group of amateur racing drivers gottogether to form a club which would promoteaffordable racing for the popular saloon carsof the fifties and early sixties.

MG, Triumph, Jaguar and other sportscars hadalways been well catered for but the AustinA35, Morris Minor etc, had been left in thecold for some time. Racing in those morerelaxed times allowed owners to "arrive anddrive", only needing a crash helmet andlicence to compete.

Times have changed somewhat since thosedays and so has the Club but the watchword inall the regulations is stability which ensuresthe return of competitors year upon year.

During the past thirty five years the Club hasevolved and expanded. It now includes fourchampionships and our traditional series forPre 66 Classic and Historic Saloons. New for2008 was the introduction of a class withinClassic Group One for competitors running toProduction BMW specifications. Also in 2008our Pre 93 Series gained Championship status. In 2009 the club took an even bigger step bycreating a series within Classic Thunder calledthe Blue Oval Saloon Series (BOSS); thisfeatures Ford Saloons from near standard tohighly modified turbocharged monsters.

Our races are divided by year of manufactureand therefore reflect the relevant period ofBritish Saloon/Touring Car racing applicableto each era. Furthermore, each Championshipor Series is sub-divided into classes dependingon engine size.

Classic & Historic Saloon Cars (Pre 1966)Based on the regulations applied to theoriginal British Saloon Car Championship, this caters for cars such as the Austin A35,Morris Minor, MG , Mk1 Jaguar, Mk2 Jaguar,

An Introduction To The CTCRC...............

Ford Falcon and Mustang, Lotus and GTCortina, Hillman Imp, Mini Cooper and manyother marques.

Since its inception, regulations have changedvery little. The major revisions revolve aroundsafety equipment although cars can now runwith alloy wheels and there is a class for carswith more modified engines.

Post Historic Touring Cars (Pre 1974)As with the national RACMSAChampionships the cars and regulationschanged throughout the years. Cars which hadraced for some time within club saloonchampionships suddenly found themselvesuncompetitive due to the advances made in theearly eighties by the manufacturers.

The Post Historic Touring Cars Championshipwas introduced to cater for cars such as theTriumph Dolomite, Ford Capri and MkIEscort, Jaguar XJ6 and XJ12, Mazda RX3,Mini 1275GT and many others.

Eligibility requires an annual production ofmore than 5000 units in a year, the same as theBritish Saloon Car Championship in the early'70s.

Classic Group One Touring Cars (Pre 1983)By the end of 1973, the FIA concluded that itsrules for Saloon Car racing were not inkeeping with the developments in carmanufacture and that a change to Group Oneregulations would encourage moremanufacturers into motorsport.

These FIA regulations form the basis of theClub's Pre 1983 Group One Touring CarsChampionship and spectators are once againable to witness battles between Alfa Romeo

GTV, Rover SD1, Capri 3.0S and 2.8i,Triumph Dolomite, RS2000, Jaguar XJS, FordEscort XR3i and Mazda RX7 etc.

A description of the action typical in thisChampionship came from Marcus Pye in anAutosport report from Thruxton. "The Caprisof Best, West and Drew achieved hithertounseen angles of dangle in their battle for thirdplace".

Pre 93 Touring CarsThis Championship is evidence of the clublooking to the future to sustain the popularityand health for future seasons.

It is based around the Group One regulationsand therefore provides a competitive secondrace for Classic Group One competitors.

This championship also allows car from thepopular one make series of the early ninetiesto take part. Look out for Rover Tomcats andVW Ventos taking on the established GroupOne Touring cars.

Classic ThunderThe period from the mid-sixties to 1982 wasthe era of modified touring cars. Major

manufacturers and independent preparationcompanies like Broadspeed, producedspecially designed body panels with extendedwheel arches which allowed the cars to befitted with wide wheels and non-standardracing engines.

The earlier cars, up to 1970, ran to Group 5regulations and it was common to see Porsche911s running as touring cars. Over the nexttwelve years to 1982 BMW, Ford, Jaguar andlater, Rover dominated this class of racing inthe European Touring Car Championship.

The Club encourages owners of these fantasticcars to use them in competition in the ClassicThunder Championship. This Championshipis also open to cars that were prepared for theClassic Touring Car Championship, which ranwithin the TOCA BTCC package. ThisChampionship now also incorporates theformer ModProds Championship and FordSaloon.

Whilst the CTCRC’s oldest series is not actuallya championship, it doesn’t mean that the racingwill be any less action packed, far from it withfull grids there’ll be plenty of tin top excitementfrom two races for the fifties and sixties cars.

Following wins at OultonPark and Silverstone RogerStanford in his Class F LotusCortina will be the man towatch but last year’s winnerTom Lailey de Ville also in aLotus will no doubt be upthere with him along withever youthful septuagenarianLes Nash. Age hasn’tdiminished Les’s speed, a facthe proved by setting the fastest lap time in bothrecent Silverstone races. Brian Stevens cannormally be found behind the wheel of a Jaguar butwill be racing his gorgeous Alan Mann colouredCortina at Lydden. After some disappointingresults in the damp at Silverstone Brian will behoping for dry weather this weekend.

Mixing it with the more powerful Lotus Cortinas onthe twisty Lydden layout will be the inseparableClass C Anglias of Nick Jones and Richard Sprigg. Both finished on the podium at Lydden last year andso far this year Jones has taken the class win atOulton whilst Sprigg took both wins at Silverstone.Julian Crossley’s Mini will also be mixing with themore powerful Fords after some promising resultsearlier this year.

Punching way above his weight (and somehowdefying physics) CTCRC competition secretaryAndy Messham will no doubt be embarrassing thefar larger engined cars in his giant killing Class E850cc Mini and hoping to add another class win tothose from Oulton and Silverstone. Adding furthervariety to the grid will be the invitational class Gcars including Andy Johnson’s rare Toyota Corona,

Ken Selfe’s Mini Marcos GT. Also in Class G willbe Tim Dodwell’s extraordinary Mini, and havingraced this car since new it’s fair to say that Timknows how to extract every last bit of performancefrom this road going car.

This year’s Post Historic championship is shaping to beone of the most unpredictable for many years with fivedifferent winners at this year’s six rounds. The seasonstarted as expected when at a damp Oulton Park DavidHoward’s powerful Jaguar XJ12 initially led, only to beusurped by reigning champion Steve Primett’s nimbleEscort on his way to take the win. At Thruxton theirbattle continued with the Jaguar narrowly winning onthis occasion.

At Silverstone Howard’s engine let go in qualifying butthat didn’t mean it was going to go Primett’s way, as he wasforced into two errors which ultimately allowed JasonChristie to take his first ever win in his Escort. For thesecond race Primett was back on form and took the winfrom a squabbling Christie and Mark Osborne (TriumphDolomite Sprint). At Snetterton, with Howard’s Jaguar stillrelegated to the workshop, Primett again failed to capitaliseon the situation and failed to finish the race with enginetrouble of his own allowing Tony Crudgington to take thewin in his Dolomite ahead of Osborne’s similar machine. In the second race a returning Brian Stevens took the winin his Jaguar XJ12 ahead of Osborne.

With so many different class C winners, Primett will havehis work out to retain his championship and will no doubthave the other Escorts and Dolomites snapping at his healsagain this weekend. James Christie in his Avenger hasbeen steadily banking points in Class D and is Primett’sclosest title contender but will have to battle the everimproving and ever sideways Phil Waller also in anAvenger for the class win at Lydden.

The 2009 Autoglym Post Historic Touring carChampionship in association with DUNLOP is organisedand administered by the British Automobile Racing ClubLtd (BARC) in accordance with the General Regulations ofthe Royal Automobile Club Motor Sports Association(incorporating the provisions of the International Sporting

Code of the FiA) and these Championship Regulations. The organisers reserve the right to issue additionalstatements clarifying items in the rules and regulations andall such statements will be issued to all registered driversby posting to the address details on the registration form.

Reigning Group One champion Jim McLoughlin has sofar dominated the 2009 season, taking four outrightwins and five class wins already. At Oulton he had tosettle for second behind David Howard’s very smokyJaguar but Jim was then able to beat the V12 machineto take the win at Thruxton. McLoughlin followed thiswith two wins at Silverstone where he finished ahead ofTim Scott Andrews’s Rover Vitesse and RichardAustin’s Capri. At Snetterton McLoughlin’s long timerival Mark Fowler returned in his Esso Capri but couldonly finish second to McLoughlin. McLoughlin wasalso on course for a second Snetterton win until he wasforced to retire when mechanical problems meant hewas shown the black and orange flag, handing the winto Brian Steven’s XJ12.

Whilst McLoughlin has been accumulating a hefty pointstally, Matt Irons in his Class C BMW323i has also beenreaping the rewards of his recent class wins and currentlylies second in the championship. It may appear that onlythese two stand any chance of taking the title but somereturning racers to the championship could end either’s runof recent class wins. At Snetterton Mark Lucock took twoClass C wins at the wheel of Tony Crudgington’s Dolomitewhilst Lydden will also see the class C return of RogerStanford in his BMW 2002 and Richard Langeveld in hisEscort RS2000. In Class B Mark Fowler and Tim ScottAndrews will both be hoping to finally find a way pastMcLoughlin’s Capri and they will be joined by a returningAdrian Fuller and Dave Margalies both in Capris.

Also racing a Capri will be 1970’s star Les Blackburn. Leswas well known for campaigning the Hermetite liveriedCapris across Europe and it’ll be great to see Les backbehind the wheel of the Hermetite car at Lydden thisweekend. Les will no doubt be keen to prove he can stillget the most out of these lairy Fords and show the youngerguys how it’s done.

This season’s Pre 93 championship continues where lastyear’s left off with some great battles between thepowerful lurid turbo-charged Sierras and Tomcats andthe howling but balanced BMWs and VWs. The seasonstarted well for the turbo cars as they took the firstvictories of the year. At Oulton Park Craig Jamiesonwon in his Sierra Cosworth with Tony Gorman’s BMWM3 not far behind. At Thruxton Tony Gorman’s M3led initially until Anthony Wright in his Rover Tomcatmuscled his way by through the fast Church corner totake the win with Mark Osborne’s Mitsubishi StarionTurbo second.

At Silverstone the wet conditions in the first race favouredRoger Stanford’s nimble E30 BMW M3 with LenSimpson’s VW Vento chasing the BMW to the line. Thesecond Silverstone race was dry and Stanford’s M3 ledthroughout with Jamieson’s Sierra finishing second havingcharged through the pack from fifth. When Jamieson’sSierra took the first win at Snetterton it looked like the longNorfolk straights had swung the advantage back to theturbo cars but Stanford’s M3 won the second race withAndrew Busby’s similar machine second.

In his Class D BMW 325i Ryan Gorman hasn’t beenfighting for overall victories but with five class wins fromsix starts he now leads the championship, with CraigJamieson close behind leading Class B and Roger Stanfordthird leading Class C. All three will need to continuewinning their class to maintain their championship hopesand all will have to beat off some stiff competition atLydden. In Class B Jamieson will not only have to fight offthe other regulars but will also face newcomers Dean Spurrand Pete Winstone in their Tomcats. In Class C Stanfordwill be joined this weekend by the spectacular Ken Lark inhis VW Corrado and in Class D Gorman will have to beatAndy Johnson in his recently completed 325i.

As inprevious years the wilder and more powerful cars haveoften been at the top of the timesheets but with these carsproving tricky to drive and prepare it’s not usual for a lessermodified car to sneak through and steal the victory.

When the season started at Oulton it looked like Neil Philpottsin his 600bhp Mitsubishi Starion would be the man to beatespecially as rival’s Joss Ronchetti’s engine wasn’t yet ready.Neil set a convincing pole time in qualifying but it was all invain when the differential gave up at the race start. PiersGrange led initially in his V8 engined Ford Sierra but the poweradvantage wasn’t enough to hold off local expert Andy Daviesin his less modified BMW M3. At Thruxton Philpotts hadlearnt from Oulton and this time was able to convert his poleinto a dominant win. Behind the mighty Mitsubishi was anincredible battle with five cars fighting for second place, allcovered by just two seconds led this time by Piers Grange.

At Silverstone Ronchetti rejoined the championship in hisTalbot Sunbeam Lotus and claimed pole whilst Philpottsstruggled with engine dramas. Whilst qualifying had been drythe first race was wet and Ronchetti was unable to match thepace of Craig Rainer’s BOSS Escort which took a comfortablewin. The dry second race was more to Ronchetti’s liking and heclaimed his first win of the year. Ronchetti took another poleand two wins at Snetterton. In both races Ronchetti had toinitially drive hard to stay ahead of Philpotts but in both racesthe Starion sadly failed.

With so many mechanical problems for the front runners thechampionship is still wide open. Helped by his Oulton winAndy Davies is currently leading in his Class B BMW whilstthe Sierra of Andy Williams and Joss Ronchetti aren’t farbehind in Class C. With such a varied grid predicting a ClassicThunder result is difficult but Ronchetti’s nimble Sunbeam isamongst the favourites here along with Philpott’s powerfulStarion and Grange’s V8 Sierra. However on such a tight layoutthe better balanced but less powerful BMWs shouldn’t bediscounted and brothers Andy and Allan Davies will do whatthey can to get their M3s to the front.

The end of 2008 saw a number of Ford Club-Racing Drivers withitchy feet. Their current championship was not working to theneeds of the racing driver with many feeling disillusioned andlooking to other racing organisations for a different challenge in2009. Word spreads quickly around the paddocks and it soonbecame clear that racing drivers were not alone in their thoughts. To driver, Craig Rainer, it became apparently that with thenumber of drivers looking to move there was the potential for anew series. Enlisting the help of Chris Beeney, who was assistingas the co-ordinator of their current series, the pair began lookingfor a way to set up a new series that would be run for the drivers,by the drivers. The idea was taken to the Classic Touring CarRacing Club (CTCRC) who quickly saw the potential andoffered to work with them to create the Blue Oval Saloon Series– BOSS. The Series would be dedicated to giving like mindedpeople friendly club-level racing on a budget, but at the sametime providing fantastic racing for drivers and spectators alike.

Working alongside the CTCRC it was decided that the BOSS wouldbe incorporated into the Impressions Classic Thunder Saloons untilsuch time that the numbers would grant stand alone races. With thecreation of the website www.blueovalsaloons.com and through wordof mouth membership numbers speedily exceeded expectations.

The inaugural race was seen at Oulton Park on the 28th March anddespite the cold, wet and windy weather a total of 13 drivers tookpart. This was a very encouraging number and a relief to all those, who over the winter, had put so much time and effort into getting theBOSS this far. Out of the 13 who started the race only 5 finishedwith 3 of them making it into the top 10 overall. So, although somedrivers did not enjoy the success they would have hoped for in theirfirst run of the year all agreed that the event was well run, friendlyand working towards their needs.

Round 2 took place over the Easter weekend at Thruxton. A newcircuit to most, if not all, of the drivers and there is a lot of truth inthe rumours that this is a fast circuit. The BOSS saw 10 competitorsthis time with 5 bringing their cars to the chequered flag. Again, allwere impressed with the dedication of those running the event, andtheir efforts in getting everybody out on the circuit. The feeling of aseries run for the drivers was really beginning to shine through.

The first double header of the year was seen at Silverstone in midMay. The increasing popularity of the BOSS coupled with one of themost well known circuits in the country saw an amazing grid of 16BOSS cars in total. The British weather paid a big part in theweekend with a dry track for qualifying on the Saturday, followed by

standing water and torrential rain for the first race on the Sunday. Theweather conditions for this race saw BOSS competitor Craig Rainerwin the race overall some 28secs in front of 2nd place held by ClassicThunder driver Andy Williams. In total 15 drivers finished this race, which given the conditions, emphasised the high standard of drivingwithin BOSS. To the relief of the spectators and most of the driversthe second race of the afternoon was on a dry track with 14 carscoming home to the chequered flag.

From the deluge at Silverstone came the heatwave at Snetterton inmid June. Another double header and again an encouraging numberof BOSS competitors out on the track, 12 in total which includedsome new faces. BOSS saw 9 drivers finish in the Saturday race and10 finish in the Sunday race. It also became clear the intention tohave a Series that is dedicated to the drivers was coming together. Anincident between BOSS competitors Craig Rainer and Steven Hornersaw both finish the race but with damage. Pure enthusiasm and helpfrom drivers and supporters of other teams meant both were able toget back out on the Sunday to race.

And so we are half way through the 2009 calendar and here atLydden Hill for the CTCRC Autoglym Classic Festival. Fingers arecrossed for some good weather and hopes are running high foranother successful weekend for the BOSS, proving that the seriesreally is going from strength to strength.

Points will be awarded to Competitors listed as classified finishers inthe Final Results subject to 3 starters in class as follows:- Classwinner: 20 points; 2nd: 17 points: 3rd : 15 points: 4th : 13 points ,then pro-rata down to 1 point. 2 additional points will be awarded forpole in each class. 2 additional points will be awarded for fastest lapin each class with a further point awarded for a lap record. There are a multitude of different formulae tochoose from when the decision has been made togo racing, but for the enthusiast looking forcircuit racing excitement you should look nofurther than the CTCRC. We cater for all cars, from Hillman Imps, to a Chevrolet Camaro, andfrom VW Golf Gti’s and XR3i’s to V12 Jaguarsin our championships which range from Pre 66to Pre 93 saloon cars, plus the highly modifiedClassic Thunder cars and the Ford based BOSSseries.

But first there's still some racing formalities tocomplete:...............

Initial Preparation:Get a starter Pack and Application Form from theMotor Sports Association (01753 681736). Formost forms of motorsport you have to be over 17years of age and hold a road traffic driving licenseor be 16 years old with at least one year'sexperience in Karting.

Arrange with your Doctor to have the medicalchecks required by the application form.

After a careful study of the pack, go for your half-day introduction course at one of the approvedCircuit schools, which concludes with theaptitude/safety test which you need to pass in orderto apply for your novices license. This includes awritten test. It will have cost you at least £300 to getthis far.

Finding a Series:For 2009 the CTCRC are running 4 championshipsand 1 series for saloon cars from four periods, Pre1966, Pre 1974, Pre 1983, Pre 1993 and the ClassicThunder/BOSS Championship.

Each has approximately 11 Championship roundsheld at all the top circuits every season.

All the championships benefit from the usualCTCRC advantages:

Wide range of eligible road cars at affordableprices.Sensible technical regulations ensure a reasonablelevel of competitiveness and need not cost the earthwhen preparing a car.

Our cars don't become obsolete. You can developyour car over a number of years, confident that nonew model is suddenly going to blow it away. Our cars don't depreciate - unless you hitsomething!

To proceed contact our Membership Secretary on0870 321 2277 and join the club. Return yourregistration forms to us and we will return yourchampionship and club registration card. Don’tforget to fill in and return the back page from thetechnical regulations to the BARC – they will thensend you your race entry forms.

Finding a car:Your choices at this stage are twofold – you caneither prepare a road car from scratch, or purchasea ready prepared race car, three great examples onpage 30. There are many advantages to the latter, and the club web site atwww.classictouringcars.com and The Flyer, thequarterly club magazine, have details of race carsoffered for sale by members. If you buy a readyprepared and raced car not only will you not have toput so much time into the car, but you also don’t

need to spend a penny on it until you can match theprevious owners lap times! If you buy a car fromoutside the club, try and buy the car from Parc

Ferme at it’s last outing – it is not unknown forunscrupulous owners to unbolt the ‘trick’components when offering a car for sale. Alsoensure you take a knowledgeable expert with you, someone who can tell if that rose joint is past it’sbest or not.

If you feel you are experienced enough and chooseto prepare your own car, the blue book and theseries technical regulations can guide you with do’sand don’ts. These will include the addition oflaminated windscreens, rollcages, onboard fireextinguisher, racing seat installation and externalignition cut-out.

The Driver:The driver will require an MSA approved racingsuit, helmet, gloves, boots, socks, underwear andbalaclava. It is wise to buy the best you can affordwith these items. Remember each layer will giveyou around 5 seconds if the worst happens and thereis a fire – a 3 layer nomex FIA suit will give you 15,plus 5 for underwear so don’t skimp. A baggy suitwill insulate you more effectively too. Ensure yourhelmet is of as good a quality as you can afford –you only have one head after all!

As a guide, good overalls can be purchased foraround £300, and a helmet for £250. Ensure theycarry the correct labels for MSA approval prior topurchase.

The checking of the driver's racewear will occur insafety scrutineering on race day so remember totake them with you. If your helmet is unused, take apound coin and if the scrutineer approves yourhelmet after a check for knocks and scrapes, he willswap your pound for a sticker to go on your helmet. This sticker is then checked as you form on the gridto ensure all drivers are wearing the correcthelmets.

Race Costs:Once you’ve acquired your race licence, your carand you’ve registered for the championships you’reready to race!

Each race entry will cost you roughly £170 and willinclude qualifying and a race. Over and above thatyou’ll have the costs of preparing your car whichwill vary greatly according to the type of car andstate of tune.

Check out the cars competing in any of theCTCRC's events and you'll see that all of ourChampionships offer the chance to produce a racerwhich looks, and goes well, at a reasonable price. There are a host of categories and Championshipsbeckoning the new entrant, but we think ourformula works very well for the club racer andenthusiast. Those who’ve tried it over the yearsseem to agree, because many of them have beenwith the club for many years.

Once you've completed those first ten laps though, you'll be on cloud nine, for a week at least!

I look forward to seeing you out there, have a greatday.
