Jonathan Willcocks - Magnificat

Jonathan Willcocks w as born in Worcester, England in 1953, sonof Sir David Willcocks. Follow ing early musical training as a boychorister at King's College, Cambr idge and an Open MusicScholar at Clif ton College, he took an Honours degree in Musicfrom Cambr idge University w here he held a choral scholarship atTrinity College.

As a conductor, Jonathan is musical director of tw o large adultchoruses - Portsmouth Choral Union and the Chichester Singers -and of the professional chamber orchestra Southern Pro Musica.He w orks extensively as a guest conductor of both choral andorchestral mus ic, a career that has taken him in recent years toFrance, Belgium, Germany, Holland, Italy, Sw itzerland, Spain,Canada, South Africa, Australia and Singapore, in addition toengagements throughout the length and breadth of the USA andUK.

As a composer, Jonathan's music is published by OxfordUniversity Press and the Lorenz group of companies and byPr ime Music. His published music inc ludes major choral w orks,works for children's choir, many shorter choral pieces (including anthems and secular choral music) andinstrumental w orks. There have also been a number of recordings of his music, w ith plans for furtherdiscs in the near future.

Sir David Willcocks - Carol arranger (Carols for Choirs jointly with John Rutter)

Born New quay in Cornw all, Sir David Willcocksbegan his musical training as a chorister atWestminster Abbey from 1929 to 1934. From1934 to 1938, he w as a music scholar at Clif tonCollege, Bristol, before his appointment as organscholar at King's College, Cambr idge.

In 1947 w as elected a Fellow of King's Collegeand appointed Conductor of the Cambr idgePhilharmonic Society. In the same year, hebecame the organist at Salisbury Cathedral andthe conductor of the Salisbury Musical Society. Hemoved to Worcester Cathedral in 1950 andremained until 1957, during w hich time he w asorganist of the Cathedral, principal conductor ofthe Three Choirs Festival in 1951, 1954, and1957, and conductor of the City of BirminghamChoir. From 1956 to 1974 he w as also conductorof the Bradford Festival Choral Society, w hilst

continuing as guest conductor for their carol concerts into the early 1990s.

From 1957 to 1974 he held the post for w hich he is probably best know n, Director of Music at King'sCollege, Cambridge. In addition, he served as the organist of Cambridge University, conductor of theCambridge University Musical Society, and as University Lecturer. He made numerous recordings w iththe college choir; the choir toured extensively, giving concerts w orldw ide, as w ell as garnering furtheracclaim internationally through television and radio appearances.

He held these posit ions at Cambr idge until the 1970s w hen he accepted the post of director of the RoyalCollege of Music. In the 1971 Queen's Birthday Honours, he w as appointed a Commander of the Order ofthe British Empire (CBE), and w as created a Knight Bachelor in 1977 in the Queen's Silver JubileeHonours. He is President of the City of Bath Bach Choir.

Barclays House Choir

Barclays House Choir, originallynamed Barclays House Sports andSocial Club Musical Society, wasfounded following the completion of thenew Head Office of BarclaysInternational in Poole, Dorset. The firstrehearsal was held on 5 October 1976,when ten singers met to rehearse for aplanned Christmas Concert. Numbersgrew and 21 finally took part in theconcert held in Barclays House. Sincethat time membership has widened andnow consists of about 70 membersdrawn from many occupations.

Under the musical direction of James(Jim) Grocott, who has led the choir forthe last 32 years, the group hasperformed many of the major choralworks including Handel's Messiah,Haydn's Creation, Vivaldi's Gloria andBrahms's Requiem, as well as moremodern compositions such as Rutter'sMagnificat, Gloria and Requiem.

Most of the choir's concerts alsoinvolve the 30 strong St Peter'sOrchestra, whose support is alwaysvery much appreciated. The choirreceives the financial support of theBarclays Bank Arts Council, and allconcerts are given with their support.
