Coming off a program-best 30-win campaign a year ago, the 2009 East Tennessee State softball team will look to build off that success and claim its first-ever Atlantic Sun Championship in May.

Last season ETSU used the small-ball philosophy to its advantage, as the team set new school records with 95 stolen bases and 61 sacrifice hits, but also the strong arm of Marissa Hardy (Rocklin, Calif.) helped post a solid Lady Buccaneer pitching staff. Hardy – who was the ace of ETSU’s staff – set five individual records, while the team broke the single-season strikeout record with 353 punch outs.

“Last season was bittersweet,” commented head coach Andrea Mangrum, who enters her fourth season with the Lady Bucs. “I was proud of the team for all the hard work they put in and to set the single-season wins record was rewarding. However, we feel like there is some unfinished business to take care of this season after falling one game short of the Atlantic Sun Championship game.”

The 2009 softball season not only brings new faces and energy to the game, but also a new home for the Lady Bucs. After playing its first eight seasons on city-owned fields, ETSU moves into its brand-new 500-seat stadium in 2009.

The 11 letterwinners from last year’s record-breaking squad and eight new faces Mangrum brought in will all be expected to produce both on the field and in the classroom.

One of those eight new faces includes new assistant Sarah Totten – who will help the Lady Bucs with their hitting and fielding. Two of the Lady Bucs’ 11 letterwinners include Katy Jett (Talbott, Tenn.) – who was ETSU’s leading offensive component – and Hardy. Jett led the Lady Bucs in all but four offensive categories in 2008, while Hardy broke five ETSU pitching records.

With a lot of talent returning, new energy from the eight newcomers and a place to finally call home, the 2009 Lady Buccaneer softball team looks to reach new heights this spring.

LAdy BUCCAnEEr inFiELd The ETSU infield features both a lot of experience and talent, while also mixing in some youth as well. At the corners, senior slugger Jessie Hackworth (Clinton, Tenn.) made the move from third to first in the offseason and has adjusted nicely to the change. Hackworth played in 62 of the 63 games a year ago and started primarily all 62 games at third. The Clinton, Tenn., native had a strong finish to the season, as she received Atlantic Sun All-Tournament Team honors after posting an astonishing .500 batting averaging (6-for-12) with a home run and four RBIs. Overall, Hackworth was second on the team with her .299 average (47-157) and 31 RBIs.

“Jessie has adjusted nicely to her new position at first,” added Mangrum. “Coach Totten has helped make that move a lot easier for her, and I see Jessie having a breakout year after finishing the season strong in 2008.”

Looking to fill Hackworth’s gap at third will be freshman Amy Campbell (Hixson, Tenn.) and sophomore Katie Henderson (Jackson, Tenn.). Henderson spent most of her time either behind the plate or being the Lady Buccaneer designated player as a freshman, but also saw limited action at third and short. Campbell is a well-rounded athlete and came out of one the most prestigious schools in the state – Girls Preparatory School. The Hixson, Tenn., native led the Bruisers to a 2007 State Championship and her toughness also showed as she won the 2007 USA Girls Wrestling State Championship as well.

Up the middle, junior Cheniece Cason (Moreno Valley, Calif.) will be the starting shortstop for ETSU, while freshman Chelsea O’Connor (Knoxville, Tenn.) and junior Katy Jett (Talbott, Tenn.) will each spend time at second. Jett – who played 17 games at second last season – will also see significant starts in the outfield. Like Jett, Cason can also help the

Lady Bucs in the outfield, while O’Connor would move to short when the junior speedster is covering the ground in either center or left. The speed of Jett and Cason helped ETSU out a year ago, as the junior duo combined for 33 stolen bases and were only caught twice. Cason was a perfect 14-of-14 in the department, while Jett finished 19-for-21.

“We bring back a lot of experience with our infielders, but we are also relying on some of our freshmen to step in right away and contribute,” added Mangrum. “Cheniece worked hard this summer and showed us in the fall that she should be the starting shortstop. Chelsea and Katy will split time at second, but Chelsea is more of a natural middle infielder. Katy has given us a boost wherever we plug her in and can also be an asset in the outfield.”

LAdy BUCCAnEEr OUTFiELdOnce again ETSU’s outfield will consist of solid defense and blazing speed. The Lady Bucs return all three starters from last season, with senior Kate Powell (Johnson City) covering ground in left, (Katy) Jett in center and Vicki McCoy (Ringgold, Ga.) in right. All three players also have strong and accurate arms, with Jett showing the most range.

Jett and McCoy split time in center and right, while Powell started 44 games in left and 15 in center. Jett made 22 starts in center (25 in right), and 26 of McCoy’s 55 starts came in center.

McCoy led the club with 21 stolen bases, which ranks third on the ETSU single-season list, and the Ringgold, Ga., native also led the team in hitting during the 22 conference games. McCoy posted a team-high .353 batting average (18-51) in A-Sun play and she also tied Hackworth for the longest hitting streak of the year at 10 games.

Jett, who posted the most multiple hit (19) and RBI (9) games last season, compiled the Lady Bucs’ best fielding percentage as well (.990). The junior Preseason All-Conference selection recorded 18 assists and committed only one error in 96 total chances.

Powell, who also takes great pride in her defense, was one of four Lady Buccaneer players to post 10+ stolen bases. The senior stole 13 bases and led the team with 10 sacrifice hits.

Fellow senior Cat Zyskowski (Grand Rapids, Mich.) is currently rehabbing from shoulder surgery and hopes to join the team midway through the season. The Lady Bucs hope to have her return, as not only does she give the team more depth in the outfield, but also has some pop in her bat at the plate.

Joining these returners will be freshman Annie Martin (Centerville, Tenn.). Since joining the team in August, Martin has continued to improve all aspects of her game and has been very coachable, according to Mangrum. During her first three seasons at Hickman County High School, Martin mounted a .428 batting average (89-208) with three home runs and 49 RBIs. In addition to being a four-year letterwinner for the Bulldogs, Martin also won numerous awards during her playing days, as she was named District 11AAA Defensive MVP in 2006 and 2007.

“Our outfield play is one of our strengths as we head into our season-opener,” said Mangrum. “We have a lot of depth, experience and speed at all three positions and everyone has been looking strong in preseason workouts.”

LAdy BUCCAnEEr PiTChErS And CATChErSWith Marissa Hardy (Rocklin, Calif.) coming off a break-through season in the circle, the junior right-hander looks to be the ace of the staff. Meanwhile, with Hardy pitching, junior Trisha Massenzo (Russellville, Tenn.) looks to be her number one battery mate. Massenzo started all 63 games a year ago (with 46 of them coming behind the dish), and her strong and reliable arm always has the opposition on guard when it comes to their running game. The Russellville, Tenn., native also has a potent bat, as Massenzo led the team in home runs (7) and doubles (12), ranked second in runs scored (30) and tied for third in hits (47).

The addition of pitching coach Ariel Beus paid huge dividends in year one as Hardy broke five ETSU pitching records – including the single-game strikeout mark with 16 Ks vs. Presbyterian. The reliable right-hander also set new Lady Buccaneer records in wins (19), IP (229.1), appearances (41) and strikeouts (261). Also, as a team, ETSU broke the single-season strikeout record with 353.

“Coach Beus really had a positive influence on our pitchers and catchers last season,” added Mangrum. “Once again we expect big things out of Marissa, and Trisha has consistently gotten stronger behind the plate.”

Joining Hardy in the rotation will be junior Darci Gilbert (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), sophomore Ashley Boyd (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and freshman Shelby Morris (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.).

Both Gilbert and Boyd each made 24 appearances a year ago, but after struggling in the circle as a sophomore, Gilbert has looked a lot stronger during the fall and winter practices. Gilbert, who tied the team lead with 10 wins as a freshman, has been battling Hardy for the top spot in the rotation this season.

With a year under her belt, Boyd looks to build off her 7-win season and give the Lady Bucs some valuable innings as a sophomore. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native tossed 109.0 innings as a rookie and posted two shutouts.

“Darci is coming off a strong fall season and that helped build her confidence back up,” added Mangrum. “Right now she and Marissa are the only upperclassman and both have been battling neck-and-neck for the number one slot.”

“Ashley was injured this fall, but she laid a solid foundation as freshman and we expect her to have a strong sophomore year,” said Mangrum.

Shelby Morris was the lone pitcher in this signing class and was a four-year letterwinner in both softball and volleyball at Mt. Juliet High School. In her first three seasons with the Bears, Morris posted an impressive record of 51-13 in the circle, and helped guide her team to back-to-back appearances in the state championship.

“Shelby had a stellar high school career and we hope those successes and confidence carry over to the collegiate level,” added Mangrum.

Joining Massenzo behind the dish will be (Katie) Henderson and freshman Marlina Delisa (Tucson, Ariz.). Henderson made 17 starts as a catcher during her rookie year and is one of many Lady Buccaneer players that had a great fall season.

Delisa also had a solid fall and if her bat continues to remain hot, she can spend time either catching or filling the designated player slot. The Tucson, Ariz., native comes from a softball hotbed, as she was a multi-sport athlete at Marana High School. Delisa hit .412 her junior season as well as posting a perfect fielding percentage, and hit a team-leading .391 in 2008. In 2007, she was named Second Team All-Southern Arizona from the Arizona Daily Star and Tucson Citizen and Honorable Mention from the Arizona Republic.

“Marlina and Katie are strong players and can help us many ways,” commented Mangrum. “Both of them are sound behind the plate and can also help us with their bat. If they are not catching or playing elsewhere, both can be used at the designated player slot.”

LAdy BUCCAnEEr SChEUdLE Following a season-opening trip to South Carolina for the College of Charleston Tournament (Feb. 13-15), the Lady Buccaneers will finally open the gates to their new stadium when the Furman Paladins come calling on Feb. 18. Then, ETSU will host Milligan on Feb. 21.

“Typically we are on the road until mid-March, but with the new stadium we thought it would give us some momentum early on to play a few home games in February,” said Mangrum.

At the conclusion of a brief four-game homestand, ETSU hits the road for nearly a three-week stretch where it plays in two tournaments and a pair of road series in South Carolina. The Lady Bucs begin the road trip in Chattanooga, where they take on Boston College, Toledo, Morehead State, Rhode Island and Princeton at the UTC Tournament (Feb. 27-March 1). From there, the Lady Bucs play road series at Coastal Carolina (March 7) and Charleston Southern (March 9); before heading down to Clearwater, Fla. to compete in the prestigious Under Armour Invitational. While in Florida the Lady Bucs will be guaranteed three games, beginning with Michigan State on March 13.

After a 20-day hiatus from Johnson City, the Lady Buccaneers finally return home for their conference opener. ETSU opens Atlantic Sun play against North Florida on March 18. The Lady Bucs remain home for a critical series with 2008 A-Sun Tournament Champion, Campbell (March 21), and close out the season-long, six-game homestand with co-regular season champion USC Upstate on March 22.

The schedule does not get any easier for the Lady Bucs as they hit the road for a conference swing, starting at Stetson on March 26. ETSU wraps up the short stint in the Sunshine State, when it takes on 2008 regular season conference champion, Florida Gulf Coast, the following day.

ETSU closes out the month of March with a bang, as 2008 Women’s College World Series participant, Virginia Tech, visits Johnson City for a single game under the lights on March 31 at 5 p.m.

“The home game against Virginia Tech will be our premier game this season,” commented Mangrum. “It will be an exciting game for our community to come out and watch in our new stadium. The Hokies were the only collegiate team to beat Team USA last year on the Bound for Beijing Tour, and they made their first appearance in the Women’s College World Series as well. Also, Tech’s head coach, Scot Thomas, is an ETSU alum, so it will be a homecoming for him as well.”

The Lady Bucs remain out of conference to begin the month of April, as they host former SoCon rival Appalachian State on April 1, and close out the home series against North Carolina Central on April 4.

Following a road trip to Longwood, ETSU returns home for a critical conference battle with Lipscomb (April 10) and Belmont (April 11). Since joining the A-Sun, the Lady Bucs have won 12 of the 13 meetings between the two schools from the Music City.

Other notable games include a home match-up versus conference foe Jacksonville (April 18), and road games at Mercer (April 24) and Kennesaw State (April 25).

Once again the Atlantic Sun Conference champion will be crowned at Stetson’s Patricia Wilson Field. The double-elimination tournament begins on May 7, and the championship game will be played on May 9. The top six teams eligible for postseason play make the trip to DeLand, Fla.

A-SUn BrEAkdOWn For the second straight season, junior Katy Jett received Preseason All-Conference accolades, while the Lady Bucs were pegged ninth in the coaches’ poll. After earning a share of the 2008 regular season title, USC Upstate was voted number one. The Spartans received six first place votes and edged out Florida Gulf Coast – another team who earned a share of the regular season title – by five votes. The Spartans finished with 112 tallies, while the Eagles – who received four first place votes – ended with 107. Stetson finished out the top three teams and the Hatters were also pegged as the favorites to win the tournament championship as well.

Campbell, last season’s tournament champion, was picked sixth (64 votes); while Kennesaw State (77 votes), Lipscomb (75 votes) and Mercer (66 votes) are all expected to finish higher. Mercer was the other team to receive a first place selection. Meanwhile, UNF was selected seventh right above the Lady Bucs with 53 votes.

The 2009 season will mark head coach Andrea Mangrum’s fourth season at the helm of the ETSU Lady Buccaneer softball program.

Since Mangrum took over the reins in 2006, she has made strides in increasing the win total for those first three seasons – including a program-best 30-win campaign in 2008. Now, in 2009, Mangrum looks to guide the Lady Bucs to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance as she surpasses win No. 100 at ETSU. In addition to the winningest season in ETSU history a year ago, Mangrum also reached the 100-win milestone with the Lady Bucs’ 5-2 win over Howard back on Feb. 29, 2008.

Last season Mangrum’s team was one game away from reaching the 2008 Atlantic Sun Championship game as a number four seed. Mangrum’s small-ball philosophy paid off last year, as the Lady Bucs set school records with 95 stolen bases and 61 sacrifice hits. Meanwhile, the ETSU pitching staff also stepped up in a big way thanks to the strong arm of Marissa Hardy. Hardy and the Lady Buccaneer pitchers set a season record with 353 strikeouts and Hardy also set five individual marks as well. Hardy also joined teammates Katy Jett and Jessie Hackworth as 2008 Atlantic Sun All-Tournament Team members.

In 2007, Mangrum’s club boasted the best offensive season in program history en route to earning the third seed in the Atlantic Sun Tournament, which marked the best slot in Lady Buccaneer history.

As a team, Mangrum’s club set school records in batting average (.280), runs (247), RBIs (213), slugging percentage (.401), on-base percentage (.340), and sacrifice hits (54). The Lady Buc bats were also on fire during their 18 conference games. ETSU led the A-Sun in every offensive statistical category in 2007.

After opening the 2007 season with a demanding 17-game road swing, which included games against top-ranked programs at South Florida, Washington, Wisconsin and Hofstra, Mangrum’s crew finally enjoyed play at home and in conference. ETSU stormed out of the gates in A-Sun play as it won nine of its first 12 games and took over first place by sweeping Jacksonville on April 13. During the stellar play, the Lady Bucs also posted a Nashville sweep by bombing Belmont and at the time first-place Lipscomb in Johnson City. During the four-game win streak (eventually reached a season-high six after JU), ETSU set new school records by posting 48 runs and 47 hits. The explosive offense led to Stephanie Gaynord being named ETSU’s first conference Player of the Week winner in ’07. Teammate Marissa Hardy became the second winner after earning both wins over the Dolphins and followed that up by tossing the program’s first-ever no-hitter the very next day (after receiving the honor). In total, Mangrum coached four Lady Buccaneer players to conference awards, including Stephanie Gaynord and Amanda Haverman to First Team All-Atlantic Sun honors, and Cheniece Cason and Katy Jett to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team. Gaynord was also voted to the Atlantic Sun All-Tournament Team; while Jett was named Atlantic Sun All-Second Team as well.

In her initial year, Mangrum’s club closed out the 2006 campaign on a hot streak, winning seven of its last eight regular season games to earn the fifth seed in the conference tournament. At the A-Sun Tournament Mangrum had the Lady Bucs playing solid ball, as they knocked off fourth-seed Campbell and finished one win away from reaching the championship game. Mangrum’s squad was also the only team in the conference to sweep Stetson, the best team in the league. Mangrum helped coach Mary Catherine Vercoe, Stephanie Gaynord and Jessica Lonsinger to A-Sun accolades. Vercoe was named to the A-Sun All-Freshman Team, while Gaynord and Lonsinger were named to the conference All-Tournament Team.

Even though coach Mangrum has only three years under her belt with ETSU, she is certainly no stranger to Northeast Tennessee. Mangrum, who is originally from Kingsport, was a member of ETSU’s inaugural softball team in 2001, and returned to Johnson City after a three-year coaching stint at Belhaven College, in Jackson,

Miss., where she served as an assistant during the 2003 season and moved to the helm of the program for the next two seasons in 2004.

Mangrum began her coaching career as an assistant varsity/head junior varsity coach at Dobyns-Bennett High School in Kingsport, before moving to The Veritas School in Jackson, Miss., where she started the first fast pitch softball program in school history. Upon moving to Belhaven, Mangrum led the team to a school-record 28 wins in 2004 and proved her recruiting skills by signing 12 student-athletes within three months of taking over the program. In her two seasons at Belhaven, Mangrum posted a 48-52 record.

“I am excited to be back home and coaching,” said Mangrum. “I am really excited to be able to make an impact in the town I grew up in.”

Mangrum took over the ETSU reins from former head coach Amy Fuller who posted a 78-96 record over three seasons with the Bucs.

As a player, Mangrum started in 39 of ETSU’s 49 games in 2001, when the team posted 14 victories in its first season of competition. As a middle infielder, Mangrum recorded a .924 fielding percentage with 96 putouts and 61 assists in her lone season with the Bucs. Prior to ETSU, Mangrum played at Chattanooga for two seasons.

At UTC, Mangrum played for Ralph and Karen Weekly, current head coach at the University of Tennessee. She also spent three summers playing international softball in Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Venezuela, and Austria. In the summer of 2002, Mangrum was named the hitting MVP of the Austrian National League as she batted over .600. During her senior year in high school, Mangrum was invited to play international ball in Central America on a college-level team. On each international stint, her team played the national clubs in each country they visited.

Mangrum also devotes her time to helping out with softball clinics and is very active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) as she is the Huddle Coach here at ETSU. She has also instructed at the University of Tennessee and Baylor University softball camps.

In August, Mangrum revamped her staff as she brought in Louisville graduate Sarah Totten to guide the ETSU hitters and fielders. Mangrum’s sister, Laura Roberts, will also be a volunteer assistant to the program.

“I think we have a great mix in our staff, which will be a tool for the success of our program,” said Mangrum. “I want this program to earn the respect that it deserves, and represent ETSU with character and integrity. When we do that on and off the field, we will see a lot success.”

Andrea is married to Joel Mangrum, who is the assistant baseball coach at Milligan College.

Ariel Beus enters her second season as the Lady Bucs’ pitching coach in 2009.

In her first year with the Lady Bucs, Beus brought in a winning attitude to the team, and her pitchers helped break numerous school records.

Beus’ first season was highlighted by the dominant performance of right-hander Marissa Hardy and, as a staff, the Lady Bucs broke the single season strikeout record (353). Meanwhile, Hardy broke five Lady Buccaneer pitching records – including the single game strikeout mark of 16 against Presbyterian on March 26. To add to the list, Hardy also broke the single season records in wins (19), IP (223.1), appearances (41), and strikeouts (255). Hardy also tied a program record by posting five of the ETSU eight shutouts in 2008.

“I feel the timing is perfect for Ariel’s arrival to our program,” Mangrum said. “We are on an uphill climb and her expertise with not only pitching, but also speed and conditioning training will be the extra boost we need to make it the rest of the way.”

Beus was an assistant at Mountain View High School (Boise, Idaho) last year, as well as a private pitching instructor. The BYU standout led her team to the Mountain West Conference Championship in 2001 and 2005 as well as two NCAA regional appearances. Beus was the first player from BYU to be named the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week. Beus started out as the Sports Clinic Director at Tahoe City Public Utility District in Tahoe City, Calif. in 2005.

“Ariel has played at a very high level and been successful, so she knows what it takes to get there,” added Mangrum. “Her success will bring a new attitude of winning to our team. She also believes in

our program’s foundational values of faith, family, education, and softball. These intangibles will bring great depth to the character of

our program.”

Beus earned her B.S. in exercise science from BYU in 2005. Beus, a native of Houston, Texas, is married to Lance Beus, a former Seattle Mariner.

“Ariel’s husband Lance, a 2005 Seattle Mariner draft pick, brings another added benefit because of his level of competition at that level,” said Mangrum. “I am thrilled to have them both as a part of the family here at ETSU.”

Head coach Andrea Mangrum brought in former University of Louisville standout Sarah Totten to primarily coach the hitters and infielders in 2008-09.

Totten, a four-year letterwinner for the Cardinals, helped direct Louisville to four consecutive NCAA Regional appearances during her career. The 2008 Co-Captain posted an outstanding senior season, where she garnered Second Team All-BIG EAST honors. The Cardinals first baseman fits Mangrum’s small-ball philosophy, as Totten led the BIG EAST in sacrifice bunts (16) and posted a perfect fielding percentage, which also led the league. Totten started in all 54 games in 2008, and hit a career-high .314 (50-159) with 26 RBIs and 31 runs scored. The Louisville, Ky., native also received CoSIDA/ESPN All-District IV honors and was a six-time member of the Athletic Directors honor roll.

“Coach Totten is much like coach Beus, she comes from a program with great softball tradition,” said Mangrum. “Sarah comes from a

winning program and brings that drive, desire, and passion to ETSU.”

This past summer Totten spent time coaching the 18-under Louisville Lady Sluggers. During her stint with the Lady Sluggers, Totten assisted with

weekly practices and conditioning drills. Totten also helped out at Louisville softball clinics, where she trained and supervised campers and also designed game plans for each camp.

Since arriving in Johnson City, Totten has already adjusted nicely to the team, and her strengths will not only help the players but the coaches as well.

“The players have responded in an amazing way since she arrived,” said Mangrum. “One of Sarah’s strong points is defense, so it is a great mix for our staff to have strengths in all aspects of the game. Sarah brings a positive presence to the field, but demands excellence from our players and that is what I appreciate the most.”

HYDROWORXWithout a doubt the most used piece of equipment in the athletic training facility is the Hydroworx polar plunge pool. It is used by all teams on a daily basis post practice and used by all injured athletes under the care of the athletic training staff. Along with the cold pool is a Hydroworx 500 therapy pool. This pool has a treadmill as part of the floor and two cameras mounted on the front and side of the pool. This gives visual feedback to the athlete and athletic trainer during treatment.

BUCSPORTSThe Jerry Robertson BucSports Athletic Medicine Center serves as both the health center for all Buccaneer Athletics as well as an outpatient health center for the ETSU campus and Johnson City community. Athletic trainers, physical therapists, and primary care sports medicine physicians help to provide a comprehensive medical program to all patients. Completed in 2001, BucSports provides a variety of opportunities for physical therapy students, medical students and resident physicians interested in the field of sports medicine.

FLUROSCANThe “Mini C Arm” located in the athletic training room allows for quick and efficient exams by the team physician for those athletes that might need an x-ray.

GENERAL ATHLETIC TRAINING AREAThe general athletic training area is approximately 3500 square feet and services the day-to-day practice and competition preparation for the entire athletic department. With 17 treatment tables, various modalities and a large exercise area the general athletic training area allows multiple teams to receive treatment at the same time. Attached to the general athletic training area are three private rooms. Each room is equipped with a treatment table and combination therapy unit as well as one other distinguishing characteristic. The “Normal” room is for IV therapy, the “College” room is for casting and splinting, and the “University” room is for traction.

Over the past decade one of the biggest changes in collegiate athletics has been the new attitude toward strength and conditioning. ETSU’s success on the field could not have happened without the hard work and dedication of each student-athlete in the weightroom. Under the direction of head strength coach Lee Morrow, who is currently in his 24th season at ETSU, the Buccaneers have earned eight Gatorade/National Strength Coaches Association All-American Team honors. With its recent collaboration with the Sports Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC), ETSU’s strength and conditioning program has focused its efforts on helping each student-athlete reach his/her greatest athletic potential, in the areas of strength, speed, agility and injury prevention. Located inside Memorial Center, the ETSU’s strength and conditioning complex features one of the finest weightrooms in the area. Overall, the Buccaneers have access to a 7,200-foot facility that features state-of-the-art equipment, including customized full power racks, Hammer-Strength machines, including bench press, incline press, military press, rowing machines, speed mats, pull-up and other impressive sports performance tools. Through the SPEC and strength and conditioning web site, ETSU student-athletes have 24-hour access to workout plans, nutrition, and other information that monitors each individual’s or team’s off-season conditioning program.

The Center of Excellence for Sport Science and Coach Education

The Center of Excellence was established July 1, 2008, and is housed in the College of Education. It incorporates three very important aspects of competitive sports: education, service, and research. The former Sport Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC) is now a very active branch of the Center of Excellence. The SPEC program continues to be a collaborative effort between Intercollegiate Athletics and the Sport Science Lab in the Department of Kinesiology, Leisure, and Sport Sciences. Buccaneer student-athletes in collaboration with sport science, sport medicine, and the sport coach have the opportunity to have their program evaluated and monitored throughout their college career. This monitoring and evaluation process produces one of the most advanced training environments in the nation. This type of relationship is not found anywhere in the U.S. and offers a unique opportunity for the advancement of athletic performance, athlete and coach education and sport science research.

The program is dedicated to meeting the following goals: 1. Providing monitoring services for the ETSU sport

teams2. Supporting and providing up-to-date information to

coaches regarding coaching practices 3. Advising on the Training Process4. Providing an opportunity for the interaction

between sport scientists, medical staff, strength and conditioning staff and the ETSU Sport Coaches.

erforming well in the classroom is an expectation of student-athletes who wear the Buccaneer uniform. Not only are time management skills and self-discipline musts, but also dedication and commitment are needed from each individual student to maintain eligibility and progress toward

graduation. ETSU Athletics provides many resources to assist the student-athlete in achieving his/her academic goals and in preparing ultimately for life after college. The staff not only advises students in scheduling classes and making academic progress, but offers support in the areas of group and individual tutoring, academic mentoring, career and personal counseling and life skills programming. Student-athletes have access to a state-of-the-art computer center that features Dell flat-screen computers, wireless Internet technology and study hall facilities that are open after hours during the week and on Sundays for their use. ETSU is also an active participant in the NCAA CHAMPS program. Through this model, student-athletes are offered a wide range of seminars designed to help them adjust to college life, develop as individuals and prepare for their careers after graduation.

The Humphreys Center for student-athletes is the home of our academic support services. Women’s BasketballThe ETSU women’s basketball team went to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history after posting a program-tying 21-win campaign. The Lady Bucs stormed through conference play with an impressive 14-2 record and followed that up with three straight wins in the Atlantic Sun Tournament to receive the league’s automatic bid to the Big Dance. Along the way Michele DeVault and Siarre Evans received First Team All-Atlantic Sun accolades; head coach Karen Kemp was tabbed Coach of the Year for the second time in her career. Five Lady Buccaneer players were named A-Sun

All-Academic, including TaRonda Wiles – who also was named to the All-Tournament Team. Joining Wiles on the tournament team were DeVault and Evans as well as Tournament MVP Latisha Belcher. As a team, ETSU ranked in the top 20 nationally in scoring offense (14th), steals per game (18th) and assists per game (19th); DeVault ranked 12th in three-point field-goal percentage and 23rd in three-point field goals per game. DeVault also set a new all-time record with 239 treys made for her career.

Men’s GolfFor the first time in school history, men’s golf became the only program at ETSU to ever compete in the NCAA Championships 20 times. Under the direction of head coach Fred Warren, the team built on its record number of NCAA appearances, while once again finishing with a trio of Top 20 national team rankings. In addition, senior Gareth Shaw was named PING All-American, marking the second straight year he has earned that honor.

Men’s TennisAfter winning the Atlantic Sun regular season and conference tournament for the second straight season, the ETSU men’s tennis team earned its sixth trip to the NCAA tournament. This time around the No. 7th regionally ranked Bucs added to its program’s storied history by advancing to the second round of the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history, defeating Notre Dame, 4-2, in Columbus, Ohio. Individually, junior Enrique Olivares earned All-America honors after becoming only the second Buccaneer to advance to the NCAA Round of 16, earning a final ITA ranking of eighth regionally.

Women’s Golf Women’s golf made history in 2007-08 by capturing the program’s first-ever conference title and earning its

first trip to the NCAA Championships. The Bucs picked the perfect place to win their first Atlantic Sun Conference championship, doing so on their home course at The Ridges Golf and Country Club in Jonesborough. In addition, the Bucs watched sophomore Laura Jansone capture the A-Sun individual title as well, becoming the first woman to ever win a conference individual championship.

Enrique OlivaresCurrent senior Enrique Olivares earned

All-America honors after becoming only the second Buccaneer to advance to the NCAA Round of 16, earning a final ITA ranking of eighth regionally.

Olya Batsula Olya Batsula was

awarded the National ITA/Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship, which goes to the women’s tennis player who displays inspiring dedication and commitment to her team and who enhances the team’s performance and exemplifies the spirit of college tennis. Batsula was also chosen by the Atlantic Sun Conference to be the A-Sun nominee for the 18th Annual NCAA Woman of the Year Award. Batsula was a first-ever four-time all conference selection and leaves her ETSU career with 179 career victories, which is the third best mark in program history. Off the court Batsula graduated Magna Cum Laude, in May of 2008, and was a four-time member of the ITA Scholar Athlete team. Also Batsula was always active in the community throughout her ETSU career, helping out with the Boys and Girls Club, the Children’s Advocacy Center, Girls Inc., Relay for Life, Special Olympics, and Toys for Tots. Even though Batsula was busy with academics and practices she still found time to give lessons to wheelchair-bound students and underprivileged kids. Batsula would even drive 20 minutes to Kingsport with racquets, balls and a net to give tennis lessons to kids who were interested in the sport, but had no one to teach them the game.

Yevgeniya StupakCurrent junior Yevgeniya Stupak finished the 2007 season with an individual regional ranking of 14th, becoming the first-ever ETSU women’s tennis player to be ranked in singles and doubles regionally at the same time. After claiming 24 victories, including wins over No. 39 Yvette Hyndman of Georgia and No. 17 Amanda Taylor of Vanderbilt, Stupak became the first Lady Buc to qualify for the NCAA singles championship last May.

Gareth ShawShaw earned his second straight Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar award, becoming the first-ever ETSU player to be named to that list two years in a row. Shaw, who enjoyed his own successes on the course with three All-America selections, an Atlantic Sun individual championship, and a conference player of the year award, reached several impressive criteria to receive the award.

Paul HoilmanFirst baseman Paul Hoilman was selected to the “Louisville Slugger” Freshman All-America Team. The Johnson City native was the first freshman ETSU baseball player to receive national recognition in the school’s history. Hoilman was also named to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team after an outstanding freshman campaign finishing tenth in the conference in batting average (.353), fifth in the conference in doubles (18), tied for eighth in home runs (9), ninth in RBIs, ninth in slugging (.598), ninth in total bases (110) and seventh in on-base percentage (.442).

Jenny KnoxShattering school records was a common theme among the 2007-08 Buccaneer track /field team. Jenny Knox set a new time in the 100m, which resulted in her second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Mideast Regional. Knox also helped guide the women’s relay team to the Regional, and ended her career nationally ranked in the 100m as she finished the season 47th.
