unIVersITy rush on The scoreOntario University Athletics returns to The Score Television Network on Sat., Sept. 12 as the defending Yates Cup champion and Vanier Cup finalist Western Mustangs host the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in a rematch of their OUA semifinal game last November.

It is the first of 10 OUA football games to air nationally on The Score in 2009, commencing with the 102nd Yates Cup presented by Pioneer Petroleums on Sat., Nov. 14. Western has claimed North America’s oldest football trophy each of the last two seasons and a record 27 times in its history.

Mustangs fifth-year quarterback Michael Faulds of Eden Mills, Ont. is a pre-season favourite for the Hec Crighton Award, coming off back-to-back Dalt White trophies as Yates Cup most valuable player after leading the nation with 2,596 passing yards during the 2008 regular season. Faulds is within striking distance of the elusive 10,000-yard plateau for his career, and will look to get off to a good start against the Golden Hawks.

The game will be a homecoming for Laurier quarterback Luke Thompson of London, Ont. who is looking to erase the memory of a 36-28 playoff loss at TD Waterhouse Stadium back on Nov. 1. Thompson was intercepted five times in that contest; a sour end to what had been a breakthrough season for the third-year pivot. He threw for over 1,800 yards and 19 touch-downs during the 2008 regular season.

On Sat., Sept. 19, the Battle of Waterloo takes centre stage as Laurier hosts its cross-town rival Waterloo Warriors. The game will mark the first time Canadian Interuniversity Sport and OUA rookie-of-the-year Jordan Verdone of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. will perform in front of the nation. His 52.5 total tackles and 44 solo tackles were good for second place in OUA and top six in the nation in 2008.

A rematch of the 2007 Yates Cup will take place on Sat., Sept. 26 as the Guelph Gryphons host the Western Mustangs. The Gryphons

are led by fifth-year quarterback Justin Dunk of Guelph, Ont. who is 111 passing yards behind Faulds entering the 2009 season and will challenge in the Hec Crighton race. Not to be excluded is Guelph running back Nick Fitzgib-bon of Puslinch, Ont. who was second in OUA rushing yards in 2008.

The final three regular season telecasts are re-served for games with playoff implications and will be announced at a later date. University Rush games will air on The Score on Oct. 3, Oct. 17 and Oct. 24.

The Score will broadcast four of five OUA playoff games in 2009, beginning with a quarter-final game on Sat., Oct. 31. Both OUA semifinal games will be showcased as part of a University Rush doubleheader on Sat., Nov. 7. The OUA football season concludes on Sat., Nov. 14 with the 102nd Yates Cup presented by Pioneer Petroleums.

Play-by-play announcer and 2009 OUA Media Award winner Tim Micallef returns for an eighth season calling games on Saturdays and will be joined by former OUA and CFL star Mike Morreale who is back in the booth for his sophomore season.

oVerTIMe/rule changesIn the event a game is tied after regulation, an overtime will be used to decide a winner. Since 2002, OUA has used the shoot-out format for overtime. The winning team shall receive two points for the victory, while the losing team will receive no points. This rule was implemented in the 2006 OUA season.

ForMatEach extra period shall consist of two series with both teams beginning their series at the opponent’s 35-yard line. Each team retains the ball during a series until it scores, or there is a turnover or a team fails to make a first down. The team scoring the most points during the extra period(s) shall be declared the winner. In the event that the game is tied after three extra series, all teams must attempt a two-point conversion after scoring a touchdown. There are no time outs during overtime play. Each team shall have an equal number of series, except when the defensive team scores on the first possession of a series. In the event of a turnover, the ball remains alive until it is declared dead. However, the team on offence may not have a first and 10 if it regains possession of the ball after a change of team possession.

exaMPleTeam A turns the ball over to Team B, which returns the ball toward Team A’s goal but fumbles the ball and Team A recovers. Once the play is blown dead, Team A’s attempt at scoring ends and Team B takes possession on the 35-yard line to begin their possession.

coin tossAt the conclusion of regulation, the officials and team captains will meet at the centre of the field for a coin toss. The winner of the toss shall choose one of the following options:1. Offence or defence, with the offence at the opponent’s 35-yard line to start OT.2. Which end of the field shall be used for both series of that overtime period. The loser of the toss shall exercise the remaining option for the first extra period and shall have the first choice of the two options for subsequent even-numbered extra period.

oua Playoff TIe-breaKIng ProceDurestie-Breaking Procedures For FootBall1. Most league wins (if the teams have played the same number of games).2. Record in head-to-head competition (if all teams involved in the tie have played each other at least once).3. Point difference in head-to-head competition (if all teams involved in the tie have played each other at least once).4. Record in games within the division.5. Record in games against common opponents.6. Record in games against each of the other teams in the division, starting at the top of the stand-ing and continuing in descending order.7. Point difference in games within the division.8. Point difference in games against common opponents.9. Point difference in games against the highest divisional opponent not involved in the tie.10. Point difference in games against the second-highest divisional opponent not involved in the tie.11. If the tie persists, repeat Step 10 using the other teams in the division in descending order until the tie is broken.12. Total point difference.13. Coin toss (if two teams are tied) or drawing of lots (if more than two teams are tied).

deFinitions1. Record is determined by calculating the winning percentage as follows: (Wins + Ties/2)/Games Played

2. For the purpose of this rule, "division" is defined as the basis on which playoff positions are determined. If playoff positions are determined on a league-wide basis, then the league is to be considered one "division" for the purposes of the rule, regardless of the number of divisions that may exist for scheduling or other purposes.

3. Point difference is calculated by taking the number of points (touchdowns, field goals, etc.) score by a team, and subtracting the number of points (touchdowns, field goals, etc.) allowed by a team. When point difference is to break a tie between teams who have played an unequal number of games against each other, the difference is NOT weighted to compensate for the number of games played. Any weighting would magnify the differences apparent in the number of games played.

note: When using the above system separates one or more teams from the other, those teams shall be ranked accordingly and any remaining ties shall be broken by reverting to Step 1 of the appropriate system.

yaTes cuP hIsToryYates Cup competition began in 1898 in the inaugural season of the Canadian Intercollegiate Rugby Football Union. It is North America’s oldest football trophy still being presented, pre-dating the Grey Cup and the Michigan-Minnesota “Little Brown Jug” by 11 years. The trophy was presented by Dr. Henry Brydges Yates, a former McGill football player who had graduated in medicine in 1893. A lecturer in bacteriology at McGill from 1893 to 1914, and later served as a Lieuten-ant Colonel in the Canadian Army Medical Corps during World War I. While overseas, Dr. Yates fell ill with bronchitis which claimed his life in 1915.From its inception through 1970, the Yates Cup was awarded to the top-ranked team at the end of the regular season. For much of that period, the league consisted of four teams (McGill, Queen’s, Toronto, Western), so a six-week schedule allowed a double round-robin format. A post-season playoff was only held if there was a tie for first place, or the second-place team had beaten the leader in league play. As such, there were just 27 Yates Cup championship games before 1971, and a total of 65 to date. With the reorganisation of the Ontario Universities Athletic Association in 1971, a formal playoff structure was introduced, and the Yates Cup was awarded to the winner of the championship game. Between 1974 and 1978, the Cup was awarded jointly to the champions of the East and West Divisions.Entering its 102nd season of competition in 2009, the Yates Cup has been won the most times by the Western Mustangs, who have 28 league titles. The Varsity Blues, winners of the inaugural championship in 1898, stand second with 25 victories. This year’s Yates Cup presented by Pioneer Petroleums will take place on Nov. 14 at the home of the highest remaining playoff seed.

cIs awarDsthaine carter (Queen’s)cis Presidents’ trophyoua President’s trophyThaine Carter was the first Queen’s Gael to claim the CIS Presidents' Trophy as the nation's best defensive player since the inception of the award in 1980.The 6-foot-2, 225-pound fourth-year senior led his team in tackles for the second straight season with a total of 42.5, including 33 solo, while also racking up three quarterback sacks, two forced fumbles and a pair of fumble recoveries in eight conference outings. The economics student, who was named an OUA all-star for the second year in a row and a first-team all-Canadian, helped the Queen's defence finish first in Ontario with the fewest points allowed (116) and rushing yards allowed per game (87), totals that were good for second and third place in the country, respectively.Carter led the Gaels to the first 8-0 campaign in team his-tory, their first unblemished conference record since 1989 (7-0) and their first regular season title since 1997, when Queen's topped the defunct OQIFC with a 6-2 mark.Carter was selected in the sixth round (45th overall) by Win-nipeg in the 2009 CFL Canadian Draft.

david haMilton (toronto)cis russ Jackson awardoua russ Jackson award nomineeDavid Hamilton was the first Varsity Blue to receive the prestigious Russ Jackson Award presented since 1986 to a player who exemplifies the attributes of football skill, academic achievement and citizenship. The fifth-year pivot helped the U of T snap a 49-game losing streak with an 18-17 season-opening win over Water-loo, and had a career day in week three throwing for 465 yards and four touch-downs to garner CIS player-of-the-week honours. He finished the campaign with 2,139 yards through the air, becoming only the second Varsity Blue in history to reach the 2,000-yard plateau after Hec Crighton-winning quarterback Dan Feraday in the early 1980s.As a human biology major, Hamilton's scholastic achievements have been just as impressive. He was a 2007-08 academic all-Canadian, the recipient of the Faculty of Arts and Science Racozki Award (for highest standing in an independent study on international economic history), a two-time recipient of the football award of merit, winner of the 2008 Maynard captain's award, and a University of Toronto Bronze T-holder award winner for excellence in athletics and academics.Hamilton volunteers with the Paediatric Ward of the Toronto East General Hospital, where he spends two to four hours per week counselling and entertaining children. He was the top fundraiser for Athletes in Africa in a friendly competition between York University and the University of Toronto, an organizing member of the on-campus Christian organization, Athletes in Action, and a volunteer with the Evergreen Youth Shelter where he spent time counselling at-risk teenagers.

cIs awarDsPat sheahan (Queen’s)cis Frank tindall trophyoua coach of the yearCapping his 20th season as a CIS football head coach, Pat Sheahan of the Queen's Gaels was the 2008 recipient of the Frank Tindall Trophy as CIS coach of the year. He became only the second Queen's sideline boss to capture the prestigious award since its inception in 1969, following Doug Hargreaves in 1983. The trophy itself is named in honour of long-time Queen's football head coach Frank Tindall (1939, 1948-1975).In Sheahan's ninth season at the helm, his Gaels spent five weeks at No. 2 in the national Top 10 media poll and finished 8-0 in conference play for the first time in team history. It marked Queen's first unblemished regular season since a 7-0 cam-paign in 1989, and the eighth in the program's storied history that dates back to 1882. The team also claimed its first regular season title since a first-place finish in the defunct OQIFC in 1997, before suffering a heart-breaking 23-13 loss to Ottawa in the semifinal round of the OUA playoffs. The Gaels were dominant on both sides of the ball in 2008, leading the nation with 374 points scored and finishing first in Ontario and third in the country with 116 points allowed.Running back Mike Giffin (MVP), linebacker Thaine Carter (defensive player of the year) and defensive end Osie Ukwuoma (outstanding down lineman) captured individual awards in OUA, with Carter winning the Presi-dents' Trophy as the top defensive player in CIS.Sixteen Queen's players were named OUA all-stars and eight of them achieved all-Canadian status, including six as members of the first CIS team.Since joining the Queen's staff in 2000, Sheahan has compiled a 43-29 record in the regular season and a 5-6 playoff mark. Sheahan is a five-time conference coach of the year, twice in the old OQIFC (1998, 1990) and three times in OUA (2008, 2007, 2001).

Jordan verdone (Waterloo)cis Peter gorman trophyoua norm Marshall trophyJordan Verdone became the first Waterloo Warrior to be named CIS' top rookie since the Peter Gorman Trophy was first presented in 1976.The 5-foot-11, 215-pound freshman had an immediate impact in his university debut as he led the Warriors with 52.5 total tackles and 44 solo tackles, tallies that were good for second place in OUA and top six in the nation. The 19-year-old, who also played a key role on special teams and got the call as a fullback in short yardage situations, finished second on his team with three sacks and had one interception as he played each of Waterloo's eight conference games."Jordan is quite simply our best football player all around, period. He is the most instinctive linebacker I have coached since Mike O'Shea at Guelph or Mike McCullough and Adam McDonald at StFX, all of whom either graduated to the CFL or are still in the CFL," said Waterloo head coach Dennis McPhee. "Jordan would not only dress, but start on any team in the CIS, and that is, in my opinion, the easiest and best way to measure a player's true value."

oua awarDsMike giFFin (Queen’s)oua Most valuable PlayerRunning back Mike Giffin was the 2008 most valuable player of OUA. He earned his second consecutive OUA rushing title in 2008, running for 1,061 yards during the regular season. He averaged just over seven yards per carry. Giffin also led OUA and CIS in touchdowns with 14 touchdowns, with 12 coming on the ground. Giffin rushed for over 200 yards in three games in 2008, and had a string of 14 consecutive regular games with over 100 rushing yards that spanned three seasons. A knee injury in the final game of the regular season ended his 2008 campaign prematurely, as Giffin was not able to take part in a semifinal loss to Ottawa

osie ukWuoMa (Queen’s)oua J.P. Metras trophyOsie Ukwuoma was the 2008 OUA lineman of the year. Ukwuoma gave opposing quarterbacks fits in 2008, sacking pivots 9.5 times to lead OUA and tie a conference record. This was good for a share of top spot in CIS with UBC’s Scott McCuaig. Ukwuoma participated in the CIS East West Bowl in 2008. He is blessed with the tools to be an elite player, benching 225 pounds 18 times during fall testing, while running a 4.73 in the 40-yard dash. He was selected in the fifth round (40th overall) by the Calgary Stampeders in the 2009 CFL Canadian Draft.

Michael Faulds (Western)oua dalt White trophyWestern Mustangs quarterback Michael Faulds won his second consecutive Dalt White Trophy as the Yates Cup most valuable player. Faulds was forced to contend with a stiff breeze at TD Waterhouse Stadium, but still completed 15 of 29 pass attempts for 201 yards and a touchdown. He also scrambled for 52 yards, and most importantly, did not turn the ball over, keeping the ball out of Ottawa’s hands. Western won its second straight Yates Cup title by a score of 31-17.
