About The Edo Leadership AssemblyThe Edo Leadership Assembly was founded in 2008 to foster cross-ethnic collaboration, focused and goals orientated engagement and contributions to the development of Edo State. While also addressing specific issues that impact Benin people.

The principal organizational vehicles for our activities are:Programs and Events• Projects that will benefit all Edos irrespective of language or ethnic affiliations• Policy briefings• Collaboration with other groups•

As a registered non-profit organization in the United States, ELA supports the activities of its members to: develop their leadership skills, become active change agents in their communities and make invaluable contributions to the development of our people and Edo state.

Mission: To develop a leadership cadre of men and women, committed to advancing the social, cultural, economic and political interests of all Edos, with particular focus on issues that af-fect Benin people.

Vision:To promote the unity, development and advancement of the Edos• To facilitate the Benin Development goals• To work collaboratively with other ethnic groups in Nigeria• To foster capacity building and leadership development•

The Three Principles of Edo Leadership AssemblyOyayasivbie Evbuomwan -- PATRIOTISMELA sees the need for a movement that is dedicated to addressing issues that affect Benin people, by allocating time, resources and skills, to advance the Benin development agenda. ELA recognizes the cardinal notion that, with few exceptions, the Benins can look to no one, but themselves to improve their stations in life. Edoyęmwen -- DIGNITY Pride in and knowledge of Benin tradition, culture, history, and people hood. Edoyęmwen is the need to have pride in our people, without being maligned and relegated to a position of irrelevance. Edoyęmwen connotes pride, self-respect and the dignity in being a Benin.Akugbe -- UNITYCreates within the Benin man or woman the knowledge that it is Benin unity, hard work and self-discipline that will lead to the progress of the Benin people.

Sustaining Democracy Responsive Leadership

My Dear Compatriots,

Welcome to the 2009 Edo Leadership Summit! A first of its kind event, organized to create a platform that will foster a strong and viable relationship between the leadership of Edo State and the Edo diaspora, for the purpose of increasing the pace of development in our beloved State.

We are living in a momentous age of globalization, technological advancement and innovation, where the keys to success lie with government’s ability to marshal scarce resources for the benefit of the masses. Everything we know about today’s global economy and human development tells us that investment in the masses, particularly in the welfare of the poor and disenfranchised, is one of the wisest and most prudent investments any society can make. This is a herculean task that requires a strong partnership between the government of Edo State and the Edo diaspora. Therefore, the theme of this summit, Sustaining Democracy: Responsive Leadership, Economic Empowerment and Cultural Renaissance provides a framework for a solutions oriented dialogue and goal setting that will lead to a renewed commitment from the Edo indigenes abroad to contribute substantially towards the socio-economic advancement of all Edo indigenes.

Our commitment to advancing the development goals of Edo State is unrelenting. ELA represents a new generation of non partisan socio-cultural organizations in the diaspora. We draw from the past to develop the future, while also recognizing the urgency of the present. Through ELA, Edo diasporans will become vitally connected to the world they seek - a world of ideas, of challenges, of possibilities and of partnerships.

I invite you to become part of our momentum and join the collective movement to build for our people and ourselves a future bright with promise and potential. The time for an Edo State Economic, Cultural, and Leadership renaissance is now!

Welcome to the State of Illinois and the land of Lincoln and Obama!

Oba gha t’okpere

Sincerely,Oboma Asemota Dr. Oboma Asemota President

Welcome message from the ELA President

ABOUT CHICAGO

Chicago is the largest city in the U.S. state of Illinois, and with over 2.8 million people is the third largest city in the United States. Located on the southwestern shores of Lake Michigan, Chicago is the third-most densely populated major city in the U.S., and anchor to the world’s 26th largest metropolitan area with over 9.5 million people across three states.

After a series of wars with the local American Natives, Chicago was founded in 1833, near a portage between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River watershed. The city became a major transportation and telecommunications hub in North America. Today, the city retains its status as a major hub, both for industry and infrastructure, with its O’Hare Airport as the second busiest airport in the world. In modern times, the city has taken on additional dimension as a center for business and finance, and is listed as one of the world’s top ten Global Financial Centers. Chicago is a stronghold of the Democratic Party, and has been home to influential politicians, including the current President of the United States, Barack Obama [and Abraham Lincoln]. The World Cities Study Group at Loughborough University rated Chicago as an alpha world city.

As of 2007, the city attracts 44.2 million visitors annually. Making use of its abundant resources, Chicago has a heritage for hosting major international, national, regional, and local events that include commerce, culture, entertainment, politics, and sports. In 2008, Chicago was chosen as one of the final four world city candidates to host the 2016 Summer Olympics and is the only American city on the list.

Globally recognized. Chicago has numerous nicknames, which reflect the impressions and opinions about historical and contemporary Chicago. The best known include: “Chi-town”; the “Windy City” with reference to Chicago politicians and residents boasting about their city; “Second City,” due to the city generally being the second most prestigious in the nation in terms of transportation, culture, and finance and the “City of the Big Shoulders”, referring to its numerous skyscrapers, which were invented in Chicago, and described as being husky and brawling.

Sustaining Democracy Responsive Leadership

Welcome and Greetings from the Summit Coordinator

Dear Friends,

A few thoughts as you prepare to encounter the 2009 Edo Leadership Summit! I implore you to actively participate in the summit’s menu of activities. The essence of any great gathering is the willingness of people who are cerebral, to come together to dialogue about issues that they are passionate about in a manner that delights and inspires action! Every participant in this summit brings value and adds to the greater good by contributing their genius to the dialogic process. As we at ELA re-shape and re-invigorate the diaspora relationship with the homeland and on behalf of the ELA members, officers and the volunteers who worked so hard to make this Summit a reality and a success, I welcome you to Chicago, the “windy city” and I thank you sincerely for honoring the invitation to leave all else, to come and spend a weekend of high level and serious deliberations with your fellow Edo patriots. Ob’ okhian! Mo Khia! Obo-shan!

Let me use this opportunity to give a quick run-down of what to expect this weekend: Break out Sessions – allows for the sharing of concrete ideas and realistic solutions Panel Presentations – creates an opportunity for a wider communal discussion on specific issues around governance and democracy. Ideas and Projects Exhibition – brings people with ideas and projects that will benefit Edo State in contact with leaders from the State and Summit participants. Gala and Awards Banquet – is a celebration of all Edo State indigenes in general and recognition of the outstanding achievements and selfless service of a few of our compatriots and organizations.

In closing, I ask that you think innovatively and outside the box this weekend. Together we can take this gathering to another level by thinking creatively and staying committed to the goals of the summit. The mission of the organizers of this summit, donors, and volunteers is nothing less than to do the community proud by staging an event that breaks out of the old mode of doing things and embraces new and exciting thinking that both enlightens and enlivens in such a way that at the end of it all, people will leave this confab with new knowledge, inspiration, and a renewed determination to get engaged and stay involved! Essentially the activities at this Summit are an embodiment of the leadership and capacity building ethos of ELA.

Our goal is to make this weekend a positively eventful weekend for each and everyone of you! Activities have been arranged with an eye to meeting and exceeding participants’ expectations of valued added and valued received.

I wish you all a very productive confab as you rekindle old friendships and forge new ones.God Bless Edo State, the Heartbeat of Nigeria!

Dr. Gregson Orobosa Oghafua has created the FUFU MAGIC for all of those who love fufu!

Dr. Oghafua was born in Benin City, Nigeria. He emigrated to the United States of America at the age of 17 to go to college. Like almost all African immigrants, he worked odd jobs -- dishwasher, janitor, security

guard, and machinist while paying his way through college and Medical School.

He received his MD (Doctor of Medicine) from Howard University College of Medicine in 1984. He followed with his Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine at Howard University Hospital and a Fellowship in Cardiology at Howard University Hospital. He went on to a Cardiology Fellowship, which included Inter-

ventional Cardiology, at Louisiana State University Medical Center in Shreveport, Louisiana He is a Board Certified Cardiologist and has practiced Cardiology for 17 years.

Because of his love of fufu, Dr. Oghafua has worked hard to develop the FUFU MAGIC . Development of

FUFU MAGIC began as soon as God blessed him with the original invention in December 2004.

He looks forward to the opportunity to bring you FUFU MAGIC to enhance your life!

Distinguished Service Award:

In January 2004, Dr. Mercy Obeime delivered about $800,000 of donated medicine and supplies to her homeland, Nigeria. That was during her ”spare time“ as director of the Mercy Foundation, a non–profit healthcare organization she and several classmates from medical school started in 2001 to help fight HIV—AIDS in Nigeria, which she confides is “a big, silent problem, with lots more out there.”During her normal “nine–to–five” life and well beyond, of course, like the deeply caring family physician she is, Obeime can be found at the Saint Francis Neighborhood Health Center at Garfield Park, where she has served as Medical Director since 1996. She was nominated a Local Legend by Representative Julia Carson [D–IN–7]. In prior recognition of her dedication and commitment to the inner–city residents of Indianapolis, Obeime was chosen as a National Winner of the 2003 Spirit of Women Awards in the Healthcare category. She is committed to treating the whole person, regardless of ability to pay. “It is very important to treat people with compassion and dignity,” she says “to listen and find out what it is they want. Along with all the technology of American medicine, there is a need for faith and values, espe-cially with older people.” Whether at home in Indianapolis or back home in Nigeria, Obeime’s strong commitment to public health enhances the quality of life for women, their children and families, and their communities.

Edo State Women Association (ESWA) is an African Diaspora organisation established in 1991 by a group of women from the Nigerian Home Town Association living in the United Kingdom, who at the time were experiencing similar needs relat-ing to family, community and social issues.

ESWA focuses on key projects to improve the lives of mothers and children working in the markets in Edo State. Initially, the group sought to address the concerns of women from Edo State origin 0nly, but over the years ESWA has transformed into a community group, seeking to tackle wider issues faced by local residents in United Kingdom, USA and Nigeria. ESWA also sup-ports important projects in the United Kingdom benefiting children from underprivileged backgrounds within the African com-munity in London. ESWA works within communities in Nigeria and the UK to tackle issues at grassroots level and in the past years has made a difference to hundred’s of lives. ESWA’s support enables women to become empowered, to support themselves and give their children a chance of achieving a better life.As a duly registered British Charity, ESWA is recognized for her significant contributions in Edo State, Nigeria and United King-dom and has established several significant projects, such as: Community Pre-School (a free child care service for the children of market women in Edo State), to support children of low income market women, and in United Kingdom, Toys Appeal and Youth Club to support children from underprivileged backgrounds within the African community in London. ESWA’s mission is to make a great difference in the lives of children, youths and women in Edo State and around the world, and create a good global image of Africa, while setting an acceptable standard of living for mothers and their children.

ESWA’s Director, Eki Ogbeide, was invited by the Queen of England on 12th November 2007, to attend a reception with the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh at Buckingham Palace- as a reflection ESWA’s work and association with Commonwealth African countries. This was a distinguished privilege for ESWA.

AAWE does this by: 1. Involving community leaders, institutions, the law enforcement agencies and legislatures, media and the hotel and tourist industries in the fight against prostitution and commercial traffic in women and children. 2. Liaising with other organizations with similar objectives to fight this modern slave trade. 3. Lobbying the government of Edo State to enact appropriate laws and policies, which explicitly criminalize the trafficking in human beings, especially teenage girls and women. 3. Offering scholarships to both high school and university students 4. Providing Micro-Credit Loans to women to start cottage industries. 5. Providing mentoring programs for both high school and university students Many of our high school scholarship recipients have completed their education and three of our University students have graduated from the University of Benin. Two are lawyers and the third student studied Business Administration. Over 250 women have benefited from the Micro-Credit Loan program. AAWE is in the process of starting a Micro-Credit School.

Community Leadership Award:Mr. Aiyamenkhue Edokpolo is currently pursuing graduate studies in Public Administration at the University of Benin. This is in addition to his other responsibilities with the Edo State Government. As a young activist, Comrade Aiya (as he is fondly called by friends and associates) became concerned by the worrisome decline in values and morals in the society; hence in 2000, he joined forces with his colleagues to spear-head the Benin Youth Congress- a socio-cultural group. This later gave birth to the Benin National Congress (BNC) in August 2005. The BNC is an organization at the apex of fostering the much desired Edo cultural and social renaissance. Mr. Aiyamenkhue Edokpolo has a strong record of community activism for positive change and he has subsequently taken on the leadership mantle of mobilizing his contemporaries to become active civil advocates for socio-political progress in Edo State, Niger Delta and Nigeria at large. Some highlights of his community leadership include: writing petitions to the House of Representatives to take up the issue of repatriating stolen Benin artifacts, petitioning the Federal government of Nigeria in July 2007 over the continued looting of Be-nin artifacts by those meant to be caretakers of the art works. As a result, five directors and assistants in the Ministry of Tour-ism, Culture and National Orientation in October 2007, were subsequently fired. In addition to being an active voice within the numerous voices agitating for the return of stolen Benin artifacts, he also sought legal review of the unjust appropriation of Edo oil wells to neighboring States of Ondo and Delta. His commitment to the community has garnered him audience with the Oba of Benin as well as an invited reception in 2008 at Government House by Prof. Senator, Osarhiemen Osunbor for his doggedness in the fight for social justice and cultural rebirth on behalf of Edo people.Additionally, in recognition of his leadership ability and remarkable work ethics, he was appointed Senior Special Assistant to Edo State Governor- Politics and Strategy, by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, the Governor of Edo State. Aiyamenkhue is the recipient of several awards; including the Midwest Achievers Award by the Midwest Herald 2007. In his spare time, he is an active member of his local Rotary club.

On behalf of the Edo Leadership Assembly, I extend a warm greeting to you all for gracing this must-attend event. Based on the meticulous and sound planning put in place by the ELA planning committee, I have no doubt that we are all in for a collective treat and a productive gathering! It gladdens my heart to know that the ELA has taken a leadership role in bringing all stakeholders together, irrespective of ideological or philosophical differences, kudos to the pioneer members and founders of the Edo Leadership Assembly.

ELA has, through the quality of the program they have put together, and the professional manner in which every aspect of the organization has so far been executed, shown that they are an organization to be reckoned with and ready for serious business.

I invite you to join me in wholeheartedly supporting the efforts of this noble group. When I was asked to be the Chief Launcher of the ELA project that will be launched at the Gala and Awards Banquet, I only accepted the invitation after thorough appraisal of the group’s worthiness. Dear All,

Greetings! And many thanks for gracing this occasion with your distinguished presence. On behalf of the members and officers of the Edo Leadership Assembly, I say welcome. As you know, the purpose of the Gala and Awards Banquet is to both recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of Edo people in various facets of life and particularly shine the spotlight on a select few who have distinguished themselves in all areas.

While we celebrate what has been accomplished, it is also important for us to re-commit ourselves to what is still yet to be done. There is much work yet, and the laborers are few. Hence, the second purpose of the Banquet is a call to action for us all to join our brothers and sisters of the Edo Leadership Assembly, to support them by donating generously towards their project. In this vein, I want to specially appeal to my sisters, to support the work of ELA. We all know that poverty disproportionately affects women. And as women with means, it is our responsibility to find ways to reach out to those who are less fortunate.

I wholeheartedly support the mission and vision of ELA in relation to instituting programs that will alleviate poverty in Edo state and beyond.

Thank you very much for your time.

With Regards,
