BUILDING ON PROVIDENCE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
President’s Progress Report
Creating the Campus Center
This has been a messy year…in a very good way! Restoring, rehabbing, and reconstructing the former Convent into the Najim Campus Center has been a challenging endeavor. In the course of bringing the building up to code and installing all the infrastructure for new plumbing, electrical and air conditioning, we have been able to see the bare bones of the original structure, and it has been at once messy and wonderful. Artifacts have emerged, quite literally, from behind the walls chronicling the times of the building’s first inhabitants. Floors have been removed to install a sprinkler system while some walls have been torn down and others newly built. Windows and doors have been restored and in some cases relocated. The catering kitchen and management office now exists where once there was the Sisters’ Chapel. We have preserved the magnificent dining room while at the same time we added high tech capabilities for its future use. Workmen have painstakingly built new window framing and sills to replicate the original woodwork and stained them to match the original wood in the house. Insulation has been added in areas where there was none before, and the library and learning center is coming into being on the 2nd floor. All of this work has involved many sub-contractors and skilled workmen with even more needed over the next few months. One person in particular stands out over the past year: Bob Shearer. Bob, a very faithful friend of Providence, has taken on the most difficult job of overseeing the project on behalf of the school. Although Bob never had a daughter who attended Providence and has never served on the School Board, he has, however, been a constant and faithful supporter of the work done at Providence. His volunteering to lead this project has been a priceless gift to the campaign, and I can’t imagine tackling this project without him. The work completed is gratifying and I thank all those who have made it possible. The work ahead, however, is still great. We have raised more than two million dollars to date, but we need at least that much again to complete the work on the grounds and the main school building upgrades. There are many ways to be a part of this campus-wide improvement effort and share in the exciting times at Providence today. I welcome the opportunity to talk with you about this wonderful project. Every time I visit the campus these days, the progress on the Najim Campus Center is evident. Recently, we were selecting light fixtures for the first floor and planning colors for the interior, so it all is beginning to feel close now. Over the course of the past few years working on this campaign, so many kind and generous people have helped us get this far, and I am personally very grateful to all of them. The work of educating today’s young women is an important task and being able to use our amazing old-house-turned-campus-center will enhance the experience for each of them. As we get closer to completion of this phase, I am acutely aware of the fact that we can’t stop here, rest, and think the work is over. We still must fund the furniture for the Najim Campus Center as well as continue with the next phase of the Capital Campaign. For Providence to take her rightful place in the heart of the new River North Neighborhood, we must improve the grounds and upgrades to the nearly 60 year old school building. Please join me in your support of this extraordinary school. Estela Avery ‘70 Campaign Chair
Our FutureOur FutureOur FutureOur Future Providence was abuzz last November when Mr. Harvey Najim unveiled a check in the amount of $1,000,000, a gift to the Building On Providence Capital Campaign. The former Drought House will now be known as the Najim Campus Center, named in honor of Mr. Najim’s mother, Jamelia Najim. The Marian Choristers opened the ceremonies lifting their beautiful voices in thanksgiving for this gift and all it will accomplish. Among other improvements to the campus center will be a second floor state of the art library and resource center. Christine Hernandez, class of 1969 and Board Chair, emceed the press conference which was attended by the student body, faculty and staff, the CDPs, Board members, and invited guests. The media showed up in force to mark this momentous occasion. Sister Jane Ann Slater, CDP, spoke about the history of the school and the original campaign to build a school to nurture strong women leaders. Estela Avery class of 1970, and Campaign Chair, had the honor of presenting Mr. Najim with a Provet pin and expressing her thanks for his belief in Providence and the importance of Catholic education continuing in our community. Estela and Jim Avery have been the driving force behind the BOP Campaign from the beginning, allowing the creation of the beautiful art studio named in their honor on the Providence campus. Anne Bristol, President of Providence, wrapped up the morning’s events thanking Mr. Najim on behalf of the entire Providence family. She announced further good news in the form of a $100,000 donation that came in from the Toogood Family in Dallas who took up the challenge to follow Mr. Najim’s lead and believe in the power of Catholic education. At Providence, we believe in these girls, their futures, and the future of the school.
Opportunities to partner with Providence on this
exciting project exist at many levels.
