Robert Morris University Athletics stands for success. Since 1990, the Colonials have claimed 26 Northeast Conference regular-season championships and 30 league tournament titles among 23 sports, including seven NEC tournament titles in volleyball, six NEC Tournament championships in softball, five regular-season titles infootball and three NEC Tournament championships each in men’s soccer and men’s and women’s basketball. The 2008-09 athletic season saw the Colonial athletic programs continue to rank near the top of their respective conferences, as the men’s basketball team claimed its second straight Northeast Conference regular-season championship and sixth overall. The Colonials went on to win their league-record sixth NEC Tournament championship and subsequent bid to the NCAA Tournament with a 48-46 win over Mount St. Mary’s in the title game at the Charles L. Sewall Center in front3,227fans,thefirstselloutinschoolhistory. Also during the 2008-09 season the Robert Morris volleyballteamearneditsfifthoutrightNECregular-seasonchampionship and sixth overall in 2008, posting a perfect 8-0 record in league play. The exploits of the RMU athletic program in 2008-09 followed a 2007-08 athletic season that saw the men’s basketballteamclaimitsfirstNortheastConferenceregular-season title since 1992, while the women’s basketball program claimed its second straight NEC Tournament championship and subsequent appearance in the NCAA Tournament. In 2006-07, Robert Morris had one of its best seasons in Division I history, as a number of team and individual accomplishments highlighted the year. The Colonial women’s basketball team completed one of the greatest turnarounds in Division I history by claiming its third NEC Tournament Championshipanditsfirst-everNCAATournamentbid,whilethe Robert Morris men’s ice hockey team pulled off one of the biggest upsets in school history in January of 2007 by garnering a 4-2 victory at Notre Dame, which entered the game ranked No. 2 in the country. Individually in 2006-07, senior Stephanie Kuhn of the RMU women’soutdoortrackandfieldteamqualifiedfortheNCAAChampionships in the javelin. Kuhn, the only student-athlete to qualify for theNCAAChampionships in track and field, turned the trick twice in her four years on the team, also accomplishing the feat as a freshman. Offthefield,atotalofsixstudent-athleteswerenamedtotheir respective ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II Teams in 2006-07, while senior Ray Gensler of the football team was named an Academic All-American for the second straight year, the first student-athlete in school history toearn Academic All-America honors twice. The 2006-07 athletics campaign followed a 2005-06 season in which the men’s soccer team added to its illustrious history by downing No. 1 seed Monmouth, 3-2 in overtime, toclaimitsthirdNECTournamenttitleandfirstsince1994.The Robert Morris softball squad, under the guidance of director of athletics Craig Coleman, M.D., also captured its fourth regular-season championship, tying Long Island for the top spot with a 17-3 league record. During the 2004-05 athletics campaign, the Colonial softball squad captured its third NEC regular-season title with a 17-3 league record, then swept through the NEC Tournamentforitsfifthtournamenttitleandfirstappearancein the NCAA Tournament in school history.

The success RMU athletics has had in recent years followed theseasonsbeforeit,astheColonialfootballteamfinishedits2000seasonaperfect10-0, thefirstperfectcampaignfor any sport at Robert Morris. In the process, the team won its second straight NCAA I-AA Mid-Major National Championship, according to Don Hansen’s National Football Weekly Gazette. The program celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2003 and moved into its own on-campus football stadium, named Joe Walton Stadium in honor of the program’s only head coach, in 2005. The women’s rowing team claimed two straight national championships in the varsity four classification at theprestigious Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa., in 2000 and 2001. The trend of success by Colonial athletics in the new millennium should come as no surprise. Five teams achieved national rankings during the 1990s, with the 1994 women’s softball team reaching No. 23, the 1994 men’s soccer team peakingatNo.16,the1996footballsquadfinishingsecondin the NCAA I-AA non-scholarship ranks, the 1997 football teamplacingthirdandthe1999footballteamplacingfirst. Robert Morris has sent 17 teams to NCAA Tournaments since 1982. Men’s basketball has made an NEC record six appearances, while volleyball owns an NEC record fiveappearances.RMU’smen’sbasketballprogramhasqualifiedfor the NCAA Tournament in 1982, 1983, 1989, 1990, 1992 and2009,whilevolleyballmadefivestraightappearancesfrom 1999 to 2003. The Colonial men’s soccer team has also appeared in the NCAA Tournament three times (1993, 1994 and 2005). Robert Morris University has also had several athletes continue their athletic career in professional sports. The late Tim Hall (1996) was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the sixth round of the 1996 NFL Draft as a running back. Then, in 2001, former offensive lineman Hank Fraley (1999) became the starting center for the Philadelphia Eagles after being signed to the practice squad during the 2000 season. He currently is the starting center for the Cleveland Browns. Men’s soccer player Musa Shannon (1997) was drafted by the Tampa Bay Mutiny of Major League Soccer as the 28th overall pick in the 1997 MLS College Draft. Five other former Colonial men’s soccer players have played professionally, as Steve Bell (1997) and Doug Petras (1994) saw action with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, while Rhian Dodds (2003) plays for the Kilmarnock Football Club of the Scottish Premier League. Athletes are not the only ties that RMU athletics has to the professional ranks. Head football coach Joe Walton came to the Colonials after 35 years of National Football League experience, including seven years as the head coach of the New York Jets. Alongside Walton is another former NFL alum in John Banaszak, who was promoted to assistant head coach in the spring of 2008. Banaszak, the former head coach at Washington & Jefferson College, was a member of Pittsburgh Steelers when the team won Super Bowls X, XIII and XIV. Former Colonial men’s soccer head coach John Kowalski also worked as the head coach for the Pittsburgh Spirit of the Major Indoor Soccer League, the Tampa Bay Mutiny of the MLS and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds of the A-League. He has come full circle, as he is now head coach of the Colonial women’s team, a program that began in 1992.

From the time he took over the men’s soccer program at Robert Morris University, head coach Bill Denniston needed just four years to take the program from three wins to a regular-season Northeast Conference championship. Entering his 13th season in 2009, Denniston is looking to take his team back to the top of the conference standings in even less time. The Colonials struggled to a 2-14-3 mark in 2008, a blip on an otherwise steady heading for the team under the tutelage of Denniston. Thelasttimehisteamfinishedwitharecordunder .500 was in 2004. The following season, the Colonials went 11-8-1 and took the Northeast Conference title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. In 2006, the Colonials bounced back from a 0-1-2starttotheconferencescheduletofinish4-1-1overthefinalsixregularseasongamesand earn the fourth seed in the conference postseason. Robert Morris lost to eventual NEC ChampionMonmouthinthesemifinals, endingwhat was a remarkable late season surge into the playoffs. The 2005 Colonials claimed their third NEC

Championship and second under the guidance of Denniston. That team finished 11-8-4,the most wins for the program during the Denniston era.

In 2001, Denniston earned NEC Coach of the Year honors after leading the Colonials to their first NEC regular-season championship since1996. He followed that up by taking RMU to the NEC tournament once again in 2002. In addition to returning the Colonials to prominence in the NEC, Denniston has helped his players move on to the professional ranks. Under his tutelage, 10 players have made their way into the professional ranks, including 2005 graduate Joe Di Buono who was drafted by both the Montreal Impact of the USL and the Cleveland Force of the MISL. In 12 years as head coach of the Colonials, Denniston has compiled an overall record of 80-121-28. Prior to his stint with Robert Morris, Denniston served three years as the head coach for Alderson Broaddus (W. Va.) College, guiding the Battlers to a record of 37-17-4 and national rankings in each of his three years. His 1995squadfinishedwithanationalrankingofNo.11, thefirst year the schoolparticipatedin Division II athletics, and for those efforts he was named the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. While with Alderson Broaddus, Denniston also served as assistant athletic director. Before becoming head coach of the Battlers, Denniston spent four seasons as assistant men’s soccer coach at Bethany (W.Va.) College. In each of his four years there, Bethany finishedwithanational rankingofNo.14orhigher in Division III, including a No. 2 ranking in 1993. In his 12 years as an assistant and head coach, Denniston has helped to develop 51 all-conference selections, five AcademicAll-Americans, four conference MVPs and four All-Americans. A 1983 graduate of Bethany with a degree in physical education, Denniston was a four-year All-Presidents Athletic Conference selection and a three-year All-American. He was also named the PAC’s most valuable player in 1980, was captain of the 1982 Bison squad thatwasanationalfinalistandwasaSeniorBowl nominee in 1982. 2009 OUTLOOK

The last time the Robert Morris University men’s soccer team finished a season with a record under .500, they bounced back the following season to win the Northeast Conference Tournament and earn a berth in the NCAA Tournament. That was in 2005. After posting a 2-14-3 mark in 2008, head coach Bill Denniston and the 2009 version of the Colonials are looking for a similar turnaround. Six starters will be back in uniform with the squad welcoming back a total of 14 letterwinners. To offset the loss of nearly half his starters, Denniston has brought in 13 newcomers. The Colonials will have to find a way to score this season after tallying just 13 goals in 19 games last year. Meanwhile, at the other end of the field, three freshmen goalkeepers will be competing for the starting job left vacant by the graduation of Matt Felice, one of the best netminders in the history of the program and a four-year starter. Five players are listed as forwards this season with sophomores David Torrance and Francis Bowman the lone returners at that position. Torrance held a starting role for most of the season, scoring a goal and setting up two others. Bowman saw plenty of action off the bench, giving the Colonials a change of pace. Freshmen Dominic Mascia, Frank LaManna and Derek Stein will compete for time up top

as well. Mascia was an all-league selection last season after leading his squad with 10 goals. LaManna, who may also play in the midfield, led Chartiers Valley with 13 goals en route to All-WPIAL honors while Stein was a two-time all-section pick. Senior captain Sean Riley and classmate Kyle McIvor will be looked upon to bring stability and experience to the team’s midfield. Riley roams the center of the field, using his tremendous endurance to provide both an extra attacker and an extra defender. He led the team with three goals last season, finishing with seven points. McIvor has roamed the outside midfield for the past three years, tallying a goal and assist as a junior. He will need to help create more opportunities from the outside with the graduation of some key playmakers. Tyler Solis is also a senior who stepped into a starter’s role last year. Generally found on the outside of the midfield, he can also be pressed into the center or forward duty after scoring two goals last season. Junior Neil Shaffer has held a center midfield spot since his freshman campaign and will be asked to provide some scoring punch in addition to helping on the defensive side of the ball. Sophomore Matt Sheibley was a pleasant surprise for Robert Morris last season, earning a starting spot for the team. He saw significant time at both forward and midfield, finishing third on the team in scoring with five points as a freshman. Sophomore Dan Braun saw a

large chunk of time on defense, starting in 12 games, while Matt Griffin had limited playing time in the midfield. Sophomore transfer Shane Beharry along with freshmen Niko Corado and Michael Jones will look to earn time in the midfield as well. Defensively, the Colonials welcome back sophomores Max Shinsky, Tyler Gardner and Chase Raymond along with junior Justin Turnley. Shinsky and Gardner each locked down starting jobs as rookies, learning while on the job and bringing that new-found knowledge into their sophomore campaigns. Turnley returns to the team after sitting out the 2008 season. As a freshman, he started 13 games on the backline for the Colonials. Freshmen Sam Colosimo, Kyle Macauley and Andy Correa bring depth and talent to the defensive corps. In goal, three rookies – Toba Bolaji, Nick Barber and Andrew Gagliardi – will battle for the starting position. Bolaji led Maple High School in Ontario to the York Region Championship as a senior, garnering most valuable players for the squad in both his junior and senior seasons. Barber recorded 12 shutouts in 15 starts as a senior while earning the starting spot for Western United, one of the top club teams in Massachusetts. Gagliardi was an All-WPIAL selection as a senior, garnering 340 saves and 15 shutouts during his career at Belle Vernon.

The Robert Morris University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is not all about winning on the field or on the court.Academics is as much a triumph as the athletic competitions themselves. Robert Morris University is committed to the total development of its student-athletes. The 2008-09 academic year followed the trend set before it as 67 Colonials were named to the Northeast Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll, 31 to the NEC Winter Academic Honor Roll and 95 to the NEC Spring Academic Honor Roll. A trio of individuals were also named Student-Athlete of the Year by the NEC in their respective sports, as Alaina Gibson garnered the honor in volleyball, Adam Lawrence in football and Mary Kate Egan in women’s lacrosse. In July of 2009, senior Tara Maxwell of thewomen’s track andfield teambecamethe second Colonial in three years to be named the NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Sponsored by the league’s faculty athletic representatives, the award is bestowed annually upon the NEC male and female student-athlete who has exhausted his or her eligibility, graduated and has posted the highest cumulative grade point average at the conclusion of the academic year. Maxwell carried a 3.99 grade point average as a manufacturing engineering major throughout her four years at Robert Morris and was one of three NEC female student-athletes to earn the award in 2009, joining Kathleen Henry of the Sacred Heart cross country program and Erin Reifsteck of the Saint Francis (Pa.) field hockey team.Maxwell joins former Colonial volleyball player Lisa Jaszka (2003-06) as a winner of the award, as Jaszka was honored in 2007 for owning a perfect 4.0 GPA as an elementary education major. Additionally in 2008-09, Robert Morris had eight student-athletes named to their respective ESPN  The  Magazine District II Academic All-America Teams by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Joining Gibson (volleyball), Lawrence (football) and Egan (at-large for

both field hockey and women’s lacrosse)were Amanda Graham (volleyball), Mark Szymanski (football), Annie Dubovec (softball), Brooke Panepinto (softball) and Susan Perich (softball). In all, 15 of the University’s 23 squads finished with team GPA’s of 3.0 or higherin the 2008-09 academic year, and nearly 65 percent of all RMU’s 550 student-athletes posted a 3.0 or higher grade point average. Since 1988, a total of 15 Robert Morris student-athletes have been named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year in their respective sports, including former Colonials Jeff Witmyer (2004-08) and Jim Baughman (1996-2000) of the RMU track and fieldteam. Witmyer was a three-time selection, earning the NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year after the 2007 indoor season and the honor forbothindoorandoutdoortrackandfieldin 2008. Baughman was awarded the 1999 NEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year for indoor trackandfieldandwasbestowedthehonoragainin2000foroutdoortrackandfield. Robert Morris has also placed 36 student-athletes on ESPN  The Magazine District II Academic All-America Teams since 1992, including 13 individuals that were honored in consecutive years. Football has led the way with 10 student-athletes named to the ESPN  The  Magazine District II Academic All-America Team, followed by softball with eight honorees and volleyball with six. CoSIDA’s District II covers Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The reason for RMU’s success in the classroom is simple. Colonial student-athletes receive the very best support when it comes to their academic curriculum. Evening study halls are monitored by the department’s student services personnel, and academic counseling is available from both the athletic department and the University’senrollmentmanagementoffice. Graduation is the goal, and Robert Morris University strives to ensure its student-athletes attain that lofty goal.

During the 2005-06 academic year, Robert Morris placed a total of nine student-athletes covering six sports on ESPN  The  Magazine Academic All-America District II teams, the most in school history. Coleman has overseen the development of a new Robert Morris logo and mascot aswellasthelaunchingofthenewofficialwebsite for Colonial athletics at www.rmucolonials.com. Coleman also hired Mike Rice as the seventh basketball coach in RMU Division I history as well as the additionoffieldhockeyheadcoachOliviaNetzler. All the while, Coleman has built a winning softball program at Robert Morris over the past 19 years. During that period, RMU has won four Northeast Conference regular-season championships and six NEC Tournament titles. In 2005, Robert Morris finished with a league record of 17-3 toclaim the regular-season championship, then swept through the NEC Tournament to claim its sixth title and advance to its firstNCAATournament. “As the longest-tenured coach at Robert Morris University, Craig has proven with his softball teams what it means to have a consistent and successful program both on thefieldandintheclassroom,”saidformerRobert Morris University President Edward A. Nicholson, Ph.D. “His successful record will be an asset as he takes over as our new athletic director.”

Likewise, Coleman believes the timing was perfect for him to lead the athletic program at Robert Morris University. “The time was right for me to make this professional change,” Coleman said at the time of his hiring. “I have always had a passion for athletics and for 15 years I held management positions in health care. As the athletic director, I can now merge these two positions into one that really excites me.” From 1988 through 2005, Coleman worked as an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School Medicine. From 1983 to 1989, he was the attending psychiatrist at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh. Coleman earned his medical degree from the The Pennsylvania State University School of Medicine in Hershey in 1983. In 1979, he earned an undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. At RMU, Coleman turned a perennial

losing softball program into NEC champions. Prior to his arrival as head coach in 1991, the Colonials posted a record of 19-45 in the previous three seasons. During his 19 years as head coach, the Colonials have posted an overall record of 463-413-4 (.528), including a record of 198-78-2 (.716) in conference play. In 2007, Coleman garnered his 400th career victory in game one of doubleheader sweep of Akron thanks to a 3-2 victory. He guided the Colonials to an overall record of 119-62 (.657) and four conference championshipsinhisfirstfouryears,andin1994,histeamreceivedthefirstnationalranking in RMU history – regardless of sport – when his team was ranked as high as No. 23 in the USA Today / National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). His players include 11 District II Academic All-Americans, two NEC Spring Scholar-Athletes for softball (Stephani Ehrenfeld in 2000 and Nicole Aloi in 2001) and numerous NEC All-Academic Honor Roll selections. During the 1999-2000 academic year, RMU achieved the second-highest cumulative team grade point average among all NCAA Division I softball programs according to the NFCA, finishingwitha3.409gradepointaverage,behind only Louisiana Tech (3.571). Prior to his appointment as head coach at Robert Morris, Coleman compiled a record of 359-158 (.694) in 16 seasons coaching summer softball, mostly with the Pittsburgh Patriots 18-and-under traveling fast-pitch team from 1986-91.
