Th e St. Scholastica Saints women’s volley-ball team saw the highs and lows of a sea-son in 2008, but ended the season strong, fi ghting their way into the UMAC Cham-pionship game, where they fell to the one UMAC team they could not beat last sea-son, Northwestern.Coach Dana Moore has consistently led the Saints to strong seasons, and 2008’s success should be an indication that, despite a large amount of turnover in the roster, we should expect nothing less than continued success from her team. The Veterans…Th e Saints will be missing eight players from last year’s squad, including a great se-nior class which made up fi ve of the team’s six starters.Rightside hitter Megan Baartman (Sr.-An-dover, Minn.) and middle blockers Taryn McCue (Sr.-Side Lake, Minn./Hibbing HS)and Rebecca Udermann (Sr.-Rosemount, Minn.) make up this year’s senior class. Baartman started 21 matches last season while the others combined for six starts, but their strong leadership goes beyond what’s seen on the court, and they will all have plenty of additional time on the court in 2009.Defensive specialist Molly Roith (Jr.-Plymouth, Minn.) played in 14 matches last season while spelling then-senior Cassie Roden at the libero position.Last season’s freshman class did not see much action, but Nikki Hughes (So.-Lake Nebaga-mon, Wis./Northwestern HS) will be return-ing with one season under her belt which will undoubtedly help the Saints in 2009.The Newcomers…Coach Moore has a large recruting class joining the team, representing schools from all over Minnesota. Th e newcomers will play multiple roles for the Saints and try to fi ll the void left by eight players who will not return in 2009.Taylor Tyllia (Fr.-Duluth, Minn./East HS), who will also play basketball for the Saints, was an Academic All-State honoree in both basketball and volleyball. She also partici-pated in two volleyball all-star games while with the Greyhounds.Alyssa McDonald (Fr.-Chisholm, Minn), a setter/outside hitter, was an all-conference selection in 2006, ’07, and ’08. She is a two-time member of the All-Duluth News Tri-bune team and honorable mention all-area

in 2006. She was part of the Section 7A championship team in 2007, which led to a fourth place fi nish at state. Paige Hardy (Fr.-Hibbing, Minn.), an out-side hitter, was named All-Hibbing Daily Tribune and All-Duluth News Tribune this past season. She also was an honorable mention all-area choice and an all-confer-ence selection. Cortney Rykken (Fr.-Babbitt, Minn.), a set-ter/right side, was the Mesabi Daily News Prep Athlete of the Year and was a three-time all-conference selection. Sarah Kurtovich (Fr.-Andover, Minn.), a setter, was Academic All-State on two oc-casions. She was honorable mention all-conference in 2007 and 2008. She was part of two Andover state teams that fi nished second and fourth. Rounding out the class are four outside hit-ters. Amber Hogen (Fr.-Osceola, Minn.) received all-conference accolades in 2007. Jenny Kienzle (Fr.-Hermantown, Minn.), who also plays as a defensive specialist, was part of the Hermantown team that captured the Lake Superior Conference this past sea-son. Brittany Oakman (Fr.-Virgina, Minn.) was all-conference in 2008. Joining them are Emily Lindquist (Fr.-Detroit Lakes, Minn.) and Megan Windschitl (Fr.-Sartell, Minn./Cathedral HS).Th is young group will join the returners to play a very tough schedule in 2009, but the mixture of young talent and veteran skill should lead to success for the Saints this season. The Schedule…Once again, the Saints’ schedule is stacked with the best teams in the midwest. includ-ing seven games against WIAC schools, three against the MIAC, and two schools from Illinois along with their regular 14-game UMAC schedule.Th e fi rst half of the season will be entirely non-conference, highlighted by matches against Wis.-Eau Claire and Gustavus Adolphus, who were both ranked in the fi nal AVCA Division-III Coaches’ Poll of 2008. Th e Saints fell to the Gusties last sea-son, but CSS defeated them as recently as 2006. Wis.-Eau Claire, on the other hand, is undefeated against CSS, who they have not faced since 2005. Th e Saints will look to change that fortune this year.

One team the Saints are very familiar with is Wis.-Superior, who CSS will face twice this season, once on Homecoming weekend. Th e Saints defeated the ’Jackets 3-1 last season, and will hope that continues in 2009.Th e Saints’ longest road trip of the year will be to Bloomington, Ill. to take on Illinois-Wesleyan and Webster University. CSS is 1-2 all-time agaisnt Wesleyan, but have never faced Webster in the history of the two pro-grams. Illinois-Wesleyan qualifi ed for the NCAA Central Regional last season.Th e Saints went 3-1 against the WIAC, but with additional matches against Wis.-Stout, River Falls, and Stevens Point, who the Saints are a combined 6-14 against, it will not be easy to see continued success.Rounding out the non-conference sched-ule are matches against the NAIA’s Judson University, Augsburg and Hamline of the MIAC, and one opponent to be deter-mined.Highlighting the conference schedule for the Saints is the home opener, which will take place 24 days into the season on Sept. 25 when the Saints face off against Martin Luther just one day before Homecoming Saturday, when they will face both Bethany Lutheran and Wis.-Superior. One week later, the Saints play a match against Northwestern. Th ese fi rst three matches will be a great barometer of the success that CSS should expect as they were, undoubtedly, the toughest three UMAC op-ponents for CSS last season.Th e Saints then have two home games in four weeks agaisnt Minn.-Morris and Pre-sentation before closing out the season with four straight home games against North-land, Crown, and Northwestern.Th e season ends with one last non-confer-ence match-up against Wis.-Stevens Point on Halloween. The Final Word…Th e Saints should qualify for the UMAC tournament, which takes place November 4 and 7 this season. With half the team expe-riencing the playoff atmosphere last season, this may fi nally be the year that an experi-enced squad pulls through and earns Coach Moore her third UMAC Championship.

Th e Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) began in 1972 as the Twin Rivers Conference and was renamed to its current title in 1983. Seventeen schools have been a part of the UMAC over the past 30
years, and the conference currently has eight full members and four associ-ate members in football.Th e Upper Midwest Athletic Conference has been successful not only on the regional level in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), but also on the national level as the league has been well-repre-sented at numerous national tournaments.Starting in 2010-11, the UMAC will be considered an offi cial National Col-legiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division-III conference, meaning the conference tournaments will feature an automatic bid to the NCAA re-gional or national tournament. Several participating institutions, including CSS, already boast NCAA Div.-III status.UMAC Mission/Vision Statement“Th e Upper Midwest Athletic Conference shall provide for its member in-stitutions opportunity to be recognized in its region as institutions which are in the forefront of academic excellence and athletic competitiveness.”UMAC Philosophy StatementTh e Upper Midwest Athletic Conference is a group of strong, yet diverse, colleges. We will strive to enrich the college careers of student athletes by off ering a range of highly competitive amateur athletic opportunities. Our primary focus is on student athletes, with an uncompromising commit-ment to athletic equity and to the primacy of student academic progress. We will seek to enhance the overall richness of our collegiate programs, for all students, faculty, staff , and alumni, by supporting teams who will consis-tently demonstrate the values of hard work, community service, and good sportsmanship. We believe a strong intercollegiate athletics conference can also serve the economic and entertainment needs of our communities by providing consistently high quality exciting sports options. Th e UMAC fully endorses the NCAA Division-III philosophy, including the central-policy making role of fully engaged college presidents and Chancellors.

Th e Jerome Kruse Memorial Award was created in honor of Mr. Jerome Kruse, the long-time athletic direc-tor of Northwestern (Wis.) College and later Martin Luther College. Mr. Kruse’s life ended early, and the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) created the award to honor his dedica-tion to the conference and its student-athletes. Th e annual award travels to the college that earns the most points, accumulated by the place-fi nishes of the college’s athletic teams in the fi nal standings of the 16 conference-spon-sored sports. In 2006 and 2007, St. Scholastica won back-to-back Kruse Awards, their fi rst outright victory since 1998 and fi rst overall since 2000. Th e Saints won eight regular season conference titles in 2006 and nine in ’07 to claim their second straight title. In 2008, the Saints fell just eight points short of their third straight Kruse Award while getting beat out by perennial contend-er Northwestern College.Th e 2009 school year saw the Saints claim ten of the 16 regular season con-ference championships – including all six of the Spring sports – but they were still edged out by Northwestern by just one half of a point. Northwestern was propelled to victory thanks to regular season championships in Volleyball, Football, and Women’s Golf and seven second-place fi nishes.Th e second-straight near-victory by the Saints is even more remarkable given the fact that CSS does not yet fi eld teams in men’s or women’s golf, compromising the points formula. CSS will look for continued success in men’s and women’s soccer, women’s cross country, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s track and fi eld, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball, and soft ball – all of which won their regular season championship in 2008-09 as well as the emergence of young football and women’s basketball teams as they look for their sixth Jerome Kruse Award in 2010.
