Head coach Dave Reyelts enters his 10th season at the helm of Th e College of St. Scholastica’s wom-en’s soccer team. He is the winningest coach in program history with 128 wins at the college. His 2008 team again claimed the UMAC Regular Season and the Postseason UMAC Tourney Title with a perfect 14-0 record in the conference. He led his team to a second straight NCAA Division III national tournament. His teams have won either the regular season or conference tournament title in each of the past nine years. Th e ’06 Saints hosted the UMAC Tournament as the top seed but fell in the champion-ship game in double overtime.A fi ve-time winner of the UMAC Coach-of-the-Year award, Reyelts has compiled an overall record of 128-60-9 since taking over the program in 2000. Th at includes a stretch of 44 consecutive wins in regular season UMAC play including the fi nal two conference games of the 2003 schedule.Under Reyelts’ tutelage, the Saints have produced one NAIA All-American, 19 NAIA Honorable Mention All-Americans, an NAIA Region-III Player-of-the-Year, four UMAC Players-of-the-Year, 22 NAIA Region-III All-Region players, and 46 UMAC All-Conference performers. A proponent of excellence in the classroom as well as on the soccer pitch, 47 of Reyelts’ players

have earned Academic All-UMAC honors while nine have been named to an NAIA All-American Scholar-Athlete Team. During his playing days, Reyelts—also an assistant with the hockey program and men’s and women’s track teams—was a goalkeeper on St. Scholastica men’s soccer team (1995-97). Th e Duluth, Minn., native holds records for career saves and saves percentage for the Saints. Nimble outside the keepers’ box, he was also a hard-checking forward on the Saints hockey team during those years. Coach Reyelts owns a lengthy resume of coaching positions in the Northland having coached hockey, soft ball, and track and fi eld at the youth, high school, and college levels. In the summer months Reyelts continues to work with the local Gitchi Gummi Soccer Club.Reyelts is married to Ann, a Duluth/Superior teacher. Th ey are the parents of 5-year old Kennan and 3-year old Andrew.

Coach Kresky enters his sixth season with the Saints. He was the CSS women’s assistant coach in 2001 and 2002 and returned to work with the women’s team in 2007 aft er spending three seasons as the head coach of the Duluth Denfeld High School girl’s team.A two year captain and four year player for the Saints men’s pro-gram, Kresky also has valuable on-fi eld experience. During his

playing years from 1997-2000, the midfi elder was named UMAC All-

Conference Honorable Mention (1999) and All-Conference Second Team (2000). An ’01 CSS graduate, Kresky earned his Master’s of Sci-ence degree in Exercise Physiology and Cardiac Rehabilita-tion from the College during his fi rst coaching stint with the women’s team.Kresky is also employed with United Health Care in Duluth.

MacLean begins his fi ft h season as the assistant men’s and women’s soccer coach. A local graduate from Duluth East High School, MacLean played four years with the Greyhound varsity program but suff ered a career-ending inju-ry following his senior campaign.Morgan stepped across the side-line directly into a coaches role aft er high school as he joined the highly successful Greyhound

girls’ program where he led the ninth grade squad for three years

while assisting with the Varsity and Junior Varsity teams. He then coached in the Marshall School boy’s program for a season before joining St. Scholastica the following year.MacLean leads the Saints JV program along with helping both the men’s and women’s programs with recruiting. In the summer, he coaches for the Gitchi Gummi Soccer Club.

Lahti returns for her second season as an assistant to Coach Reyelts’ Saints.Like much of the staff , Lahti comes to the coaching staff aft er a four-year playing career at the college in which she earned plen-ty of honors as a defender.Th e Duluth native is a two-team All-American Honorable Men-tion on the Saints’ 2004 and 2005 NAIA Regional Tournament

team. She was also named to the all-region fi rst team both seasons.

Lammi returns for her fourth season on the sidelines as a coach for the Saints. Following a stellar career in which she set nearly every goalkeeping record for the Saints, Lammi made the transition from player to coach where she lends her talents to work with the team’s keepers.Kristin was a two-time NAIA Honorable Mention All-American, three-time NAIA All-Region-III team member, and a three-time All-UMAC performer. She was also

an NAIA All-American Scholar-Athlete as well as Academic All-UMAC in both ‘04 and ‘05.Kristin lives in Duluth with her son Evan.

Injuries hampered the career of fi rst-year graduate assistant Alyssa Wilson during her three-year career with the Saints, but her intelligence and skill made assigning her to coaching duties an easy decision for head Coach Dave Reyelts.Wilson is in her fi rst year in the College’s Occupational Th erapy Master’s program.

Coach Dave Reyelts had one of his most successful campaigns in 2008 as the Saints earned their second straight trip to the NCAA Regional tournament. Th e team also set a new program record for wins in a second with 20 while having just three losses and will return the vast major-ity of the key players with one major sub-traction -- all-time St. Scholastica leading scorer Robin Johnson (’08). Th e Saints will be looking for people to step up on off ense, but much of a strong defensive corps re-turns, so 2009 looks to be another success-ful season for CSS.Th e Veterans…Ten seniors return for CSS, all of which have experience starting for the Saints, but CSS is far from top-heavy as several under-classmen have and will continue to contrib-ute mightly for Coach Reyelts’ club.Jen Krokum (Sr.-Duluth, Minn./East HS) has continued to improve over her career for CSS and had a breakout season in 2008, scoring 16 goals and proving herself a reli-able scoring option for Coach Reyelts. Los-ing the team’s leading scorer for the past four seasons in Johnson, the Saints will need continued production from Krokum to stay strong on off ense.Midfi elder Angie Groh (Sr.-Andover, Minn./St. Francis HS) will get more touches in 2009 in addition to Krokum. She has been consistent for the Saints in her career, scoring at least fi ve goals in each of the past three seasons. Defenders Abby Arrowsmith (Sr.-Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine HS), Amanda Hakala (Sr.-Duluth, Minn./Central HS), Cortney McKenzie (Sr.-Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) and Ellyn Litecky (Sr.-Duluth, Minn./East HS) all return, as they, along with goaltenders Bailey Mahlum (So.-Bismarck, N.D.) and Erin Olejnicak (So.-Brainerd, Minn.) allowed just 18 goals last season compared to 70 scored by the Saints’ off ense.Rounding out the senior class are versatile midfi elder/defender Beth Flesvig (Sr.-Du-luth, Minn./Proctor HS) and forwards Katie Gaydos (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS)and Melisa Entinger (Mound, Minn./Holy Trinity HS).For underclassmen, the Saints have the aforementioned pair of sophomore goalies

in Mahlum and Olejnicak. At the rate she played in her fi rst 10 appearances, Olejni-cak looks on-pace to shatter records in goals against and save percentage, saving nearly 90% of the shots against her and posting a 0.33 GAA in 2008. Mahlum’s numbers were also impressive as she posted a 1.05 GAA and a 12-2-0 record in the net.Another young defender, Megan Flesvig (So.-Duluth, Minn./Proctor HS) saw signif-cant playing time including a few starts in 2008 and should continue to contribute for CSS.On the off ensive side, the Saints have for-wards Nicole Brandt (Jr.-Rochester, Minn./Lourdes HS) who played in a career-high 21 games in 2008, and pair of sophomores, Bailey Campbell (So.-Clancy, Mont./Hel-ena HS) and Amanda Smerz (So.-Duluth, Minn./East HS) who appeared in 17 games each last season.Th e Saints had six other members of last year’s recruiting class see action in 2008, so Coach Reyelts has plenty of reason to expect continued success, especially taken into consideration the deep freshman class he will bring to CSS for 2009 to join them.Th e Newcomers…Coach Reyelts has brought in student ath-letes from throughout the northland from Duluth to the Twin Cities and even Fargo, N.D. From the Twin Cities metro, Coach Reyelts has recruited two midfi elders and a for-ward. Anna Valerius was a member of the All-State Tournament Team as well as a three-time All-Conference selection for her St. Michael’s-Albertville team and also received the Minnesota State High School League Academic Achievement Award in 2008.Shannon Lee (Fr.-Fargo, N.D./Fargo South HS) and Julianne Levich (Fr.-Fargo, N.D./Fargo South HS) were both part of three state championship teams while starting for Fargo South. Lee, a midfi elder/forward, and Levich, a defender, were both captains during their senior season.Andrea Beatt (Fr.-Maple Grove, Minn.) comes to the Saints to compete for time at the forward position. She fi nished her prep career as the third leading scorer in school history and played on two teams appearing in the section fi nals.

(cont’d from pg. 10) Stillwater’s Kaylee Gom-bold (Fr.-Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS)earned all-conference honors as a captain in her senior year as a forward.Additionally, Coach Reyelts has seven lo-cal products joining his squad for 2009. Joey Moore (Fr.-Duluth, Minn./East HS)joins the team as a defender who played on two Minn. State Tournament teams. If the name seems familiar, it is because she is the daughter of Saints head volleyball coach Dana Moore. Joining her is a former Duluth East teammate, Megan Stingle (So.-Duluth, Minn.), who is a two-time Duluth News Tribune Player of the Year as well as a three-time all-area selection.

Cassandra Alverez (Fr.-Two Harbors, Minn.) joins the Saints as a multi-year start-er for her Two Harbors Agttes during her prep career, and midfi elder Tessa Jacobson(Fr.-Evelth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert) brings six years of varsity soccer experience to the pro-gram. Hannah Roy (Fr.-Cloquet, Minn.) led her team in scoring in 2008 while also being named to her second Duluth News Tribune All-Area team and being named All-Lake Superior Conference as a forward. Th eresa Magliano (Fr.-Duluth, Minn./Den-feld HS) rounds out the class as a three-year starter and 2008 All-Lake Superior Confer-ence selection. (cont’d on page 13)

Th e Schedule…(cont’d from pg. 11)Th e Saints kick off their season with a trip to London, England which will include exhibition games against some of the best talent from across the pond, including the London Academy team and Chester City.Upon returning stateside, the attention shift s to key opponents in the midwest regional, starting with the home opener against Wis.-Superior. Th e two teams have not met since 2002, but CSS is 7-0-0 against the Yellow-jackets.From there, CSS takes on Macalester Col-lege. Th e Saints defeated the lady Scots in the second game of last season by a 3-1 score.Wis.-River Falls has proven to be a tough op-ponent for the Saints over the years, with a scoreless tie and a Saints’ 3-2 overtime victory between the teams in the past two seasons. For the second straight season, the Saints will travel to Moorhead, Minn. for the Cob-ber Classic. Th is year, they take on the host Cobbers, who narrowly defeated the Saints last season, as well as Principia College, who St. Scholastica has never faced before.Rounding out the non-conference schedule is Augsburg College, who handed St. Scho-lastiuca one of two regular season losses last season by a 1-0 score. Th e Saints will be look-ing for payback in Minneapolis on Oct. 7.St. Scholastica has had no problems captur-ing the UMAC regular season championship the past few seasons, but slowly, the fi eld has been catching up, and the race for the title

may be closer than ever in 2009.Th rough their fi rst 13 match-ups with con-ference opponents in 2008, the Saints won by at least two goals in each game, but in the regular season fi nale, Northland held them to just one goal and the Saints had to rely on strong defense to pick up the victory. In the UMAC postseason tournament, the tough play continued as Minn.-Morris and Northwestern both took the Saints to the wire in one-goal games. Th e young Mor-ris squad will return a large portion of their team and Northwestern has been a perennial challenger to the Saints, so the challenges will continue for St. ScholasticaTh e home opener, as stated, is Sept. 1 against Wis.-Superior, with the road opener just three days later at Macalester College. Homecom-ing weekend is Sept. 25-26, with the Saints hosting Martin Luther and Bethany Lutheran in conference play. Th e Final Word…Th e UMAC has gotten stronger and stron-ger, and the St. Scholastica Saints will have to fi ght harder than ever if they hope to win the regular season championship, and contend for an NCAA tournament bid.

Th e Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) began in 1972 as the Twin Rivers Conference and was renamed to its current title in 1983. Seventeen schools have been a part of the UMAC over the past 30

years, and the conference currently has eight full members and four associ-ate members in football.Th e Upper Midwest Athletic Conference has been successful not only on the regional level in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), but also on the national level as the league has been well-repre-sented at numerous national tournaments.Starting in 2010-11, the UMAC will be considered an offi cial National Col-legiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division-III conference, meaning the conference tournaments will feature an automatic bid to the NCAA re-gional or national tournament. Several participating institutions, including CSS, already boast NCAA Div.-III status.UMAC Mission/Vision Statement“Th e Upper Midwest Athletic Conference shall provide for its member in-stitutions opportunity to be recognized in its region as institutions which are in the forefront of academic excellence and athletic competitiveness.”UMAC Philosophy StatementTh e Upper Midwest Athletic Conference is a group of strong, yet diverse, colleges. We will strive to enrich the college careers of student athletes by off ering a range of highly competitive amateur athletic opportunities. Our primary focus is on student athletes, with an uncompromising commit-ment to athletic equity and to the primacy of student academic progress. We will seek to enhance the overall richness of our collegiate programs, for all students, faculty, staff , and alumni, by supporting teams who will consis-tently demonstrate the values of hard work, community service, and good sportsmanship. We believe a strong intercollegiate athletics conference can also serve the economic and entertainment needs of our communities by providing consistently high quality exciting sports options. Th e UMAC fully endorses the NCAA Division-III philosophy, including the central-policy making role of fully engaged college presidents and Chancellors.

Th e Jerome Kruse Memorial Award was created in honor of Mr. Jerome Kruse, the long-time athletic direc-tor of Northwestern (Wis.) College and later Martin Luther College. Mr. Kruse’s life ended early, and the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) created the award to honor his dedica-tion to the conference and its student-athletes. Th e annual award travels to the college that earns the most points, accumulated by the place-fi nishes of the college’s athletic teams in the fi nal standings of the 16 conference-spon-sored sports. In 2006 and 2007, St. Scholastica won back-to-back Kruse Awards, their fi rst outright victory since 1998 and fi rst overall since 2000. Th e Saints won eight regular season conference titles in 2006 and nine in ’07 to claim their second straight title. In 2008, the Saints fell just eight points short of their third straight Kruse Award while getting beat out by perennial contend-er Northwestern College.Th e 2009 school year saw the Saints claim ten of the 16 regular season con-ference championships – including all six of the Spring sports – but they were still edged out by Northwestern by just one half of a point. Northwestern was propelled to victory thanks to regular season championships in Volleyball, Football, and Women’s Golf and seven second-place fi nishes.Th e second-straight near-victory by the Saints is even more remarkable given the fact that CSS does not yet fi eld teams in men’s or women’s golf, compromising the points formula. CSS will look for continued success in men’s and women’s soccer, women’s cross country, men’s basketball, men’s and women’s track and fi eld, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball, and soft ball – all of which won their regular season championship in 2008-09 as well as the emergence of young football and women’s basketball teams as they look for their sixth Jerome Kruse Award in 2010.

seasons, as Jen Krokum (Sr.-Duluth, Minn./East HS) broke out in 2008 with 34 points, doubling her output through two seasons. Th e Saints defense, led by Amanda Hakala (Sr.-Duluth, Minn./Central HS) and Ellyn Litecky (Sr.-Duluth, Minn./East HS), allowed just 18 goals on the season, including nine shutouts by goaltenders Bailey Mahlum (So.-Bismarck, N.D.) and Erin Olejnicak (So.-Brainerd, Minn.). Th e frosh combined for a goals against average under one (0.77) and a near-.800 save percentage.Altogether, it added up to the Saints’ fi rst NCAA Central regional ranking -- 12th on Oct. 22 -- and another UMAC regular season championship.Despite some challenges in the postseason tournament, the Saints were able to sweep the UMAC titles for 2008 with a pair of one-goal victories over Minn.-Morris and North-western and earn their second-straight bid to the NCAA Championship.Th e Saints faced off with Carleton College on a cold, wet fi eld in Northfi eld, Minn. in their fi rst round match-up and coud not get their off ense started, mustering two shots against a stout Carleton defense. It, of course, would not be enough. Th e Saints played strong defensively, but the Knights were able to slip two goals past them for the victory.Th e Saints said goodbye to a strong senior class, including Johnson, and midfi elders Kristen Stangel (’08) and Sara Olson (’08). Th e two combined for 28 points in their senior campaigns, and helped lead the Saints to four succesful sea-sons. Olson fi nished 18th on the program’s all-time scoring list with 54 points in three seasons.Th e 2008 season fi nished on a low note, but still with plenty of reason for optimism for the future as 11 freshman each saw plenty of playing time and a junior class of 10 gained another year of experience before moving into the role of seniors for 2009.

Th e 2008 season kicked off on a high note for the Saints, as they edged out a key Central Region rival in Aurora (Ill.) College by a double overtime score of 2-1. It was a start of a series of close games for the cardiac kids, who started the season out 5-0-0 including two more double overtime victo-ries over Wis-River Falls and Wis.-Oshkosh.Th e Saints positioned themselves perfectly aft er fi ve games, the best start in coach Dave Reyelts’ nine-yeer career, but saw their win streak come to an end at home when facing Augsburg College. Th e Saints played the Auggies tough, but weren’t able to solve their goaltender and walked away with their fi rst loss of the season by an 0-1 score. CSS came back three days later and faced another tough opponent in Concordia-Moorhead, and again, were unable to solve the defense and fell for the second straight game at home for the fi rst time since 2003.Coach Reyelts’ squad righted the ship quickly, as three days later, conference play opened with a pair of victories against Northwestern and Crown where CSS outscored their op-ponents 8-1.It would be the fi rst of 14 straight victories for CSS as the Saints went undefeated in conference play including seven wins by at least four goals and ten by at least three.During that time, the Saints saw some record-setting performances, including the pinacle of the career of Robin Johnson (’08), who, aft er four spectacular seasons with the Saints, became the school’s all-time scoring leader with 168 points including 65 goals. Johnson broke the record on Oct. 11 against Martin Luther in the same game that the Saints earned the 200th victory in program history.Earning her spot in the record books, Angie Groh (Sr.-An-dover, Minn.) tied a program single-game record when she earned four assists against Northwestern on Sept. 19.Th e Saints set a team records in wins in a season with 20, as well as tying the record for fewest losses with three.Th e record setters weren’t the only ones having impressive
