educational sheet on patterns/lines over ii-v-i

actually i´m not a big fan of practicing pattern, because if you practice too much patterns

you will also sound as if you have practiced too much patterns!!still i think if you find a creative and "practical" way of practicing them, some could be useful. that´s why i give some examples here.

when i look through books with patterns/lines over a ii-v-i progression i maybe find a line like this:

D.7

G7

 C^7

D.7

and here i find a lot of mistakes or "contraproductive" things in lines like this.I think most books only concentrate on the "right" notes you have to play - but i thinkit is exremly important to use an interesting rhythm from the start on. (so i try to givesome examples where the line starts on an offbeat and also ends on an offbeat to give theline an "up" feeling and also to use some more hip rhythms inbetween:

G7

    C^7

3 3

D.7

an other thing that is mostly ignored in books and schools is - how to play the line.i think it is extremly important to make use of different accents.so practice all lines with different (also unusual) accents.for example:

G7

C^7

3 3

D.7

now don´t learn 1000 of those lines like in many books!!!I think the next step should be that you find the concept behind a line (could be a rhythmical

concept, or a melodical concept) and find similar lines with the same concept.so let´s say for example i take the same rhythm and notes but chance some directions:

G7

  C^7

3

3

D.7

an other version of the line - same intervals, same rhythm - just a little more tripletsbut starting on the 3rd instead of the root:

G7

  C^7

3 3 3

ok, here just some more lines to experiment with (change concepts, chance starting notes, changeaccents,...) also some lines double as fast and also some lines in minor:

always remember:

don´t just play those lines like this!Jazzimprovising is about living and playing at the moment - so just understand

the concepts behind these lines and then improvise your own lines - imrprovisedifferent rhythms, accents, noteconcepts, starting notes of the same line in themoment!!!actually the first line (just eightnotes) would be enough, the rest are justexplanations to help you to improvise.
