5/3/09—It was a beautiful day for baseball as the Tigers opened the 2009 season with an exhibition game
against the Tracy Express at Riverside Park. Former Leavenworth Oriole pitcher, Jason Nachreiner, made his
return to amateur baseball taking the ball for the home team. Each Tiger pitcher had one rough inning that ac-
counted for all the Tracy scoring.
After Nachreiner worked his way out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the first, Ken Sather, making his
Tiger debut, started the bottom of the inning with a walk. Brent Haseleu was hit by a pitch and Brady Schwab
moved the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Matt Baier followed with a base hit to score Sather
and give Springfield a 1-0 lead.
The lead wouldn't last long as the Express worked back-to-back walks to start the second. After a fly out,
Tracy put together a double and a triple and took advantage of a wild pitch to plate four runs. Nachreiner settled
in after the tough second to face just one batter over the minimum during his final 3 1/3 innings of work.
Springfield was able to get at least one runner on base in every inning, but lost two runners who were
thrown out at the plate. The score remained 4-1 until the bottom of the sixth. Dave Groebner worked a one-out
walk. Adam Beers reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to third base on two straight wild pitches. Marty
Brandl brought Beers in to score with a double to right field, cutting the Tracy lead to two.
Schwab took the hill for Springfield in the top of the sixth. He retired five of the first six batters he
faced. The Express were then able to string together three hits including a bases loaded triple to run their tally to
seven. The Tigers took advantage of two Tracy errors in the bottom of the seventh to make the final 7-3.
Marty Brandl led the offense with two hits. Ken Sather, Brent Haseleu, Matt Baier, and Adam Beers
each added a hit to the Tiger attack. Jason Nachreiner took the loss, allowing four runs in 5 innings. Springfield
will open Tomahawk East League play next Sunday when they travel to New Ulm to take on the Brewers at
Johnson Park at 2pm.

Best Part Of Playing Amateur Baseball: The atmosphere of
playing with the greatest guys you've grown up with playing the
game. Playing for your hometown.
Other baseball experience (coaching, other teams): Played two years with RCTC, Helped Coach
Legion Baseball
Most Memorable Game, At Any Level, You've Been A Part Of : '07 playoff run
Baseball Rule, At Any Level, You'd Like To See Changed: If any, possibly the intentional walk rule.
It is part of the game now where it can benefit both sides but, why in a clutch game when a pitcher is
facing a team's good hitter do they get the option to get around him. It could be that moment that
everyone dreams of, getting that clutch hit, and you get pitched around.
Favorite MLB Team: Minnesota Twins, Milwaukee Brewers, Atlanta Braves
Favorite Baseball Player Of All Time: Cal Ripken Jr., George Brett, Rickey Henderson
Thoughts On The Home Run Chris Sturm Gave Up At St. Stephen: I'm going to go ahead and say
it was all pitcher generated power after speaking with Chris later in the day. I quote, "Baier, you got to
admit, I throw pretty f'ing hard!"
Parting Thoughts: "Every day is a new opportunity. You can build on yesterday's success, or put its
failures behind and start over again. That's the way life is, with a new game every day, and that's the
way baseball is."
P.S. Another reason why Ryan Sturm yet amazes us all...He's the only guy I know that doesn't workout
like a maniac and can get an arm the size of Hulk Hogan's!
Memories…
• Bryant Krebs portraying the ultimate hangover
against Essig
• Matt Tews showcasing his Paul Allen (the voice of
the MN Vikings) voice
• Brandon and Katie's wedding
• Finding out Andrew Moritz's hate for Kenny
Chesney
• Being told that I can beat Schwab in a foot race
• Chris Sturm's foot problem
• Ryan Sturm describing how he feels about being
put back on his parents' voicemail
• Soliciting Marty in between innings to buy life
insurance from me
#21 Jake Miesen
Another fun and eventful season, that's for sure. Some ran-
dom things that stick out in my memory:
• Jake's stellar pitching performances.
• Schwabie, while back peddling, decides to make a gracious
backwards summersault with bases loaded in Hanska.
• Davis tearing up the third base line with line drives during
the home run derby.
• Marc and the numerous plays he makes.
• Ryan Sturm making the few appearances he could with his
summer commitments and doing what he does best. He
also let you know he did well by repeating, "I Produce."
• Willie (when he wasn't playin’ Mike Scioscia) being the
gamer he is and simply, “Going right after ‘em,” as Miesen
would say.
• We had the veterans play with us when they could which
always keeps the games being played right.
• We also had some young guys step up and get some good
experience for the years to come!
• And of course, all of Chris Sturm's comments!
I can't wait for the next season to start and I hope all that can
make it again do! See ya at the ballpark!

Memories:
Brandon and Katie's wedding. More importantly, Davis
not scheduling a game for the next afternoon; clutch.
Bobby boy taking one deep at Gibbon.
Camping was a great idea. Who knew it was going to be
35 degrees and raining? Also known as freezing at Sartell.
The disappointment in everyone's eyes, especially Mi-
esen's, when we learned that St. Stephen was not roasting
an entire pig.
Hitting a walk off against Stark in the playoffs.
#22 Matt Tews
• Schwabie looking like Greg Maddox on the hill against
Tracy.
• Fink’s homer in Gibbon
• Resuming a game in St. Stephen on a cold, wet, Sunday
morning at 10am.
• Willie showing up after coaching a VFW game and
single-handedly taking over the game.
• The 12 inning battle in Lamberton
• Beating St. James on back-to-back days
• Rain in the playoffs, especially the team effort to get
the field in shape after the rain and hail in Springfield
during Game 2.
• All the fun in the dugout!
• Playing with a great group of guys—priceless.
#11 Marty Brandl
It's worth driving 3 hours after a work shift ending at
12:30am on Sunday mornings to play one, maybe two games
with a team that is a blast to compete with.
As with every summer I spend hours laughing at the stories
and jokes told, some at each other's expense, before, during,
and after each game.
Miesen's choice of clothing during pregame bp - white shoes
(with or without socks), white pants (that are unlikely to reach
the tops of his shoes leaving a portion of his white legs ex-
posed), white shirt, and the team hat.
