4 2009 Celebrations Of Summer
Robinson Communications is pleased to bring you this annual guide of local festivals, fairs, and family fun things to do in and around your own backyard. This year we’re featuring activities that nurture the community, the neighborhood and the street where you live. Most are free and that’s a really good thing, especially now with the economy trying to sort itself out. I’m a huge believer in making lemonade out of lemons...who knows, maybe we’ll find creative ways to entertain ourselves, ways to reconnect with our friends, meet our neighbors, volunteer for an animal rescue center, help build a house for Habitat for Humanity... giving our leisure time away is a great investment. Hmmm, just maybe.
Enjoy! Get out there and have some funSheila Lengle

start your engines—it’s Seafair time!Seafair
What a dif-ference 50 or so years can make! When Seafair first splashed into our summers, the Seattle area had no major league sports teams, no Seattle Center and no Space Needle. Seattle needed to be a player on the national scene in order to grow itself into what we are today...a robust, economically and ethnically diverse community. Seafair did for the Puget Sound what the Rose Bowl festivities did for SoCal...brought not only people to participate, but through the growing popularity of TV, it brought a nation of viewers to town.
Seafair has always been a winner, right from the beginning with multi-day events and highlights such as Thunderboats racing on Lake Washington, the Blue Angels thun-dering across the skies and parades headlined with likes of Bob Hope and Bing Crosby.

As major cities melt and become the same, Seafair is the fabric of our community that represents the Northwest lifestyle and keeps us unique.
Seafair has become the summer event series enjoyed by nearly 2 million Puget Sound residents each summer. Don’t miss any of the high-speed action during Seafair 2009! From creatively wacky milk carton boat racing on Green Lake, the antics and mischief of the outrageous Seafair Pirates to thun-dering hydroplanes on Lake Wash-ington, Seafair is a full week of uniquely Seattle Summer adventure.seafair.com

4th of JulyThe 4th of July holiday is just
around the corner and for many families that means
a trip to the beach. Parents will pack up the cooler, grab
some towels and load up the kids for a
day of family fun. There are a few
must take items to pack up too.
1. Avoid sunburn. Sun protection should be
number one on the list.
2. Be careful when walking around. It’s an
absolute must to take a pair of beach shoes for every
member of the family.
3. Be prepared. Another good idea (just in case) is the
trusty first aid kit.
4. Let the kids play their way. Some kids aren’t into
the whole building sand castles idea so they need
something else to help keep them occupied on the beach.
5. Snacks. A day at the beach can be a lot of hard work so take a long some
snacks. Pack something practical that everyone will eat.

The concept has caught on again, shop local and seasonal. There seems to be a farmers market taking place on every day of the week. You can find fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, artisan bakery and other edible products like jams and honey. There are handmade crafts, jew-elry and soaps. These community gathering places often educate by hosting a master gardener to answer gardening questions, or share information about local farm groups and land steward-ship. There could be a trio crank-ing out folk songs, and now, you may be able to use WIC and SFMNP coupons. Get to know your neighbors, eat nutritiously and support local farmers. See page 38 for local markets and when they start; many are year round, rain or shine!

Love Me...Love My Dog
(Dog policies at Farmers Markets)
The majority of dogs are well-behaved, but there have been incidents of dogs jump-ing up and eating samples off vendors’ tables, dogs
getting into fights with each other, and dogs on leashes
causing obstruction or safety hazards. Fortunately, these incidents are uncommon,
and because the markets are walking destinations and lei-surely outings for many shop-pers, most will try to accom-
modate dogs where they can. So, feed them, potty them
and get out there. Of course, service dogs are allowed at
all markets.

First Thursday in Pioneer Square was the first Art Walk in the U.S. In 1981 a group of Pioneer Square art dealers printed hand-out maps, did small-scale promotions, and on the first Thursday of the month painted footprints on the sidewalk outside their galleries. First Thursday soon evolved into a beloved fixture on the local arts calendar.
Art Walks are an amazing way to mingle with a really neat cross-section of people who like art, culture and society, as well as meeting struggling, striving and successful artists. Many venues seem like they’re parties where you could bump into Holly Golightly. Depending on the city or neighborhood, these free events are on a specific evening of the week and are hosted by local businesses and galleries.
Art Walks Seattle First Thursday takes place each month in Seattle’s historic Pioneer Square neighborhood, from noon - 8 p.m.
Ballard Galleries and businesses stay open late on the second Saturday of each month from 6 - 9 p.m. showcasing artists. Start at the south end of Ballard Avenue and work your way up the street to Market and continue.
West Seattle Brought to you by your local West Seattle merchants, over 40 businesses displaying art and showcasing artists every second Thursday, 6 - 9 p.m.
Burien This event is an annual Art Walk, a full day of fun with a wide range of amazing arts-related activities, art and per-formance in the shops on and around main street. Saturday, Sept. 6, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.

The International District - just south of Jackson Street near the King Street train station, is comprised of several blocks of a mix of Asian cultures. There are just too many to number; unique small shops filled with exotic merchandise, restaurants and grocery stores selling ethnic foods.
Alki Beach - the most hip and happening 2.5-mile strip of beach in the entire area. When the sun’s out it teems with inline skaters, volleyball players, cyclists, joggers, dog walkers and car-cruisers all creating that ‘we’re at the beach’ vibe. Lined with fabulous eateries, a view like no other of the sound and passing ferries, this may also be one of the most romantic stretch as well.
Fishermen’s Terminal - Located at Salmon Bay, it provides moorage to more than 700 commercial fishing and workboats, including some from the popular Discovery Channel show “Deadliest Catch.” It also houses restaurants, a fish market and the Fishermen’s Memorial. Just south of the Ballard Bridge.

Late summer may be the perfect season to enjoy Alki Beach. Beautiful weather meets diminishing crowds as kids go back to school. Since the beginning of the recorded history of our region, Alki Beach has been a destination. Seattle's rst pioneers landed at Alki Beach in 1851. For this reason, it is commonly referred to as "the Birthplace of Seattle.” Perhaps Alki's roots contribute to its draw, but today's pioneers are in search of great food, outdoor fun, and unique shopping. Alki doesn't disappoint. Consider Alki's former reputation as "Coney Island of the West" - Fun has always been the core of the Alki spirit. Then: beach cottages, hotels, dining establishments, indoor heated salt-water natatoriums, and the grand Luna Park amusement park. Now: Dining establishments, neighborhood merchants, and over three miles of scenic recreational opportu-nities. Times have changed, but Alki's reputation for attraction endures. The businesses of Alki look forward to seeing you this season to share the unique food and fun of the beach. For more information on the attractions of Alki, visit www.AlkiBeach.ws, the home page of the Alki Business Group - Businesses Working Together to Enhance the Alki Community.
Luna Park (1907-1913) was located at the Duwamish Head.
The pilings are still visible at low tide.
Alki Promenade, 1912. Thousands could ock to the popular Alkiarea with a bandstand, natatoriums, amusement park and beaches.

It’s a warm summer night and just really too nice to be inside watching TV. Most cities have arts and cultural programs offered free through their parks and recreation departments. Well, not really free, we do pay with taxes, so we really must take advantage of these delightful opportunities.
A picnic, a blanket and thou.
Enjoy summer with relaxing, informal activities like picnics, outdoor movies, plays and concerts.

1. Go for a walk for pure pleasure, not for exer-cise. You’ll be amazed what you see in your own neighborhood.
2. Make a kite from scratch, or from a kit. Then fly it. They’re amazing. There are directions and ideas on-line, and our windy beaches are perfect for kite-flying.
3. If you take your dog to a dog park, invite the little old lady who lives on your street and her Shi Tzu to go along with you. It’s a great way to get acquainted, and she might appreciate the company. Or if someone in your neighborhood has mobility problems and a dog, offer to take their buddy along when you go out.
Get out of the boxSummer isn’t the only season to have good-old fashioned
fun, but for those of us living in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, it’s a wide open window of opportunity.
Get out of the box and have some fun.

4. Introduce your children to museums before they start to think they’re boring. (Where does that come from any-way?) My kids have taken my grandson since he tot-tered and now at two-years-old, he actually gets excited when he knows it’s a mu-seum trip after his nap.
5. Collect neighbors’ unwanted paint then paint a mural somewhere fun. Maybe a neighborhood childcare, a church, a side of a parks building, somewhere when people see it they’ll not only get pleasure for their eyes but food for their thoughts.
6. Maybe there’s an elder who you could scribe their life stories. How wonderful a gift for you to be a part of their oral history.
7. Go to Shakespeare in the Parks. Go early, take a picnic and socialize, and enjoy the show.
8. Volunteer at a pet shelter. Take in a homeless pet. Re-ally, how much trouble is a cat? Dogs are more so, but they add so much to your life.
9. Go all the way —investigate how you can help, take in, mentor, sponsor, and feed regularly—a homeless per-son. A real concept huh?
