Austin City Limits

Austin City Limits started as a small but promising PBS music program in October

1974. Television-shy Willie Nelson, who had not yet reached his current level of

fame, kicked off the pilot episode. Now in its 43rd season, Austin City Limits is the

longest-running music series in American television history, hosting everyone from

B.B. King to Radiohead.1

United Heritage Credit Union has been fortunate to experience

sustained financial success over the past year, as clearly evidenced

by our lending portfolios, diverse share base and strong capital

position. Steady growth drove Credit Union assets past the $897.5

million mark in 2016, up $31 million from the same time in the

previous year. Such growth can be attributed to the hard work of

Credit Union staff to attain and maintain the confidence and trust

of our members.

As the Credit Union grows, we work diligently to meet and

exceed members’ needs, focusing our efforts on member service

improvements. We enhanced our digital capabilities in 2016,

which improved member access to the Credit Union’s products

and services. Such advances included upgrading the Credit

Union’s Online Banking interface, providing members with a more

streamlined digital experience across all their devices. Historically

low interest rates also enabled us to continue fulfilling members’

dreams of home ownership, car ownership, higher education and

more at a pace greater than the year before.

In 2016, the Credit Union hosted three Austin-Area Member

Appreciation events in the United Heritage Conference Center

at the Dell Diamond. These incredibly popular events featured a

Round Rock Express baseball game, ballpark fare, door prizes, face

painters, balloon artists and appearances by Beaker, the UHCU

eagle mascot. Member Appreciation, which has expanded over the

years due to demand, allows the Credit Union to publicly display

our gratitude for our members. For our members who reside in East

Texas, we hosted a carnival-themed Member Appreciation event at

the Tyler branch in the spring, complete with a bounce house, dunk

tank, local eats and giveaways.

None of these accomplishments would be possible without the

dedication of our Credit Union employees, who go above and

beyond in their commitment to members and the communities

we serve. Founded by a group of United Heritage employees in

2011, Team United Heritage upheld its tradition of community

involvement and service this year, donating 348 hours of personal

time volunteering for worthy causes. Team United Heritage

contributed $15,960 to deserving organizations this past year with

the support of the United Heritage Charity Foundation.

The achievements the Credit Union enjoyed in 2016 are due in large

part to the hard work and dedication of our volunteer Board of

Directors, with whom I have had the pleasure of serving alongside

for more than 20 years as Chairman. Each board member bestows

an enormous amount of time, knowledge and expertise in guiding

the Credit Union forward. This esteemed group of individuals

ensures that the Credit Union remains a strong, viable institution

and positions us for success year after year.

In 2017, the Credit Union will celebrate 60 years of providing

superior financial services to our membership. We thank all 58,983

members for their support over the last 59 years and look forward

to delivering even more value, convenience and high-quality

products in the years to come. In keeping with our Credit Union’s

objective, we are committed to making banking personal again

while maintaining a strong financial position now and in the future.

Over the past year, United Heritage Credit Union has tackled new

ventures, surpassed several milestones and worked tirelessly

to be the financial institution of choice for our members. Fueled

by healthy deposit growth, assets exceeded $897.5 million and

membership grew from 57,153 at 2015 year-end to 58,983 at 2016

year-end. Such steady expansion allowed the Credit Union to

continue offering competitive rates and enhanced services to our

membership.

Sound financial and risk management policies propelled 2016 to

become one of the Credit Union’s most successful years in recent

history, as evidenced by earnings, capital gains and assessments

conducted by state and federal regulators as well as the Credit

Union’s external audit firm. Financial strength was demonstrated

in the Credit Union’s 8.82% capital ratio, which indicates a well-

capitalized designation by regulatory standards. Additionally,

deposits increased $26.2 million during 2016, which came to a

close with 58,983 members entrusting a total $814.2 million of

their hard-earned funds to the Credit Union.

As members increasingly turn to their mobile devices to conduct

banking transactions and seek financial information, improving the

Credit Union’s digital experience remains a key strategic initiative

for our institution. In 2016, the Credit Union successfully upgraded

the UHCU Online Banking interface. Designed with members in

mind, the new UHCU Online Banking interface provides increased

functionality and enhanced navigation features, including improved

search options. The update also streamlines member experience

across all devices. The launch of Visa Checkout, a service that

simplifies online payment and shopping, further enriched the

Credit Union’s digital offerings this year. Such technological

improvements usher in many exciting new projects that are already

underway for 2017.

The Credit Union’s ability to provide superior-quality, personalized

service hinges on the commitment of our dedicated employees. In

2016, the United Heritage senior management team was greatly

enhanced by the addition of Keith Varney as Vice President of Real

Estate Lending. Mr. Varney joined United Heritage with more than

25 years of real estate lending experience, 14 of which were with a

credit union in Kansas and another 10 of which were with a Credit

Union Service Organization. Also in 2016, Joshua Robles assumed

the role of Vice President of Business Lending. Mr. Robles, whose

lengthy tenure with the Credit Union dates back nearly 15 years,

served in several positions prior to his promotion, most recently as

Director of Business Lending.

Also vital to the Credit Union is our dedicated Board of Directors,

composed of seven Board and three Associate members who

volunteer their time to shape the Credit Union’s operational

guidelines and act on behalf of its membership. As Credit Union

members themselves, the Board is personally invested in one main

goal: ensuring the Credit Union provides superior financial services

at present and for years to come. The Credit Union is incredibly

fortunate to have such a hardworking group of Board members

who truly embody the credit union philosophy of “People Helping

People.”

As a financial cooperative, United Heritage Credit Union’s success

represents our members’ success. We understand that members

have a choice in financial institutions, and we are proud they have

chosen ownership in this Credit Union. The results of 2016 indicate

the tangible and intangible value the Credit Union provides to its

member base, and we are confident that an even brighter future

lies ahead.

United Heritage Credit Union finished 2016 in solid financial

condition with both assets and membership levels recording strong

increases. Backed by a robust economic climate, United Heritage

maintained good earnings; a quality loan portfolio; a safe, liquid

investment portfolio; and a healthy capital position. This sustained

fiscal growth is a testament to the loyalty that our members

continuously show us year after year.

Credit Union assets inched closer to the $900 million mark in

2016, reaching almost $898 million by year-end. Loans posted a

record-high $742 million, up from $633 million at the same time

in 2015. Capital ratio rose to 8.82% this year, preserving the well-

capitalized regulatory status that the Credit Union has consistently

achieved. Membership increased 3% to more than 58,980, which

is indicative of the immense support the Credit Union receives from

the communities we serve.

At United Heritage, we pride ourselves on consistently delivering

outstanding products and services to help our member-owners

manage their finances. Because our membership’s satisfaction

level is so vital to how we move forward as a Credit Union, senior

management and the Board of Directors consider reviewing

product and program usage a necessary step in determining how to

best serve members in the upcoming year.

In 2016, a record 11,216 member loans totaling $503 million were

approved. The number of debit card transactions for the year

reached 29 million. Many other services recorded similar levels of

achievement. For example, Mobile App usage climbed to an average

of 192,506 logins per month. Additionally, the Credit Union paid out

more than $3.8 million in dividends on members’ shares this year,

continuing a longstanding history of delivering a healthy return on

member deposits.

As the Credit Union continues to evolve and expand, we remain

focused on our members as we set new goals for 2017. The success

we have experienced thus far is certainly due to the high level of

confidence our growing membership has placed in us, and it has

positioned us to successfully navigate any challenges as well as

seize any opportunities that arise in the coming years.

United Heritage Credit Union’s Audit Committee, comprised of

Board of Director members who are chosen for their experience

and expertise, is appointed each year by the United Heritage Board

Chairman. These three Committee appointees monitor regulatory

supervisory processes and oversee both internal and external audit

functions. The Audit Committee also works alongside Credit Union

staff to guarantee that strategic and operational goals are met and

member service standards are achieved.

Independent audit firm PMB Helin Donovan, LLP performed the

financial audit of United Heritage and its subsidiaries for 2016,

in accordance with Texas Finance Code requirements. Based on

the results of that in-depth financial audit, PMB Helin Donovan

LLP issued an unqualified opinion on the consolidated financial

statements for United Heritage Credit Union as of December 31,

2016.

To fulfill state and federal regulatory requirements, representatives

of both the State of Texas Credit Union Department and the

National Credit Union Administration also examined United

Heritage Credit Union in 2016. These examinations are conducted

annually to ensure the safety and security of the Credit Union’s

operations. Taking into consideration the collective findings of

independent auditors, federal and state regulatory examiners,

and financial and operational statements, the Audit Committee is

pleased to report that United Heritage Credit Union is in excellent

financial condition and management procedures are sufficient to

protect the assets of our members.

To verify the Credit Union’s quality of member service, the

Audit Committee also works closely with the Risk Management

Department to oversee member satisfaction levels. In 2016, United

Heritage received a 100% favorable service rating, which clearly

reflects the continued approval of our growing membership.

The United Heritage Credit Union Audit Committee remains

devoted to the mission and values of the Credit Union. We are

grateful for the support of our nearly 59,000 members and the

opportunity to provide each member with the highest achievable

financial service.

Improving existing and offering new digital services remains a core

initiative for United Heritage Credit Union. To this end, the Credit

Union unveiled an upgraded Online Banking interface in 2016. With

more members accessing their Credit Union accounts via Mobile

Banking each year, optimizing mobile access is a top priority. The

Online Banking update increases functionality and streamlines the

member experience across all devices. In the past year, the Credit

Union also launched Visa Checkout, a service that simplifies online

payment and shopping.

The safety and security of members’ personal information is of the

utmost importance to United Heritage Credit Union. Throughout

the year, the Credit Union provided members with a wealth of useful

advice on safeguarding their sensitive data and offered updates

on a variety of security threats via the online UHCU Security

Center. 2016 Security Center posts included details on local text

messaging scams, guidelines on what to do in the aftermath of the

Yahoo security breaches and more.

Members can also find information about money management,

home buying, car expenses and other helpful topics on the United

Heritage Blog, which is updated regularly. Visit uhcu.org/blog to

read the aforementioned posts as well as the latest Credit Union

news about charitable activities, events and contests.

In an effort to keep all members informed, the Credit Union utilizes

a variety of social media outlets, including Facebook, Twitter

and Instagram. Credit Union followers across all social channels

increased more than 10% in 2016 while total engagement grew

nearly 32%.

As United Heritage Credit Union progresses into 2017, the year of

its 60th anniversary, the Credit Union has renewed its commitment

to further enhance digital services as well as provide members with

products that promote and protect their financial wellbeing.

United Heritage Credit Union is fortunate to employ staff members

who are enthusiastic about improving the communities in which

they live and work. This passion is what drives many United

Heritage employees to become a part of Team United Heritage,

a group that regularly volunteers man hours and resources to

support local, charitable organizations and initiatives.

In 2016, Team United Heritage’s 89 volunteers participated

in 18 events across Central and East Texas. Additionally, they

volunteered a total of 348 hours of their free time and raised

$15,960 worth of donations for local charities.

Motivated by altruistic values, Team United Heritage turns

the ordinary into the extraordinary. Whether as an individual

philanthropic endeavor or a group activity, participants of Team

United Heritage continue to improve the lives of those in their

community on a regular basis.

Austin Music History

Stubb’s Bar-B-Q

Christopher B. Stubblefield, better known as “Stubb,” has a legacy that continues to influence the Austin music industry today.

Stubb opened his first restaurant in Lubbock in 1968, and it quickly became a hot venue

for artists like Joe Ely and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Though the original Stubb’s in Lubbock is now closed, the legend continues here in

Austin on Red River Street.4

2016 was another banner year for the United Heritage Charity

Foundation. Founded in 2003, the Charity Foundation is a self-

funding, independent nonprofit that strives to support deserving

organizations in and around the communities United Heritage

Credit Union services.

In 2016, the Charity Foundation awarded $10,000 in scholarships

to college-bound high school seniors and donated another

$162,072 to local organizations. The Charity Foundation’s annual

Auto Raffle was once again the most successful fundraiser,

raising a record $70,424 through ticket sales in its sixth year –

an increase of $4,500 over the previous year. Floy Bryan was

randomly selected as the winner of the Auto Raffle and took home

a 2016 Honda Civic LX Sedan donated by Howdy Honda. Since its

inception, the Charity Foundation has distributed nearly $1.5 million

to charitable causes in Central and East Texas.

The United Heritage Charity Foundation Board of Managers is

incredibly grateful to all who have helped the Charity Foundation

realize its mission year after year. We’d also like to recognize

the positive impact that Team United Heritage made in 2016.

This group of Credit Union employees generously gives their

free time to support meaningful, local projects and causes. It

is truly inspiring to witness the dedication these extraordinary

volunteers demonstrate to philanthropic service and bettering their

communities.

With your continued support, the United Heritage Charity

Foundation looks forward to 2017 and renewing our commitment

to charitable initiatives that positively impact fellow Texans. Visit

United Heritage Community Scholarship

The Charity Foundation annually awards two college scholarships

to high school seniors who best exemplify the credit union

philosophy of “People Helping People.” In spring 2016, the United

Heritage Community Scholarship Committee awarded Zachary Ray

and Eliza Cain each with a $5,000 scholarship. The two Austin-

area high school seniors were selected based on their exceptional

level of community service, impressive extracurricular activities

and superior academic performance. H. Ralph Wilburn and Harold

Keyes presided over the scholarship presentations.
