Welcome to Term 4 everyone! I can promise, both the Administration and Education Departments will not have an easy and relaxing term since we will be busy with many events and 2018 preparations before the end of the year.

Firstly, I would like to thank Sis Kauthar Abdulhalim of Zawadi Tours for organising the “Unstoppable” seminars by Br Kash Iqbal during 22-28 August for our students, teachers and parents. I wish her and Br Kash Iqbal all the best and may Allah (swt) reward them for their hard work.

We have had many activities over the past few weeks with more to come – I thank everyone involved in each of the following events of the College:• VCE Tree Planting Day, Friday 20 October. Our VCE

The building was officially opened by the Hon Telmo Languiller, MP for Tarneit and witnessed by the Mayor of Wyndham City Council, business associates, school council members and our staff. I would like to thank Hon Telmo Languiller MP for his inspiring speech. I was also impressed with Shanura and Mahasen, our Year 11 grils who gave professional speeches on the day. The event ended with a tour of the new building and lunch. Guests were presented with an Olive Plant as a token of peace and friendship. It is a traditional event for the College and photos may be found on our website.

O V E R S E A S T R I PI would like to share the experiences during the overseas trip to China during the Term 3 holidays from 24 September-5 October. A group of seven staff and students visited a few schools and a kindergarten in the province of Kunming. It was interesting for us to learn about their culture, language, educational systems and we vastly exchanged ideas. The educational experience was great – they are different but systematic and progressive! The Kunming side of China is where the Muslim community are living very cohesively - they are good practicing Muslims having their young sent to kindergarten and schools to learn religion and memorise the Quran. We were impressed with their passion for culture and religion. There was no adversity!

The group moved further down to Jakarta before returning to Melbourne. They had the opportunity to visit our sister school in Sentul to meet students and teachers there. Of course at the end of the day, everyone was overwhelmed with extra luggage for the must-get souvenirs for relatives and friends. The group thoroughly enjoyed themselves at the Safari Zoo in Punchak.

Car Park ChangesThe new carpark structure has been working extremely well. If you are travelling towards the City down Sayers Road, please turn right at Doubell Blvd and left at the first street which is Devitt Pl. This takes you directly in front of

the girls sports court and easy access to classes through the sports court. Going this way will cut off at least 10 minutes of your travel time.

Thank you to all drivers for your patience and courtesy towards our staff on duty.

Dear Parents, Students & FriendsA S S A L A M U A L A I K U M

L A T E A R R I V A L S A N D E A R L Y D I S M I S S A L S We are still experiencing many students arriving late each day. School commences at 8.50am and all students are expected to arrive ontime. If you are finding heavy traffic in the mornings, try the new carpark and if you can leave 10 minutes earlier each day, this will ensure an early arrival.

If your child is required to be collected early due to an appointment, please advise the Administration Office so they can have your child waiting for you in the foyer. Students who fall ill during the day will be contacted by the Nursing staff for collection from the First Aid Department.

Students must carry their ID cards in their school bags at all times.

S T U D E N T A P P O I N T M E N T STo avoid disruption to your child’s learning it is requested that medical or other appointments for your children are made outside of school hours.

S P A R E C L O T H I N GWe have many younger students presenting to the front office due to bathroom accidents. For parents with children in Foundation and Grade 1, can you please provide an extra pair of pants, underwear and socks in their school bags.

S P E E D I N GOver the course of the year, we have found many parents speeding in the car parks. As you can imagine this is extremely dangerous especially when smaller children pop out between cars. Please follow the actions of our staff on duty and keep in line with the speed on the school grounds at all times.

P A R E N T P O R T A LOur Parent Portal is available for all families to be able to update their personal details online. If you have changed address or phone numbers, log onto website and change your details through the portal.

S T U D E N T I D C A R D SAll students should have their own ID cards now, please ensure that your child keeps their ID card in their school bag at all times.

First Aid NewsMillions of Aussies (about 1 in 5) deal with the sniffles and watery eyes that characterise hayfever. Hayfever is the reactive swelling of the inside of the nose that results in a sensitive immune system which wrongly identifies pollen, dust or other particulates as a threat to the body.

If you suffer from allergies, you know the symptoms: coughing, sneezing, itchy eyes, runny nose, and a scratchy throat. Common allergens and irritants found in and around the home are pollen, dust mites, mold, insect droppings, pet hair, and secondhand smoke. Exposure to these allergens can even bring about a serious asthma attack.

Recently, the Nursing Department has seen a spike in students presenting for hayfever allergies. As such, I would highly encouraged parents/guardians to download the app called “Melbourne Pollen Forecast” and to ensure your child has their antihistamine (such as Zrytec, Telfast or Claratyne) before school as this will cover them for the whole day. If you have not consented for your child to have any antihistamine in school, please give us a call. If you have any queries, we are happy to assist with your concerns.

Health & SafetyDear Parents, we are now in the warmer months of the year and with this, please take care to ensure that your children are supplied with clean, cool, fresh drinking water and wearing their sun hat protection and sunscreen. Fresh fruit and vegetables for snacks and in sandwiches are cooling and delicious, so enjoy.

Parents/guardians are also reminded that no child of any age is permitted to be kept inside cars in the College car park, or any car park anywhere for that matter, as it is not safe and not lawful. Thank you.

This week, students from Arndell Park Kindergarten visited our school and spent some time in our foundation classes. Our foundation students were very excited to show the younger children their classrooms.

The kindergarten students took part in story time, listened to nursery rhymes and completed a worksheet with the help of their foundation buddy.

The Arndell Park Kindergarten staff members were very happy with our foundation teachers and students. They loved our colourful and inviting environment and that they would highly recommend Al-Taqwa College to the parents of Arndell Park Kindergarten.

Welcome back to another busy last term. This term, we look forward to a number of exciting events that will complement the quality teaching/learning taking place in our classrooms. These include excursions/incursion, assemblies, Vision Night and a school picnic. We would like to thank all parents who attended our first assembly this term. Students put up fantastic performances even though we just started the term.

E X C U R S I O N / I N C U R S I O N SGrade 2 will be visiting Werribee Mansion and this time, they will be exploring the connection between the Mansion and the suburb and its significance to the area. There will be a writing incursion ‘Ideas Factory’ where students will be challenged to develop their creativity, thinking and writing skills while they give their imagination a real work out!

In line with the Science topic, Furs, Feathers and Leaves, the Grade 3s will be visiting Ecolinc to investigate how features of plants and animals help them adapt to their environment for survival.

H A T SStudents are required to wear a sun safe hat this term and parents are advised to apply and supply SPF 30+ sun cream to their children during the summer months. Students without hats will be directed to the covered area.

S C H O O L A T T E N D A N C EWe all want our children to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begins with students coming to school each and every day. If your child misses one day a fortnight that then equals to four full weeks by the end of the year. By Year 10 they will have missed more than a year of school!

T I P S T O G E T T O S C H O O L O N T I M E*Make sure your child understands why school is important*Show your child that you are interested in what they have done at school*Get everything ready the night before school*If possible arrange appointments outside of school hours*Don’t forget to set your alarm*Leave home 10 minutes early

It’s only the beginning of term 4 and we already have so much to share with you!

The Grade 5 girls had the opportunity to visit Camp Coorong and came back with special memories to treasure. Some of the highlights included our visit to the Buchan caves, a day at the park with access to rides and activities such as laser tag, damper making, Halakas and empowering girls session, bushwalks around the camp site and the amazing ferry trip.

An exciting new student led an Upper Primary Footy mentoring program which has taken off with passionate grade 6 students mentoring Grade 3’s towards important life skills such as teamwork and sportsmanship. We look forward to updating you more on this student initiated project. The Grade 6’s attended the Yellow Lantern public speaking skills incursion with a focus on positive self talk, empowered speech and celebrating personality.

Our Grade 4’s went on an excursion run by Port Phillip Eco Centre to the St Kilda Pier to learn more about natural disasters and erosion. Environmental awareness was developed through hands on activities such as understanding how water creates erosion through

sandcastle activity and conducting a beach profile to look at the movement of sands over time. A Graffiti Education program seminar was held for students in grade 5 and 6 to address social change on Graffiti which was delivered by the presenter in an engaging and interactive manner. Teacher, Sarah Upton along with four grade 6 students headed off to the MCG to participate in the ‘Champions day’ where they were involved in a series of sports activities such as wheelchair basketball and AFL skills. Also our SEEP students took part in a forensic science workshop aimed at improving students investigation skills through inferencing and analysing data. We are looking forward to many more events such as Vision Night, the year 6 graduation night and our Grade 4-6 Media students ACMI- Lights, camera, action! excursion as well as the Uppers Brunswick East Regional Debating Day.

College MarketingFor the College to ensure enrolments are maintained it is crucial for us to be known within the local community. Previously the College has communicated with families via printed media. With technology moving forward, we have slowly introduced electronic forms in terms of how we send out the newsletter. Our advertising materials are now available on our website which allows us to reach a much larger audience.

Social media has become the most effective way to market the College. Therefore, to promote these events further, we have created a Facebook page. There are regular posts,

photos and updates of College events. So far this term the staff at the College have been extremely busy organising and running various events and this is the best way for us to share these milestones.

So get online and follow us on Facebook at facebook.com/altaqwacollege

Any parent that is concerned about their child’s photo being shared on social media should send an email to [email protected]

We had the pleasure to open our Annual Art and Design Exhibition on Friday, 20 October. Both students and teachers worked tirelessly to showcase and shine light on our students’ amazing talent. Under the Theme “My Vision of the Word” The highlight of 2017 show was showcasing our College’s achievements and encouraging our young artists by celebrating their work in a real art gallery environment. Besides a spectacular Exhibition there was a variety of interactive activities and events including art workshops to feel, see and hear, student art work to love and admire.

Al-Taqwa is a community built on mutual understanding, communication and vision, and there is no language that unites a community quite like art. Our Secondary students, from first-time artists to veterans of paint and canvas – took their visions and interpretations of the world around them and immortalised them in paint, ink, pencil and charcoal. Through their work, we were given a unique opportunity to see through their eyes and share their world. It was a core principle of the art team at Al-Taqwa that our students not

be led – instead, our job was to show them the path and light their way as they walked it. In My Vision of the World, our students have shown us the path.

It’s hard to believe that we have finally reached term 4 and coming to the end of the year soon. It has been an incredible journey for grade 4s in their first every SEEP grade 4 class. They have made history in Al-Taqwa College and will always have fond memories of being in this class.

Grade 4s have been enhancing their learning throughout the year in many exciting ways. They have been successful in improving their speaking and listening skills through debating, role plays and shared inquiry.

Grade 4F were fortunate to take part in the Australian Maths Competition and came out with flying colours. They

proved to have great mathematical skills as nine students received distinction scores and Zaid Mohammad who scored a high distinction in the Competition won the Best in School Award. This was a great achievement for the class.

Some of the students took part in a very interesting incursion on Forensic Science. They were given the opportunity to solve a missing person’s case. The students were presented with a crime scene and in the process investigated subjects like finger prints, chromatography, scatology etc to solve the mystery of the missing youth. This gave the students exposure to forensic science on a hands-on basis. It was an incredible experience for the students.
