From the Editor Spring and early summer have been busy around here. After nationals we had our first bulldog litter, a singleton puppy we call Wilma. I am thankful to have Geraldine, my Boston terrier who takes care of Wilma. Flossie the bulldog mother certainly won’t be winning any mother of the year award. At first, when I would hold Wilma up to her mother, Flossie would turn her head in the other direction. My Boston Geraldine has been cleaning and sleeping with Wilma since she was born. I am glad, for Geraldine’s sake, that Flossie only had one puppy. I don’t know how she would keep up with a large litter. I am happy to announce that I am going to have help with the Coast to Coast. Carolyn Garmon has graciously offered her assistance and will be helping create ads. I look forward to working with her in upcoming issues.

COLOPHONThe Coast to Coast is produced with the
Adobe Creative Suite on Macintosh computers.Body text is set in Adobe Caslon Pro and Myriad Pro. Adobe Caslon is based on the type designs
of William Caslon, circa 1725. These in turn had been influenced by the dutch types of the late
seventeenth century. Although old style in nature they have less stress than some of the earlier
faces of the genre. The Adobe Caslon font family was based on specimen pages printed by Caslon
between 1734 and 1770. Myriad was designed by Carol Twombly and robert Slimbach in 1992.The display faces are Fling and Kursivschrift. Fling is a fanciful typeface was designed by
resident Letraset designer Michael Gills and is based on the famous French ronde script.
Created entirely on screen, Fling has a precise, clinical appearance. The capitals are for initialling
purposes only and support a lowercase that is rich in alternative and ligatured letterforms. Also
included is a host of attractive embellishment devices. Kursivschrift is by designer German
Cartographic design and published by Linotype. The Coast to Coast is printed at
Badger Press in Fort Atkinson, WI on a heidelberg MoZP-2 Color Perfector offset.

President Ola Jeanne McCollough called the meeting to order at 8:06 p.m. (EST). Present were Ola Jeanne McCollough, Joyce Fletcher, Lynda Bradley, Richard Nix, Dane LaJoye, Marby Kelly (AKC Delegate), Maureen Blackwood, Dick Wiest, Peggy Jackson, Sharon Stoll, and Carolyn Gastley. Absent was Linda Jett.
Board Reports
President – No report.
Vice President – No report
Recording Secretary – Bradley contacted Mary Kosanke, CPA to ask if she would be available for the BTCA to use her services for counting ballots for the 2010 Annual Election. She is willing and able to perform the same services she did in years previous for the club, and for the same cost of $250. Bradley asked for Board approval to contract the use of Ms. Kosanke’s services. Joyce made the motion for Bradley to confirm the use of this assistance for ballot counting in the BTCA 2010 election, Jackson seconded. Motion approved unanimously. Motion made by Nix to approve the December 7, 2009 meeting minutes as corrected, seconded by Gastley. Motion approved unanimously.
Corresponding Secretary – LaJoye contacted John Connelly with an invitation to judge the 2011 BTCA National Specialty in Reno, NV. Connelly responded he was glad and honored to be asked to judge. His fee will be $400 plus expenses and would like to pass onto the Board his personal thanks for the invite. Fletcher inquired as to what Connelly’s other expenses might be. LaJoye felt since he lives in Washington State, he would require airfare and two night’s hotel stay, so approximated expenses would be an additional $400. Jackson asked if Harry Smith was contacted regarding judging the National, since according to the list created by a membership vote, Mr. Smith was ranked in the 4th position, and John Connelly the 5th position. Jackson referred to the May 23, 2007 meeting minutes for the listing of rankings. LaJoye noted however when discussed at a previous meeting, Connelly’s name was presented and he was instructed to contact him with an invitation. The Board as a whole made an error in reviewing the order of judge selection, and
thus Harry Smith will be asked to judge the 2012 National. Carolina Kennel Club sent a letter to LaJoye cordially inviting the Boston Terrier Club of America to support the Boston entry or hold a host a specialty at the Carolina cluster shows in August 2010. The Board felt it was a local club issue and they could look for a supported entry instead. LaJoye received a letter from Gastley, which he will review later in the meeting.
Treasurer’s Report – Nix reported as of December 31, 2009 : $490.79 in the Boston Terrier of the Year account, $6,480 - Futurity, General Funds - $36,072.95, Health - $14,397.65, Perpetual Trophy - $5,706.98, Rescue -$5,091.25 = for a total of $68,239.62. Nix presented a member to the Board who owes funds from a returned check. Nix has contacted the member via e-mail twice and stated he recommends suspension of membership to the Board. Discussion on sending the member a certified/registered letter via US mail since club expulsion is at stake, and also eliminating the e-mail address listed on the Roster. Gastley made a motion to send the member a letter discussing the situation and offering a time frame to respond. Fletcher seconded, motion approved with Nix abstaining. Delinquent Affiliate clubs who were behind on dues but have now paid: Western Pennsylvania, Valley of the Sun, Heartland, Greater Houston and Hawkeye. LaJoye stated he was under the impression Valley of the Sun club had been disbanded and felt a clarification is needed from AKC. If the club is non-existent, they will have to start the application process from the beginning. A letter needs to be written and sent in regards to their status and what is needed from them to have become a viable club. LaJoye will send this letter to the club President, Vice President, Byron Elder (Affiliate club liaison) and Marby Kelly. Peggy made a motion to reinstate Hawkeye, Greater Houston, and Heartland clubs, seconded by LaJoye. Motion carried unanimously. LaJoye to send a letter to these clubs informing them of their reinstatement to the BTCA. AKC Delegate Report – The AKC Board of Directors has decided not to discuss and therefore postpone indefinitely, the group re-alignment proposal. Kelly felt this decision was made due to the time element, superintendents, and because

of the additional cost to clubs. She also informed the Board of an e-mail she received regarding possible changes for Obedience, Agility and Rally with regards to mixed breeds now being allowed to compete. She asked Gastley if the BTCA is allowing other breeds to compete in these events at the National. They are not, since it is a Specialty. AKC did approve mixed breeds to be shown in the same classes as purebred dogs, but no AKC performance club is required to offer or open their trial to mixed breeds. Fletcher asked Kelly for more information on handling when showing in the Bred-by class. Jackson recited information from the AKC rulebook : Effective January 1, 2010, Chapter 3, Section 8 – the person handling the dog in the Bred-by class, must be the breeder and owner of record of the dog, and in any subsequent classes for which this dog becomes eligible, there are no restrictions on who may handle the dog.
Unfinished Business
2010 National Update – LaJoye is waiting on the Premium list to be sent to him from MB-F for proofing. It was sent to MB-F the second week in December. He requested Fletcher assist him with the proofing when returned, and also Ken Roux as LaJoye wants Roux to ensure accuracy the rules are correctly stated for Futurity. Gastley stated that MB-F has not contacted her for the Agility Premium list. She wondered if they knew she was the contact for the show, yet LaJoye assured her MB-F is aware. LaJoye to forward the name of the person who he has dealt with, so Gastley might forward her Agility Premium list. LaJoye said he currently has checks for trophy donations and will forward to Nix this week. With the show packet on the website and in the C2C, he feels more donations will be submitted.
LaJoye then asked the Board’s opinion regarding holding a seminar on Tuesday night at the National by Dr. Carmen Bataglia, who comes highly recommended, lives in the Atlanta area, and who normally presents 2 half-day seminars which would work for an evening seminar. Bataglia would rather not present his talk on structure as it could be confusing and conflict with Carl Gomes’ judging seminar, yet his other 3 hour presentation on how to raise puppies is a helpful lecture with slides. Bataglia charges $300, will not need a hotel room or mileage compensation. LaJoye mentioned that at a rate of $25 per person, only 15 entrants need to be enrolled to break even. The seminar would be held from 7:30 – 10:30 PM and no health clinics would conflict with this date. If the club wants to offer this speaker at the National, LaJoye could post on lists and the website. Blackwood felt the presentation on raising puppies was excellent. Concern was raised if not enough people signed up for the course, what is the cancellation policy. LaJoye answered that if the course is not full by May 1, 2010, the club can cancel yet would owe half the fee or $150.To be more specific on the content of the seminar, Bataglia would speak on how the benefits of a series of exercises for neurological stimulation on the puppy is done so the puppy is better able to handle stress and deal with the world. These methods have proven to be very successful. For increased attendance, Bataglia suggested contacting local All–Breed clubs, other Atlanta area breed clubs, or training clubs. Motion by Blackwood to invite Dr. Bataglia to offer this seminar Tuesday evening at the National Specialty, for $25. Jackson seconded, motion carried unanimously. LaJoye inquired about dedicating the National to any person in particular. Several names were discussed and it was thought to dedicate the show to more than one person. LaJoye made a
motion to dedicate the show to Ann McCammon, Marsha Johnsma, and Dorothy Gomes. Seconded by Fletcher, motion passed unanimously.LaJoye will request short biographies if needed. He has photos of all three individuals. Gastley asked if the BTCA received permission to use a copywrited image of Coca Cola, since it was used as the theme and shown to promote the upcoming National. LaJoye would investigate but the club is a non-profit enterprise and the image was not used with the product name shown. In the past for example, a Harley Davidson motorcycle was used in conjunction with the Milwaukee show and permission was not requested. Gastley would like to also meet with LaJoye to discuss the offering of similar prizes for “High in Trial” as they have done in the past, so they are the same/comparable to the conformation awards. Having a back-up plan for equipment to be provided for the agility trials in the instance it cannot be delivered, was a discussion brought forward by Gastley. She asked Nix if his club had equipment to use and she will also contact Julie Haddy. The 2011 National will take place April 11-15th..
Fletcher informed the Board she would like to donate crate fans and Boston Terrier door toppers she has since the Houston show. LaJoye made a motion to have Fletcher donate the items to the Health Committee auction. Gastley seconded, motion approved unanimously.
New Business
Membership Chair Replacement – McCollough reported that at the last Board meeting, a motion was made, seconded and approved unanimously to replace the Membership Chair so this issue is no longer open for further discussion. Jackson stated that she would then step down as the liaison to

the Membership Chair since she was not aware of unresolved issues. Fletcher offered that the Membership Chair did not send packets to new members in 2009 and that she had spoken to the Membership Chair shortly after the new chair was appointed to the job and had followed up the conversation by mailing a copy of the job description directly to the new chair. Fletcher also read the 2008 committee report written by the new chair. LaJoye asked Jackson to reconsider her position on this matter and Jackson did not want to reconsider.
2011 National Specialty – LaJoye has the hotel contract in hand and they have agreed to all requests made by the club. Gastley questioned the number of members in the Golden Gate BT Club, and LaJoye responded according to AKC, they have 11 members. LaJoye has also received an e-mail from Cindy Adams who with her husband from California, is willing to join the Golden Gate club and has agreed to help with the 2011 show and can act as a Host Club liaison. Gastley also wondered how the logistics would work with the event taking place several hours from the home base of the host club. LaJoye offered that the club will arrive early to the hotel and he will also perform a site visit early fall, to meet members and complete a walk-through with hotel staff. He stated much of the legwork for the show can be completed off-site. Gastley was guarded with her support of the BTCA offering supported Performance, since sanctioning and licensing is very important. According to AKC, 5 BTCA members need to be on the Performance Committee and the Chairman must be on-site at the facility at all times, in the event an AKC representative makes contact. These past issues with AKC has made following the regulations especially critical. Fletcher cautioned that the option does exist to go outside
and pay another organization for their assistance. Currently, there are no replacements for Gastley as Performance Chair. McCollough suggested advertising in the C2C for interested parties to come forward to learn and volunteer to work on the Performance committee and/or more specifically, become Performance chair.
Rescue Chair – Jackson reported that information was placed in the C2C for a Rescue Chair volunteer and there was no response. Kim Pennington has submitted dues but would like to step down and hand the role to another dedicated individual. It was thought that many clubs have their own rescue chair and is possibly why there is not more of an interest. Jackson originally wanted representatives in 4 locations of the U.S., but now is thinking of going back to the Affiliate clubs, and Fletcher suggested having Byron Elder contact her. Pennington needs a committee and would like to begin a “chain transport” to assist rescue Bostons, getting the dogs to an available home by having members take them on legs of a particular trip/destination. Networking with fellow members is key, yet having a record of health exams and shots is critical.
New Member Applications / Membership – LaJoye sent ballots to the Board with copies of member applications for voting, but has received 4 additional applications. He suggested the Board discuss the potential members at this meeting rather than having the applicants wait until the Annual meeting in May. La Joye to send the final list of approved members the Board.Jackson left the conference at 10:02. Nix received a handwritten thank you letter from AKC, for the BTCA’s $5500 donation to their cause. He reported the club taxes have been filed. Nix was disappointed he received his Coast to Coast 18 days after it was mailed. He
feels it should be sent to the membership 1st class since dues were raised in the past to cover this. He also was confused why 575 copies of the C2C were printed when membership numbers do not support a reason for this. LaJoye stated that Berth prints extra copies to be sent to the Membership chair, since each new membership packet has a copy enclosed. Nix still felt the number was excessive along with the costs of approximately $2400 to produce. Nix stated that the mailing of the C2C to International members cost approximately $7.50 per issue and with 20 members, the total was $152.99. Question of whether to charge non-US members higher dues. To confirm, Fletcher was able to proof and speak to Berth regarding the C2C publication in time for distribution. The turn around time for proofing met with what was agreed upon at the last meeting. Discussion on using pre-sorted verses 1st class mailing of the C2C. Suggestion of whether to use a new printer to reduce costs was mentioned, but it was thought Berth could assist with this discussion at the next Board meeting in March to clarify if this is a possibility. In the meantime, the committee can meet to discuss ideas and solutions. Jackson emphasized the difficulty of editing a publication like the C2C since a change on one page would require many additional hours of work. The next issue will have the winner of the National on the front cover. A request was made to place further discussion of the C2C on the next meeting agenda and have Berth participate. The National will also be a topic at the next Board meeting scheduled to take place March 23, 2010. A motion was made by LaJoye to adjourn, seconded by Nix. Meeting adjourned at 10:23 p.m. (EST).

President Ola Jeanne McCollough called the meeting to order at 8:03 p.m. (EST). Present were Ola Jeanne McCollough, Joyce Fletcher, Richard Nix, Dane LaJoye, Marby Kelly, Maureen Blackwood, Peggy Jackson, Linda Jett, and Sharon Stoll. Absent were Dick Wiest and Carolyn Gastley. Motion by Fletcher to approve the meeting minutes from January 26, 2010 as corrected, seconded by McCollough. Motion approved unanimously. Bradley stated she will not be attending the National in May, and asked Fletcher to take Board and Annual Meeting minutes. Fletcher accepted and the Board had no objections. Discussion began regarding the 2010 Futurity by Stoll, who felt the selection process for judges was mishandled by the rules not being followed according to information published on the BTCA website and in the Coast to Coast. Stoll read the stated rules as follows:
VI. SELECTION OF JUDGESA. Nomination of Futurity Judges will be limited to the participants in the Futurity.B. Each breeder who has submitted a bitch nomination (co-bred litters, one vote per bitch nomination by primary owner as recorded by AKC) by a date to be announced by the Futurity Director will be given the opportunity to nominate their choice of futurity judge. Each breeder will receive one nomination for every three litters nominated with no breeder submitting more than two (2) nominations. Each nominated judge name will be placed in a sealed ballot envelope by the breeder and mailed to the Futurity Director. Each nominee will be contacted verbally and must submit in writing their acceptance as a possible candidate within 10 days of verbal contact. All confirmed nominees may submit entries for competition in this event. However, the winners of Judge Draw will be required to withdraw their entries and will be refunded their money. Dogs owned by the judges for this event can not participate
in this event but may participate in other Boston Terrier Club of America, Inc. regular and non-regular events. As a result of not following these rules, many eligible breeders were not aware or notified regarding the selection of judges. An e-mail letter dated December 8, 2009 was sent to some litter nominees requesting the recipient to select from a pre-selected list of individuals. They were instructed to send responses to the committee by December 15, 2009. The e-mail also allowed for the person to cast a vote for a person of their choice who they would like to be considered. Stoll and LaJoye observed that the rules did not state a short list would be created, nor litter nominees could write in their own choices, and they were to be given 10 days (not 7) to submit their choices. Not all litter nominees received this e-mail and when they realized the vote had been taken with a short list, many called Board members to complain they did not have an opportunity to vote for Futurity judges. (STOLL) The reason the rules were not followed was not readily known, nor how the committee came up with the short list of names provided. LaJoye stated he contacted Roux for the names of Futurity judges in order to list them in the National Premium list by the end of December. LaJoye also contacted Roux to invite him to attend the Board meeting March 23, 2010, and Roux responded via e-mail that he could not attend due to the short notice given. He did however welcome any questions or concerns regarding Futurity be sent thru Jackson, the committee liaison. Jackson remarked she was not contacted regarding this issue. She encouraged membership and the Board to address any questions or concerns to her via e-mail, telephone, or postal mail so she can take concerns or questions to the Futurity committee. Keeping on track, Fletcher reminded the group the purpose of the meeting is to
PAge no have the Board address any possible concerns membership might have with the handling of this process. Kelly agreed and inquired as to what a Board recommended plan of action might be. LaJoye wanted to add his belief that Futurity will be a terrific addition to the National show and mistakes adhering to rules do happen. Yet he also warned Futurity is an AKC regulated event, unlike the Top Boston Competition. A resolution/solution needs to be agreed upon before the National, to be fair to those who have concerns with the way the process for Futurity judge selection was handled.
Motion made by Fletcher to offer anyone who entered Futurity and did not show their dog in this event can be refunded all Futurity fees. Entry fees for regular classes would not be eligible for a refund. Motion seconded by Nix. Jackson requested a roll call vote: Joyce Fletcher - yes, Lynda Bradley – yes, Richard Nix - yes, Dane LaJoye - Yes, Maureen Blackwood - yes, Peggy Jackson - no, Linda Jett - yes, and Sharon Stoll - yes. Motion carried. Bradley inquired if the committee was aware of this discrepancy / issue. The Board agreed Jackson as liaison, should inform the committee of this meeting and concerns discussed
LaJoye announced the next Board meeting will take place Sunday, May 16, 2010 at the BTCA National dog show in Atlanta, GA. The start time will be approximately 12:00 PM, with a working lunch, and end at approximately 5:00 PM. Fletcher suggested discussing agenda items left over from the March meeting as a starting point. Motion made to by LaJoye to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Stoll. Meeting adjourned at 8:48 EST.
Respectfully submitted,Lynda Bradley

Boston Terrier Club of Maryland
A 2-day show that had all the facets needed to please anyone. Friday night there was a free Hospitality Party & Club meeting then a Puppy Fun Match. RV hook-ups in short walking distance and very reasonable prices. Break-fast Saturday & Sunday great food, donations went for their Boston terrier rescue fund. Nice lunch’s hot or cold, even Maryland crab soup. Then Saturday night only, their 80th anniversary Awards Banquet. Theme was The1930’s and many ladies came dressed in vintage attire. The tables were beautiful with the clubs new Cookbook for each guest to carry home as a favor. The cakes theme was of the 1930’s a black tie affair. They had an award for best dress theme judged by Patricia Johnson, winner was
Lisa Wakefield and second place Connie McCord. If that’s not enough, then an auction. Saturday a yard sale which had prices from 25 cents for old catalogs and magazines to more expense items. Lots of vendors who displayed lovely art work and craftsmanship items. One of the most impressive things about the Maryland Club was when new Boston fanciers ask questions about our breed, they were greeted as a friend and someone helped them. The club members didn’t mind asking for help outside their membership. There was a display of “Meet The Breed” which judge Mrs. Anne Heir enjoyed looking at and many others. This club works as a team to get the job done and makes sure the Boston terrier benefits. --Patricia Johnson

updated, mailing the annual slate of officer nominations and the annual election ballots. If necessary, I would mail any other miscellaneous ballots and distribute sets of membership mailing labels. Several petitions for additional nominations were received this year, making for a larger slate from which to select a candidate and vote. The election ballot mailing was the largest I have worked on and had so many components to come together, yet almost all the ballots were received timely and calculated according to the stated club timeline requirements. Please continue to inform me of any information changes you might have, as without an accurate address, the BTCA cannot send you mailings comprising of dues notices, ballots or the terrific newsletter. Be advised that if you do not receive your dues notice, you are still held responsible for paying before the June 30th deadline. Otherwise, you will be dropped from membership and will have to re-apply. If there is any question of your dues notice being mailing accurately, please contact me as soon as possible via U.S. Mail or email, to ensure the correct address is listed in the directory and on our documents. ALL changes should be sent to me and I will forward any updates to the club Treasurer who maintains a roster for dues notification purposes. I would also like to remind the membership to utilize the wonderful BTCA website that has been updated this last year: http://www.bostonterrierclubofamerica.org/. It has a new look and is not only user-friendly, but contains a great deal of valuable information for both the
newer enthusiast of the breed to seasoned breeders. Lastly, I serve as the Board Liaison to the Affiliate Club Chair, Byron Elder. Please remember to advise both myself and Byron of any changes of your club’s officers so we can complete accurate mailings and correspondence. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, concerns or comments as I feel I am open to ideas and communications – to relay to the Board of Directors – and ultimately serve the membership. Thank you for your support

Corresponding Secretary Report First let me say I am proud to serve as your Corresponding Secretary and Show Chair. I am continually grateful for the immense support given to me by all of you, and our entire Board. It has been a busy year—a year of transitions, a year of learning, and a year of accomplishments. As the name implies, my primary job is to draft official correspondence on behalf of the Board, and to accept correspondence from members, AKC, and other entities. I particularly enjoy corresponding with members—whether by e-mail, regular mail or via telephone. Some of you have not hesitated to contact me with questions, suggestions, and yes—complaints. That’s as it should be. Never hesitate to let your voice be heard or pose a question. If I don’t have the answer, I have any number of resources at my fingertips to provide you with the correct information. This is my second year serving as your Corresponding Secretary, and
my third year serving as your Show Chair or Asst. Show Chair. I served under Marcia Terry’s tutelage in 2008/2009, and then we reversed roles this year. THANK YOU Marcia. You have been a wealth of information and assistance. As much help as Marcia has been, NOTHING could have prepared me for this role. But everyone pitched in to help, and I wish to thank all of the show committee chairs for an outstanding effort, and the Top Boston and Futurity committees for taking on such an enormous task. And the host committee deserves our deepest gratitude for all their work in helping to make this year’s National an event to remember. In true Southern style, they have been the perfect hosts. American Kennel Club Delegate’s Report The annual meeting of the American Kennel Club was held on Tuesday, March 9, 2010, at the Sheraton Newark Hotel in Newark, New Jersey. The delegates voted on the proposed new Board members in a single vote, which is most unusual. Those elected to serve were Dr. Charles Gavin, Dr. William Newman and Mrs. Pat Scully. Of most importance to the Boston Terrier Club of America is the fact that the AKC Board of Directors voted to indefinitely postpone the proposed breed realignment. I want to thank each of you who signed our petition and wrote individually to AKC opposing

Report of the President I have long said the strength of the BTCA is in our members and our affiliate clubs. I continue to believe that. The Board works for the benefit of the members, and together we work for the betterment of our beloved Boston Terriers. Our membership numbers continue to climb. I am always impressed by the willingness of our members to volunteer. Many of you stepped forward this year to take on new tasks, and many others have raised their hand to say “keep me in mind for future roles.” This year we have welcomed many new members, and more than ever before they come from varied backgrounds and various levels of experience. I’m very happy to see so many people join that are involved in obedience, agility and rally. The affiliate clubs are more active than ever before. They are actively taking part in public education, meet the breed booths, sanctioned matches, and Specialty shows, and rescue. The need to educate the public remains a foremost consideration. We suffered through a year with relatively low entries at both all-breed and Specialty shows, but those numbers are beginning to take an upward turn. If this year’s National is any indication, it promises to be a great year. Collectively we have accomplished a great deal this year. Thank you all for making the BTCA such a strong advocate for our breed. Now – go hug your Boston!

Vice President Report As we all know, the goal of the Boston Terrier Club of American has always been and will continue to be to work toward the betterment of our beloved Boston terriers. Your Board continues to focus on the positive approaches toward this goal whether it be health testing, being the best in performance events or conformation events, individual breeding programs, writing about our Bostons in the AKC Gazette, Junior showmanship or whatever venue we take. There are some great Bostons in the show ring today and we are making an impact in the group rings. Our pets are of the best quality with temperaments that are not to be surpassed. Due in part to the success of our Judges Education programs, we are seeing more breeder judges come to fruition. We occasionally have our stumbling blocks but we pick up the pieces and move forward. I know, as your Board, we can improve and make an even bigger impact for our breed, our members and the communities at large. If I’m serving as your Board Vice President for the next two years, I will hold myself more accountable than ever to the needs of the membership so that trust will once again prevail between the membership and the BTCA Board. To reiterate what I said in my Candidate Resume, I plan to work with the entire Board to ensure we have up-to-date job descriptions for every position on the Board as well as all committees. Another goal I have is to create a policy book which will be on our website similar to what AKC
has on their website. This is a large project but I know it can be done. The number one goal is to continue to work on closing the gap of better communication between the membership and the Board. We can and we will do this! Last, I want to take this opportunity to thank the Atlanta Club. I know they have put in many hours of hard work to make this year’s National special. I would also like to thank our Show Chair, Dane LaJoye and all his show committees for all their hard work. And thank you to our members and others for their entries (I believe we may have set a record this year). And last, of course, thank you Carolyn Gastley (our performance events Show Chair) for all your hard work. This is Carolyn’s last year as our performance Show Chair so please take the opportunity to thank her personally. If anyone has an interest in taking over as the performance Show Chair, please give your name to any Board member.

Awards Committee Report At the Club’s Annual Banquet held in April 2009, certificates were presented to the top 10 dogs in conformation (based on breed points) and agility (MACH competition) for 2008 and the top obedience dogs for 2007. For the first time, awards were presented to the top dogs in Rally competition (based on Advanced B and Excellent B scores). Certificates were presented to dogs earning Register of Merit designations, Gold Health Certificates, and Versatility Awards (i.e. dogs earning both conformation and/or performance titles). Ice trophies were made and presented to the owners of 30dogs who earned Champion Titles and to the owners of 64 dogs who earned Performance Titles. A program was prepared and distributed at the dinner listing all these awardees. Among the new titleholders were 3 dogs who were the first Boston Terriers to hold a particular title as well as the first Boston Terrier to have earned both a CH and MACH title. Conformation, rally and agility awards for 2009 and some obedience awards are being prepared for presentation at the annual banquet in Atlanta, Georgia. As a reminder, the deadline for applying for any of these awards is February 15 of each year, all qualifying events or titles must be completed by December 31 of the prior year and awards will cover only titles earned for 2 years through the end of the last calendar year. The award application forms may be found on the BTCA’s website at www.bostonterrierclubofamerica.org. Below is a description of the various awards offered by the BTCA. Note
that when reference is made to being a member of the BTCA, membership in good standing in an affiliate regional club is also included. If an applicant is only a member of a regional affiliate club, a letter from the secretary of that club attesting to that person’s good standing must accompany the application for the award.
REGISTER OF MERIT This is a designation for those dogs that have produced a certain number of champion get. Specifically, a dog must produce 5 champions and a bitch must produce 3 champions in order to be designated in the Club’s Register of Merit. An owner of such a dog/bitch must be a member in good standing of the BTCA at the time of application and must apply for the Register of Merit designation on a form that is found either in the Coast to Coast or on the Club’s website (www.bostonterrierclubofamerica.org). This is an honorary designation of our Club and once awarded entitles the owner to place “ROM” at the end of the dog’s or bitch’s name. It is inappropriate for nonmembers or for members who did not apply to use this designation for their dog/bitch. Our Register of Merit program also allows for the addition of one or more stars when a dog/bitch produces additional champion get, 5 for dogs or 3 for bitches, beyond the get required for a ROM. There is no limit to the number of stars a dog or bitch may acquire. However, again, the same rules apply; you must be a member in good standing and you must make the appropriate application for the additional star(s). Stars are given in units of 5 for dogs and 3 for bitches. There is no provision for partial stars
or numbers of champion get in the ROM designation. Register of Merit designations are given once a year at the Annual Awards Banquet and a certificate is awarded to the owner of such dogs or bitches. Other than applying, there is no cost to the owner to receive this award. Completed applications should be sent to:

CHAMPION AND PERFORMANCE AWARDS This awards program allows members to apply to receive a small trophy or plaque which contains the dog’s name and title accomplished, whether it be in conformation, obedience, including rally, or agility. The Club also permits awards for titles in other areas that are recognized by the AKC. In order to get one of these awards a member must apply and send a nominal fee (currently $10) for the award. For this purpose, the Club does not keep track of titles earned by members’ dogs, so it is imperative that you apply to get this award. Again the applications can be found in Coast to Coast or on the Club’s website and must be postmarked by February 15. Applications should be sent to either:

the breed realignment! There were other parent clubs that felt as we did concerning the possible new groups. However, despite the fact that we were against the composition of the group, many all-breed clubs also fought the change. Their primary reason was from an economic point of view. Smaller clubs would be unable to hire more judges, and the time travel element played into the opposition also. The economy has affected the financial picture of the AKC this year. Litter registrations were down by 12% and dog registrations were down by 9%. There was an increase in the amount of events held this past year by 3%, but the total entries were down by 1.5%. These facts caused a loss in revenue of$10.2 million dollars. The AKC publications also took a loss this year due to subscriptions and ads being down. In adjusting the budget, the Board was able to decrease the operating expenses and payroll by over 9%. One of the controversial issues this year was the Canine Partners program that allows mixed-breed dogs owners to participate in AKC Agility, Obedience and Rally events. As your delegate, I voted against this item. The legal department, as well as many local clubs, worked diligently to oppose many discriminatory dog legislation bills across the nation. Public education was a primary goal of the AKC this year. A lot of time and effort was devoted to this area. Many new dog registries have been established in the U.S. and other countries. AKC is dedicated to maintaining the most accurate stud book in the world. Forty senators have endorsed the CGC program this year. Programs, such as CAR, have been
expanded and offer a GPS system at this time. AKC has contributed over $1 million in support of research programs. It has been a busy and interesting year, to say the least. I am representing all of the members of the Boston Terrier Club of America. Please contact me with any ideas or concerns that you may have. Thank you again for your support in rejecting the proposed breed realignment.

Through the generosity of Nestle Purina PetCare, the research
presentations are being posted on- line so that anyone with an interest may view them. These are posted at the AKC-CHF website (http://www.akcchf.org/) which also features many articles and podcasts of interest to breeders and owners.7. Several months of work resulted in the development of the 2010 BTCA Health Survey. The last survey was conducted in 2000. The health surveys are vital in that they provide a “snapshot” of the health of our breed, allowing us to see the progress made in solving previously known health problems. Additionally, the surveys help us to detect emerging problems or increasing occurrence of previous problems within the breed. This knowledge is used to target BTCA funding of health research for our breed. Previous surveys have used printed forms that were mailed to members and included in the Coast to Coast with members mailing in completed survey forms. Through the cooperation and generosity of the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, Canine Health Information Center, and AKC-Canine Health Foundation the 2010 survey is available for completion on-line and at no cost to BTCA for formatting or data collection. This on-line survey format allows breeders and owners to more quickly complete the survey and guarantees complete confidentiality for those who respond. The survey may be accessed at http://www.offa.org/surveys/survey_boston.html Those who wish to complete a paper copy of the survey may do so by contacting the BTCA Health Committee and requesting the forms.

the breed realignment!

The conference included two days of presentations from scientists whose research as been funded by AKC-CHF as well as many opportunities for networking with the researchers, AKC-CHF personnel, and representatives from other parent clubs.

Judges education Committee The number one priority continues to be the further development of a seminar with a truly comprehensive view of the breed, which will ensure that we produce outstanding judges. Each year we find ourselves being able to add certain elements of the breed standard that we have defined as being intrinsic to the education of the new judges. In addition, our statements on prioritization are vital to the proper adjudication of the breed. A natural outgrowth of the seminar is the fervor generated in a number of breeders who are firmly dedicated to ‘giving back to the breed’. These individuals who have made a solid contribution over the years, are without a doubt the linchpin of this movement. The increasing number of breeders who attend our seminars is tangible proof that we are moving in the right direction. As Chairman, I want to personally thank our Vice Chairman Mr. Michael Staley, who has articulated a clear vision for moving our new judges in the right direction, ably assisted by his wife Mrs. Beverly Staley. Mrs. Joyce Fletcher has joined the ranks of breeder-judges and is a welcome addition to our group. Mrs. Lisa LaMere is the daughter of the late, and famous breeder-judge, Mrs. Ethel Braunstein. She brings tremendous experience to this group and is legendary in her presentation of Boston Terrier movement..

It was also published in Camino Book 2007-2009 also an advertisement about the OFA tape everyone needs a copy of. Some other articles I wrote: 125 Years of Purebred Dogs, Past Achiever’s Give Hope For Future, Older Dog Deserves A Good Home, Puppy Ears Going Flip Flop, A Safe Whelping Environment, Happy Puppy On Table and Walking Down Memory Lane. Some of the special events written about in articles were: Mr. Carl Gomes made history being the only owner/breeder/handler/writer, to ever judge Boston Terriers at the WKC Show. Bob & Eleanor Candland have done many great things, one being the first breeders to represent the Non-Sporting Group for the AKC Breeder of the Year Award in 2008. Many of you don’t know Pamela Preston has the only Boston with 12 championships, I can’t imagine achieving any of these goals. This is only a few of the great things our breed has done in the present. We are the future fanciers, lets do great things and go forward improving the breed. Junior Showmanship This year for junior handler of the year award we had only a few entries. It saddens me to see so little interest from our youth. And I have a feeling, like with most 4-H clubs, after-school activities, and sports programs, our youth are loosing interest in activities that don’t deal with iPods, cell-phones, and computers. As I’m writing my thesis for my masters degree and jumping head first into youth participation research, I have come to find that the main reason our youth are taking to technology and not the outdoors and/or hobbies and sports, is because of the lack of support and knowledge from the adults. And
truthfully, I find this prevalent in our breed. I’ve had many breeders and owners support me through the years, however, it seems like no one goes out of their way anymore to spend five minutes with a junior and help them with their dog, or give them pointers, or stand ringside and clap. The support from parents, breeders, owners, and especially youth role-models; professional handlers, is something that it lacking and needing attention. As I say every year, please remember that these youth are the future of our breed, and your support, knowledge, and help is what will push the youth to breed and show stronger, healthier, more correct and balanced Boston Terriers. Best of luck to all juniors next year, and let us have an entry of junior handler’s next year to break the records!

The Affiliate Clubs are dedicated to the welfare of the Boston Terrier and support the BTCA to be the best breed club that advances the ultimate goal of BTCA” Last years annual meeting was held in April at Crown Plaza in Southbury, CT. !6 delegates attended with some delegates representing more than one club. Pat Schmitt from Metro Washington BTC recorded the minutes. The meeting
was lively and interesting. Each delegate gave a report of their clubs activities for the year. As always a dues reminder was made as some clubs have overlooked this in the past. Legislation was briefly discussed as bills were pending in many states that could affect Boston breeders in those states. Interestingly, AKC has launched a “New Canine Tracking System”. This new service enables each of you to check status of canine legislation in each of the 50 states as well as any Federal legislation. To review go to www.akc.org/caninelegislation and click on “AKC Government Relations Tracking” icon. If you have questions contact AKC at (919) 816-3720 or [email protected] Entries were down in many sections of the USA but it was encouraging to see good entries at some of our Affiliate Clubs. In closing I enjoy and appreciate being your Affiliate Club Liaison and thank all Clubs for their excellent Newsletters. I welcome any and all suggestion on how we can improve inter-club communications.

Rescue Committee Report To date rescue is still receiving many phone calls per day from owners in dire financial situations who need to surrender their Boston Terriers due to the problems in the economy. There has also been a recent influx of calls and emails from Boston Terrier owners who are wanting to know if rescue can provide any type of temporary fostering services until the owner is able to get back on their feet as well as calls from owners who are wanting financial assistance in order to keep their beloved pet.
Due to physical health issues, I have been unable to personally foster in some time now, but I have received reports from other rescues that foster homes are still overflowing and finding additional foster homes remains very difficult. Funding is still one of the most challenging problems facing rescues and due to a steady increase of donations due to the lagging economy; this situation continues to become worse. Peggy Jackson will be sending a more detailed report on the status of the national committee as well as a fundraiser that she has been coordinating. Peggy continues to be my mentor and a very integral part of making sure that things happen and in assisting me with my duties since my illness. I am very grateful to her for all of her help. In closing, I remain hopeful that the rescue committee will be able to financially assist struggling rescue groups in the coming year and we will find a way to recruit additional foster homes and resources for the groups.
