2 Head coach Kenneth Cooper will begin his tenure as Park University women’s basketball coach on Tuesday, Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m., in Marshall, Mo., as the Pirates take on Missouri Valley College. This season will mark the 31st in the history of the women’s basketball program at Park and the Pirates will have a new head coach on the sideline for the first time in 14 seasons. Joe C. Meriweather announced his resignation after the conclusion of the 2009-10 season and left the program after 13 years as head coach and was the winningest coach in school history with 128 career wins. The Pirates finished seventh in the AMC a year ago and finished the season 5-25, but Cooper says this year’s team will have a different look than some of the women’s basketball teams in the past. “My expectations no matter what are always high,” said Cooper. “I’m not going to put a number on how many wins we are going to have or how far we go in the postseason, but I do know we are going to be aggressive. We are going to be aggres-sive on defense and we are going to be aggressive on offense. At the end of every game, no matter if we win or lose I want our opponent to feel like they were in a dog fight for 40 minutes. “If our players at the end of the season are learning things on the court and play-ing the right way, then I would consider our season a success. We want the crowd and the opposing team to recognize that this team will give it their all for 40 minutes.” The Pirates return their three leading scorers from a year ago in Dominique Hayes, Hilary Walker and Oasha White. Hayes led the team in points with 12.3 and rebounds with 8.4 per game and was named to the American Midwest Conference first-team last season. Walker was an AMC Honorable Mention All-Conference selection a year ago with her 11.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per game and led the team in steals with 60 and blocks with 50. White, who has played in 56 games in her first two seasons at Park, averaged 8.4 rebounds last year and led the team in assists with 62. Also returning for Park is senior Shareikka Theus-Downey. The Joplin, Mo., native knocked down a team high 20 three-point baskets a year ago and missed only two games, starting in 10. Two juniors that will return to the squad this season are Kristian Doods and Halima Ramsey. Both saw significant time in 2009-10 as Dodds played in 28 con-tests and Ramsey competed in 29. Ramsey was stifling from the free-throw line last year, making 22-of-25 attempts for a percentage of 88, which led all players. Dodds knocked down 14 three’s last year, second most on the team, and averaged 4.6 points per game. The final two returners for Park this season are sophomores Lauren Hatten and Sarah Hall. Hatten had some injury issues last season and played in only 10 games with one start, but Hall saw much more time on the floor in 22 games with two starts. Hall is a 5-10 forward that can grab some key rebounds for coach Cooper and Hatten is a 5-8 guard that is a great on ball defender and can spot and knock down a jumper when called upon. The 2010-11 team will also feature four newcomers including Brianna Beridon-Polley, Nicole Wilhite, Trinity Vickers and Vivian Holcomb. Cooper is very excited to see what the future holds with his first recruiting class here at Park. “I have seen some great athleticism out of our newcomers and they all have the ability to shoot the jumper at a high percentage,” said Cooper. “They are all very un-selfish as well and that is huge. They are really coming together as a team and helping each other out on and off the court.” All four newcomers should see plenty of time out on the floor this season, Beridon-Polley is a stellar point guard option for Cooper along with Vickers and Wilhite is the ideal power forward that can have a big inside presence but can knock down the three-point shot at a high percentage. Holcomb is a combo small forward-power forward player that was a standout player before signing at Park at Ben Davis High School in Indianapois, Ind. Her high school team accumulated a record of 100-7 in her four years and Holcomb was named an Indiana Top 100 recruit her freshman, sophomore and junior seasons.

2010-11 Preview

Coach Cooper will look for Oasha White to be a team leader and help this year’s squad reach new heights in the conference.

Nicole Wilhite looks to be a solid inside and outside threat for Park in her first season for coach Cooper.

Park University named Kenneth Cooper to lead its women’s basketball program on May 14, 2010, making Cooper the 10th head coach in the history of the program.

”I’m extremely excited to have a person of Kenneth’s character and leadership qualities to be a member of the Park University athletic department and I’m looking forward to working with him,” said Director of Athletics Claude English. “Kenneth comes highly recommended and I know he will provide the type of leadership that will represent the program and the University in a very positive way.” Cooper spent three years as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at NCAA Division I Mercer University in Macon, Ga., from 2007-2010, and was instrumental in assisting head coach Janell Jones reinvigorate the Bears’ program. A proven winner, Cooper’s work at MU was another successful stint in his coaching career. Cooper was a part of a staff that inherited a 5-25 team and then had to endure a 4-26 record its first season with the Bears. However, the 2008-09 season, in which the Bears went 17-14, proved to be the greatest turnaround in the country that year, according to CollegeRPI.com, by making a 153 point swing (315 to 162) in the RPI from that inaugural campaign with Mercer. The team was picked to finish eighth in the Atlantic Sun Conference by both media and coaches pre-season polls, but proved the experts wrong with a fourth place showing and advanced all the way to the A-Sun semifinals. The 2009-10 Bears – despite an injury-plagued season – managed a second-straight trip to the A-Sun tournament and posted a record of 14-16, on a team with just two seniors on the entire roster. The 31 wins amassed by MU in the past two seasons are the most in any back-to-back seasons by Bears’ teams since 1995-97. Along with his duties as assistant coach at Mercer, Cooper has excelled as the recruiting coordina-tor for the Bears in each of his seasons. In those three seasons, student-athletes recruited by Cooper have earned a first-team All A-Sun award, three second-team all-conference honors, an A-Sun Defen-sive Player of the Year, eight A-Sun Player of the Week awards and 18 academic all-conference selec-tions. Statistically, MU has had a top-five scorer in the A-Sun in each of his years. This season, the team had the No. 2 and No. 7 scorers in the league, as well as the steals leader. As a part of Mercer’s 2010-11 recruiting class, Cooper brought in three players that were ranked in the top 50 by ESPN in the southeast Region. Prior to joining the Bears, Cooper spent three seasons as an assistant with Seminole State College, helping the team reach the Bi-State Conference Tournament each year during his tenure. Cooper compiled a 51-40 (.560) record during his three-year stint as an assistant coach with Seminole State. The team improved each season, going from 10-21 in 2004-05 to 16-13 in 2005-06 to 25-6 in 2006-07. The Belles won the Bi-State West Conference championship last season with a 14-0 mark at home. Seminole State also finished third at the 2007 NJCAA Region II Tournament. Also serving as recruiting coordinator for Seminole, Cooper brought in and coached numerous players that received accolades. He tutored six all-conference nominees, three first team all-region performers, a regional Player of the Year and a second team All-NJCAA member. Prior to his arrival at Seminole State, Cooper played at the University of Montevallo in Monteval-lo, Ala. After redshirting his freshman year, Cooper helped the Falcons win a Gulf South Conference Tournament title during his senior season when he served as team captain. Montevallo also reached the NCAA Division II South Regional finals as the Falcons finished with a 23-10 record in 2004. He received the University of Montevallo Sportsmanship Award in 2004. A native of Fayetteville, Ga., Cooper starred at Fayette County High School before his collegiate playing career at Montevallo. At Fayette County, he served as team captain his junior and senior sea-sons while earning four varsity letters. Cooper graduated from Montevallo in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology. Cooper and his wife Erin, reside in Kansas City, Mo.

aformer standout at Mercer University, Cristin Seymour joins coach Cooper’s first staff at Park University as the assistant coach. Seymour comes to Park after a two-year playing career at NCAA Division I Mercer University, where she played for head coach Janell Jones and at the time assistant coach Ken-

neth Cooper. Seymour graduated from Mercer in May of 2009 with a degree in Communications. Seymour began her playing career in her home town of Freeport, Bahamas by playing youth basketball in a special program called, Helping our Youth Through Education and Sports (HOYTES). The organization helped Seymour learn to play basketball and soccer and helps volunteer for HOYTES in her free time back home. She was a standout soccer player as well, playing for the Bahamas Junior National Team. Her squad earned a trip to play in the United States, competing in an international tournament in Cocoa Beach, Fla. Seymour graduated from Grand Bahama Catholic High School, where she was named the Female Student-Athlete of the Year twice. She played basketball for head coach Gladstone McPhee. She spent her first two years of college at Miami-Dade Junior College, playing for coach Susan Summons, then went on to finish her career at Mercer. In her first year with the Bears, Seymour’s squad went 4-26, but in the 2008-09 season, the Bears went 17-14, proving to be the greatest turnaround in the country that year, according to CollegeRPI.com, by making a 153 point swing (315 to 162). She currently resides in Kansas City, Mo., and is taking graduate school classes at Park in the Public Administration field. She has one younger brother, Cadre, and her parents are Crispin and Tania Seymour.

Getting to Know Coach Coop...What are your expectations for your first year as a head coach…“My expectations no matter what are always high. I’m not going to put a number on how many wins we are going to have or how far we go in the postseason, but I do know we are going to be aggressive. We are going to be aggressive on defense, we are going to be aggressive on offense. At the end of every game, no matter if we win or lose I want our opponent to feel like they were in a dog fight for 40 minutes. If our players at the end of the season are learning things on the court and playing the right way, then I would consider our season a success. We want the crowd and the opposing team to recognize that this team will give it their all for 40 minutes.”What will a Coach Kenneth Cooper team look like out on the floor in 2010-11...“I would say our team will look like a hard nosed scrappy team. You will hopefully see a lot of diving for loose balls and a lot of talking on defense. On offense I hope you will see a lot of fluid motion in and out of our sets and a lot of energy. But hopefully our defense will take care of business and create easy opportuni-ties for our offense.”Who have been your biggest coaching influences in the past…“I am a big Nolan Richardson and Mike Anderson fan and I’m a fan of the 40 minutes of hell defensive mentality. That’s why I did an internship with Coach Anderson while he was at the University of Alabama-Birmingham (UAB). Other coaches that have taught me a lot are my college coaches at University of Montevallo. Coach Jeff Daniels, who recruited me to that school and assistant coach Roy Dixon taught me a lot. Both of them changed my life and got me into coaching and they helped me want to change other people’s lives through coaching.” What are you most excited about with your new team here at Park…“I’m excited about the way they have picked up the new defensive scheme. I didn’t think they would pick up some of the stuff we have been working on so early, but they have and that is really good for us. I have coached at two other schools and I have not seen a team learn the new system as quickly as this team has. Their attitudes have been great this offseason and they have really bought into our system of basketball.”On his first recruiting class at Park…“I have seen some great athleticism out of our newcomers and they all have the ability to shoot the jumper at a high percentage. They are all very unselfish and that is huge. They are really coming together as a team and helping each other out on and off the court.”On bringing a winning attitude to Park women’s basketball…“Coming into this position I knew I wanted to come in and change the image and culture of Park women’s basketball a little bit. I like to sit down with each of the players quite a bit and talk to them about what I expect out of them on the floor as a basketball player and as a student in the classroom. In those meetings I allow them to know me and who I am. I have always believed that if you can develop a relationship on a more personal level with your players they will work harder for you and give you everything they’ve got. I let them know I’ve been where they are at and tell them my life experiences and how I got through things to be where I am today.”

The 2009-10 season also marked the first season for the Pirates to compete in the American Midwest Conference since the 2000-01 season. Meriweather had two all-conference players on his final squad in Dominique Hayes who was named to the AMC All-Conference First Team and Hilary Walker was named to the AMC Honorable Mention squad. Park began the season in a tough spot, dropping its first nine games of the sched-ule. But responded with a nice win over non-conference opponent Friends Univer-sity at home, 59-53. After the win over Friends, Park then dropped six games in a row before their next victory. That victory came in conference play on Jan. 19 on the road against Harris-Stowe State in blowout fashion, 68-42. In that contest Park shot the ball exceptionally well, shooting 42-percent from the field and three Pirates scored in double figures. Hilary Walker scored a game and team high 16 points and Shareikka Theus-Downey scored 13, while shooting 3-of-4 from behind the arc. Dominique Hayes provided the Pirates with 10 points and 11 boards. After the win against Harris-Stowe the Pirates began to hang tough in ball games, losing to eventual AMC Champion William Woods only by 10 at home and lost to Hannibal-LaGrange, 68-65, on the road. Then Park picked up their second conference win of the season also on the road at Stephens College on Jan. 28. Park defeated the Stars, 67-58, and Walker again led the way with 16 points and had a career high eight blocks on the day. Hayes and Stefany Jones both had 12 points and the Pirate defense caused 30 Stephens College turnovers. After the win over Stephens, Park then took on a stout McKendree team at home in a nationally broadcast contest at the Breckon Sports Center. The College Fanz Network came to Parkville and selected Park’s men’s and wom-en’s basketball games against McKendree as their national game of the week. The Park Pirate faithful packed the Breckon Sports Center for the two games and 1,000 fans came through the turn styles. The Park women eventually lost to McKendree, 74-43, but it was still a memo-rable day for all involved. After the McKendree contest, the Pirates played an inspired game against Mis-souri Baptist on the road, losing in double overtime to the Spartans, 75-74. After two more losses to Columbia College and the College of the Ozarks, Park defeated Harris-Stowe at home, 77-62. Hayes had a monster game with 19 points and 10 boards and Hilary Walker added a double-double with her 14 points and 10 rebounds. For the second straight game against Harris-Stowe, Park shot 42-percent from the field. Then Park dropped another tough one to William Woods on the road, 80-66, and lost a home AMC game to Hannibal-LaGrange, 64-54, before defeating Ste-phens College, 75-54, on senior night. Park sent seniors Traci Oden and Stefany Jones out with a win as the Pirates dismantled the Stars by 21. Oden finished the night with nine points and Jones had six. Then it was on to the AMC Tournament, as Park was tabbed the No. 7 seed in the tourney and had to face No. 2 seeded Columbia College in the first round. Park lost to the Cougars, 96-60, and finished the year with an overall record of 5-25.

Joe C. Meriweather led the Park University women’s basketball team for 13 years and left the program as the winningest coach in school history with 128 wins.

Dominique Hayes was impressive last season in confer-ence play, averaging 15.3 points and 9.3 rebounds per game against AMC teams in the 2009-10 season.

22 Park University calls Parkville, Mo., and the Greater Kansas City Area home, offering students the features of both small-town life and the flashing lights of the big city.

With a population of just more than 4,000, Parkville allows students the small-town lifestyle and tightly knit community often times associated with small college athletics and the NAIA. Originally a trading post on the Missouri River, Parkville grew as Kansas City boomed in the late 1800s, which included the found-ing of Park University. Both the University and the city get their names from Col. George S. Park, who played a key role in the early development of the area. Today, Parkville’s historic downtown district coupled with new shopping areas to the north and east gives Park University students two great entertainment opportunities within the area. Parkville sits within the Northland of the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area, which encompasses 15 counties, nine of which are in Missouri and six across the state line in Kansas. The Northland is locally referred to as “north of the river”. Contained wholly within Missouri, it encompasses portions of Clay County including the northern half of Kansas City, Mo., and the cities of Parkville, Liberty, North Kansas City and Gladstone. As a whole, the Kansas City Metropolitan Area is situated at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers, often referred to as Kaw Point, straddling the state border between Missouri and Kansas. The Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area, anchored by Kansas City, Mo., is the 27th largest in the United States, with an estimated population just shy of 2 million.

A tradition-rich city known for its barbecue and storied sports history, Kansas City is currently home to Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals, the Kansas City Chiefs of the Na-tional Football League, Major League Soccer’s Kansas City Wiz-ards and the Kansas Speedway, which hosts several NASCAR and IRL events throughout the year including one Sprint Cup Series event in the fall. Kansas City is also home to the Kansas City T-Bones inde-pendent league baseball franchise and the Kansas City Explorers of World Team Tennis. The Sprint Center and the Power & Light District in the downtown area is one of the region’s top entertainment areas. The Sprint Center also houses the College Basketball Ex-perience, which includes the College Basketball Hall of Fame. A few blocks away sits Municipal Auditorium, home to the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. Additionally, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athlet-ics moved its offices downtown in the summer of 2007. Kansas City is also known for its historic shopping dis-tricts, including Westport and the Country Club Plaza, which is one of the world’s largest outdoor shopping areas designed for motor-vehicle traffic. Commonly referred to as “The Plaza,” it is home to one of the nation’s largest holiday light displays between Thanksgiving and January. In the Northland, Zona Rosa has become a popular shop-ping district, while Town Center and The Legends at Village West keep shoppers occupied in the Sunflower State.

From 1981 to 1984, English was the head men’s basketball coach at his alma mater, Rhode Island, where he was named Atlantic-10 Conference Coach of the Year in the 1981-82 season. His coaching tenure at Park was highlighted by the Pirates’ run to the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament semifinal round in 1997-98, which ended with a school-record mark of 27-8. English was honored at the national tournament with the Charles A. Krigel Award for outstanding sportsmanship, while his team was awarded the Dr. James Naismith-Emil S. Liston Sportsmanship Award for the team recognized as most sportsmanlike at the tourney. After a stellar collegiate playing career for Christian College in Dallas, Texas, and the Univer-sity of Rhode Island, English was selected in the NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers where he played the 1970-71 season. English also played in the Eastern Basketball Association for the Hartford Capitals, the affiliate team for the Philadelphia 76ers. In 1973-74, English won the Eastern Basketball Association Championship with the Capitals. He was a three-year captain at Hartford. As Director of Athletics at Park, the Pirates have captured 47 conference championships, and in each of his 14 previous seasons as athletics director, at least one Park program has ad-vanced to NAIA postseason play each year. Also during his run as Director of Athletics, 77 student-athletes have been named NAIA All-Americans, and 161 student-athletes have earned Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete honors. The purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participation in athletics serves as an integral part of the total educational process. The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each member institution, the value of the conferences and Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) structure, and the benefits of membership in a national association. The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmosphere and reality where fair distribution of overall athletic opportunity and resources, proportionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student-athlete, coach or athletics administrator is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men’s sports program would be pleased to accept as its own the overall participation opportunities and resources currently allocated to the women’s sports program and vice versa. The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 25 conferences and the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.), the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports. Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive difference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the latest cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of innovation. Through Champions of Char-acter, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator are committed to the true spirit of competition through the five core values: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.

The American Midwest Conference (formerly known as the Show-Me Collegiate Conference) sponsors championships in 13 different sports: base-ball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s track and field, and volleyball. The purpose of the American Midwest Conference is to promote the positive ideals and objectives of athletics, to provide an organization of colleges and universities with similar foundations to engage in athletic contests on an equal basis, to serve as a forum to formulate and solve common problems, to enhance and preserve athletics in their true perspective and to promote athletics in an academic environment. The AMC is a member of the National Associa-tion of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The nine member institutions that make up the AMC include Park University (Parkville, Mo.), Columbia College (Columbia, Mo.), Hannibal-LaGrange College (Hannibal, Mo.), Harris-Stowe State University (St. Louis, Mo.), McKendree University (Lebanon, Ill.), Missouri Baptist University (St. Louis, Mo.), Stephens College (Columbia, Mo.), Williams Baptist College (Walnut Ridge, Ark.) and William Woods University (Fulton, Mo.) Play NAIA

It’s your heart. The engine that

won’t quit. Not here. Not now.

It’s what drives you from the first

moment of the game to the final

screaming second. Because

when you’re an athlete, you live

for play. Student-athletes in NAIA

colleges and universities across

the country play their hearts out

every time they put on their school

colors and step up to compete.

They are part of an

organization that understands an

athlete’s need to dig deep, to bond

and to go beyond. That same

drive is at the heart of the NAIA,

where the sweat never dries, the

turf is still shredded, and the court

is always scuffed with a thousand

sole marks.

Hear that pounding?
