2010-11 USF Bulls Women’s Basketball

USF WBB Inks Another Solid Recruiting ClassUniversity of South Florida head women’s basketball coach Jose Fernandez

announced another solid recruiting class during the Fall 2010 early signing period.

Fernandez announced the signing of three players to National Letters of Intent.

The Bulls have inked 6-4 center Caitlin Rowe from Canberra, Australia (Gulf Coast

C.C./Lake Ginninderra College), 5-10 guard Tamara Taylor (St. Petersburg,

Fla./Boca Ciega H.S.) and 5-7 guard Shalethia Stringfield (Jacksonville,

Fla./Potter’s House Christian H.S.).

Rowe is a very mature student-athlete and has developed her skills on the hard-

wood at Gulf Coast Community College (GCCC) in Panama City, Fla. She carries her

outstanding work ethic onto the floor, and competes at the highest level. Rowe

played for Australia’s under-20 national team and was among the leaders in the U-

20 world championships in points (2nd averaging 20.2 ppg), rebounds (1st averag-

ing 13 rpg) and blocked shots (1st averaging 2.0 bpg). She has a great face up

game, soft touch to about 16 feet and can catch and finish in traffic.

At GCCC, Rowe averaged 3.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 0.7 blocked shots per game

– second on the team – while helping the Commodores to a 32-1 record and the

National Junior College Athletic Association National Championship with current

USF standouts, and twin sisters, Andrea and Andrell Smith.

So far this season, Rowe is netting 6.3 points per game and 3.3 rebounds per out-

ing. She also leads the team in blocked shots (1.3 bpg) and is second in assists (1.7

apg).

“Caitlin will bring added depth to our front line and brings a wealth of experience

from Gulf Coast Community College,” said Fernandez. “She won a national junior

college championship as a freshman and her experience playing international

basketball, and going up against high-level competition, will make her an immedi-

ate contributor to our program. She is able to guard interior post players because

of her size and offensively she can create mismatch problems because she can step

out and shoot the three.”

Taylor is an athletic off-guard who flourishes in an up-tempo style of offense,

which will be ideal here at USF. Her biggest offensive threat is her ability to catch

and shoot from very deep range. Tamara led her team to the 5A state champi-

onship game last year scoring a combined 39 points in the semifinals and finals.

She is a back to back First Team All-Pinellas County selection.

“One thing that Tamara does extremely well is shoot the ball from the perimeter,”

said Fernandez. “She scores points in bunches and it’s always great to sign a play-

er of her caliber especially being a local player from the bay area that can come

in and help us with our perimeter shooting. That’s one of the areas that we need-

ed to address with this class.

Stringfield is an extremely tough combo-guard that penetrates and finishes in traf-

fic, a one-on-one creator with consistent offensive game, an excellent on-ball

defender. In addition, goes well beyond the three-point arc.

Stringfield came into her senior year at Potter’s House Christian ranked as the 19th

best guard in America and the 95th best player overall in America by ESPN

HoopGurlz.

“Shalethia will fit into the way we play because she is an up-tempo guard,” said

Fernandez. “She can defend all 94-feet. I really compare her to a player that we

had a few years ago here, Anedra Gilmore. She has the same similar playing style

and athleticism and she brings a lot of intensity on the floor. The good thing about

Shalethia is that she is a freshman and we will have her for four years.”

Tiffany Conner Notes Tiffany Conner, widely considered by the coaching staff as one of the hardest

working players on the team, recorded a career-high 14 points against Morgan State

on Nov. 20 ... Conner was the only player on the roster, that night, that had a

decent shooting game ... She was 5-8 from the field, including 4-7 from behind the

three-point arc ... Her four treys against the Bears also marked a career-high.

Conner is third on the team in steals with 29 on the year ... She has recorded at

least one steal in 14 of the 24 games she has played in this year, and has had mul-

tiple steals in 10 games.

Conner played her first game against Seton Hall on Jan. 25 after sitting out two

games - against Marquette on Jan. 16 and West Virginia on Jan. 22 - after suffering

a concussion against DePaul on Jan. 11.

USF Tabbed 11th In Preseason BIG EAST Coaches Poll USF was selected to finish 11th in the preseason BIG EAST Conference coaches

poll at the league’s annual media day in New York City ... Defending National

Champion Connecticut picked up all but one first place vote ... West Virginia was

picked second and Georgetown chosen third ... Notre Dame and St. John’s were

picked to finish fourth and fifth, respectively, while DePaul, Rutgers, Louisville,

Syracuse and Marquette round out the top 10 ... The rest of the poll is as follows:

12. Providence, 13. Pittsburgh, 14. Villanova, 15. Cincinnati, 16. Seton Hall.

Dome Sweet Dome USF has fared well against its opposition on its home floor ... The Bulls have

turned in an impressive 82-33 overall record and a 55-10 mark in non-conference

games at home dating back to the 2004-05 season.

USF is 22-24 in BIG EAST games at home - since joining the conference for the

2005-06 season - and 27-23 in league games dating back to the 2004-05 campaign.

Jose Fernandez - USF’s Career Leader In Wins USF head coach Jose Fernandez is already the program’s all-time winningest

coach, now he has made his mark as the all-time winningest coach in USF basket-

ball history ... On Dec. 28, 2008, with the Bulls’ win over Jackson State, Fernandez

surpassed former men’s coach Bobby Paschal with 128 career wins ... Paschal logged

127 wins in 10 seasons (286 games) ... Fernandez is currently 168-164.

USF is one of six BIG EAST schools where the winningest basketball coach is a

women's basketball coach ... It joins Connecticut (Geno Auriemma), Notre Dame

(Muffet McGraw), Rutgers (Theresa Grentz), Seton Hall (former head coach Phyllis

Mangina) and Villanova (Harry Perretta).

Fernandez Etches His Name In USF’s Record Book To say that being the head women’s basketball coach at USF has been a work in

progress is certainly an understatement ... Jose Fernandez boasts a 168-164 career

coaching record ... Fernandez reached the mark despite having to include a 4-24

campaign in his first year at USF (2000-01) ... Fernandez, however, has really left

his mark on the program with what he has done over the past seven seasons ...

Fernandez has led the Bulls to seven-straight postseason appearances - the WNIT in

2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010, and the NCAA Tournament in 2006.

Against Vermont on Dec. 28, 2006, Fernandez became the USF women’s basket-

ball program’s all-time leader in career wins, surpassing former head coach - and

current general manager and head coach of the Washington Mystics of the WNBA -

Trudi Lacey (1988-96) who held the top spot with 88 career wins.

Fernandez surpassed Lacey, who held the mark since 1996, accomplishing the feat

in his 186th game, while Lacy took 215 games for 88 wins.

Fernandez vs. The Top 25 USF is 6-43 vs. teams ranked in the Top 25 of either the Associated Press or

ESPN/USA Today polls since Jose Fernandez took over prior to the 2000-01 season.

The Bulls faced their first nationally ranked foe of the 2010-11 campaign on Dec.

2 when No. 1/1 Connecticut visited the Sun Dome ... The Huskies handed USF a 80-

54 loss ... The 5,144 fans that filed into the Sun Dome marked the second largest

crowd to even see a USF women’s basketball game.

On Jan. 11 the Bulls faced their second Top 25 foe of the 2010-11 campaign, drop-

ping a 77-61 decision to No. 14/21 DePaul in Chicago ... USF was handed a tough

76-68 setback to No. 8/8 Notre Dame on Feb. 5 in Tampa, and also suffered a 67-38

loss to No. 16/17 Georgetown in Washington, D.C. on Feb. 8 ... Most recently, the

Bulls were handed an 80-60 defeat by No. 22 (ESPN/USA Today Top 25) on Feb. 16.

Construction Underway On The Pam And Les Muma Basketball Center Construction of the Pam and Les Muma Basketball Center (photos on the previous

page) began on March 3, 2010, a project that is part of a $3 million USF facility

upgrade, which includes both a men’s and women’s basketball practice gymnasia,

team support facilities including locker rooms and lounges, video/film rooms,

offices, meeting rooms, athletic training, strength training and equipment manage-

ment facilities.

The footprint for the 50,000 square foot Muma Center is located on the south side

of the Sun Dome ... The basketball teams will continue to compete in the Sun Dome

and practice in the Sun Dome and Corral while construction occurs on the facility

... The Muma Center is part of a $30-million package of facility upgrades for USF’s

athletic district that includes facilities for football, baseball, softball and soccer.

On March 26, 2008, USF alumni, civic leaders and local philanthropists Pam and

Les Muma gave the University of South Florida athletics department a $3 million gift

as the lead effort on a Basketball Center for the men’s and women’s programs.
