DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY

In Business Administration:Preeya DayaThesis Title: An investigation into the relationship between diversity, inclusion and performance: an empirical study in a corporate South African organisation

Preeya Daya has worked both internationally and locally, with a focus on enhancing business performance through HR, including leadership, performance management, employee engagement and human resource information systems. She is employed by SA Breweries Ltd where in her current capacity of HR Projects Manager, she designs and implements HR change management projects to enable business initiatives. She has an Undergraduate and Masters Degree in Human Resource Management. For her PhD research she investigated the relationship between Diversity, Inclusion and Performance in a corporate South African context. The research was motivated

by her observation of diverse talented individuals losing their full potential through conforming to the dominant corporate culture; and the subsequent business cost resulting from this disengagement. While diversity refers to the representation of diverse employees, a culture of inclusion moves away from assimilation (minority adopt majority culture) towards valuing individual contributions. Her research found that when diverse employees felt included, their individual performance was positively affected. Further, race, position, the location of the employee’s workplace and the department he/she works in had a significant relationship on his/her perception of inclusion. In contrast, gender, age, tenure, religion, physical ability, sexual orientation showed a non significant, weak correlation with individual perception of inclusion. These findings suggest that race, position, location and department affect an individual’s perception of inclusion while gender, age, tenure, religion, physical ability and sexual orientation do not relate to an individuals perception of inclusion. Finally, her research proposed a model for driving a diverse and inclusive environment through outlining crucial inclusion elements which should be managed at an individual, inter-personal and organisational level.

Supervisor: Professor K April (Graduate School of Business)
