Our ambitious Annual Fund goals would not have been achieved without the tireless efforts of our Co-Chairs, Helaine Schweitzer and Terry Tao, and our fabulous parent volunteer committees. More than 50 volunteers committed their time and energy to connect with their peers, with 100% of the Board of Trustees, 100% of the faculty and staff, and 90% of our parents contributing to this community-wide effort.

Many of the initiatives and accomplishments of the school would not be possible without the philanthropic support of our community. We would like to acknowl-edge the tremendous contributions of our trustees, our parent and alumni volunteers—all of whom serve as dedicated ambassadors of the school. We benefit from your dedication and passion for Head-Royce each and every day.

The 2010–2011 year marked a new era for Head-Royce. We welcomed the leadership of Rob Lake as our new Head of School, and he embraced the community and role of fundraiser-in-chief with great flourish. The results speak for themselves, with the Head-Royce Annual Fund crossing the $1 million dollar mark for the first time.

Anchored by leadership challenge gifts from members of the Head-Royce community, the Annual Fund raised an ambitious $1,160,492—exceeding the goal by 16%. More than any other fundraising effort, the Annual Fund supports the heart of our mission, providing essential funds for our robust academic programs, ensuring ac-cess to a Head Royce education through our financial aid program, and supporting our extraordinary faculty.

The Heads Up program, Head-Royce’s partnership with the Oakland Unified School District now in its 24th year, exceeded its fundraising goal of $200,000 having raised $210,000. We deeply appreciate the support of our families, as well as friends beyond the Head-Royce com-munity who support this life-changing program.

endowment status as of June 30, 2011In Fiscal Year 2010–2011, total contributions to the Head-Royce permanently restricted endowment were $256,020. Endowment transfers to the school’s operating fund amounted to $564,867. The average one-year return on the en-dowment investment was 4.1%, and the overall market value of the endowment reached $15,951,551 on June 30, 2011.

Head-Royce Annual Fund : : Donors by Level

The Head-Royce Annual Fund was an unprecedented success in 2010–2011. For the first time in the School’s history, more than $1 million was raised, providing essential funds for programs that are core to our mission: need-based scholarships, faculty professional development grants, support for student enrichment programs, as well as additional resources for athletics, music and the visual arts. By June 30, 2011 a total of 999 donors had contributed $1,160,492—exceeding last year’s Annual Fund by 37%—more than $300,000!

We extend profound thanks to all who made this possible—our generous challenge and leadership level donors, wonderful families, alumni, grandparents and friends. Together we made it happen! The donors listed below helped us achieve this important milestone in 2010–2011:

Heads Up Program : : Donors

Heads Up was founded in 1987 through a partnership between the Oakland Unified School District and Head-Royce School. The program is the cornerstone of Head-Royce’s effort to promote community engagement and civic purpose, and help advance high achieving, socially responsible youth. As its primary goal, the Heads Up program works with Oakland Public School students throughout their middle school years, keeping them enthusiastic about learning and providing academic and social guidance. Over the years, contributions to the program have provided educa-tional enrichment and mentoring for more than 700 low-income public school youth in grades 6–8. In 2010–2011 Heads Up helped to support an enrollment of 90 students who participated in a six-week summer session followed by monthly academic support and enrichment throughout the 2011–2012 school year.

Through the enduring generosity of numerous foundations and individual donors, Heads Up fundraising reached $209,250, exceeding its budgeted goal—a tremendous achievement! Of this total, $17,000 was raised through the annual Walkathon (with thanks to event co-chairs Elizabeth Glenewinkel, Marcia Pillon, and Susan McCully) while the Heads Up “Big Night Out” event brought in $57,000.

A memorial gift to Head-Royce pays respect to a loved one or friend. In the case of memorial gifts that are not designated for a specific fund, Head-Royce has a long-standing tradition of placing these donations in the school’s endowed Anna Head scholarship fund. When a memorial donation is made, the school informs the deceased individual’s family about the memorial gift without mention of the value of the contribution.

The Society is named for the school’s founder, Miss Anna Head and her brother-in-law, Harvard professor and eminent philosopher, Josiah Royce, for whom the Royce School was named. The Society honors and grate-fully acknowledges the generosity of individuals who include Head-Royce in their estate plans.
