Westminster Catawba Christian School (WCCS) is a ministry of Westminster Presbyterian Church and is governed by a Board of Trustees under the Policy Governance Model®. The Head of School is the one employee of the Board and is responsible for the management of WCCS. The basic principle of Policy Governance is the creation of End Statements, which are the mission-related policies that embody the Board's long-range vision. Below are the End Statements for Westminster Catawba Christian School.

Westminster Catawba Christian School exists so that students are devoted followers of Jesus Christ, scholars of His truth, and stewards of His gifts.

Followers of Jesus Christ who…• are committed to a personal relationship with Him • know and apply God’s word • love and serve their fellow man • exhibit godly character, the fruit of the spirit

Scholars of His truth who…• excel academically to their personal best • articulate a biblical worldview and defend the Christian faith • possess the skills to think critically, logically, and independently • develop proficiency in a college-prep core curriculum • are equipped for a lifetime of learning

Stewards of His gifts who…• use all of their gifts for God’s glory • use all resources well • build on their strengths and manage their weaknesses

The Head of School works collaboratively with the WCCS Leadership Team to oversee the management of our school. The Academic Team provides oversight to the academic programming at WCCS and is made up administrators and faculty from all areas of our school. Members bring their expertise and perspective to discussions concerning the instructional programming at our school.

FROM THE ADMINISTRATION

“He makes all things new”

As we celebrate the 2011-2012 school year, our theme verse came from Revelations 21:5, “He makes all things new!” We know that 2 Corinthians 5:17 reminds us, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, the old has gone, the new has come.” When we allow the Holy Spirit to work in our lives through His saving and sanctifying grace, we experience newness of life that brings glory to Jesus Christ.

In a similar way, when a Christian school community allows the Holy Spirit to work in our lives through His saving and sanctifying grace, we experience newness of life that brings glory to Jesus Christ. When a Christian school community allows the Holy Spirit to have His way among us, we experience His presence through revival and what we call The Path of Renewal.

Over the past couple of years Westminster Catawba Christian School has experienced The Path of Renewal through re-visioning, re-vitalizing and re-organizing our school to meet the needs of 21st Century students and families. Based on parent feedback from a school-wide survey, our strategic

approach has focused on closely examining our setting of tuition, teaching strategies and utilization of technology.

From the results of this survey, we also made upgrades to our facilities that included the installation of interactive Prometheum white boards for all classrooms on the Catawba Campus and Mead white boards and mounted projec-tors on the Westminster Campus. We completed a comprehensive lighting project for our gymnasium and athletic field, along with upgrades to our technology infrastructure and security systems.

It is exciting to see these transformations taking place and we are grateful for the changes that are enhancing the instructional experience for our students, faculty and families. Our ongoing commitment is to be a school that is Christ-centered, student-focused and family-oriented. We look forward to serving together in Kingdom education at Westminster Catawba Christian School.

With Eternity in View,

Ray Casey, Head of School

FROM THE BOARD

Leadership“Stand up and bless the LORD”

Nehemiah 9:5 says “Stand up and bless the LORD your God from everlasting to everlasting. Blessed be your glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.” We have a lot to stand up and bless the Lord for as we reflect on his faithfulness this past year, and as we move forward in the 2011-2012 school year.

We are excited about the addition of three new Board members, Steve Kane, Felix Norman and Bob Clark. Steve has served faithfully on the Board in the past for many years. For Felix and Bob, it is their first tour of duty, but they are learning very fast and will be great contributors.

It is amazing to hear the testimonies of how the Lord has led people to WCCS and we are thrilled to welcome 91 new students, representing 70 new families this year. We also celebrate the 415 returning students, repre-senting 300 families and are grateful that we are retaining over 88% of our students, a 5% increase over last year’s retention.

The Lord has continued to bless WCCS financially as donations to the school increased 55% over the previous year. Long term debt was also reduced by more than 40% and it is our goal to have this debt completely eliminated by the end of 2013.

Last spring our Board of Trustees created new “Ends Statements”, mission-related policies that define the Board’s long range vision. We did this so that the school’s vision and core values are clearly reflected in how we govern and administrate. In the coming year, The Board will continue this focus of reviewing, simplifying and revising policies and will stay committed to collectively seeking God’s will and direction for the school.

We thank you for your commitment to Christian education for your children. We are here to serve you and do all that we can to help WCCS be a great blessing to your children and your family. Thank you for your continued support of the Board, the Administration and the School.

Serving Him,

Steve Moore, Chairman of the Board of Trustees

During recent times, issues including a declining economy, rising unemployment and financial crisis have created a climate of financial uncertainty. However, by God’s grace and the responsible management of what God has entrusted us with at WCCS, the school’s financial position and stability has significantly improved. Several key financial indicators of financial stability are shown above.

DEVELOPMENT AT WCCS

The office of Development at WCCS had another busy year coordinating fundraising efforts and communicating opportunities for giving to current families and friends. Thanks to the many volunteers that helped us along the way. We couldn’t have done it without you! Below is an overview of highlights from Development:

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND CHRISTIAN CHARACTER (AACC) SCHOLARSHIPCongratulations to Sara Brandon, the 2010-2011 recipient of the AACC Scholarship. This scholarship was established in 2008 and awards one rising senior with a $1,000 scholarship towards his or her senior year’s tuition at WCCS. In order to apply, an 11th grade student must have a cumulative GPA of 4.0 or higher, submit an 800-1200 word essay describing someone of outstanding Christian character, and strive to model Christ in their daily life in a way that is evident to all.

ANNUAL FUNDThis year’s Annual Fund raised $93,850 thanks to our many generous donors! WCCS was able to meet the most pressing needs of our school by purchasing new textbooks, increasing funds for scholarships, and improving technology at our school.

BOOSTERTHON FUNRUN This past year, the Boosterthon Fun Run raised over $17,000 for WCCS. This was a great community builder for the entire school as students learned valuable lessons about community, Christian character, fitness and leadership. We appreciate the help of all of our volunteers, students, parents, faculty and staff that helped make this event a success.

CORPORATE SPONSORSHIPWe had many families and friends that supported WCCS with their business advertising dollars during the 2010-2011 school year. Our corporate sponsorship program was a great success with over $25,000 going toward advertising at WCCS. The best part of this was that the proceeds from these dollars primarily support fine arts and athletic programming at WCCS.

GRANDPARENT’S DAYWe had over 85 grandparents come out in April to enjoy Grandparent’s Day on the Catawba campus. The keynote speaker was Dr. Mel Wines, WCCS faculty member. Thanks to the many volunteers that helped behind the scenes to make this event possible. Our Grandparents are GREAT and make up nearly 40% of our donor base at WCCS! Go Grandparents!

HIGH COTTON SPORTING CLAYS SHOOTThe 21st Annual High Cotton sporting clays event was another HUGE success! In the last 20 years, this event has raised over $333,250 for our school. Thanks to board member, Mark Anders, WCCS student trappers and all of our volunteers and participants who helped with this wonderful event. To find out more information about High Cotton, please visit their website at www.highcottonclassic.com.

MISSION TRIPOver $34,000 was raised to send a team to the Dominican Republic for the fifth year. In June, 20 students and 10 adults traveled to Fountain of Life School in Juan Tomas, Dominican Republic. Each year, the mission team works hard to gather much needed supplies for the classrooms at the school in Juan Tomas. This year, they were able to take down 30 bags of school supplies for teachers and students. This tremendous gift was much appreciated by teachers and students at the Fountain of Life School. The missionaries were amazed at the students’ hard work and their ability to make lasting relationships with the Dominicans.

Page 9: 2010-2011 Annual Report

PTF (PARENT/TEACHER FELLOWSHIP)We are so grateful to the many volunteers that made our PTF such a success! The focus of PTF during the 2010-2011 school year was to assist in building community among WCCS families, staff, school organizations and our local community. "Doughnuts with Dad" and "Muffins With Mom", Teacher Appreciation Week, Spring Fling, and our Back to School Bash were all events sponsored by the PTF. Through fundraising efforts of a cookie dough sale and Spirit Night events at local restaurants, approximately $6,500 was raised to serve WCCS in various ways throughout the year. The PTF decided to restructure for the coming year to better serve our teachers and staff.

SENIOR SERVICE TRIPThe 2011 senior class took a mission trip to Grenada for their senior trip. Over $35,000 was raised so our senior class and several teachers and chaperones could spend a week working at the Youth with a Mission (YWAM) base in Grenada. The week was filled with powerful times of worship, prayer, fellowship, and outreach in partnership with YWAM-Grenada.  The seniors were involved with reaching out to the impoverished community of Rose Hill, the Dorothy Hopkins home for those with physical and mental disabilities, and the Bel Air and Queen Elisabeth orphanages. WCCS seniors stepped up to the challenge of cleaning, organizing, and building bunk beds for future ministry at the Grenada YWAM base.  The students also had the opportunity to draw closer to the Lord during team ministry times in which the YWAM staff prayed for them. The trip was a life-changing event that forever changed our senior’s perspective on all that God is doing in their lives and around the world.

TECHNOLOGY UPGRADESWCCS was blessed with over $218,000 in donations toward technology. Computer labs were added to each campus and both campuses had data cabling installed to provide faster, more reliable data connectivity in every classroom. Every classroom on the Catawba Campus was outfitted with Interactive Promethean Boards and five classrooms on the Westminster Campus were given Mead Boards this year. In addition, A/V projectors were installed in each classroom on the Westminster campus. This new technology allows teachers to incorporate technology in the classroom as students learn through hands-on and interactive experiences. All faculty and staff also received new laptops so they could be more effective in and out of the classroom. Teachers and students are excited to have this new technology!

WESTMINSTER CUP GOLF TOURNAMENTThe 7th annual Westminster Cup Golf Tournament was held in April at the Rock Hill Country Club and was a tremendous event. We had 56 golfers raising funds for WCCS and ROAR sports ministry and our school was able to bring home the Cup for our last tournament together. WCCS raised over $18,000 to impact the lives of children and families for Christ. Many thanks to the generosity of sponsors, players, and friends.

WAYS TO GIVE

THE ANNUAL FUNDThe WCCS Annual Fund is the core giving program through which funds are raised. It is the one area in which parents, grandparents, faculty, staff and friends of the school are greatly encouraged to give financially. These unrestricted funds are used for a variety of academic needs that directly impact student development and achievement. Each year the administration sets the priorities for the most pressing needs of the school.

DESIGNATED GIFTSA designated gift is a gift received from a donor who supports Westminster Catawba Christian School and wants his or her gift to be used for a specific designated purpose at the school.

CORPORATE MATCHING GIFTSCorporate matching gifts are available at many companies, and you may be able to greatly enhance your personal donation to WCCS by taking advantage of this easy option. To determine if your company is one of the hundreds of participating matching gift companies, please contact your company’s human resource office.

GIFTS-IN-KINDA gift-in-kind is typically an item or service donated to Westminster Catawba Christian School to help further its educational mission. Gifts-in-kind can include, but are not limited to, new (or nearly new) computers or printers, books for the library, construction material and services such as landscaping, painting, etc…

PLANNED GIVINGPlanned giving includes a variety of philanthropic strategies that help you provide for Westminster Catawba Christian School while also benefiting both the charity and the donor as part of a donor’s tax planning and/or financial planning. Some planned gifts include charitable trusts, gift annuities, donor advised funds, life insurance and bequests. Planned gifts range from small to very large, from simple to complicated, from one-time gifts to life-long planning, from immediate gifts to deferred gifts. Contact Edwin Barnes with Westminster Ministries Foundation at 803.366.8880 or [email protected] for more information.

CONTINUE THE EXCELLENCE

As we conclude the annual report for the 2010-2011 school year, we are continuing to pursue academic excellence through the 2011-2012 Annual Giving Campaign. This year your gifts to the Annual Fund help bridge the gap between the cost of tuition and the actual cost to educate each child.

Please prayerfully consider supporting all God is doing at Westminster Catawba Christian School through a gift to the Annual Fund. The board of trustees, administration, faculty, staff, and students of WCCS appreciate your continued support!
