2010-11 Annual Fund VolunteersThe success of the 2010-11 DWS Annual Fund would not have been possible without the help and hard work of many exceptional volunteers. Through one-on-one conversations, phone calls, e-mails, and handwritten notes, these parents helped to “tell the story” of the importance of the DWS Annual Fund and the exciting things it enables on campus. Many thanks to all of these wonderful supporters! We’d like to give special recognition to the committed campus leaders and grade captains who worked tirelessly to keep everyone on track for the good of our school and students.

Mark Lane, 2011-2012 Chairman Board of Trustees

Dear Friends,

I am proud to write to you as the 2011-2012 Chair of the DWS Board of Trustees. Because of the strong leadership and vision of those who have gone before me, our school and students are succeeding in new and exciting ways in spite of the economic headwinds that have buffeted our area and the nation. I pledge to continue this work to ensure that Deerfield-Windsor remains the premier college-preparatory school of Southwest Georgia and that our students are prepared to excel in the world beyond our doors.

Our campuses have experienced an exciting facelift, completed just days before the start of the new school year. It is a testament to the hard work of Larry Jordan and his facilities crew and the tremendous cooperation of our faculty and staff that this effort was so successfully executed in such a restricted period of time.

We said good bye to a number of retiring faculty and staff in 2010-2011 – Dot Eames, Ruth Henry, Mariruth Whittle Thomas, and Brenda Murphy. Each of these individuals shared their love and competencies with our school and our children for many years. It is a rare thing to find such commitment and stability in today’s world – and a testament to the wonderful culture of our school. In their place we’ve hired new staff, and I am confident that they will soon come to appreciate the many things that make DWS a special place.

Deerfield-Windsor is well positioned - our enrollment is strong, our finances solid, and the support for our school among families, grandparents, alumni, and the community is beyond measure. We have an exceptional group of individuals committed to serving the school as Trustees this year, and I am most appreciative of their support. In addition, numerous parents are engaged daily as volunteers helping with class activities, lunch room relief, fundraisers, and so much more.

Thank you for your commitment to Deerfield-Windsor School, and for making education a priority in your family and in your giving. Together we can continue to do great things for the education of our children.

Sincerely,

Mark J. LaneChairman, DWS Board of Trustees

LearningToday….LeadingTomorrow

In the words of one of our Middle School students whose suggestion for a school slogan was chosen this past year, Deerfield-Windsor students are preparing for success – for college and for life.

The 2010-2011 school year was remarkable in many ways. Our Literary Team placed second in the State in the Georgia Independent School Association competition. Our musicians were selected for various honor festivals, and our writers, visual artists, and orators scored numerous awards and honors locally, statewide, and nationally. Our athletic teams combined for an overall third-place finish among twenty-nine teams in the largest school category in the GISA.

We are so grateful to all of the parents, grandparents, past parents, alumni, faculty and staff, and friends who have contributed to make all of this success possible. Through gifts to the Annual Fund, you help to bridge the gap between the actual cost of educating a DWS student and tuition. This enables us to provide technology, lab equipment, playground apparatus, and library resources as well as professional development opportunities to keep our faculty at the forefront of teaching techniques. In addition, gifts to the DWS Endowment Fund help to ensure that DWS will be vibrant and solid for years to come.

Two years ago, we launched our participation in the Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program. The outpouring of support from our community has been overwhelming. This program allows Georgia taxpayers to redirect some of their tax dollars to a scholarship fund to help students attend DWS. We had 16 GOAL Scholars in 2010-2011 - solid school citizens with a combined 3.0 grade point average. We will add another 12-15 GOAL Scholars for 2011-2012. If you have not already done so, I urge you to consider participating in this exciting program.

This summer has seen extensive renovation on both campuses – redesigned art rooms, refurbished classrooms and rest rooms, a resurfaced track and practice tennis courts, new practice rooms for our band, and improved ventilation at Lower School. New home and visitor bleachers will be installed at Webb Field before the start of the new football season, and more than twenty new Promethean boards (interactive, touchscreen white boards) have been added to complement the seventeen boards already in place.

We look forward to an exciting 2011-2012 school year and request your ongoing support to enable us to continue the work of preparing tomorrow’s leaders.

Sincerely,

Dave Davies, Headmaster

DWS Gets a Facelift!

Bulldozers, painters, electricians, and construction workers were busy this summer working feverishly to provide both campuses with an exciting range of renovations. Both campuses received a fresh coat of paint, new ceilings and lighting, new carpet, and refurbished bathrooms. In addition, we’ve expanded and improved the art and band rooms, installed new bleachers on the football field, resurfaced the track and tennis courts, and enhanced drainage for our athletic fields. WOW!

We are extremely proud of our school and of these improvements. Please stop by either campus for a tour, and be sure to join us on the new bleachers at Webb Field to cheer our Knights on to victory!

Teaching Excellence

Three Deerfield-Windsor teachers were chosen out of thousands from across the country to serve as Advanced Placement (AP) exam graders over the summer. This was a high honor for our school and a wonderful opportunity for these faculty members.

Advanced Placement courses are college level classes available to students in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. Deerfield-Windsor currently offers AP courses in all major subject areas – English, math, science, history, art, and world languages. Students are not required to take AP classes. Instead, these courses can be appropriate options for those looking for a more challenging academic experience in specific areas of interest and ability.

The fact that three continuing DWS faculty members and a new addition for 2011-2012, Mr. William “Steven” Brohawn, have served as AP readers is a testament to their mastery of their subject areas and the general quality of staff found on our campuses.

DWS Teachers Serve as National

AP Readers

Advanced Placement is a designation given by the College Board (the same people responsible for the SAT and PSAT). AP curricula and teachers are accredited by this organization. The College Board also designs an exam for each AP course. Every student across the country enrolled in a given course takes the same standardized test at the same time in May. Students are graded on a scale of 1-5 by a group of AP “readers” who gather in the early summer to assess the exams taken. A score of 3 or higher may earn a student college credit. As a result, the College Board is quite selective as to who it will invite to review these exams.

Debbie Newsome Allen – AP Composition“The absolute BEST is watching a student who begins with little confidence blossom into an effective argumentative writer, and raise her/his essay level from a 4 to an 8 or 9 (top level) . . . the level of maturity, depth of discussion, and height of dedication these students put forth. It is a blessing!”

Alyx Hall – AP Biology“(As an AP grader) You get to talk with other experienced AP teachers from around the country. You get different points of view, different teaching methods, plus a shared concern and empathy for the difficulties that come with the job. I also learn something new every time I’m a reader – about the exam, about teaching AP in particular, and about biology in general.”

Irmgard Schopen-Davis – AP Literature“The benefit of grading AP is that it allows me to be part of a community of professionals who are committed to the same goal: helping students to read, write, and think at the highest level possible, so that they will enter the competitive college environment with carefully honed skills.”

DWS Family,

The 2010-2011 Clemson University basketball team just finished

another grueling but successful season, and I wanted to take a moment to

express to the entire DWS staff, faculty and student body my appreciation for

a wonderful high school experience at Deerfield-Windsor School and share how

that experience has helped me here at Clemson University.

In 2004, I came to Deerfield-Windsor as a young ninth grader with one

goal in mind – to play basketball at the collegiate level. At the time, I stood only

5-foot-2 and I wasn’t quite sure how a player of my stature would make it on

the high school level, much less a major college level. Well, fortunately for me, by

making the quality decision to attend DWS for my high school years (2004-2008),

I had an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of the game under arguably the

best basketball coach in Southwest Georgia – Coach Gordy Gruhl.

What’s more important though, is the quality of education that I was exposed to at DWS. With

Deerfield being a top-notch college preparatory school, I had the benefit of getting the best of both

worlds! Deerfield-Windsor not only prepared me for the rigors of the college academic life at Clemson

University, but the athletics instruction and coaching I received from Coach Gruhl also had me prepared

to step on the Clemson campus as a “5-foot-something” freshman and play every single game in the

ACC...

I can honestly say that the experiences I received at DWS have been tremendous and extremely

critical to my current success as a college student playing basketball on a very high level . . . In addition, I

also feel those high school experiences have prepared me for life beyond college and I plan to give back

to DWS in some small way once I have established myself in my career after college.

On the academic side, there’s a TRUE STORY I’d like to share to give an example of how

the academic preparation I received at DWS helped me early on in the classroom at Clemson: As a

freshman attending summer school my first year at Clemson, I was in class with dozens of other new

student-athletes from a variety of sports. The professor separated the class into four groups and would

ask questions to individuals in each group. If we got the question correct, we would be awarded points;

if we answered incorrectly, we did not. Even though the professor would ask individuals in each group

questions, the individual could turn to a team member for assistance if he/she didn’t know the answer.

Well, after about 30 minutes or so of this question-and-answer period, I noticed something. Every student

in my group would turn to me for the answer . . . after I answered the fourth or fifth question in a row

correctly, this huge football player leaned over and whispered, “Hey man, how you know all this stuff?” I

answered, “I graduated from DWS.”

This story helps to illustrate to those DWS students who feel the work at the school is too hard

or the homework is overwhelming that it eventually pays off . . . It certainly is paying off for me.

. . . I greatly appreciate each and everyone at DWS and those in the community who now tune in

to Clemson basketball whenever we’re fortunate enough to be on TV.

Deerfield-Windsor has meant the world to me! . . .God bless all of you . . . I’m living my dream!

Sincerely,

Andre Young,

DWS Class of 2008

We would like to take this time to shine the light on a very special group of people. These individuals have demonstrated a real heart for our school, giving year-in and year-out to make sure that our students, teachers, coaches and staff have what they need to be successful in the classroom, the lab, the studio, the field, and the stage.

The consistency of this support helps to give our school a solid base on which to build. Thank you for making Deerfield-Windsor School a priority.

A special “Thank You” goes out to all of the parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends who stepped forward during an exciting fundraising campaign initiated by a single donor willing to commit $10,000 to the DWS band program. In the end, “Band Aid” was successful in raising needed funds and awareness for this dynamic music program.

The Spring Prism Concert was the culmination of a great year for the arts at Deerfield-Windsor, wrapping up this campaign and showcasing the talents and hard work of our students in the visual and performing arts. We are most appreciative to the Albany Museum of Art for their cooperation in providing the perfect setting for this event.

“As a band parent, I was thrilled to participate in the DWS Band-Aid Campaign. It not only raised awareness for the band, but it raised awareness as to the talent, achievements and unlimited potential of our students.”- Karen Richter, DWS Band Parent

“I am overwhelmed by the generosity of the DWS family. The funds you provided put quality instruments in the hands of our percussion and low brass students, helping us to educate the next generation of band students and improve the sound of the DWS band.”-Scott Young, DWS Band Director

There are many ways to do more than you ever thought possible to ensure a wonderful education for generations to come in Southwest Georgia.

Talk with your lawyer or financial advisor about these and other options, or contact Laurie Allen at 229-435-1301, ext. 249 or

[email protected].

•A gift that costs nothing during your lifetimeConsider naming Deerfield-Windsor School as a beneficiary in your will, IRA, or life insurance policy. This can be a powerful legacy – continuing the work of the school for years to come.

•A gift that may offset your required 2011 IRA distribution If you are 70 ½ years of age or older and have not taken your 2011 required minimum distribution, you can move those dollars directly from your IRA to DWS and most likely bypass the income tax on the distribution.

•A gift that provides you with increased incomeYou can transfer cash or appreciated, low-yielding assets to a Charitable Remainder Trust that will provide you with greater income, a charitable deduction, and allow you to diversify your assets with minimal tax impact, and be part of securing a strong future for Deerfield-Windsor School.

Alumni

New DWS Alumni Board Established!

A school with nearly fifty years of history and several thousand alumni deserves an organization devoted to its graduates. For this reason, we are excited to announce the official formation of the DWS Alumni Board. This group will work to reconnect former students with one another, celebrate the rich history of their alma mater, and support the ongoing mission of Deerfield-Windsor.

Our inaugural Alumni Board consists of the following: President – Heath Fountain’93 Vice-President – Jennifer Wise Ricks ‘87 Secretary – Elizabeth McKinney deRosset ‘90 Treasurer – Meredith Jordan Pennington ‘95 Decade Reps:

The board has been structured so that every school decade has representation in shaping the association to be something positive and engaging for all DWS alumni. These committed board members are already busy planning Homecoming activities, and discussing great ideas for future events.

If you would like to get involved or have thoughts and suggestions for making this newly formed alumni association a success, please contact Margaret Ellis at [email protected]. We also encourage you to complete page 21 of this publication and to visit us online at www.deerfieldwindsor.com, Alumni where you can reconnect with old friends and classmates.

24 | Deerfield -Windsor School

In 2009, Deerfield-Windsor School began working with a state-approved scholarship organization called the Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program. Through GOAL, Georgia state tax payers and C-corporations can redirect a portion of their tax dollars to benefit children in southwest Georgia and Deerfield-Windsor School. GOAL participants receive a state tax credit against their Georgia income tax liability and a federal charitable deduction.

More importantly, donors to GOAL can designate that their dollars be used in support of scholarships at Deerfield-Windsor School. We are extremely thankful to the many individuals, couples, and C-corporations who have participated in GOAL on behalf of DWS – making thousands of dollars available for financial awards to deserving students seeking a better education. GOAL dollars provide scholarships for academically capable students coming from public schools whose families need tuition assistance to attend DWS.

To learn more about GOAL, we invite you to visit our website or goalscholarship.org. A member of the DWS Advancement staff would also be glad to answer any questions or provide the necessary forms (229-435-1301).

Although the program’s yearly deadline is December 31, we believe that the 2011 state cap of $50 million will be reached in October or November. Once this cap is reached, the program will be closed for the remainder of the calendar year. If you have not already done so, we strongly encourage you to submit your forms as soon as possible to ensure your ability to participate in 2011.

Cathy Darby is joining the board as a new trustee. Cathy is vice-president of Victory Investments, Inc. and chairperson since 2006 of Atlantic Fidelity Insurance Company in the Cayman Islands. She is an active board member for Theatre Albany and a deacon at Covenant Presbyterian Church. Cathy has also volunteered her time as a Grade Chair for the DWS Annual Fund and been supportive of the DWS Band. She has been a Deerfield-Windsor parent since 1998, and her youngest child, Ellis, is currently enrolled in the eighth grade.

Walter M. “Sonny” Deriso, Jr. is returning to the DWS board after a long absence. He served as Chair when his children were enrolled, and now rejoins as the grandfather of three lower school students. Sonny is currently Chairman of Atlantic Capital Bank and Atlantic Capital Bancshares, Inc. Mr. Deriso began his business career as a practicing attorney in Albany in 1972, and was a partner in the law firm of Divine, Wilkin, Deriso, Raulerson, & Fields until 1991, when he became President of Security Bank and Trust Company of Albany, a Synovus bank. In 1997, he was elected Vice-Chairman of the Board of Synovus, a position that he held until his retirement in 2005. Mr. Deriso has served on the boards of numerous organizations. In addition to his current position on the Board of Trustees of Emory University, he is also Chairman of Campaign Emory and Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Emory University Center for Ethics.

C. Wayne Holley, M.D. is serving his first term on the board. Wayne moved to Albany in 1996 to practice as a thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon. Wayne grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he attended the McCallie School. From 2003 to 2009, Wayne served on several committees on the McCallie Board of Trustees. Caroline, his daughter, is currently in the eleventh grade at DWS.

Anne has been involved in a number of community organizations including the Adopt-A-School Program, Habitat for Humanity, Graceway, and IS KIDS. Anne has been active in numerous ways at Deerfield-Windsor, serving as an Annual Fund Grade Chair, PTO Silent Auction Chair, and Room Parent.
