2010-11 Wilson Center performances

The 2010-11 season was one of the most important in the Wilson Center’s history, both financially and artistically. It is no overstatement to say that the past three years have been tremendously difficult for many types of businesses, arts organizations included. We are very pleased with the fiscal results for 2010-11. In fact, the Center achieved historical bests in individual and corporate giving, besting all pre-recession years. We are profoundly grateful to our supporters and partners for continuing to demonstrate their faith in both our mission and vision.

Artistically, the Center presented programs with particular noteworthiness such as The Seasons Project that featured the Venice Baroque Orchestra, the world’s leading early music chamber orchestra and also the metro-Milwaukee premiere of the Mark Morris Dance Group. Mr. Morris’ company and his choreography are generally acknowledged as among the truly elite internationally. A sold out performance and the most media coverage for any singe event in the Center’s history reflected well on MMDG’s first appearance in the area.

However, while the Center is always busy with current activity, future planning is also a constant. Expanding our capacity for outdoor programming—a key objective of our current strategic plan —is underway. At the time of the conclusion of the 2010-11 season, basic presentations for approvals to begin a significant re-grading and landscape architectural overhaul of our outdoor venue were underway. 2011-12 is a season where future vision begins to meet reality. Stay tuned!

Once again, thank you to our patrons, our Board of Directors and other volunteers, and our indefatigable staff who are omnipresent it seems for our many activities that ultimately define the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts as a vital and exciting regional cultural center we can all be proud to call our own.

Warmest regards,

The Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts attempts each season to expand its program offerings, both in variety and quality. Our flagship offerings, the Performing Arts Series and Special Appearances, showcased internationally renowned artists in 2010-11 such as jazz superstar Dee Dee Bridgewater who is, perhaps, best known to non-jazz aficionados for her breakout role in Broadway’s The Wiz in the 1970s. Arguably the best chamber orchestra in the world, the Venice Baroque Orchestra presented a program featuring American violinist Robert McDuffie in virtuoso performances of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons and a new work written for McDuffie by none other than Philip Glass, The American Seasons.

We were very fortunate to be able to program one of the world’s most highly respected modern dance companies, the Mark Morris Dance Group. Known for his exacting choreography with its nuanced match to musical gesture, live performance of three of the four pieces was exhilarating. This performance was the first in MMDG’s 30-year history in the metro-Milwaukee region. The Wilson Center’s presentation of this company garnered more pre- and post-performance media coverage than for any single event in the Center’s history. And, what would December be like at the Wilson Center without some holiday programming? The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra made its annual pilgrimage to the Center for a rousing performance of holiday fare that got the entire audience singing along with the Orchestra. Sometimes, one just needs some good, old fashioned tradition to brighten the collective mood. In addition, Canadian Celtic powerhouse, Leahy, performed to two sold out houses. This is very much a family affair, and given the surprise performances by several children of Leahy members, a multi-generational dynasty is clearly in the making!

We have been presenting more artists from the popular music world of late, and by the reactions of audience members, this has been much appreciated. Front man for the country-western band the Mavericks, Raul Malo displayed an uncommon range of styles and a voice of rare beauty. The ever vital Maceo Parker performed perhaps the longest concert in the Center’s history last May. As a key component of the James Brown and George Clinton funk movement, Maceo proved he is as relevant and exciting a performer as he was in any past decade. His post-concert Artist Dialogue was just icing on the cake. And, who would guess that The Pointer Sisters can still out-sing and out-dance performers a third their age!? That is exactly what they did at the annual Big Event fundraiser. People are still talking about the performance and that is how it should be.

There were many other superlative performances during the course of the season that deserve much more description and praise, but additional highlights were jazz great Karryn Allison with her beautiful and touching sense of communication, 18-year old pianist Daniel Ko’s powerful recital performance, and solo cellist Sæunn Thorsteinsdottir’s nuanced and virtuosic readings of unaccompanied cello works.

Finding ways to top the artists of the 2010-11 season will be tough, but then again, that’s half the fun of discovering other artists that engage, move us to tears, and leave us breathless with excitement.

VISuAl ArTS Visual art activity continued to flourish at the Wilson Center in the 2010-2011 season. Under the direction of a dedicated leadership committee, the Center’s Visual Art Program has continued to gain exciting momentum to further engage current supporters, as well as attract first-time audiences to the Center. The Center’s signature exhibit space, the Ploch Gallery, presented a diverse season of five Wisconsin artists selected by the Center’s newly established Curatorial Committee. The Lynn Chappy Education Wing exhibit space featured work produced by youth and adult students, as well as by area school children, art teachers and educational art collectives.

Committed to supporting the professional development of local artists, the Center also held professional development workshops for artists in conjunction with the Milwaukee Artist Resource Network. Topic areas explored included developing an artist statement, basic accounting, using social media, grant writing and photographing artwork.

A strong studio art program offered a wide variety of new classes this season, as well as ongoing opportunities to refine skills in core subjects. In October 2010, the Center offered a West Bend Art Tour for area residents to enjoy a rich sampling of Wisconsin art. Activities began with a tour of the integrated artwork on display at the Wilson Center, followed by a van trip to the Museum of Wisconsin Art in West Bend. The event concluded with a visit to the West Bend Mutual Insurance Company Headquarters to tour its extensive 530+ piece art collection.

Hidden river Art festival September 17−19, 2010The fifth annual Hidden River Art Festival drew more than 3,000 guests to enjoy an array of works both inside the Center and under tents on the Center’s grounds. A quarter of the artists participating at the 2010 Festival were new to the event, exhibiting works of painting, printmaking, sculpture, jewelry, wood carving, ceramics and more. A new addition to the 2010 Festival was a participatory Public Art Project, developed by sculptor and former Hidden River artist Brock Rumohr. For this piece, Rumohr built steel-framed structures that were completed by Festival visitors during the event. Throughout the weekend, visitors were invited to weave thin lathe wood strips and plant materials into the structures, which were then assembled into a single monumental piece at the close of the Festival. The Center’s first foray into temporary, or “ephemeral” installation art, the natural decomposition of its organic materials over time allowed the Center’s visual art students to observe and document the process of decomposition throughout the subsequent months.

ploch Art galleryThe 2010-2011 season was the first to feature artists selected by the Center’s new Curatorial Committee, established under the Visual Arts Program. This ground breaking lineup included artists who enjoy regional and international reputations, highlighted in January by a site-specific installation created exclusively for the Ploch Art Gallery. Once again sponsored by Lyle Husar Designs Jewelry, the exhibits included a diverse array of work by Wisconsin fine artists. For the third year in a row, a juried group exhibition closed the season, showcasing the wide ranging subjects and styles of Milwaukee area artists.

professional ArtistsDedicated to providing access to the finest performing and visual artists from throughout both the local community and the country, the Center afforded audiences with exciting opportunities to engage directly with these professionals during the 2010-2011 season. Artist Dialogues—conversations between Executive Director Jonathan Winkle and the guest artist—took place with a variety of the season’s artists:

• Mequon sculptor Susan Falkman, creator of the breathtaking 40-foot fireplace in the Center’s Grand Hall, shared her vision as well as the practical side of working with stone.

• UWM Peck School of the Arts faculty member Elizabeth Johnson (along with UWM dance students) discussed the choreography of Mark Morris, whose company was featured on the Center’s Performing Arts Series.

• The young professionals of the Florentine Opera’s Studio Artists program joined the company’s General Director William Florescu to share insights regarding the opera apprenticeship experience.

• Additional dialogues were held immediately after the season’s performances by Dee Dee Bridgewater, Karrin Allyson and Maceo Parker.

Studio ProgramsThe Wilson Center is proud to nurture lifelong learning through innovative and exciting programs and classes for all interests, ages, and abilities. In the 2010-2011 season, more than 600 children and adults visited the Center’s state-of-the-art classroom and studio spaces to participate in classes, lessons and workshops. The Center’s tradition of collaboration continued as arts education partners Danceworks, Inc., First Stage Children’s Theater, and Wisconsin Conservatory of Music brought high-quality instruction to the Center’s roster of studio program offerings. Visual Arts classes, developed and administered by Wilson Center staff, provided exploration and enrichment in various fine art media.

In fall, the Center offered a fiction workshop with best-selling author Jaquelyn Mitchard, whose best-selling novel The Deep End of the Ocean was later adapted for film. During this intensive, intimate three-day workshop, participants studied one-on-one with Mitchard to refine structure, description and dialogue elements of fiction writing.

Students visited the Center in summer 2011 for camp experiences including First Stage Summer Theater Academy, the Red Oak Young Writer’s Summer Creative Writing Camp, and the Wilson Center’s own summer arts camp, The Art of Nature.

fInAnCIAl nArrATIVEAfter several consecutive seasons of net operating results at or slightly above breakeven, the Center experienced two seasons of significant operating deficits directly as a result of the economic recession. In 2010-11, the operating results were only slightly below breakeven. In addition, the 2010-11 fiscal year included an additional expense allocation that had been treated as a below-the-line capital expense in all prior years. Adjusting for this allocation to compare apples to apples, so to speak, and the Center had its best operating result in its history. Expense controls continue to be a hallmark of management and very importantly, top line revenue improved to historic record levels in corporate sponsorships and annual individual giving in 2010-11.

As indicated in the revenue pie chart, the Center has diversified its’ revenue sources, which has proven to be a source of strength during such times has we recently have experienced. The Center also has been very conscious of cost control and has taken a number of steps to properly manage its resources.

The Center refinanced its mortgage loan during the past year and will see a significant decrease in the amount of interest expense in future years. The current mortgage loan has a balance of $1.0 million compared with an original amount of $9.5 million in 2002.

The Center’s recently established endowment fund continues to grow and is expected to contribute to operating revenue in the future. The fund is managed by a committee separate from the Board of Directors and the management of the Center.
