Dear Friends of Pathways,

Looking back over 2010, we at Pathways are proud that in small ways and big

ways, Pathways nurses, home health aides, therapists, bereavement counselors

brought comfort, hope, and peace to so many. Our lives are made up of many

moments, and perhaps none are as precious as those lived in the presence of

illness and at the end of life. Pathways is honored to be a part of so many of

these moments in our patients’ lives in 2010.

We share with you, in this annual report, the story of one family whose lives we

touched in 2010. Frank Leyva lived an extraordinary life, a life devoted to service

to our nation and protection of our leaders. In his mid-eighties, he reached to

embrace life by marrying again. When he and his bride were confronted with his

diagnosis of incurable cancer, they sought help from Pathways. Frank’s wife,

Jean, found strength and support in Pathways’ staff.

We’re grateful for your sup-

port and encouragement.

Your gifts, and the notes

that accompany them, tell

us that you value Pathways’

place in our communities.

As a locally-grown nonprofit

that serves Santa Clara,

San Mateo, San Francisco,

Alameda, and western

Contra Costa counties,

Pathways is an essential

part of life in the Bay Area.

You make our work possible

– you help make every day

count. Thank you!

“Frank could charm the legs off a fly.” So

says the wife of Frank Leyva, a Pathways

hospice patient for four and a half months.

“He had a wonderful grin,” concurs hospice

nurse Leslie Barnes.

It was perhaps that charm that propelled

Frank from a boyhood in Madrone (now a

part of Morgan Hill) to the Secret Service,

responsible for protecting Presidents Nixon,

Kennedy, and Johnson, as well as Secre-

tary of State Henry Kissinger and others.

Frank had always intended to go into

law enforcement. He was studying at

San Jose State University in their police

program when World War II broke out.

While in Marine boot camp, Frank garnered

the notice of the camp commander when

he systematically read every book in the

camp library.

“Frank was bored in boot camp, and he

loved to read. The camp library mostly had

how-to books and mechanical manuals, but

they were books, so Frank read them,” his

wife Jean Pinard says. “The commander

noticed and offered Frank the chance to go

to Officers Candidate Class.”

During the war, Frank was one of the

Marines assigned as part of the honor guard

for President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s funeral.

After serving in the South Pacific, Frank

returned to San Jose and joined the Sheriff’s

Department. He was soon recruited by the

Secret Service, becoming one of the first

Hispanic Secret Service agents ever.

His knowledge of Spanish came in handy, as

he was asked on occasion to translate when

an official interpreter was not available.

Frank loved to tell the story of translating

for President Johnson on a visit to a ranch

in Texas. Through Leyva, Johnson was

quizzing the foreman of the ranch, who only

spoke Spanish. But when Johnson asked

how many heifers the ranch ran. Leyva

stopped and turned to Johnson, “I’m just

a prune orchard kid from California, sir,” he

said, “I don’t know what a heifer is.”

His most challenging assignment, he

always said, was as Special Agent in

Charge at the U.S. Embassy in Paris during

the Paris Peace Accord talks that ended

the Vietnam War. Frank was in charge of

security for the diplomats at the talks.

With his first wife, Mary Ellen, Frank raised

five children. After Mary Ellen died, Frank

moved back to San Jose. At age 84, he

was introduced by mutual friends to Jean

Pinard. Jean and Frank had grown up not

too far from one another, had both attended

San Jose State at the same time, but had

never met. Jean, a teacher and then princi-

pal for more than 30 years, wasn’t looking

to marry again – not in her 80s. But Frank

was charming and hard to resist.

It was less than a year after their 2009

wedding that Frank’s prostate cancer took

a turn for the worse. “He was always

so optimistic,” Jean says. “He thought we

would have more time together.” By

October 2010, a Kaiser liaison recom-

mended considering hospice care.

Jean thought it was a good idea. “I was

getting in over my head,” she says ruefully.

“Everyone had advice to offer and I wasn’t

sure what was the right thing to do in terms

of his care. When Leslie Barnes, our nurse

came, I felt I was getting expert advice.

There was the strength that comes from

knowledge and security. We were in good

hands. And, honestly, we just fell in love

with everyone from Pathways.”

Jean relied on Leslie for her tactful way of

speaking with Frank. When Frank needed

help with bathing and dressing, but didn’t

want to accept help from a home health

aide, Leslie gently convinced him to change

his mind. “Leslie was a genius at talking to

Frank. She convinced him it was time to stop

driving and convinced him to accept help.”

Soon, home health aide Rhonda Pulsipher

was making visits. Frank bonded with

Rhonda immediately, and she became a

trusted confidant. Social worker Teresa

Hernandez came often as well. Frank so

enjoyed the Pathways staff who stopped by

to visit that he always wanted to cook them

food. “Frank insisted I make quesadillas to

feed them. He loved Mexican food. He was

a lot of fun – he wanted to tell jokes and

share limericks,” says Jean.

When Frank died, Jean found photographs

of Frank with the Presidents and diplomats

he had served, along with commendations

and letters. In the den of the home they

shared, Jean created a wall devoted to

Frank and his achievements. It’s her way of

honoring the man who brought so much joy

to her and served his country so faithfully.

Pathways 2010 DonorsLike the spirit of giving so evident in the

Bay Area, Pathways has roots deep in

our community. Over the years, gener-

ous gifts to Pathways Home Health and

create and sustain a vision of caring and

compassion for those at the end of life.

We thank all of the past year’s donors for

helping empower this vision. A complete

listing of donors appears in the printed
