AUBURN IN OPENERSAuburn has a 90-25-2 record in season-

opening games. The Tigers have won fourstraight season openers after dropping three oftheir previous four. Auburn beat Louisiana Techlast year, 37-13, Louisiana-Monroe in 2008, 34-0,Kansas State in 2007, 23-13, and WashingtonState, 40-14, in 2006. The Tigers’ last loss in a sea-son opener was a 23-14 decision against GeorgiaTech in 2005. Auburn has won 19 of its last 24season openers.

NON-CONFERENCE OPENERSSince 1977, Auburn is 23-5 in season openers

against non-conference opponents. In 115 years offootball at Auburn, the Tigers are 53-15 whenopening the season versus non-conference foes.

OPENING DAY SUPERLATIVESAuburn has had numerous outstanding indi-

vidual and team performances in season-openinggames. Bo Jackson’s 290 rushing yards versus SWLouisiana in 1985 and Alexander Wright’s 263receiving yards in 1989 against Pacific are the bestseason-opening performances by an SEC player.

CHIZIK ERA ENTERS SECOND YEARHead coach Gene Chizik begins his second

year at the helm of the Auburn program, afterrecording the second-most wins by a first-yearcoach in Auburn history last season. He alsobecame the first Auburn head coach to take histeam to a bowl game in his initial season, leadingthe Tigers to a 38-35 overtime victory overNorthwestern in the Outback Bowl. Chizik alsobecame just the third coach in Auburn history towin his first five games as head coach, andbecame just the third SEC coach since the leagueexpanded in 1992 to start 5-0.

STAFF REMAINS INTACTAuburn achieved a rare feat by keeping its

entire coaching staff from last season, makingAuburn the only school in the SEC to return itshead coach and every full-time assistant coach.The last time Auburn returned its entire coach-ing staff was when the 2006 staff returned intactin 2007.

OFFENSE BY THE NUMBERSAuburn’s offense lost quarterback Chris

Todd, who accounted for more than 93 percentof Auburn’s passing yards last season, and run-ning back Ben Tate, who rushed for 1,362 yards.Still, the Tigers have more than 91 percent oftheir receiving yards and 85 percent of theircatches, plus more than half of their rushingyards returning this year. RUNNING BACK U.Despite losing Ben Tate, a second-round

NFL draft pick of the Houston Texans, Auburnstill has a deep stable of talented backs in the fold.Senior Mario Fannin leads the group, enteringthe year with 971 career rushing yards. Fannin,who has also spent time as a wide receiver andkick returner, was the team’s second-leadingreceiver last year with 42 catches for 413 yardsand three scores. He enters his senior season with2,722 career all-purpose yards, and is just 400yards away from cracking Auburn’s all-time top10 list in that category.

Sophomore Onterio McCalebb also returnsafter gaining 565 yards on the ground as a truefreshman. McCalebb became the first Auburnfreshman ever to rush for 100+ yards in his firsttwo collegiate games. Also added to the mix isfreshman Michael Dyer, who was the No. 1-ranked high school running back in the countrylast year according to ESPN.com/Scouts, Inc.

WIDEOUTS RETURN FROM A TO ZJunior Biletnikoff Award candidate Darvin

Adams headlines a talented group of widereceivers that return in 2010. Adams set anAuburn single-season record with 60 receptionsin 2009, and his 997 receiving yards and 10touchdown catches were third best in school his-tory. He was named MVP of the Outback Bowlafter setting an Auburn bowl record with 12grabs for 142 yards.

Senior Terrell Zachery was Auburn’s No. 2receiver last year, finishing with 26 receptions for477 yards and five touchdowns. Zachery was abig play specialist, averaging 49.2 yards per TDcatch while also rushing nine times for 214 yards(23.8 yards per carry) and a score.

SEC SUCCESSSince the 2004 season, Auburn has won

31 of its 48 Southeastern Conference gamesand 32 of its 49 games against SEC schools,including the 2004 SEC Championship gamevictory over Tennessee. Auburn has one of the most experienced ifnot one of the best offensive lines in the country,with four starters returning who have combinedto make 109 career starts. Senior All-Americancandidate and Outland Trophy watch list candi-date Lee Ziemba has started all 38 games at tack-le since arriving as a true freshman, while centerRyan Pugh, a Rimington Trophy candidate, hasmade 32 starts since his true freshman season.Guards Mike Berry (21 starts) and Byron Isom(18 starts) round out the experienced group.

THIRD STRAIGHT NEW OPENING DAY QBJunior college transfer Cameron Newton

will be Auburn’s third opening-day starter in asmany seasons, but he is no stranger to the SEC.Newton played at Florida as a true freshman in2007, rushing 16 times for 103 yards and threetouchdowns, and also played in the 2008 openerbefore redshirting. He spent the 2009 season atBlinn (Texas) College, helping the team to the2009 NJCAA national championship by passingfor 2,833 yards and 22 scores while also rushingfor 655 yards and 16 TDs, making him the No. 1-ranked junior college prospect in the countryaccording to Rivals.com.

VETERAN LINEBACKERS LEAD DAuburn returns two of the more experi-

enced linebackers in the SEC in seniors JoshBynes and Craig Stevens. Stevens has started 26consecutive games dating back to his freshmanseason, while Bynes has started 21 straight.Stevens is second among all Auburn returnerswith 190 career tackles, while Bynes has 167,including a team-high 104 last season.

Both players were named to the watch list forthe Butkus Award, which goes to the nation’s toplinebacker, while Bynes was also named to thewatch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award andStevens to the watch list for the Bronko NagurskiTrophy. Bynes was a preseason first-team All-SECselection by the league’s media and coaches, whileStevens was a second-team pick by the coaches.

D-LINE HAS EXPERIENCEAuburn’s defensive line lost first-team All-

SEC defensive end Antonio Coleman to theBuffalo Bills, but the Tigers have plenty of experi-ence returning. Four of the Tigers’ starters or topsubs will be seniors in 2009. Antoine Carter andMichael Goggans are projected starters at defen-sive end, while Mike Blanc and Zach Clayton aretwo of the top three interior linemen.

PREVIOUSLY INJURED DBs RETURNAuburn’s secondary will be boosted by the

return of three former starters who are returningfrom injuries, including two that missed theentire 2009 season.

Senior Aairon Savage actually missed boththe 2008 (knee) and 2009 (Achilles) seasons in

their entirety before being granted a sixth year ofeligibility by the NCAA in February. He started11 games as a freshman in 2006 and was namedto a pair of Freshman All-America teams, butmissed six games during his sophomore seasondue to shoulder and ankle injuries and has notplayed since the 2007 Iron Bowl.

Junior safety Mike McNeil started all 12games as a sophomore in 2008, finishing secondon the team with 65 tackles, but missed all of2009 after breaking his leg in the spring.

Senior safety Zach Etheridge is Auburn’smost experience player in the secondary, havingstarted 33 consecutive games before suffering aseason-ending neck injury last Halloweenagainst Ole Miss. He returns as Auburn’s topcareer tackler on the squad with 192 stops in theprevious three seasons.

BYRUM RECORD WATCHSenior Lou Groza Award candidate Wes

Byrum enters his final season at Auburn on paceto become Auburn’s all-time leading scorer.Byrum, who set a school single-season record forpoints by a kicker last season with 99, needs 73points to pass John Vaughn (2003-06) for the topspot on Auburn’s career points scored list.Byrum is currently fifth on the list with 240points, just 26 behind Damon Duval (1999-02)for fourth.

Byrum was a semifinalist for the Lou GrozaAward last season after making 15-of-16 fieldgoal attempts and all 54 PATs. He set school sin-gle season records for field goal percentage andPATs made and attempted.

WASHINGTON PACES KICK RETURNERSSenior Demond Washington set an Auburn

single-season record for kickoff return averagelast season, leading the SEC with an averagereturn of 31.1 yards. He also set Auburn single-game records with 202 kickoff return yards and229 total return yards in a game at Georgia lastseason. Washington, who also played cornerbackbefore starting the final four games of the seasonat safety, was named to the watch list for the PaulHornung Award, which goes to the nation’s mostversatile player.

THE SENIOR CLASSHead coach Gene Chizik has a senior class

that includes 24 players at Auburn in 2010, whichis the largest in Auburn history and almost dou-ble the size of last year’s senior class of 13. Theprevious largest senior class was 23 in 1988.

Of Auburn’s 24 seniors, 12 have seen time inat least 30 games during their careers. MarioFannin leads the group with 41 games played,including three in 2006 before redshirting andall 38 games over the past three seasons, whileMichael Goggans, Craig Stevens and Lee Ziembahave also played in all 38 games since 2007. HIGHLY TOUTED RECRUITING CLASSWhile Auburn’s seniors will be leaned up

heavily this season, another strong recruitingclass will play a big role in the Tigers’ success.Auburn’s 2010 recruiting class was ranked No. 4in the nation by both ESPN.com/Scouts, Inc.,and Rivals.com and sixth by Scout.com. Sevenmembers of the recruiting class were part of theESPNU 150.

STARTS STREAKSenior Lee Ziemba enters the 2010 season

with the longest staring streak on the squad, hav-ing started all 38 games over the past three sea-sons. If he starts all 12 regular-season games thisyear, he will break Will Herring’s school recordsof 49 career starts and 49 consecutive starts.

Two other seniors have streaks that dateback to their freshman seasons, as Ryan Pughhas made 28 straight starts and Craig Stevens has26 straight starts under his belt. Senior JoshBynes is next with 21 consecutive starts andsenior Mike Berry has made 18 straight starts,while sophomore Daren Bates and junior NeikoThorpe started all 13 games last season.
