BERKELEY - California breezed past Nevada, 4-1. Junior forward Alex Morgan had three goals for the Bears and redshirt junior forward Lisa Kevorkian had one. Cal out shot UNR, 15-2, and 8-2 in shots on goal.

“I don’t think that we were particularly hard to defend because we played very one-dimen-sionally - north to south,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “In the second half, we spread the field and used the width better, and as a result, we were able to create more opportunities on goal.”

Morgan got the Bears on the board very early in the first half - just 5:23 into the game. Nevada keeper Marie Cove was drawn out of her post in goal to grab a ball but Morgan out powered her to gain possession and an open look on goal. The teams went into the half with Cal holding a 1-0 lead, but that did not last long. Kevorkian scored the ultimate gamewinner in the 59th minute. With freshman forward Samantha Walker coming in with the assist, Kevorkian shot the ball in off a deflected block.

From there, Morgan tacked on two goals - one at 61:15 and her third of the game and season at 71:33. To bring Cal’s advantage to 3-0, Morgan re-ceived a pass from senior midfielder Katie Oakes. Junior defender/forward McKenna McKetty fed the ball to Morgan fro her third ball, again com-ing into the box. Nevada’s Emma Rice scored a goal with just under eight minutes remaining in the game, winning a 1-v-1 battle with freshman keeper Lauren Hein. The Bears earned 10 corner kicks to Nevada’s one. Senior keeper Gina Pel-legrini was credited with the win, with 60 minutes spent between the posts against the Wolf Pack. Morgan led the Bears with four shots on goal.

PORTLAND, Ore. - The No. 16 California women’s soccer team lost a hard-fought noncon-ference game, 4-0, to No. 3 Portland on Friday evening at the Merlo Field at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex. The game was played in front of 5,068 fans, which was the third highest at-tendance in Merlo Field history.

“Portland fully deserved to win tonight,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “They were better in all areas, especially in the first half.”

The Pilots, who lost just two starters from last year’s squad that advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament, controlled the pace of play in the first half. They got on the board just 2:20 into the game with a goal from Danielle Fox-haven. Foxhaven followed that up with a rebound shot in the 20th minute and Portland’s Michelle Olivier added a header to give UP an early 3-0 lead. The Bears finished the final 15 minutes of the half strong but headed into the locker room with a three-goal deficit. The Bears significantly bettered their performance in the second 45 min-utes, forcing the Pilot keeper Hailee DeYoung to make two saves. Cal notched three shots in the second half, compared to two in the first period.

“We improved our play in the second half and could have sneaked a goal out but squandered some good chances,” McGuire said. “This is not an easy place to play, but we will benefit from this in the long run.”

Senior goalie Gina Pellegrini played the full 90 minutes between the posts, making three saves. Junior forward Alex Morgan led the Bears with two shots while senior Katie Oakes, redshirt junior Lisa Kevorkian and freshman Samantha Walker each contributing one.

BERKELEY -The No. 14 California women’s soccer team upended No. 10 Texas A&M, 1-0, on Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. Red-shirt junior forward Lisa Kevorkian notched the game-winning goal at 69:22. Cal out shot A&M, 11-4, to bring the Bears’ season total to, 31-20, thus far in 2009.

“We had a certain energy and excitement on the team,” McGuire said. “The team also played together. When we play together, we can be very dangerous.”

The Bears had a good look on goal just five minutes into the game when a shot from sopho-more midfielder Katrin Omarsdottir, who just returned to Berkeley this week after competing with the Icelandic national team at the European Championship, had a shot that went just high after Kevorkian crossed it to Omarsdottir in the box off a pass from junior forward Alex Morgan.

The Bears came out firing in the second half, taking eight shots in the second 45 compared to three in the first half. The Bears turned the tide in the 70th minute, when Kevorkian fired off a beautiful shot from 18 yards out off the feed from Jesolva. The goal was Kevorkian’s second in three games in 2009 and her second game-winning score.

The Bears are now 3-2-0 against the Aggies after losing a heartbreaking game, 1-0, last year at A&M. This is the first upset as well as the first win for the Bears against a ranked opponent since defeating No. 16 Santa Clara in the opening round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament.

“It really sent a message to the rest of the nation about what Cal is all about,” Kevorkian said. “We didn’t play well against Portland last weekend so to beat such a competitor like A&M, especially after last year, the result exemplifies what we’re here to do this season.”

BERKELEY - The No. 14 California women’s soccer team outlasted No. 25 Texas, 4-2, on Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium on the closing day of the 15th Annual Cal Invitational. The Golden Bears took a 1-0 lead into the half-time and went on 3-0 scoring run in less than six minutes to extend their advantage to 4-0.

“We had two great wins for the program this weekend,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “I think, after the Portland loss, the players were probably questioning if they had what it took so we needed this.”

Senior defender Brianna Bak scored the first goal in the 22nd minute immediately following a corner kick. The goal was Bak’s first of the year.

“Lauren Battung did a really good job sealing off the near-post player,” Bak said. “I was there and tapped it in.”

The teams went into the halftime break with the Bears leading, 1-0. Less than five minutes into the second half, sophomore defender/forward Miranda White extended Cal’s lead with a goal off a suburb cross from redshirt junior forward Lisa Kevorkian. Just minutes later, at 53:02 Alex Morgan scored with a shot to the top-left corner off a pass from sophomore midfielder Katrin Omarsdottir. Just under three minutes following, senior midfielder Katie Oakes fired in a goal with Morgan coming in with the assist. Texas’ Courtney Goodson scored two goals - one at 68:01 and the other at 76:02 - get the Longhorns on the board. The final 13 minutes of play went without another goal, giving Cal the final 4-2 victory.

Morgan led the Bears with three shots and two assists. Cal had four players named to the all-tournament team: Brianna Bak, Lisa Kevorkian, Alex Morgan and Katie Oakes.

MORAGA, Calif. - The No. 9 California wom-en’s soccer team kicked off its 4-2 victory over SMU on Sunday afternoon with the quickest goal thus far in the 2009 campaign, scored 2:22 into the match. The Golden Bears tacked on three more goals to overpower the Mustangs in Moraga as part of the Saint Mary’s Fall Soccer Classic.

“We played very well in a very physical game,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “The players controlled the tempo of the game, managed their emotions well and deserved the win.”

Barely into the third minute, sophomore Katrin Omarsdottir dribbled in from 35 yards out to go 1-v-1 with the SMU keeper, knocking in a goal with a shot to the right post. The goal, scored at 2:22, was the fastest goal scored by the Bears this season, with the next earliest goal coming at 5:23 against Nevada. Omarsdottir, who is a starter on the Icelandic national team, played in her fourth game this season after competing at the European Championships.

Omarsdottir helped with the second goal, which occurred six minutes later, dishing an as-sist to junior forward Alex Morgan. Omarsdottir had a through pass to Morgan, who beat the SMU keeper to the open net for her fifth goal of the year. Shortly thereafter, Morgan earned her sixth goal, this one unassisted, at 15:51, with a shot from 18 yards out to the far post. Roughly a minute following Morgan’s second score, Cal’s third goal, SMU put one past the Bears.

Neither team scored until 80:46, when redshirt junior forward Lisa Kevorkian distanced the Bears by three, 4-1, with a goal off a shot from eight yards out off the rebound. Just over five minutes later, SMU player Kenzie Scovill one-timed the ball from eight yards out off a corner kick to give the Mustangs their final goal. Cal’s early lead proved to be clutch, and the Bears came away with the 4-2 nonconference victory.

BERKELEY - The No. 9 California women’s soccer team out shot visiting Portland State, 27-1, en route to a 1-0 nonconference victory on Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium as part of the Saint Mary’s Fall Soccer Classic. Sophomore midfielder and Icelandic national team starter Katrin Omarsdottir had the Golden Bears’ lone goal.

“We were very successful in creating a lot of goal-scoring opportunities,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “However, our execution today was lethargic. We put ourselves in a position where we thought we were going to win.”

One of the Bears’ first best looks came at 21:23 when sophomore forward Camellia Senemar crossed the ball into redshirt junior forward Lisa Kevorkian, who took a shot that was saved when Portland State keeper Cris Lewis knocked it off the right post. Just before the close of the first half, Cal had another near goal when junior forward Alex Morgan took a shot on an empty cage but her shot was deflected off a Viking defender’s back. The teams went into the 15-minute break knotted at 0-0.

The Bears put one through with 29:35 remain-ing in regulation. Junior defender/midfielder Megan Jesolva took a shot that was saved by Lewis. Omarsdottir then rebounded the save as it came off Lewis’ extended arms and shot it in for the game-winning goal. Portland State almost tied the game in the final minute when they drew Cal keeper Rosie Aguilera out on a cross but the Viking offense could not finish the play, and the Bears pocketed the 1-0 win.

Aguilera made one save in 90 minutes of play for the Bears. Lewis had a total of 13 saves with the Bears taking 14 shots on goal and 27 shots overall. Morgan paced the Bears with seven shots, five of which were on goal. The Bears earned eight corner kicks to Portland State’s zero. It was Portland State head coach Laura Schott’s return to Edwards Stadium as a coach for the first time since her playing days as a Bear. Schott, who is in her second year as head coach of the Vikings, is still the all-time goal-scoring leader with 56 career goals.

MORAGA, Calif. - The No. 7 California women’s soccer team rebuffed East Bay rival Saint Mary’s, 4-1, on Friday afternoon at Saint Mary’s Stadium. Sophomore midfielder Katrin Omarsdottir had a team-high two goals while junior forward Alex Morgan scored the gamewin-ner – her third of the year.

In the 16th minute, the Bears earned a penalty shot, which senior co-captain Katie Oakes con-verted for her second goal of the season to give Cal a early 1-0 lead. Saint Mary’s got its first shot of the game in the 31st minute off a header from Jessica Menzhuber that went wide. Menzhuber followed up her miss with a goal at 32:47 with a strike off a free kick from 35 yards out to the far post, and the teams went into halftime tied, 1-1.

The Bears controlled the first part of the second half, scoring a goal in the 57th minute when Morgan took a shot from eight yards out to the near post off the assist by Miranda White. Junior Emily Shibata kicked off a successful 67th minute with a shot that was saved by Larson. Sophomore midfielder Katrin Omarsdottir col-lected the rebound from 10 yards out, and shot it past the keeper for her third goal of the year and Cal’s third score of the game. Omarsdottir came through again with a goal at 78:44, with Morgan coming in with the assist. Omarsdottir took a shot from 12 yards out to far post off a free kick.

The Bears have out shot their opponents in six out of this seasons’ seven games for a com-bined total of 93-38. The 4-1 win over the Gaels was the fourth time in 2009 that the Bears have scored four goals. The Bears are now 6-0 when scoring first. Morgan paces the Bears with seven goals. BERKELEY - The No. 7 California women’s soccer team lost a hard-fought overtime match to Cal Poly, 1-0. The Golden Bears outshot the Mustangs, 25-8, marking the seventh time this season that Cal has outshot its opponent.

One of Cal’s closest shots came with 5:22 to play in the regulation, when junior forward Alex Morgan took a shot that barred out off the top. The Mustangs fired off two shots and the Bears had one in the final minute of the second half, but neither could poke one through and forced overtime. Cal Poly’s Whitney Sisler netted the golden goal at 92:18 with a shot from the right off a cross from Bria Park.

The loss is the first overtime game that Cal has seen this season. The Bears still hold the all-time advantage, 3-2-0, against the Mustangs. The previous most recent meeting between Cal and Cal Poly was also an overtime game - a 2-1 Cal victory on Oct. 3, 1997. Morgan paced the Bears with four shots on goal (eight in total) while Munoz had two (four all together). Senior goalie Rosie Aguilera made two stops in the box for the Bears. With its 25 shots, Cal forced the Mustang keeper to make a total of nine saves. The Bears earned six corner kicks to the Mustangs’ one. The Bears limited Cal Poly to just three shots on goal

Bak rejected Cal Poly’s second attempt of the second half with 16:20 remaining in regulation, when Bak blocked a Mustang attempt to cross the ball into the box. In the 77th minute, Brunache stopped Cal Poly’s Morgan Miller from movement, controlling the ball at the goal line to give the Bears possession. Senior goalie Rosie Aguilera made a key defensive play with 6:56 remaining when she grabbed the ball with six Mustangs hot in pursuit. Morgan’s shot that hit the cross bar in the 85th minute was Cal’s last second to last shot of regulation before sophomore defender/forward Miranda White took a last-ditch shot with two seconds on the clock. The goal in the 93rd minute was the first action of overtime, and Cal Poly took home the 1-0 win.

BERKELEY - The No. 10 California women’s soccer team fell, 1-0, to visiting Sacramento State. For the seventh consecutive time, the Golden Bears outshot their opponent - 19-9 against the Hornets. Junior forward Alex Morgan paced the Bears with four shots while redshirt junior forward Lisa Kevorkian had three. Sac State struck gold in the middle of the 18th minute. Kelsey O’Donnell fired off a shot off the dish from Leah Larot that was just beyond Pellegrini’s reach on the left side for the only goal of the game. The goal was O’Donnell’s second of the year.

Things appeared promising with 18:50 to play in the first half, when Morgan took a corner kick and then came around to shoot the ball, but hit the crossbar. Senior midfielder Katie Oakes powered off a suburb kick in the 39th minute, but Abercrombie came out to deflect the shot. Bak made a key defensive play in the final three minutes, when she disrupted a transpiring play.

Junior midfielder Emily Shibata rebounded the ball and fired off a shot, forcing a CSUS save. Morgan took off again on a fast break with just under 12 remaining in regulation. Despite being heavily covered by four defenders on her solo attack, Morgan managed to launch a shot, but Abercrombie grabbed it.

In the waning minutes of the nonconference match-up, Pellegrini made two important stops, both of which came on shots from Larot and one of which was a spectacular diving save. Sophomore defender/forward Miranda White took a shot that went wide with 10 seconds to play and Oakes took a corner kick with just four seconds on the game clock, but could not put one through.

Sophomore Camellia Senemar earned her first start of 2009 after sitting out the first three games due to an ACL tear that occurred over the summer, while freshman forward/midfielder Lauren Battung subbed in for her first action since the 4-2 victory over Texas (Sept. 6). This is only the second time this season that the Bears have outshot their opponent but dropped the final decision.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -The Bears scored the first goal of the game for either team with 43:03 to play in regulation, when Alex Morgan fired one to the back left bottom corner with freshman Lauren Battung coming in with the assist. Santa Clara got on the board in the 72nd minute with a goal from Maxine Goynes, who was assisted by Jordan Angeli. Angeli headed the ball towards goal and Goynes shot it in.

Cal took two shots in 20 minutes of overtime and SCU had four, but neither could connect. This is Cal’s first draw of the year. Rosie Aguilera made a key save with 5:15 to go in overtime, giving Santa Clara a corner kick but Katie Oakes cleared an attempt.

Cal earned a penalty kick in the 101st minute of play, which Alex Morgan took but the Santa Clara keeper Henninger made a diving save to her left and tipped the ball up and over the crossbar.

Volunteer assistant coach Kelly Lindsey man-aged the team today as head coach Neil McGuire was attending to personal matters. Morgan’s goal was the first Cal score in 240:31 minutes of play with its prior most recent goal occurring in the 79th minute of the 4-1 victory over Saint Mary’s on Sept. 18. With eight goals under her belt in 10 games this season, Morgan ties her freshman-year record of eight scores. She is just shy of her personal best of nine goals in a season, a feat she achieved last year.

EUGENE, Ore. - The No. 19 California women’s soccer team kicked off Pac-10 season with a 2-1 victory over No. 25 Oregon in front of 699 fans. The Golden Bears found the back of net early - the earliest they have this season - with a goal by junior forward Alex Morgan just 1:28 minutes into the match. Morgan earned her team-leading ninth goal of the year by beating the keeper from 20 yards out on a free kick.

“It was a big relief for our team,” Morgan said. “But at the same time, since we scored early, we had to hold the lead for the rest of the game, which is harder than it is to be tied.”

Cal, which is now 7-0-1 when scoring first coming into the match, held the 1-0 advantage for the next 46 minutes of play. The second half began similarly to the first, but with the Ducks scoring the early goal - 2:46 into the second 45 minutes. Teresa Bowns received a pass from Scout Libke and scored with a left-footed boot.

It took the Bears all of 21 seconds to regroup and respond with a score of their own. At 48:07, Redshirt junior forward Lisa Kevorkian rebounded the ball off a keeper deflection from a touch by Morgan and powered in the game-winning goal.

“My heart didn’t swell as much this time,” Kevorkian noted. “Since Alex had just [gotten tangled up] by the goalie, there was a moment of uncertainty. But once it was confirmed, it felt like every goal does - euphoric.”

Morgan tied her career high of nine goals in a season, a feat which she achieved last season. Averaging 0.818 goals per game, Morgan is on track to score roughly 16 by the close of the regular season. Morgan’s goal in the second minute was the first goal scored in any game this season. The previous earliest goal occurred at 2:22 against SMU on Sept. 13 by Katrin Omarsdottir. This was Cal’s first win in three games.

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The No. 19 California women’s soccer team won its second Pac-10 Conference game of the year with a 2-0 victory over Oregon State on Sunday afternoon at OSU’s Paul Lorenz Field. The Golden Bears are now 8-3-1 overall and 2-0-0 in conference play while the Beavers are now 8-4-1 and 0-2-0 in Pac-10.

Sophomore Katrin Omarsdottir scored the gamewinner in the 61st minute with a shot to the lower right from 10 yards out. Camellia Senemar had the assist.

“Camy did a great job of finding the cross,” Omarsdottir said. “Lisa went for the header - drawing their defender to her - so I was wide open. I got the ball to my feet and finished with one touch. We’ve been practicing finishing with one touch, but in practice, this would have counted as three.”

Junior forward Alex Morgan added on her 10th goal of the season with 11:07 to play in the game off a dish from redshirt junior Lisa Kevorkian. Morgan went one-v-one with the keeper to beat her for the score.

“When Lisa passed me the ball, I took a touch, passed the keeper and got tripped but stayed up and thankfully hit it towards the middle of the goal,” Morgan said. “It was a great pass on Lisa’s part, I just had to put it away.” Morgan’s goal was her 10th of the year, which is a new career single-season scoring record.

The Bears tallied three shots on goal with Mi-randa White adding one into. Cal was outshot by the Beavers, 10-8. Redshirt senior keeper Rosie Aguilera played in goal for the Bears and had to make sure one shot in 90 minutes of play. Cal extends its all-time advantage to 16-2-1 over the Bears, and it has now won the past five meetings.

BERKELEY - The No. 17 California women’s soccer team lost a tense Pac-10 Conference game, 1-0, to visiting No. 3 UCLA on Friday af-ternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears had multiple solid looks on goal, but could not convert against the Bruins. UCLA’s goal came from Sydney Leroux in the 77th minute off an assist from Lauren Cheney. The 544 fans in attendance were a season high for the Bears.

“I think it was a great game today between two really good teams,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “It was always going to come down to opportunities and which team was go-ing to put it away. UCLA took its chance, and we missed ours.”

Cal’s first highlight came when redshirt junior forward Lisa Kevorkian stole away on a fast break. She stopped the ball just in front of the end line with a Bruin heavily guarding her, but Kevorkian’s attempt at a cross was denied. Junior forward Alex Morgan took the Bears’ first shot on goal with an attempted header after the ball was booted to her in the box from the right side. Despite being surrounded by five defenders, Morgan’s chances looked bright in 17th minute, when she took a shot off a pass from Kevorkian, but the shot hit the left post.

The teams went into the 15-minute halftime scoreless with UCLA narrowly outshooting Cal, 5-4. With 32:33 remaining in regulation, Morgan, on a fast break, went around the diving UCLA keeper Chante Sandiford, but Morgan’s shot hit the right outside net. UCLA broke the game with open in the 77th minute, when Cheney shot a long pass to Leroux, who fired it off from inside the box for her 12th goal of the season.

“I was very proud of the players and the way they battled,” McGuire said. “It was a great match.”

BERKELEY - The No. 17 California women’s soccer team scored two goals in the second half to tie No. 9 USC, 2-2, at the end of regulation, but could not score in overtime and USC won the 3-2 overtime decision over Cal. Sophomore defender/forward Miranda White scored first for the Bears and junior forward Alex Morgan netted the second. A 2009 season-high 753 fans came out to Sunday’s Pac-10 match.

“I think we had chance after chance,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “We knew that we were always going to be susceptible to the counter attack off them with all the pressure, and they got the goal.”

Just under 19 minutes into the match, USC scored its first goal from Ashley Freyer when Marihelem Tomer crossed it to Freyer from the end line. In the 31st minute, Alyssa Davila took a shot on goal and Cal keeper Rosie Aguilera got hand but it tipped in for the Trojans’ second score.

The Bears came out firing in the second half - taking 16 shots in the second compared to seven in the first half. After having a near miss on a shot from White that hit the crossbar, Cal found the back of the net with its ninth shot of the half. White struck a pass from Morgan at the tail end of the 74th minute to bring the Bears within one, 2-1.

Morgan tied things up, 2-2, with a goal at 77:24 with White returning the favor with the assist. Morgan, who was attacking left to right, shot the ball around her defender to find the upper left corner. After 2:43 minutes had expired in the first overtime period, USC earned a corner kick, which Carly Butcher crossed into Davila, who headed the ball in for her second score of the game to send the Trojans home victorious, 3-2.

BERKELEY - The California women’s soccer team grabbed an important 2-0 victory over visiting Arizona on Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. Freshman midfielder Amanda Groves netted the gamewinner in the third minute for her first goal of her Golden Bear career. Redshirt junior Lisa Kevorkian added an insurance score at 53:03. The Bears outshot the Wildcats, 16-6.

The Bears took control of the game with Groves’ score just 2:10 into the match. Kevorkian passed to Groves, who took a touch and shot it to the back of the net. This game was the first start, shot and goal of Groves’ Cal career.

“I was so excited,” Groves noted. “I’ve never really played the four position before, but the ball went in. but the first time I was there, I was able to make a difference for the team. It brought the team and our spirits up.”

Kevorkian and Morgan teamed up to distance the Bears, 2-0, with just under 37 minutes remain-ing in regulation. Escaping defenders, Morgan dribbled the ball past a diving Wharf in the box, and passed to Kevorkian, who was on the near side just above the end line. Kevorkian shot the ball in for her sixth goal of the season.

“I was originally making a run for a through ball, as well,” Kevorkian said. “But they played Alex, and Alex took this really long touch wide from the goalkeeper. But I got the pass and connected.”

The second half was offensively heated for the Bears, who took seven shots, forcing Wharf to make five saves in the final 45 minutes of play. All in all, Cal outshot Arizona, 16-6, and had six corners to the Wildcats’ one.

Senior keeper Gina Pellegrini played the full 90 minutes in goal, grabbing three saves en route to her second shutout of the season to improve to 6-6-0. The Groves’ goal at 2:10 was the second fastest goal scored by Cal this year. The quickest goal was scored at 1:28 against Oregon (Oct. 9, 2009) by Alex Morgan.

BERKELEY - The California women’s soccer team netted a 3-2 Pac-10 Conference victory in overtime against Arizona State on Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. Redshirt junior Lisa Kevorkian scored the game-winning goal in the 98th minute to push the Bears past the Sun Devils.

After taking five shots through the first 97 minutes of play, Kevorkian put one through at 97:36 for her team-leading fourth gamewinner of the 2009 season. Katie Suits was credited with the assist.

“I’ve never been on the bottom of a dog pile before - it was a great feeling,” Kevorkian said of her team’s celebration following her goal. “When Suits crossed the ball, I knew I had to get a piece of it so I jumped as high as I could and hoped for the best. With golden goals, it’s do or die. I just put all my weight behind it.”

In the seventh minute, Courtney Tinnin drew Cal keeper Gina Pellegrini out, dribbled past her and touched it in for a goal. Barely two minutes later, junior forward Alex Morgan powered off on a fast break. Despite being trailed by three defenders, Morgan past them to tie the game for the first time, 1-1, with 37:12 remaining in the half. Sophomore midfielder Katrin Omarsdottir had the assist.

Morgan played a key role in Cal’s second score, earning a penalty kick after going down in the box at 15:31. Taking the kick was senior Katie Oakes, who was playing in her final home game as a Golden Bear at Edwards Stadium, and she shot it to the left side of the box as the ASU keeper dove to the right. With her Sun Devils trailing, 2-1, Alexandra Elston made things interesting in the 54th minute, when she did a half-bicycle kick off a header from Bianca Doller to even the score at 2-2 and eventually force overtime.

STANFORD, Calif. - The California women’s soccer team fell to the No. 1 team in the country, 4-1, against top-ranked Stanford on Sunday af-ternoon at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium. Alex Morgan had Cal’s lone goal while the Cardinal’s Kelley O’Hara netted a hat trick to power the Cardinal past the Golden Bears in the regular-season finale for both squads. The annual Big Game between the rival schools was played in a sell-out crowd of 2,000 with fans filling the stadium and lining the field.

“Our players worked extremely hard,” Cal head coach Neil McGuire said. “Stanford is a very, very talented team, and they took advantage of many great opportunities. We failed to capitalize on our chances early.”

After Pellegrini had made three impressive saves, the Stanford offense poked one through at 13:40. The Cardinal took a corner kick, which was headed away by the Cal defense, but Stanford’s Kelley O’Hara rebounded the ball, and shot it to the back right from 10 yards out for her 21st goal of the season.

Stanford scored its second goal at 31:17, again thanks to O’Hara. Rachel Quon played a ball to her from the right and O’Hara headed it in to the back post. O’Hara earned herself a hat trick with Stanford’s third goal of the game in the 53rd minute off an assist from Alicia Jenkins.

At 58:10, heavily pressured by five defenders and the keeper in front of the box, Morgan was awarded a penalty kick. Morgan took her kick to the right side, but the diving Maker made a black. Morgan collected the rebound and easily knocked it in for Cal’s first score of the game. The goal by Morgan was her 13th goal of the season, bringing her three-year career total to 30 goals, which is fourth all-time in program history. She also remains in fifth place with 74 career points. Stanford responded roughly four minutes later when Lindsey Taylor shot the ball into the upper left 90 from 30 yards out.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - California saw its 2009 campaign and NCAA Tournament hopes come to an end with a 3-0 loss at the hands of No. 1-seed and host Florida State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday afternoon at the Seminole Soccer Complex. The Seminoles (18-4-1) scored two first-half goals to build an insur-mountable lead over the Golden Bears (11-9-1).

Lisa Kevorkian, who had five shots and a goal against Auburn, had the first attempt 1:20 into the game with a shot that went wide. Alex Morgan forced the first save for either side in the ninth minute with a shot that FSU keeper Erin McNulty grabbed. Emily Shibata had a wide shot at 11:48 and then another shot that McNulty saved at 13:50

The Seminoles’ first shot on goal came a few seconds into the 16th minute, but Cal goalie Gina Pellegrini was there with the save. Florida State scored the first goal of the game at 33:03 with a goal from Jessica Price with Amanda DaCosta on the assist. A shot deflected off Pellegrini, Price collected and slipped the ball inside the left post from 10 yards out to give FSU a 1-0 lead.

Following Florida State’s first goal, neither squad took a shot until 40:18, when Tiffany Mc-Carty fired one off to find the back of the net with DaCosta again assisting. McCarty took off on a long run and shot a deflected pass to the upper left corner to distance FSU, 2-0 with less than five minutes to play in the first half.

With the Seminoles leading, 2-0, it took 11 minutes of play at the beginning of the second half for either team to fire off a shot when Pellegrini made a save on a shot from FSU’s Tori Huster. The next Florida State shot resulted in a goal with a header from Toni Pressley in the 74th minute. Becky Edwards and Lauren Switzer teamed to redirect a corner kick and Pressley headed it in to give the Seminoles a 3-0 lead.
