Leadership Message

Providence’s Mission in Alaska reaches back into the history of our state to a time

when access to health care was challenging, if not impossible, for many Alaskans. In

1902, responding to a call for help from Nome, four Sisters of Providence traveled by

horseback, train and boat to bring health care to the residents of this booming Gold

Rush town. The Sisters’ mission was to care for anyone in need, regardless of their

ability to pay.

Today, more than 100 years later, the Mission of the Sisters continues through

Providence’s commitment to Alaskans. Providence now directly serves five

communities and provides health care available nowhere else in the state. We

reinvest in facilities, services and technologies – sometimes at a loss – to ensure that

Alaskans receive the best care possible right here at home. In fact, after we pay our

bills, every dollar is reinvested in the communities we serve. And we continue to care

for all Alaskans, no matter their financial circumstances.

As a not-for-profit, our commitment to Alaska is most evident through our

community benefit programs, which include free and discounted medical care for

those unable to afford it. In 2010, Providence was able to provide more than $50.4

million toward community benefit programs to support our Mission of serving the

poor and vulnerable.

This commitment and this Mission mean Alaskans can be confident that Providence’s

dedication to providing high-quality, compassionate care spans not just decades, but

centuries. We are blessed to be such a part of Alaska’s history and Alaska’s future.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve.

Our Calling and Our Promise

2010 Providence Health & Services Alaska Community Benefit Report Compassion | Commitment | Community

Our Mission to reveal God’s love for all is both our calling and our promise to deliver quality, affordable care to everyone in

our communities, especially to those who are the most vulnerable.

Everything we do is guided by our Mission and our Core Values: from the free and discounted care we offer to our patients,

to the community benefit we provide to reach unmet needs, and to our stewardship efforts to make health care more

affordable and provide the best outcomes for patients.

Serving our communitiesThe Providence Mission reaches out beyond the walls of care settings to touch lives in the places where relief, comfort and care are needed. Our community benefit spending is about treating not just the patient, but the total health of the community. Through programs and donations, Providence’s community benefit helps connect families with preventive care to keep them healthy, puts food on dinner tables, provides shelter to those who have no place to turn and provides compassionate support in difficult times. We collaborate with other Catholic ministries, government agencies, churches, schools, charitable foundations, universities, research facilities and other partners to providing a lasting community benefit. In 2010, Providence Alaska provided $50.4 million in community benefit. Through these programs and donations, we strengthen the underlying health of our communities and open doors for those who are poor and vulnerable.

Reaching out to the most vulnerableAs a not-for-profit Catholic health care ministry, we embrace our responsibility to provide for the needs of communities we serve – especially for those who are poor and vulnerable. Providing care to people who could otherwise not afford it is one of the fundamental ways we live the Providence Mission. In 2010, Providence Alaska offered $25.8 million in charity care so the uninsured and underinsured could access health care.

Providence Health & Services Alaska continues a tradition of caring that the Sisters of Providence began more than 100 years ago.
