Putting 2010 Together
Start with the 2010 Bid Item List
Step 1 – Bid Item ListOpen up the 2010 Bid Item List and find your itemFor example, if you need Traffic Control System, then it is item 120100, paid for by the lump sum, and set forth by Section 12-5
Step 1 – Bid Item ListQ.What if I’m converting my Project BEES from 2006 to
2010?A. Verify that item numbers and item descriptions stayed the same. For example, let’s look at Sand Cover. In 2006, the item number is 365001 Sand Cover
In 2010, it is 370001 Sand Cover (Seal)
Revise your project BEES to match the items on the 2010 Bid Item List
Double Click to open Project BEES
Q.What if I can’t find my item?R.Use the Find function to search for the item code
number.S.Use the Find function to search for the item description.
Try single word searches if the full description didn’t find a match.
Step 1 – Bid Item List
Find the SP TEMPLATE at this website in the “read me first” folder http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/esc/oe/specifications/SSPs/2010-SSPs/
Step 2 – Assembling the SSPs
Open up the SSP Index and look for the SSPs you will need for your project.
For example,STDPLN for your standard plans1-1.01 for bid items that correspond to different
section numbersand many more . . .
Double Click to open 2010 SSP Index
Insert and edit the SSPs that you will need for your project into the SP_Template file.
Edit STDPLN for the applicable standard plansEdit 1-1.01 for the applicable items in the estimate. If you
have non-standard item codes, they need to be added at the end of the table.

Next, look through the SSP Index for SSPs that you will need for your items.
The Bid Item List will give you a start as to what specs may be needed for the item
For example, the item Traffic Control System is set forth by section 12-5, 12-6
However, just because the Bid Item List says you need 12-5 for your traffic control system, it doesn’t mean you won’t need other specs as well
Assembling the special provisions
2006 Index vs 2010 Index – Because some of the 2006 SSPs have been incorporated to the 2010 Standard Specs, there will be fewer specs in the 2010 than in the 2006.

Tips for Understanding the 2010 Standards
Read applicable sections of the Std Specs
Consider what other sections may cover a topic and read that section
Tips for Understanding the 2010 Standards
Keep the Std Specs close by to read what is in the Standard and what is being modified by the SSP.
Keep in mind that SSPs are shorter now and that information has been moved from the SSPs to the Standard Specs and from one section to another section.
For example, this paragraph from SSP 05-060 in the 2006 SSPs
is now in 37-2.03D of the Standard Specifications
Where did it go? Use the find function to search the
Standard Specs to find the information
Think about what other sections the information could be in. What am I really looking for and what does it affect?
What does my Book look like?
