Greg Smith earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder, then his master’s degree and PhD in European and Russian History at Stanford University. After teaching Western Civilization at Stanford, he made the move to academic administration by becoming Associate Director of Undergraduate Admissions at Stanford, followed by positions as Director of Admissions and Vice President of Enrollment at Notre Dame de Namur University and Menlo College. He has been Associate Vice President for Planning and Enrollment Management at East Bay since 2007. He is most proud of his work to expand outreach and enrollment at his last two institutions and here at CSUEB, as well as working on ways to improve the delivery of student services at all stages of the enrollment process, from applying for admissions through to graduation.

He serves on many boards and committees for such professional organizations as the College Board and the National and Western Associations for College Admission Counseling; his personal academic research interests are in the comparative history of secondary education in the United States, Russia, and Central Europe.

paT r i c k D e V i n eDistinguished alumnus of the year

Patrick Devine is currently the Senior Director of Global Incentive Compensa-tion at Oracle Corporation. He emigrated from Ireland at the age of 18, and after attending Chabot College part time, Patrick began his studies at Cal State East Bay. He earned a BS in Business Administration in 1987 and an MBA in 1991. For the past eight years, Patrick has taught a Compensation Management Course at CSUEB through the continuing education program.

At Oracle, one of the most successful software companies in the world, he is responsible for the design and development of all Global Incentive Compensa-tion programs and all of the compensation activities associated with all mergers and acquisitions. Previously, Patrick worked for Applied Materials and Seagate Technology. He has worked extensively in China, Korea, Taiwan, and Europe leading various human resources, finance, and compensation initiatives.

He also serves as Strategic Advisor to the Bishop of the Diocese of Oakland. As a Finance Council member he was instrumental in getting the first Moody’s rating on a diocese in the United States and subsequently floating a $150 million bond to build the new cathedral in downtown Oakland.

Patrick says his proudest accomplishments are becoming an American citizen and graduating from CSUEB. He and his wife of 28 years, Kathy, have three daughters, Bridget, Meagan, and Katie, all of whom are attending California State University colleges (San Luis Obispo, Sonoma, and East Bay respectively).

r O B e r T l i T T O nOutstanding young alumnus of the year

Robert Litton studied composition and percussion performance at Cal State East Bay, receiving his undergraduate degree in 2001 and his master’s in 2004. He went on to graduate first in his class from the prestigious program for scoring motion pictures and television at the University of Southern California.

He has performed with the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Marin Symphony, the Berkeley Symphony, Composers Inc., multiple musical theatre productions, and was a marimba soloist with the Kensington and Fremont Symphony Orchestras.

His compositions have been performed by members of the San Francisco Symphony, San Francisco Opera, San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Los Angeles Opera, Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and the New York Philharmonic. In 2001 he was honored with a featured performance in New York’s Carnegie Hall. Robert, commissioned by CSUEB, also composed “Inaugural Fanfare” in honor of the inauguration of Mo Qayoumi as President of the University on June 1, 2007.

Now a film composer, Robert has scored award-winning films for up-and-coming directors, including Love in the Summertime by Paul Wie, Gerald’s Last Day by Justin and Shel Rasch, and Negotiations by Ethan Cushing, which was selected to be part of the 2008 Cannes Film Festival.
