The Lower Lonsdale Business Association welcomes you to our historic waterfront neighbourhood. We are all blessed to live in one of the most desirable cities in the world and those of us who live, work and play in Lower Lonsdale are especially fortunate.

What makes Lower Lonsdale so special is that with the evolution of our community has come a real sense of com-mon good and cooperation between people and business.

Today we are seeing a growth in community spirit and businesses reaching out to contribute to each other and to the community at large. The growth and in uence of the Lower Lonsdale Business Association is symptomatic of that cooperation and good spirit.

We have been able to enhance the cooperation of people and interests in part by liaising with industry and govern-ment and organizing community festivals. LLBA is proud to present three major festivals: The Party-at-the-Pier / Symphony-at-the-Pier; The Fall Festival; The Celebration of Lights and Carol Ships Festival. Each festival is the product of an engaged community and we appreciate the support of the people, industry, business and government.

All of us in the Lower Lonsdale Business Association are indebted to our community for having been given the opportunity to contribute to the welfare and success of our growing community. Thank you.

Eugene Berti, President, LLBA.

Proceeds from eachof the three

LLBA festivals are donated to

The meaning behind our motif: In 1996 the Squamish Nation presented Ratcliff & Company with a spectacu-lar wood carving created by internationally renowned artist Xwa-lack-tun (Rick Harry). His three meter-wide sculpture graces our reception area. Respect for all people, regardless of race or religion is a central theme for this work of art which forms the basis for our fi rm’s motif, shown at top in its colours. We are honoured that Xwa-lack-tun supports our use of his sculpture as our motif.

WelcomeAs Mayor of the City of North Vancouver, it is my pleasure to invite you to experience our diverse Lower Lonsdale community. With so much to see and do, and the continued enhancement of the City’s waterfront, Lower Lonsdale is quickly becoming an even more sought after area to live and must-see destination for visitors. As an official Community Contributor for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, the City welcomes

athletes and international visitors to explore our vibrant community.

Located on the City’s waterfront across from downtown Vancouver, Lower Lonsdale offers a wide variety of commercial and professional services, hotels, restaurants, shopping, art galleries, a performing arts theatre, recreation centre and parks. The area hosts annual community events including Party at the Pier and the Lower Lonsdale Fall Festival, and features popular attractions such as the Lonsdale Quay Public Market, Waterfront Park, Burrard Dry Dock Pier and the new Shipbuilders Square. The continued enhancement of the City’s waterfront, including the North Shore Spirit Trail and proposed National Maritime Centre will contribute to Lower Lonsdale’s reputation as a lively, walkable neighbourhood for all ages. I hope that the time you spend in Lower Lonsdale gives you the chance to explore the many attractions, take in the breathtaking scenery and experience the warm hospitality of the Lower Lonsdale community.

Standing tall Kruzenshtern sails to the Pier

The Russian tall ship Kruzenshtern has left its home port of Kaliningrad and is scheduled to arrive at Lower Lonsdale’s Burrard Dry Dock Pier in time for the 2010 Olympic Games.

The Kruzenshtern measures 114.6 metres long and 51.3 metres tall. She is a four-masted barque and one of the last of her kind. The tall ship was built in 1927 as PADUA in Bremerhave, Germany, and was given to the USSR in 1946 as war reparation after World War II. She was renamed Kruzenshtern after the early 19th century Baltic German explorer in Russian service, Adam Johann Krusenstern.

Since 1990 the vessel has been used as a sail training vessel by the Baltic Academy in Russia. Today the Kruzenshtern is the world’s second largest sailing ship (second only to another Russian ship, Sedov) and, without a doubt, the most famous ship in the contemporary Russian sailing fl eet.

In Vancouver for the 2010 games, Kruzenshtern will act as a hospitality centre for Russian delegations and will be promoting the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

Kruzenshtern will be at Burrard Dry Dock Pier and open for public tours two or three days a week throughout the 2010 Olympic dates.

The City of North Vancouver’s once industrial shoreline is turning into a destination waterfront as the North Shore Spirit Trail builds links between key communities offering sparkling views along a “linear park” design that has scooped national design awards.

In Lower Lonsdale a key part of the city’s 6.5-kilometre portion of the Spirit Trail, a multiphase project which will eventually stretch from Deep Cove to Horseshoe Bay, has already been completed.

A landmark collaboration between the City of North Vancouver and the Squamish Nation has resulted in a beautiful 300-metre stretch of trail on the Squamish Nation Mosquito Creek Marina, adorned with Squamish Nation art and signature CNV landscaping touches as well as attractive sitting areas which encourage walkers to take a break and take in the views of theVancouver skyline and boats bobbing in the Burrard Inlet.

Eventually, the CNV’s portion of the Spirit Trail will have two key industri-al-area bypasses, with a variety of connector choices from Lower Lonsdale to Moodyville Park, and an overpass of the CN rail tracks at the foot of MacKay Street, over to Harbourside.

The logo for the Spirit Trail is a gender neutral fi gure named Shewalh Stelmexw (Sha-woth Stol-molth) — which means ‘people’s path’ in Squamish.

Squamish Nation representative Sheryl Fisher saysvisitors are wowed by the gateway to the walk, a towering and intricate carving by artist Wade Baker commissioned by the City of North Vancouver, called “Ancient Wisdom.”

Baker said the shared trail has kicked off an effective working partnership between the Squamish Nation and City of North Vancouver.

“Now many of our departments work closely,” Baker said. “The path is amazing and already we see many people enjoying it.”

“Somet hing’s Happening Here”

Presentation House is Lower Lonsdale’s multi-functional art centre, theatre, gallery museum, and archives. The gallery houses one of the largest pho-tographic and artistic media collections in the west.

Presentation House Gallery has a mandate to exhibit and dissemi-nate photography and media art, emphasiz-ing contemporary Canadian work within a context of historical and international art. In addition to the ex-hibition program, we organize national and international tours of exhibitions, produce publications, and offer public events and art education programs. We endeavour to offer the community diverse experiences which will enrich viewers with new considerations about the world in which they live.

Presentation House 333 Chesterfi eld(at 3rd St.)Info: 604.990.3473.

Presentation House Gallery is pleased to be a part of this year-long public art project with Vancouver artist and musician Jeremy Shaw.

Something’s Happening Here is a series of posters mounted as part of the 2009 Cultural Olympiad that celebrates and memori-alizes the legacy of Vancouver’s last major civic event, Expo ’86. Images include current and archival photographs of buildings and sites from the iconic World’s Fair, as well as news articles, promotional materials, and souvenir ephemera. The images are used to create twenty-six unique posters that will be distributed —approximately one every second week—across Vancouver beginning in March 2009 and continuing over one year through to the completion of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

Something’s Happening Here joins an ongoing dialogue on how global events like Expo and the Olympics impact on civic space through an architectural legacy of buildings and monuments, and signifi cantly, how such events live on through a collec-tive civic memory. In redeploying images that invoke the city’s recent past, Something’s Happening Here affects a recuperative snapshot of Vancouver on the cusp of an historic new moment, while memorializing an era of a city that sometimes appears unrecognizable a mere twenty-three years after the fact.

Something’s Happening Here builds both materially and con-ceptually on Shaw’s artistic practice of the past eight years. His works incorporate film, video, photography, and various studio-based mediums in a quasi-documentary style, and address social peripheries and cultural deviance. Shaw has an ongoing interest in the shifting uses of civic and public landscapes by mainstream and subcultural groups.

Shaw’s works have been previously seen at Presentation House Gallery in the group exhibition Moodyville (2008) and the solo show DMT (2006). Shaw is currently based in Berlin, Germany

Lower Lonsdale, the bustling lower half of North Vancouver’s main drag has an equally vibrant past. Situated just above the shoreline of the Burrard Inlet, Lower Lonsdale was teeming with activity at the turn of the last century with the introduction of a cross-inlet ferry service and a booming shipyard industry. By 1900, the North Vancouver—the fi rst in a fi ve-ferry fl eet, began running back and forth from Vancouver to the foot of Lonsdale on a regular basis. A couple years later, Alfred St. George Hamersley, one-time solicitor for the City of North Vancouver, purchased and subdivided District Lot 274 which resulted in the rapid development of the Lower Lonsdale area. Soon after the acquisition, the housing market opened up in the area and by late 1903 land was being sold and more lots were being cleared. The popu-lation infl ux in the area led to the beginnings of a small, commercial sector in Lower Lonsdale. In 1905 council called for a proposal for a street railway system to en-hance the area’s transportation system. The fi rst trial run along the Lonsdale route took place on August 29, 1906. That same year, Lower Lonsdale saw the construction of a shipyard by Vancouver’s Alfred Wallace which would set the stage for a bustling complex of harbour-based operations. Captain Charles H. Cates had already estab-lished a boat repair and towing company which would eventually boast the largest fl eets of deep-sea tugs on the West Coast. Economic prosperity and rapid growth in Lower Lonsdale led to the es-tablishment in 1907 of the separate City of North Vancouver, with a popula-tion of around 1,500. The shipyards were booming at the height of the Second World War. However, with most of the men fi ghting overseas, a huge labour shortage ensued. The only solution was to hire women. North Vancouver Museum archives reveals there were almost 1,500 women working in shipyards around the Burrard Inlet during that time. Post-war Burrard Dry Dock modernized and acquired other shipyards, becoming the largest on the West Coast. It went through a number of name changes, pioneered the construction of self-unloading log barges, and refi tted cruise ships and the BC Ferries fl eet. The 1950s and 1960s were a time of suburban growth for the North Shore, helped along by the construction of the new Second Narrows Bridge. The bridge connected people to other areas of the North Shore leaving Lower Lonsdale a little neglected. Ferry traffi c started decreasing when the Second Narrows was built in 1925; but the service remained in continual operation

until the construction of the Lions Gate Bridge in 1937, when the ferries became uneconomical. The last ferry sailed on August 30, 1958. The two automobile bridges and a housing boom in North Vancouver’s more mountainous subdivisions contributed to the decline of Lower Lons-dale. Author Warren Sommer, commissioned by the City of North Vancouver to write The Ambitious City – A History of the City of North Vancouver, talks about Lower Lonsdale hitting rock bottom in the late 1970s before rebound-ing in the early 1980s. “It was a depressed area,” says Sommer. “A lot of properties were aban-doned and derelict. It was hardly the jewel that it once was.” Many residents agreed that Lower Lonsdale was in need of a facelift but there were differing opinions on a revitalization plan. Some called for the restoration of the area’s historic buildings while others wanted new construc-tion. However it was the advent of the SeaBus in 1977 that reclaimed Lower Lonsdale as the gateway to the City of North Vancouver. Also, a new commu-nity plan called for the densifi cation of the area but restricted building height to preserve views. In 1980, the process of redevelopment in the Lower Lonsdale area fi nally began. “Waterfront Park” and a massive residential and commercial project to be known as Lonsdale Quay were constructed. By 1984 a new public market was in place at the heart of the Lonsdale Quay development with the intent that it would create a festival-like atmosphere in the area. And by the mid-80s, Lonsdale Quay became a transportation hub with a large bus depot connecting passengers to the SeaBus terminal. As Lower Lonsdale trans-formed, businesses in the area began to pick up and the area reestablished itself as a signifi cant shopping destination. Lower Lonsdale continues to undergo vibrant redevelopment. The old shipyards buildings are mostly gone, replaced by a new collection of build-ings, including the Pinnacle Hotel, which opened in January 2010, and multiple residential buildings. Public access to the waterfront has grown to include The Pier (Burrard Dry Dock Pier), a 700-foot stroll extending into Burrard Inlet, and the Spirit Trail which is being completed in sections, eventually to become a walking path from Deep Cove to Horseshoe Bay.

The Waterfront Project aims to connect the local community by creating a sense of place and pride that also celebrates the City’s past, present and future.

More than a century ago, the waterfront portion of the City of North Vancouver, at the foot of Lonsdale Avenue, was a vital, bustling transportation centre for shipbuilding and marine-related industries. What was once a logging and shipping town of 2,000 residents has evolved into a diverse and vibrant community of more than 48,000 residents.

The City is committed to preserving and revitalizing its waterfront heritage and rich maritime history.

The Burrard shipyard site, which anchors the Waterfront, has already been recognized at local and national levels as a heritage landmark.

With the restoration of the Burrard Dry Dock Pier and St. Roch dock, the City’s Waterfront continues to be rediscovered by residents. It’s a breathtaking venue offering spectacular 360-degree views of the North Shore and Vancouver skylines.

The Pier facility draws tourists, visitors and locals as well as private and commercial vessels, all of which bring economic opportunities to the neighbourhood.

Come down to the waterfront and discover the Pier for yourself!
