USTA/Middle Illinois Tennis Participants and Supporters,

It is a bittersweet moment for me as I sit down to write my one and only presidential message to you. As of June 1, 2010,I will be leaving the USTA/Middle Illinois District and my job at Western Illinois University to accept a position at TexasLutheran University in my home state of Texas.

But before that happens, I do have a few thoughts I’d like to share regarding the direction and future of USTA/MiddleIllinois.

Since taking over the district presidency in November, my time has mainly been spent working on the organization of theDistrict. For years now, our volunteers have done an outstanding job of creating new programs and growing the game oftennis within our district’s borders, but we have neglected some of the internal structures that govern our organization.

The first internal structure that needed to be reworked was our method of governance. For many years, we have reliedmainly on the Board of Directors and the Executive Director to govern the district. In many cases, 4-5 people reallyshouldered the majority of the load. So, the first thing I wanted to establish was “governance by committee” – spreadingthe governing out by establishing and filling committees with large numbers of volunteers (usually chaired by a Boardmember). Many of you reading this Yearbook are currently serving on one of those committees.

The second internal structure that needs to be looked at was the organization’s bylaws. For many years, the Board ofDirectors has talked about this, but we just haven’t done much with it. I am proud to say that our Grievances/Bylawscommittee, chaired by Dr. Jim Davis, has begun work on rewriting and updating our very outdated bylaws.

The third internal process that it is my hope to make substantial changes to is our method(s) of communication with ourpublics. USTA/Middle Illinois does a great job of creating programs and growing the game. But if nobody in the generalpublic KNOWS what we are doing, then the organization is failing. To that, we have created a new Communicationscommittee, chaired by Paul Lenzen, that is tasked with creating communications strategies to get our name out into ourcommunities more effectively. We are going to soon have a new web presence (the USTA is changing its current webtemplate in favor of a more interactive one); we are on Facebook; we will soon be Twittering; and we will be sending out press/media releases to local newspapers and radio and television stations regarding our programs, our tournaments, our high school and university programs, and our professional tournaments. It’s time to start promoting this great organization of ours!

Although I do have additional ideas and believe that there are areas that still need work, these three internal areas are the ones with which we will start. I feel very good that we will get these accomplished and I feel very good about thedirection of this District. But for it to work, we’ll need everyone’s help. Many of you have worked for many years in tennis and maybe you feel that you have done “your time” already with USTA/Middle Illinois. PLEASE reconsider! We need your experience and your expertise in order to make this District the best organization it can possibly be. I encourage each of you to volunteer, if you aren’t already, with either the District or the Section TODAY.

Thanks to Vicki, Jim, Norma, Bret, and everyone else who has made my time with USTA/Middle Illinois truly wonderful. I will be rooting for you all from Texas!

Take care,

Michael HuntUSTA/Middle Illinois District President

MITA-9

Why is QUICKSTART TENNIS referred to as Americaʼs Plan for 10 and under tennis? The USTA, along with industry partners including USPTA, TIA and PTR, have taken steps to bring tennis to chil-dren aged 10 & under in a more fun and dynamic way. This collaborative effort has resulted in the development ofa new format that will get more kids playing the game, developing better skills and staying longer.

The key goals are as follows:• Increase the number of beginning players ages 5 to 10

• Increase the retention of players aged 5 to 10 and beyond

• Improve the technical, tactical and physical development ofplayers ages 5 to 10

• Develop future champions

• Improve the wellness of youth playing tennis

Is QUICKSTART TENNIS a new USTA program? No, QUICKSTART TENNIS is a format, not a program. By format, we mean specifications for play based on age, courts dimensions, net height, ball, racquet size and scoring. This format will be used for casual play, in lessons, team competition and tournaments.

Who decided on the specifications for the QUICKSTART TENNIS format? The specifications for the format were agreed upon by the representatives from the tennis industry - USTA, TIA,USPTA, and PTR,. The specs were agreed upon based on lessons learned from pilot programs that were conduct-ed by tennis professionals that operate some of the largest 10 and under tennis programs in the country.

What programs do you anticipate using the QUICKSTART TENNIS format?Locally branded programs across the country, in every state, will use the QUICKSTART TENNIS format. Also, nationally branded programs such as the USPTAʼs Little Tennis program and PTRʼs Kids Tennis will use theQUICKSTART TENNIS format. In the Midwest, Youth Team Tennis is really taking off.

What can pros, coaches and facilities gain by using the QUICKSTART TENNIS format? The response from professionals, club owners, parents and kids has been overwhelmingly positive. Young playersare able to better develop proper tactics, footwork and technique at a much younger age, because the ball is land-ing in the kidsʼ strike zones, rather than going over their heads. Also, itʼs easy to get more kids per court. And morekids, having more fun means better court utilization and revenue for facilities.

How is QUICKSTART TENNIS different than what people have been doing for years – using smaller ballsand smaller racquets? There are two key differences. Coaches and pros have used foam balls and smaller racquets for years. But therewere never standardized specifications for the ball, the racquet, the court, the net and scoring based on age. TheQuickStart Tennis format uses all of these elements together, the same way, and that makes a huge difference. The other key is that there were very few competitions using scaled- down equipment and courts. Therefore, it wasused primarily as a teaching aid and was not considered “real tennis”. Since the QuickStart Tennis format will beused in competition, kids and parents both will consider it “real”

Getting kids at this age to play on teams is critical to retention. In addition to USTA Jr. Team Tennis and manysanctioned tournaments using the format in 2008, we know that many professionals and clubs will be using theQuickStart Tennis format for their local team events and competition as well.

The Middle Illinois Tennis Association lost a long time friend and contributor whenJim Whitman of Normal, Illinois passed away Jan. 8, 2010.

Jim was born Dec. 6, 1944, the only son of Clinton and Mary Pearl PetersonWhitman. Jim started playing tennis on a grass court in the backyard of hisGrandfather Whitman, his first tennis teacher, at the age of 4. He came toBloomington-Normal to attend ISU on a ‘‘talent’’ scholarship for tennis and playedat ISU from 1963 to 1967, where he was MVP sophomore and junior years, teamcaptain junior and senior years, and small college All-American his senior year. He was inducted into ISU’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1981.

After graduation, Jim played for one year on the pro tour, then returned toBloomington-Normal, earning his M.S. in education while teaching industrial arts at Normal Community HighSchool. In 1972, he returned to his alma mater as men’s tennis coach, a position he held until 1985, andcoached the women’s team from 1983 to 1985 as well. That same year, he was hired as pro-manager for thenewly-opened Evergreen Racquet Club, whose indoor courts enabled Jim to develop lessons, leagues and interclub competition on a year-round basis.

He recruited many of his collegiate players to help him teach tennis to junior players in Evergreen’s Jr.Excellence Program and was very proud to have given them a start there, and proud that so many of his formerplayers are teaching pros today.

Jim was one of the first tennis teachers to be certified by the USPTA and had a PRO-1 rating since 1970. Jimwas a past recipient of the MITA Paul Nolan Award which recognizes individuals for their contributions to theMITA and grassroots tennis. He became a USTA official in 2009.

At the time of his death, Jim was beginning his 38th year at the Evergreen Racquet Club, teaching in the Jr. Excellence Program, and teaching both group and private lessons, often to the children and even the grand-children of his ‘‘original’’ students.

He also spent the last two summers introducing tennis to an entirely new generation of kids on outdoor courtsfor the Bloomington park district.

He touched thousands of lives, and was known for his broad smile. Tennis was his life; he had limitless lovefor the game as a player, coach, teacher and spectator.

He knew he was a lucky man to have realized his dream of spending his life doing something that he loved.

He is survived by his fiancee, Virginia I. Grady; and daughters, Jana A. Whitman, Littleton, Colo., and JenniferA. Whitman, Arlington Heights.
