NSU SEASON OUTLOOK

The 2010 edition of Norfolk State volleyball team willhave a new look with the addition of seven new playersand a new head coach in interimhead-man Brandon Duvall. Afterserving as an assistant at NSU thelast two seasons, Duvall returnsseven athletes from the 2009season. Included among them is juniorsetter Nicole Kessner, the Spartans’2009 All-MEAC second-team pick. The 2009 squad finished 9-22overall and 3-5 in MEAC play andadvanced to the opening round ofthe MEAC Tournament. Duvall inherits a young team, withjust one senior in Tracey Copley andtwo juniors – Kessner and Winston-Salem State transfer Jasmine Frazier(Fredericksburg, Va./Winston-SalemState). Kessner and redshirtsophomore Paige Gary-Canty are theonly two players who were with theteam just two seasons ago. “Even though we only have onesenior on the team, we have a goodcore group of returners,” said Duvall. “All went through alot last year learning how to lead a team and be a morepositive influence on the floor.” With such a young team and with several youngstersexpected to contribute early, Duvall knows that theopportunity is there to build something at NSU and givethe program a new identity. “We’re trying to bring in kids who’ve great experienceand played at a decently high level,” said Duvall. “They’recoming into a program where they have a chance tobuild it from the ground up, especially combined with theupperclassmen and their collegiate experience. “They all know how to win. That’s the big thing. Wehave a new face to the program, and now we can buildour own tradition.” The Spartans lost five players from the 2009 season, including seniors Solange Honore, Angie Clewis andAurelia Isham along with sophomores Breanna Allumsand Elayne Greer. Those five players combined to make76 match starts and were responsible for 44 percent ofNSU’s total kills, 47 percent of its digs and 52 percent ofthe team’s blocks. Joining Duvall on the bench for the 2010 season willbe assistant coach Dave Albaugh, a veteran HamptonRoads high school and junior Olympic coach. Prior to hisarrival at NSU, Albaugh spent more than a decadecoaching the boys’ and girls’ volleyball teams at GreatBridge High School in Chesapeake. A team leader on and off the court, Kessner will bethe main setter for the Spartans in 2010. En route tobeing named NSU’s Most Valuable Player in 2009,

Kessner led the team and ranked seventh in the MEACwith 767 assists. She also recorded 193 digs,130 kills, 22 aces, 20 total blocks and ateam-high .276 hitting percentage in 105sets. Kessner ranks fourth all-time on theNSU assists list after just two seasons with1,285 and is within striking distance of theall-time record of 1,971 set by Honore.

Sophomore Kristen Burt will see timeas the setter along with Kessner, asDuvall looks to run a 6-2 with bothsetters in the back row. In 2009, Burthad 74 assists in reserve action forKessner and also added 123 digs (1.74per set, ranking fifth on the team), 17kills and 10 aces in 83 sets.

“Both are well-improved from lastyear and from whatwe’ve run inpractice, both willcome in and set areally good ball,”said Duvall.Returning to theteam from lastseason at theoutside hitterposition aresophomores EllicaMorris and ChynnaBlaker and Gary-Canty. Morrisfinished fourth on

the team with 1.58 kills per setin 71 sets as a freshman with 36 digs and 10 blocks. “One of the heaviest arms on the team,” explainedDuvall about Morris. “Needs a lot more game experience, but skill wise having time off during the summer to gethealthy has really helped her.” Blaker tallied slightly less than one kill per set in 61sets last season to go along with 33 digs and five blocks. “Definitely a vocal leader,” he said. “She came in andsaid she wanted to help guide the freshmen through thetransition into college, thinking she’d take a back seat, but she’s done some very good things as practices haveprogressed hitting the ball. She’s a very positive influenceon the floor.” Gary-Canty suffered the second season-ending injuryof her college career three matches into the 2009 seasonwhen she went down with concussion symptoms, butshe is expected to be at full strength to start 2010. “Paige is going to be great. She put in a lot of workover the summer,” Duval said. “She has a lot to prove. She’s back on track to where we would want her to be.” The Spartans lost Isham to graduation and Allums leftthe team prior to conference play, and NSU will also have

to make up for the offensive loss of Clewis and Greer.Clewis was third on the team in kills per set in 2009, whileGreer was the top offensive threat, averaging 1.98 kills per set. Newcomers Arielle Knafel (Greenwood, Ind./CenterGrove HS), Tiana Patterson (Dumfries, Va./Potomac HS)and Mykal Vailu’u (Tustin, Calif./Arnold Beckman HS) willadd depth to the outside hitter position. Knafel was an AAU All-American as a senior and ledCenter Grove HS to the final four at the statechampionship that year as well on her way to beingnamed the Johnson County Athlete of the Year. “Even at 5-9, she is probably ourhighest jumper and most explosivehitter right now,” said Duvall. “She’svery quick on the floor and will beone of our best ball-control playerson the floor, front row and back row.” Patterson was a first-team all-region honoree her senior year aswell as team MVP her junior andsenior seasons and has the physicaltools to take a step up at NSU. “She hasn’t had the same kind ofexperience the other players havehad, but physically she can play,”said Duvall. “Physically, she’s exactlywhat we want her to be. She justneeds more game experience.” Vailu’u was a standout on boththe volleyball and track and fieldteams during her high school daysand also hails from a nationally-ranked club team, said Duvall. “Mykal is very, very good withher feet with a very quick arm,” hecontinued. “She puts a lot of heat onthe ball.” Sophomore Charlotte Armstead is the onlySpartan middle blocker back from last season. NSU lostClewis to graduation and Greer left the team at the end ofthe season. Armstead, NSU’s Rookie of the Year, led theteam with 60 total blocks (47 assists, 13 solo) and leadsthe returnees in kills (192), kills per set (1.86) and totalattacks (475), ranking second on the team in 2009 in allthree categories to Greer. “The height that she hits the ball is a very big asset,”said Albaugh. “She has a very long arm and hits the ball ata very high point. Her foot speed is very good, and she isone of our quicker blockers out there.” Backing up Armstead at middle blocker will be Frazierand freshman Kylee Thiim (Honolulu, Hawaii/SacredHearts Academy). Frazier comes north to Norfolk after two years atWinston-Salem State, as she led the team in total blocksboth years, including 73 last season. She also added 91kills and 64 digs in 2009. “We were fortunate to have Jazmine transfer in lastspring,” said Duvall. “It’s hard to consider her new, because she’s been part of our team chemistry since thespring. She feels that she is a returner, even though shehasn’t played one match for us yet. “Charlotte and Jazmine are really bringing it to themiddle blocker position.”

Thiim arrives all the way from Hawaii, where she was a member of the 2006 state championship team.“She has an extremely high volleyball IQ,” Duvallcontinued. “She knows the court very well. She finds openspots. She’ll be more of a control player and a big blockfor us.” Copley and sophomore Maatra Henderson will sharethe libero duties to start the season. Copley is secondamong the returnees with 189 digs, finishing third overallon the team in 2009. She also topped all teammates with31 service aces and also showed some offensive flash,

totaling 99 kills on the year.“Tracey had to hit

outside for us last year, but shewill be assuming a defensiverole for us this year,” Duvall said.Henderson played sparingly, totaling 29 digs in 53 sets, butshould have an expanded rollcome 2010.

“She’s been quite a surprisefor us,” Duvall said. “Ball controlwas an issue last year, but shetold me at the end of the yearshe’d come back and make sureshe will improve and that I’d seeshe put the work in. She’sabsolutely right. Her ball controlis much better than it was last year.”

Freshman Noelle Eagles(Richmond, Ind./New CastleChrysler HS) will vie for playingtime at the libero position. Eagleswas a three-time all-conferencemember in high school and set thesingle season record for digs her senior year.

“She’s from one of the top clubs in the nation, and right now she’s on fire for us,” said Duvall. “She’s been playing tremendous. She’ll end up playing a significant role at that position.” The schedule will be favorable for the Spartans earlyon, as the team will kick things off at home Aug. 27-28when they host the Spartan Classic with Providence,Navy, UNC Greensboro and Kent State. “We’re getting these good mid-major programs in thatwe are really going to have to compete against if we wantto come out with a few wins right off the bat,” said Duvall. NSU will also play in tournaments hosted by Radford,Coastal Carolina, UNC Greensboro and Maryland EasternShore along with another home tournament, the SpartanInvitational, on Sept. 25 against Davidson and Delaware State. “With our schedule this year, we should be competingat a high level with these teams,” Duvall declared. The team kicks off the conference schedule Oct. 4 athome against Florida A&M, as the Spartans play seven ofeight matches at home during the middle of October. Other non-conference home matches include dateswith Savannah State, James Madison, North CarolinaCentral and Hampton. The Spartans play each of theMEAC southern division teams at home and on the road, and play on the road at Savannah State, NCCU and Hampton.

NSU ATHLETIC HIGHLIGHTS

The Norfolk State University intercollegiate athleticsprogram has experienced unprecedented success atthe NCAA Division I level during the past five years(2005-10). This period of progress has beenhighlighted by improvements in virtually every areacritical to transforming the NSU athletics program intoa highly competitive program that will consistentlychallenge for Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC)and NCAA Division I championships. The catalyst for these advancements has been Marty Miller, who was appointed athletics director at NSU in December 2004. Miller believes that themission of the athletics program is an extension of the mission of Norfolk State University. He places an emphasis on areas that impact the welfare ofstudent-athletes. Improving graduation rates, gender equity, and the retention of student-athletesare equally, if not more important, than winningconference and national championships. However, the initiatives designed to enhance thestudent-athlete experience and improve the overalladministrative process have been successful due to theachievements of the teams and individual athletes.Perhaps the biggest achievement came in early 2009,when the athletics department was recertified toreceive NCAA accreditation for the next 10 years. Byachieving certification status, NSU is considered to beoperating its athletics program in substantialconformity with operating principles adopted by theNCAA’s Division I membership. Numerous staff and coaching hires have been made to enhance the department’s efficacy. New personnelhave been hired in the areas of academic support, compliance, business operations and development to meet the growing demand in those departments. A host of new head coaches joined the staff signalingnew beginnings in several sports. They included PeteAdrian (Football), Claudell Clark (Baseball), AnthonyEvans (Men’s Basketball), Heidi Cavallo (Softball), andWilhelmenia Harrison (Bowling). Kenneth Giles (Men’sTrack) and Ronda Berard (Women’s Track) werepromoted from interim to full-time head coaches intheir respective sports. Giles’ cross country and track teams have dominatedthe MEAC. Adrian has orchestrated the steadyprogress of the football team, which came within agame of capturing its first MEAC title in 2007. Evansled the Spartans to the MEAC Tournamentchampionship game in his second year. Clark andCavallo helped guide their teams to runner-up finishesat the MEAC championships in their respective sportsin 2008. Harrison guided the bowling team to its firstMEAC Southern Division regular-season championshipin 2008-09 and the No. 19 national ranking in 2009-10. The accomplishments of NSU student-athletes in theclassroom since 2005 have been equally impressive.

The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC)enters its 41st year of operation heading into the

2010-11 academic school year. The MEAC ismade up of 13 outstanding historically blackinstitutions across the Atlantic coastline:Bethune-Cookman University, Coppin StateUniversity, Delaware State University, FloridaA&M University, Hampton University, Howard

University, University of Maryland EasternShore, Morgan State University, Norfolk State

University, North Carolina A&T State University,North Carolina Central University, Savannah State

University and South Carolina State University.

HISTORY In 1969, a bold ad hoc group of innovators long associated with intercollegiateathletics met in Durham, N.C., to discuss the feasibility of organizing a newconference. Dissected from these discussions, a steering and planning committeewas formed to fully investigate the idea, present a detailed report withrecommendations to interested collegiate institutions, and then construct aworkshop to outline proposals. After adopting a program, seven institutions (Delaware State College, HowardUniversity, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State University, NorthCarolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University and South CarolinaState College) agreed to become the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Its majorobjective was to establish, organize and supervise an intercollegiate athleticprogram among a compact group of educational institutions of high academicstandards and with a sound philosophy of co-curricular activities. The conferenceagreed to seek Division I status for its sports. The conference was confirmed in 1970, kicking off its first season ofcompetition in football in 1971. In 1978, a milestone was reached when the MEAC selected Kenneth A. Free tobe its first full-time commissioner. Free served the conference for 18 years beforestepping down in May of 1996. In July of 1996, Charles S. Harris was namedcommissioner and served in the capacity until April 2002. On September 1, 2002,Dr. Dennis E. Thomas was named the commissioner and has served in the positionfor nine years. The conference’s first expansion occurred in October 1979 when Bethune-Cookman College and Florida A&M University were voted into the MEAC as newmembers. Original members Morgan State, North Carolina Central and MarylandEastern Shore withdrew from the conference at the end of the 1979-80 fiscal year.Maryland Eastern Shore was readmitted in 1981 and Morgan State returned in 1984.Florida A&M opted to resign in 1984 but rejoined the conference in 1986. CoppinState College was granted admittance in 1985, becoming the ninth memberinstitution. The MEAC expanded again in the 1990’s with the inclusion of HamptonUniversity (1995) and Norfolk State University (1997). The conference expanded in2007 adding Winston-Salem State University. On July 1, 2010 the MEAC made its final expansion with theadmittance of North Carolina Central and Savannah State University. On June 8, 1980, the MEAC was classified as a Division I conference by theNational Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Prior to that year the conferenceoperated as a Division II conference. The following month the MEAC received anautomatic qualification to the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship. Currently, the conference has automatic qualifying bids for NCAA postseasonplay in baseball (since 1994), men’s basketball (since 1981), women’s basketball(since 1982), football (since 1996), softball (since 1995), men and women’s tennis(since 1998), and volleyball (since 1994).
