    covered35countiesand6tribes. Thesurveyresults,questions andbackgroundareposted

    athttp://www.oregon.gov/DHS/addiction/student-wellness/index.shtml. Inadditiontotheoverallstatedata,thereareindividualcountyandotherreportsavailable. Aftertheoverallresultsweredisseminated,

    weaskedforspecialcrosstabulationsbetweenyouthgamblingandotherbehaviorsand

    thoseresultsareintheslideswhichfollow. Thesedataarenotroutinelyincludedinthe

    postedreports,sowerelyonyouatthelocalleveltodisseminatethisimportant

    informationonyouthgambling.

    Thisslide,fromthestatewidereport,showsthatover38%ofsixthgradersreportthatthey

    havegambledinthepast30days. Italsoshowsthetypesofgamestheyaremostlikelyto

    play: bettingongamesofpersonalskill(bettingonshootinghoops,forexample),betting

    onsportsteams,playingcards,andbettingondiceorcoinflipsarethemostcommon

    formsofgamblingin6th grade.

    Thisdataisalsofromthestatewidereportandshowsthatover45%of8th graders

    reportedgamblinginthepast30daysasignificantincreaseovertheratereported

    among6th graders. Themostcommontypesofgamblingincluded:gamesofpersonalskill,

    playingcards,bettingonsportsteams,diceandcoinflips.

    Thesedata,alsofromthestatewidereport,showthatslightlyover38%of11th graders

    reportedgamblinginthepast30days. Thetop5preferredgamesremainsrelatively

    similartowhatwasreportedin6th and8th grade,althoughthereissomevariationbetween

    games.

    question). Whiletheissueoflargeexpenditureshasneverbeen thekeyconcernwhenwe

    talkaboutyouthgambling(thefactthattheyredoingitatallandwithoutguidanceisthe

    chiefconcern),itisinterestingtonotethatover5%of8th and11th gradersreported

    spendingover$50ongambling.

    withthem. Theseratesaresignificantlylowerthandiscussions byparentsorteachersof

    therisksofotherbehaviors,suchasalcoholandtobaccouse. Weknowfromothersurveys

    thatmostparents(andprobablymostteachers)donotviewyouth gamblingasarisky

    activityinfact,someofthemseeitasahealthyalternativetootherriskbehaviors,which

    wewillsoonseeviaothergraphsisnotthecase.

    wejustdontseeit,whenproblemgamblingpreventiontalksaddressthisissueeven

    thoughtheydontseeit,itisclearlyhappeningandgenerallywithoutguidance or

    parameterssetbyparents,teachersorothers.

    Whats increasing the most?

    Manyoftheriskbehaviorsofconcernaredecreasingovertime,whileyouthgamblingis

    significantlyincreasing. Moreattentionneedstobepaidtothisimportantandemerging

    riskbehavior,particularlywhenyouviewitintermsofthecorrelationbetweenyouth

    gamblingandtheseother,morewellknown,behaviorsthenextseriesofslideswillshed

    somelightonthis.

    Youth gambling and alcohol use

    Thisisthefirstinaseriesofslideswhichgraphicallyillustrateswhyyouthgamblingneeds

    tobegivenmoreattention,andwhyitshouldbeincludedinpreventioneffortsaimedat

    otherriskbehaviors. Youthwhogamblehavemuchhigherratesofalcoholusethanthose

    whodonotgamble. Thesecorrelationshaveheldconsistentover thepastseveralyearsof

    datacollection,regardlessoftheparticularsurveyused,andarealsoconsistentwithdata

    onthenationallevel.

    Youth gambling and binge drinking

    Again,youthwhogamblehadmuchhigherratesofbingedrinkinginthepast30daysthan

    youthwhodidnotgamble. Weknowthereisnotadirectcauseandeffectrelationship

    here(iegamblingdoesnotcausebingedrinking,norviceversa),butthereisaverystrong

    correlation. Soifwewanttoaddressbingedrinkingandweignoregambling,weare

    missingtheboatonreallyhelpingkids.

    One Component of Problem Behaviors

    Clearly,then,youthgamblingmustbeaddressedinthecontextofhowitexistsinthelives

    ofyouthoneofseveralpossibleriskybehaviorstheymaytry,whichcanleadtoserious

    problems. Thedifferenceisthat,inreallife,youthgamblingistheonethatisroutinelyleft

    offofthisdiagram. Weneedtochangethatforthesakeofour kids,whoarethefirst

    ittoberiskysomeconsideritahealthyalternativetootherthingswhichkidscouldbe

    doing.thedatapaintsamuchdifferentpictureandparentsneedtoknowthatgambling

    correlateswithmanyofthebehaviorstheydontwanttheirkidstoengagein.
