2 Park University women’s volleyball begins its second season under head coach Rick Mischka in August with improve-ment – both on the court and in the win column – on the

minds of the 13 players on the 2010 squad’s roster. The Pirates won seven matches in 2009, competing with a small roster and a new-to-Park coaching staff. The 2010 edition of the Park women’s volleyball program has had a little more time to come together, and according to Mischka, it has already paid dividends in preseason camp. “Before the preseason even started, many of the recruits had been on campus to play and stay with our return-ers,” Mischka said. “Over the summer, our play-ers were able to stay in touch and continued to get to know each other, and they all showed up with one thing on their minds – to work hard and play for each other. That’s what makes every player become better, and thing con-tinue to be very positive as we get started this season.” The Pirates return eight players to the court in 2010, including honorable mention all-conference performer Ga-briela Garcia, who led the team in as-sists per set last season but will move to the right side for the 2010 campaign. Park also brings back a pair of seniors – Crystal Cole and Bethany Buehler – who were Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes in 2010. “We returned a solid core,” Mischka said. “Gabi (Garcia) making the move to the right side will be good for us, and the two seniors have stepped up their roles from a year ago. We’ve also got consistency in Kristen Beck, Rafaella Chaves and Rachel Stagg, who will stay in their positions from last year, along with experience on the back row in Ashley Reinert.” Reinert led the team in defense during 2009, averaging nearly 2.5 digs per set while piling up 192 from the back row last season. The Pirates also return Mariana Vogado, who made great strides last season, posting 149 kills while also collecting 31 service aces. “The biggest factor early on for us has been Mariana,” Mischka said. “She worked exception-ally hard in the off season after showing improve-ment last year, and she’s come to us in 2010 with

a new fire and a new level of athleticism. She’s also showing more confidence and I believe that she will be a major leader for us both

on and off the court. She has the person-ality and leads by example.” That leadership center will be asked to take command of five new-comers, a group that includes five freshmen and four junior college standouts. The Pirates will get help in the middle from Ashley Robinson, who

transferred from Antelope Valley College in California, while Shannon Slatter, also a

product of the Golden State, will come in and compete for setting time in 2010. Allie Nichols, who played at Kansas City Kan-sas Community College, is listed as an outside hitter, while Rochester Community Technical Col-

lege’s Vanessa Lawrenz gives the Pirates an option on the back row, defensively.

“This group really puts us in a good position for both this year and the future,” Mischka said. “We’re building a solid

core, and now we have multiple players who can do the job for us at each position. We have the right group in terms of person-

ality and experience, and there is a sense of direction and pur-pose. We’ll still see struggles, as we’re still rebuilding, but we’re in a better position to deal with the struggles this season.” The team’s lone freshman, Jordyn Anderson, from Rib Lake, Wisc., brings a 6-foot-2 frame with offensive firepower and should compete for time in the middle from the beginning in 2010. “All five newcomers have the potential to see the floor in 2010,” Mischka said. “We are heavy in junior college recruits, and two of them (Slatter and Robinson) have experience at the NCAA level. They’re both already fighting for playing

time, and Vanessa Lawrenz is working hard to lock up the libero position. Allie (Nichols) is dynamic and explosive, and

she’s putting herself in a position to see court time as well. Jor-dyn (Anderson) is an all-state athlete with a huge block and a

powerful arm. She also has the intensity to want to win every point, which is something we need. She has a chance to have a decorated career at Park.” In addition to transition for the 13 roster spots, Mischka will also continue to transition in 2010, marking his second season as a head coach for two programs, also coaching the Park men’s

volleyball squad. “I’ve become very comfortable coaching both pro-grams and I enjoy coaching both teams,” Mischka said.

“They both have different aspects that I really like. The women are very eager to learn and improve and have bought in to the direction I want to take them. As always, the guys are strong and passionate. I am better prepared and organized for this year, which will allow us to focus and continue to improve our work ethic.”

THE SCHEDULE If Park University’s women’s volleyball program took on a new look in 2009, its schedule is following suit in 2010. The Pirates will play a normal slate of home matches, 10, including seven home contests against American Midwest Conference opponents, but it’s a new nonconference look that highlights the 2010 slate, including a season-opening trip to the Grand View University tournament, in Des Moines, Iowa. The Grand View event replaces the C of O Mazzio’s Classic in Point Lookout, Mo., where the Pirates had com-peted for the past three seasons. Park’s season begins Aug. 27 against Missouri Valley College, followed by a second Aug. 27 match against Evangel University. The tournament resumes Aug. 28, pitting Park against tournament host Grand View to begin the day, followed by a match with the College of Saint Mary, a former rival from the Pirates’ days in the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference. The team’s home opener comes Sept. 1 when Avila University and the University of Saint Mary come to Breckon Sports Center for the Park Triangular, followed by a match Sept. 8, at Haskell Indi-an Nations University, beginning a five-match road trip. MidAmerica Nazarene University breaks up the Pirates’ travel schedule Sept. 14, in Parkville, followed by seven-straight on the road, including six in the American Midwest Conference. Park’s first conference game at Breckon Sports Center falls on the first day of October when McKendree University visits at 7 p.m., followed by an after-noon match Oct. 2 against Hannibal-LaGrange College. A staple in the NAIA national tournament is next for the Pirates when Columbia College visits on Oct. 5, and two days later, Park completes its series with Haskell at Breckon Sports Center on Oct. 7. The Pirates will close the regular season with three home match-es that close October and begin November, including Senior Night, scheduled for Nov. 2, against William Woods University. Postseason play begins in the AMC on Nov. 9, with the AMC Quarterfinals getting underway on campus sites at 7 p.m., followed by a Nov. 11 semifinal round, also on campus sites and also at 7 p.m. The AMC will crown its postseason champion Nov. 13 with its tournament championship match, sending the winner to the NAIA Women’s Volleyball National Championship, which begins with an opening round at campus locations on Nov. 20 and concludes Dec. 4 at the Tyson Event Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Park University is a second-year member in the American Midwest Conference, joining in the 2009-10 school year, rejoining the league

after nine years of membership in the MCAC and as an NAIA Independent in basketball. Park previously held membership in the AMC from 1993 to 2000, exiting the league following the spring semester in 2000. “This is a great partnership for Park University and the AMC,” said Park University Director of Ath-letics, Claude English. “In the ever-changing landscape of collegiate athletics, it is important to have strong alliances within a conference for all of our athletic programs. The AMC gives us one unified conference home for our programs, and it also provides a familiarity with our past history in the league.” Park is one of nine AMC member institutions, joining Columbia College, Hannibal-LaGrange Col-lege, Harris-Stowe State University, McKendree University, Missouri Baptist University, Stephens College, William Woods University and Williams Baptist College. “The AMC looks forward to Park University re-joining the conference, and we know that Park will bring a lot to our league in the way of sponsored teams and quality conference competition,” Lowell Pitzer, AMC Commissioner, said. “Park’s location and proximity to the NAIA Na-tional Headquarters will also provide a boost for our conference. This was a unanimous decision by our executive committee, and we are excited for Park to come in next year.” The AMC sponsors championships in 13 dif-ferent sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basket-ball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s track and field, and volleyball. The purpose of the American Midwest Confer-ence is to promote the positive ideals and objectives of athletics, to provide an organization of colleges and universities with similar foundations to engage in athletic contests on an equal basis, to serve as a forum to formulate and solve common problems, to enhance and preserve athletics in their true per-spective and to promote athletics in an academic environment. The American Midwest Conference also com-piles a Presidents Cup, where schools earn points for conference finishes in all sports. McKendree captured the 2009-10 President’s Cup. Park finished fourth in the 2009-10 standings.

RICK MISCHKAHEAD MEN’S & WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL COACH • SECOND SEASON

Rick Mischka became the fifth head coach in the history of the Park men’s volleyball program and the sixth head coach in Pirate women’s volleyball history, on May 13, 2009, and

enters his second season as head men’s and women’s vol-leyball coach at Park University in the 2010-11 season. In his first year as the women’s coach at Park, Mis-chka led the Pirates to a 7-24 record and had two Dak-tronics-NAIA scholar-athletes in Bethany Buehler and Crystal Cole. Four Pirates were also named to the Academic All-AMC team and sophomore setter Gabriela Garcia was named to the Honorable Mention All-AMC team. On the men’s side in his first year leading the program, the Pirates went 16-15 overall and 8-4 in MAMVIC West play, which earned them a tie with Missouri Baptist for the MAMVIC West Conference regular season title. He also coached one of the pre-miere outside hitters in the NAIA game in 2010, as junior Fray Luis Fajardo Arteaga was one of only 10 players named to the American Vol-leyball Coaches Association, NAIA Men’s Volleyball All-America Team. In his two seasons as a head women’s volleyball coach, Mischka is 19-48 and including his one sea-son as a men’s head coach, his ca-reer record is, 35-63. Mischka came to Park from Kan-sas Wesleyan University, where in 2008, he coached the Coyotes to a semifinal appearance in the Kan-sas Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament and five wins in the

team’s last nine matches of the ‘08 campaign. He also coached one first-team All-KCAC performer, as well as one Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete in 2008.

Before Kansas Wesleyan, Mischka was an assis-tant coach at NCAA Division-III Saint Mary’s Univer-sity in Winona, Minn., where he was responsible for all aspects of the program, and was a major part of the recruiting process. In his two-plus seasons

at SMU, the Cardinals rebounded from a 10-19 record in 2006 to a 17-12 overall mark in 2007.

Mischka has also been strongly involved in the USA Volleyball Junior Olympic program for the last five years, spending the past two with the

Southern Minnesota Volleyball pro-gram. During those two years, he

has served as head coach of the 17-elite team that finished the 2007 season 35-22 and was 34th out of

64 teams at the AAU Nationals in Or-lando, Fla.

Before Saint Mary’s, Mischka was an assistant coach at Graceland University, where he

worked with both the men’s and women’s programs for two seasons. Mischka played two years at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point where he was co-captain, player-coach and team treasurer for the Pointers’ NIR-SA collegiate club team. While at UWSP, he received NIRSA Club National Championships All-National Team honors as a setter. Mischka then transferred to Graceland where he played for two seasons as setter and right side hitter for the Yellow jackets before graduating in 2006 with a double-major in Philosophy and Religion. He has just obtained his Masters of Humanities degree from Tiffin University in Ohio, with a focus on Philosophy and Religious Studies.

Jenn Lee will embark in her second year on the volleyball coaching staff at Park University, coming to the Pirates after a

successful playing career in both volleyball and basketball at Kansas Wesleyan Univer-

sity. Lee was a member of the Coyote volleyball squad in 2008 under current Park head coach Rick Mischka where she served as the team’s setter, averaging seven assists per game with 11 matches of 30 assists or more and 874 total assists during the 2008 season. She also finished her senior campaign with 41 kills and 12 service aces, and defensively, Lee was third on the team in digs, averaging 2.7 per game and totaling 342 on the year. Lee played for the Kansas Wesleyan basketball program in the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons under head coach Gordon Re-imer, scoring 117 points in two seasons while passing out 52 as-sists in the Coyote backcourt. She was a 71-percent career free-throw shooter for the Coyotes and defensively, she picked up 30 steals in two seasons at KWU. Prior to her three-year, two-sport career at Kansas Wesleyan, Lee played at Antelope Valley College in Lancaster, Calif., where she was an all-conference basketball and volleyball player, help-ing the Marauder basketball team to the 2005 California State Fi-nal Four. Lee holds a bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Kansas Wesleyan and she is currently pursuing a master’s de-gree from Park in Healthcare Leadership.

Jenn LeeAssistant Coach • Second Season

Brett Ferguson is in his second year as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s volleyball programs at Park

University, joining the Pirate programs after a year away from the Parkville campus.

In 2008, Ferguson served as a volunteer assistant coach with the UMKC volleyball program and head coach Geno Frugoli. Ferguson helped coach the Kangaroos to 12 wins, and UMKC had many individual honors in Ferguson’s lone season with the program, including 10 academic all-conference honorees and an all-freshman team honoree in the Summit League. Ferguson is a 2008 graduate of Park University, playing on the Pirate men’s volleyball squad from 2005 to 2008. While play-ing for the Pirates, Ferguson helped the team reach the NAIA Na-tional Tournament in each of his four seasons. In 2008, he helped lead Park to the NAIA National Invitational Tournament Championship, while the team was the national run-ner-up during his junior campaign when it finished with a 30-3 overall record. During his four years at the school, the libero/de-fensive specialist helped the Pirates to a 102-16 overall record, appearing in 34 matches and in 64 games during his career. Ferguson holds a degree in social studies and history from Park and during his time as a student in Parkville, he was an ac-tive member of the Park Zeta Omicron (Phi Alpha Theta) Chapter, serving as the organization’s president during his junior and senior years.

• Park had one all-conference honoree in the AMC in sophomore setter/right-side hitter Gabriela Gar-cia, who was named Honorable Mention All-American Midwest Conference. Garcia was also one of four academic all-conference honorees for the Pirates, joined by Bethany Buehler, Crystal Cole and Mariana Vogado.

• The Pirates rounded out the season with two national honorees, as Bethany Buehler and Crystal Cole were named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes, each earning the NAIA’s highest academic honor for the first time in their volleyball careers.

Park University calls Parkville, Mo., and the Greater Kansas City area home, offering students the features

of both small-town life and the flashing lights of a big city. With a population of more than 4,000, Parkville allows students the small-town lifestyle and tightly knit community often times associated with small college athlet-ics and the NAIA. Originally a trading post on the Mis-souri River, Parkville grew as Kansas City boomed in the late 1800s, which included the founding of Park University. Both the University and the city get their names from Col. George S. Park, who played a key role in the early development of the area. Today, Parkville’s historic downtown district, coupled with new shopping areas to the north and east gives Park University students two great entertainment opportu-nities within the area. Parkville sits within the Northland of the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area, which encompasses 15 counties, nine of which are in Missouri and six across the state line in Kansas. The Northland is lo-cally referred to as “north of the river.” Con-tained wholly within Missouri, it encom-passes portions of Clay County including the northern half of Kansas City, Mo., and the cities of Parkville, Liberty, North Kan-

sas City and Gladstone. Kansas City is situated at the conflu-ence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers, often referred to as Kaw Point, straddling the state border between the two states. The Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area, anchored by Kansas City, Mo., is the 29th largest in the United States, with an estimated population just over 2 million. A tradition-rich city known for its bar-becue and storied sports history, Kansas City is currently home to Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals, the Kan-sas City Chiefs of the National Football League, Major League Soccer’s Kansas City Wizards and the Kansas Speedway, which hosts two NASCAR and IRL events throughout the year including one Nextel Cup Series event in the fall. Kansas City is also home to the Kan-sas City T-Bones independent league baseball franchise and the Kansas City Ex-plorers of World Team Tennis. The Sprint Center and the Power & Light District in the downtown area is one of the region’s top entertainment areas. The Sprint Center also houses the College Basketball Experi-ence, which includes the College Basket-ball Hall of Fame. A few blocks away sits Municipal Auditorium, home to the Buf-falo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basket-ball Tournament. In 2010, Park University

made its second appearance in four sea-sons and its fourth overall appearances in the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship, beat-ing Georgetown (Ky.) College in the first round, 83-75, before falling to Biola (Calif.) University in the second round. Addition-ally, the National Association of Intercolle-giate Athletics moved its offices downtown in the summer of 2007. Kansas City is also known for its his-toric shopping districts, including Westport and the Country Club Plaza, which is one of the world’s largest outdoor shopping areas designed for motor-vehicle traffic. Commonly referred to as “The Plaza,” it is home to one of the nation’s largest holiday light displays between Thanksgiving and January. In the Northland, Zona Rosa has become a popular shopping district, while Town Center and The Legends at Village West keep shoppers occupied in Kansas.

BEST VALUE, NATIONWIDE Park University has been named as the top ranked value among private colleg-es and universities by Parents & Colleges, an online resource for parents of college-bound students. Park was ranked No. 1 in the category “Top 10 Best Value Private Colleges and Universities.” According to Parents & Colleges, insti-

tutions included on this list offer a diversity of degrees, have affordable tuitions and/or offer generous financial aid, and report the highest SAT or ACT scores for this incom-ing class. Park was cited as offering “both proximity to big-city excitement and the safe, relaxed atmosphere of a small town. The 2,000-strong undergraduate stu-dent body represents 50 states and 100 countries, and the school prides itself on its diversity and global outlook. Tuition for full-time undergraduates is a fraction of other private institutions, and average class size and student-to-faculty ratio are low.”

CLAUDE W. ENGLISHDiRECTOR OF ATHLETiCS • 15TH YEAR

Claude English is in his 15th year as Park Universi-ty’s Director of Athletics, serving in the role since January of 1996.

Prior to 2010-11, English was honored for his ser-vice as an athletics administrator by being inducted into the McLendon Minority Athletics Administrators Hall of Fame, June 23, 2010, in Anaheim, Calif., representing the NAIA in a group of seven individuals honored by the John McLendon Minority Scholarship Foundation. The Foundation supports the John McLendon Memo-rial Minority Postgraduate Scholarship Awards and is presented to senior-level minority students who intend to pursue a graduate degree in athletics administration. English was joined in the 2010 McLendon Hall of Fame induction class by Percy Bates, Bernie Bickerstaff, Howard Gentry, Sr., Michael Haynes, Rafer Johnson and Don New-combe, while a second group of Pioneer Award winners was also honored. That group included Wisconsin AD Barry Al-varez, Ernie Davis, Mike Garrett, Tom Goss, Dan Guerrero, Charles Harris, Tommy Hawkins, Kim Ng, Fritz Pollard, Burl Toler and Tyrone Willingham. English began his affiliation with Park University in the 1992-93 men’s basketball season, coaching the Pirates through the end of the 2004-05 campaign. For his final 10 seasons at the helm of the Park men’s basketball program, English also assumed the duties of Director of Athletics, a position he will continue into his 15th year in the 2010-11 aca-demic year. During his tenure as Park’s Director of Athletics, English has guided the addition of two spring sports – baseball and women’s golf – in addition to facility upgrades throughout the department of athletics. Park’s facility upgrades under English’s watch be-gan with the 1,500-seat Julian Field, home to Park University men’s and women’s soccer, followed by the 1,200-seat Breckon Sports Center, constructed in 2000 to become the home of Park University’s men’s and women’s basketball programs, as well as its men’s and women’s volleyball programs. Breckon Sports Center houses administrative offices and two domes – one for competition and one for practice. Recent upgrades to Park’s softball and baseball facilities have also come under English’s watch, including new dugouts at the Park University Softball Complex, as well as new bleachers and

game-scoring facilities at Comfort Field, the home of Park University baseball. English is the winningest coach in Park University men’s basketball history, compiling 182 wins to push his overall win total to 227. From 1981 to 1984, English was the head men’s basketball coach at his alma mater, Rhode Island, where he was named Atlantic-10 Conference Coach of the Year in the 1981-82 season. His coaching tenure at Park was high-

lighted by the Pirates’ run to the NAIA Divi-sion I Men’s Basketball Tournament semifinal

round in 1997-98, which ended with a school-record mark of 27-8. English was honored at the national tournament with the Charles A. Krigel Award for outstanding sportsmanship, while his team was awarded the Dr. James Naismith-Emil

S. Liston Sportsmanship Award for the team rec-ognized as most sportsmanlike at the tourney. After a stellar collegiate playing career for Christian College in Dallas, Texas, and the Univer-sity of Rhode Island, English was selected in the NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers where he played the 1970-71 season. English also played in the Eastern Basketball Association for the Hart-ford Capitals, the affiliate team for the Philadel-phia 76ers. In 1973-74, English won the Eastern Basketball Association Championship with the Capitals. He was a three-year captain at Hart-ford. As Director of Athletics at Park, the Pirates have captured 47 conference championships, and in each of his 14 previous seasons as athletics director, at least one Park program has advanced

to NAIA postseason play each year. Also during his run as Director of Athletics, 77 student-athletes have been named NAIA All-Americans, and 161 student-athletes have earned Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete honors. In 2008-09, Park University’s department of athletics carried an overall grade point average better than 3.0, and the Pirates earned a school record seven NAIA scholar teams, marking more than half of the department’s programs posting a team GPA of 3.0 or better.

32 The home of Park University’s vol-leyball and basketball programs is the 1,200-seat Breckon Sports

Center, located on the north side of the University’s Parkville Campus. Named for former Park University president Dr. Donald J. Breckon and comprised of two concrete, monolithic domes, Breckon Sports Center is home to Park University’s men’s and women’s volleyball contests, as well as men’s and women’s basketball contests, in its West Dome, while the East Dome serves as a practice facility for both volleyball pro-grams as well as baseball, softball and soccer if weather forces the Pirates in-side. The East Dome’s floor surface is a sport-court material marked for volley-ball, while the West Dome is marked for both volleyball and basketball and includes seating for more than 1,000 spectators. In 2008-09, the Pirate volleyball and basketball programs combined for 25 wins on Park’s home court, which host-ed the NAIA Men’s Volleyball National Invitational Tournament for the second-straight year. In 2009-10, Park’s basketball and volleyball programs claimed 22 victories inside Breckon Sports Center, including 11 by the men’s basketball program, which used its home-court advantage to finish second in the AMC, earning a trip to the 2010 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship. Breckon Sports Center also hosted a nationally televised event in 2010, when the College Fanz Game of the Week traveled to Parkville on Jan. 30 for the basketball games between Park and McKendree. In addition to serving as home to four Park athletic programs, Breckon Sports Center also houses the administrative offices for Park University athletics, including office space for administrative

staff and both volleyball and basketball programs.
