    RYAN BAY - HEAD COACH

Before serving at Bacone, Bay spent from 2003-05 as the head coach at William Woods (Mo.) University. During his inaugural season, Bay guided the program to its first winning season in school history. In his second year at the helm, Bay defeated seven NAIA nationally ranked opponents in route to qualifying for the Regional Tournament, a first for the program.

Bays accomplishments dont just stop on the field, they also carry over to the classroom. In his six years as a head coach, he has raised the academic bar and improved his teams grade point average by a large margin.

A native of Perry, Bay also has been an as-sistant coach at Northern Oklahoma College-Enid, serving as a hitting/outfield coach and recruiting coordinator from 2001-02. In 2002, the Jets finished in third place in the Junior College World Series.

While in Enid during the summers of 2001 and 2002, he was the head coach of the Enid Pas-timers, a collegiate summer league team.

Bay played his prep ball at Perry High School under current Northern Oklahoma College-Enid head coach Raydon Leaton. He was a four-year starter and two-time all-conference performer in the Heart of America Conference as an outfielder at Missouri Valley College. During his junior year, Bay led the conference in stolen bases with 39.

Bay received his bachelors of science in 1999 from Missouri Valley College and holds a masters degree in education from Northwestern Oklahoma State University, which he earned in 2002. Bay resides in Alva with his wife of 10 years, Denise, who is currently the special events coordinator at Northwestern. They have a six-year old son Bryer.

Ryan Bay will begin his second season as the head coach of the Ranger baseball program. During his first season, the Northwestern Okla-homa State baseball team experienced one of the biggest turnarounds in school history, going from eight wins to 26 in 2009. Bay is just the fifth head baseball coach to lead Northwestern over the past 40 years.

Bay and the Rangers are on track to take another significant step in the rebuilding process during the 2010 season. This team has the experience and depth to continue to build and improve upon the foundation laid by the 2009 squad, Bay stated.

Bay had a successful three-year reign at Bacone College. During the 2008 season, Bay led Bacone College to a 41-14 overall record and as high as an 18th ranking in the NAIA. Bay joined Bacone during the 2006 season and spurred a 20-game turnaround from the previous season, with a 29-19 record. During his second season, he finished with a 35-21 record and won the Red River Athletic Conference North Division Title, the first in the schools history.

  • Pete Nesseralla will begin his second season as Northwesterns assistant baseball coach. Nesseralla returned to Northwestern Oklahoma State after 17 years of working in player development in the New England area.

A proven recruiter, who recruited Northwesterns only two-time All-American Tom Zanca, Nesseralla is the recruiting coordinator and hitting coach in addition to being the assistant coach. Nesseralla has sent more than a dozen hitters into the Major League Baseball Draft and has several former players in the minor leagues.

During his stint away from Northwestern Oklahoma State, the Braintree, Mass., native, has worked at The South Shore Baseball Club in Hingham, Mass., with former Ranger Rick Delvecchio. He worked both on individual instruction and coached The South Shore Baseball Clubs highly successful Seadogs AAU program. Nesseralla also coached his former

Throughout his career, he blasted 45 home runs, had 202 runs batted in, racked up 40 hit by pitches and stole 50 bases, while holding a .386 average.

Nesseralla still shares the Northwestern single game record for most home runs in a game with three against New Mexico State and shares the record for most runs batted in during a game with nine.

Nesseralla earned a bachelors degree in health and physical education from Northwestern and currently is working on his masters degree in education and is an

  • appeared twice. Oklahoma Christian, Wayland Baptist, Southern Nazarene and John Brown also have made appearances in the national tournament.

In mens golf, Oklahoma City won the national championship in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007 and was the runner-up in 1991. Oklahoma Christian was runner-up in 2001 and won it all in 2009, when four SAC teams were in the final top 12. Wayland Baptist was runner-up in 2007.

Southern Nazarene won the womens golf titles in 1999 and 2002, with OCU finishing as runner-up in 2001, 2003 and 2004 before claiming the 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 national crowns.

Over a span from 1993-2002, Oklahoma City was in the national softball cham-pionship game 10 times, winning it all in 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002 and again in 2007. They also were runner-up in 1986. OCU has reached the national tournament a national-record 19 times. Lubbock Christian threw its hat in the ring in 2008 and came away with a national title. St. Gregorys was the national runner-up in 2009. Oklahoma Baptist has made it to three tournaments, while Oklahoma Christian has made it twice. The SAC carries an impressive 129-52 record at the national tournament.

Oklahoma Christian won the mens tennis national title in 2003 and Oklahoma City claimed the national championship in a four-year run from 1998-2001. The OCU men were also runners up in 1994 and 1995.

In womens tennis, Oklahoma City was a national runner-up in 1999.

Each year the national championships bear out what the member institutions believe: the Sooner Athletic Conference is simply the best small college confer-ence in America.

What began as a basketball con-ference has become a dominant grouping of some of the best athletic programs in the NAIA.

The Sooner Athletic Confer-ence began in 1977-78 with Bethany Nazarene College (now Southern Nazarene University),

Oklahoma Baptist University, Oklahoma Christian University, Phillips Uni-versity and the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma. Only one of those charter members is no longer with the conference, which has since added to its strength.

John Brown University has twice been an expansion team in the confer-ence, joining the league in 1980 and then re-joining the SAC in 1995 after a 12-year absence.

Oklahoma City University dropped out of the ranks of NCAA Division I in 1985 and took up residence in the SAC, beginning in the 1985-86 season.

Lubbock Christian University and Wayland Baptist University left their inde-pendent status behind and were admitted as the first Texas members of the SAC in 1994, replacing USAO, which opted to leave the league that year.

St. Gregorys University, applied for membership and was granted associate member status and competed for the conference crown for the first time in 1998-99.

Charter member Phillips University was closed in the summer of 1998 due to financial instability.

USAO, which had dropped out and joined the Red River Athletic Conference, applied for and was granted membership in the SAC during the 1999-2000 school year.

Northwestern Oklahoma State University was added to the conference as a full member in the 2001-02 academic year.

Mid-America Christian University and Rogers State joined the league and became full members in 2007-08.

The Sooner Athletic Conference has had a proud heritage in the NAIA. In mens basketball, a SAC team has played for the national championship 13 times and has been in the finals in 13 of the last 17 seasons. USAO won the national crown in 2002, beating Oklahoma Baptist in an all-SAC title tilt, John Brown won the 2005 crown and Oklahoma City won it all in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1996, 2007 and 2008.

In womens basketball, SAC member Southern Nazarene won four NAIA titles from 1994-97, with OCU going on a four-year run of its own, winning championships from 1999-2002. SNU then upset OCU in the 2003 and 2004 title games. Lubbock Christian was the talk of the 2006 tournament, advancing to the championship game. In 2009, both Oklahoma Baptist and Oklahoma City reached the national semifinals. OBU has been to the tourna-ment for each of the last 13 years, which is the longest active stretch.

Additionally, Oklahoma Christian has been a long-time regular at the NAIA Tournament and seven SAC schools were in the 32-team tournament in 2004. The SAC has had at least four entrants in each national tourna-ment since 1997 and has had five or more entrants in each of the last five seasons.

But basketball is just the tip of the iceberg of success in the SAC.

In track, Oklahoma Baptist won the 2005 and 2007 womens indoor national title and both OBU and Lubbock Christian have won national mens track championships in the 1990s, with the Bison adding another outdoor mens title in 2007. Wayland Baptist captured both the womens indoor and outdoor national titles in 2008 and 2009.

Lubbock Christian won every mens cross country national title from 1990-97.

In baseball, Lubbock Christian won the national title in 1983 2009 and Okla-homa City has reached the finals in every season from 2002 until winning the title in 2005, among their league-best nine appearances. OBU also has
