– An ex-husband entered the Ramada Inn Hotel and Conference Center, shot his wife and a coworker

– Due to former issues with the ex-husband, the employee had active protection from stalking orders

– From a legal standpoint, she did what she should have to protect herself

• Workplace Fear• Employers, employees and citizens react

– Salina, KS is a small community with just under 50,000 residents– Feelings of fear and vulnerability rocked the workforce– Numerous calls fielded by the Salina Police Department

• Salina Human Resource Management Assn. Adopts Community Initiative

• Chapter Strategic Planning– Needs assessment via survey– Requests for workplace violence prevention training– Collaboration

• Collaboration in the community• Salina Police Department, City of Salina, SHRM chapter

– City manager asked police department to provide community outreach– SHRMA performing strategic planning, identified funds for community

initiative– HR Director for City of Salina was SHRMA chapter president– Meeting was scheduled to identify format, venue, speakers– Workplace violence training seminar developed to provide community with

information and prevention tips– Included perspectives from law enforcement, human resources, mental

health, domestic violence victim advocacy, and victim

– Law enforcement involvement allowed usage of Kansas Highway Patrol Training Academy auditorium at no charge
