Artist Sarah Lovett has been producing amazing, evocative artwork for the Fremont Solstice Parade since 1989. Sarah was introduced to Peter Toms, Barabara Luecke and Sarah Robertson who had come up from the Santa Barabara area to start a Solstice Parade here in Fremont. “I saw a slide show of the Santa Barbara parade with very fun creatures and floats. I was making papier mache masks at the time, and it seemed a good fit. I jumped right in.”

Sarah received a 2010 McKay Grant to produce “Dogody”, a playful canine puppet made from reed, plastic corrugation, and lightweight fabric. The original idea for this creature came from a series of dreams, where the artist was visited by a white puppy who, through it’s playfulness would induce a healing experience. Sarah has spent at least 150 hours creating the large dog puppet, and volunteers have added another 60 hours to help. Sarah was inspired to honor her mythical, dream companion, and all animal companions, with this amazing parade art.

Sarah says “My favorite part of being a parade artist is the build. Anyone can participate. Everyone becomes an artist for a short time and the result is a spectacle of creative involvement; it’s a folk art extravaganza. I love making large silly objects.”

Look for “Dogody” bouncing and playing fetch along the parade route. More of Sarah Lovett’s incredible cane and paper artwork can be viewed at The ‘5 Spot’ restaurant in Queen Anne.

*2010 McKay Grantees: The Dave McKay Parade Grant Program supports new art and performance for the Fremont Solstice Parade. Dave was a celebration artist who brought his thoughtful intention, master costume-design skills, and deep attention to detail and craftsmanship to everything he created. He believed art should be a part of everyone’s life. This year, the Fremont Arts Council awarded $4500 to seven artists and artist teams, in his honor.

Your donations to support the Solstice Parade help make this

grant program sustainable.
