While the 2010 edition of the Tribe fea-tures one of the program’s smallest rosters in recent history with just 13 gymnasts, the abundance of talent is a source of great optimism as the team enters the upcom-ing campaign. Led by a trio of seniors and a five-member junior class, this year’s squad features an exciting blend of experienced and determined gymnasts who possess the abilities to achieve its goals. Head Coach Mary Lewis, a two-time ECAC Coach of the Year, has high expectations for the upcom-ing season and is confident that the team is prepared for the challenges that lie ahead. “As is the case every season, our number one goal is to win the ECAC championship,” Lewis said. “Additionally, after earning the best finish in school history with a third-place showing at the USAG Nationals last season, we are setting our sights on win-ning the team title this year. “This team is very talented, and we have an opportunity to accomplish quite a bit. In order to reach our goals, however, everyone must remain committed and continue to develop mental toughness so that we can overcome any obstacles that may arise.” To do so, the squad will rely heavily on the leadership of its senior co-captains Ali Medeiros and Jen Stack. Important con-tributors during the past three seasons, both have demonstrated strong leadership skills both in and out of the gym throughout their careers. “Jen and Ali are both very strong lead-ers,” Lewis said. “While they both have very different leadership styles, they balance each other very well. There is a cohesiveness between the two of them, and they both possess a strong desire to help the team achieve its goals.” Testing the Tribe this year will be a chal-lenging schedule that features a number of national-level programs as well as some of the top teams in the region. In addition to squaring off against a tough slate of league opponents, the College will take on 2009 NCAA Regional qualifiers North Carolina, North Carolina State, Maryland and New Hampshire. Stack will play a key role in determining the team’s success this season, as she will once again be one of its top performers on bars – an event Lewis views as the squad’s strongest. A two-time USAG first-team All-American on bars, she is very consistent and will likely leadoff the Tribe’s lineup. Bars will be her lone event this year, however, as a knee injury has forced her to no longer compete on vault. Like Stack, Medeiros will serve as a co-captain and will be a fixture in the bars lineup. After missing the first half of last sea-son with a shoulder injury, she was limited in ’09 but should be fully recovered for her senior season. A dynamic performer in the event, she earned USAG All-America honors as both a freshman and a sophomore. The Hudson, Ohio native will also be a strong

presence in the beam lineup, as she hopes to be a repeat all-conference honoree (sec-ond-team selection in ’08). Rounding out the senior class is Steph-anie Bevan, who will train on vault and floor but will primarily focus on beam. Af-ter garnering all-conference honors on the apparatus as a freshman and a sophomore, she will look to regain that form after being hampered by injuries last year. Having un-dergone surgery during the offseason, she hopes to stay healthy during the upcoming campaign and will likely anchor the lineup. Bevan will also be counted on for her lead-ership, as she serves as one of the team’s Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) reps and is the organization’s secretary. One of the Tribe’s most consistent per-formers on vault, beam and floor last season, junior Dina McNaughton will continue to be counted on for significant contributions in 2010. The Stoneham, Mass., native posted the team’s top RQS on beam and floor last season and will likely leadoff the beam line-up again. In addition to working to upgrade her tumbling pass on floor, she also expects to upgrade her starting value on vault. Despite battling a groin injury last year, junior Karla Bercaw registered a breakout season in 2009 by earning first-team USAG All-America honors on vault and second-team all-conference distinction on beam. She will be looking for even greater success in both of those events this season, as she works toward a 10.0 start value on vault and a new dismount on beam. A strong tumbler, Bercaw will also likely make an impact on floor were she will vie for the leadoff spot. One of the Tribe’s top performers on beam, junior Melissa Cream has garnered all-conference accolades in each of her first two seasons. Also excellent on floor, she is looking to upgrade two – if not all three – of her tumbling passes and should be a sig-nificant force in this year’s lineup. As was the case last year, Cream will also be a fixture in the bars lineup where she is looking to up-

grade her dismount. A fixture in the Tribe’s bars lineup last season, junior Taryn Saunders will once again be a key contributor in the event. As she recovers from offseason surgery, she will also resume training beam -- an event she competed in twice last season. Saun-ders will look to upgrade her start value on bars this season, as she has shown dramatic improvement and continues to become more confident and consistent. Joining the Tribe roster this season is Penn State transfer junior Teenie Beck. Al-though she did not compete as a sopho-more, she appeared in 13 meets in various events as a freshman at PSU. Having already posted career highs better than 9.800 on vault, bars and floor, Beck will train in all-around and will likely have a chance to qualify for regionals. After posting one of the best freshman seasons in the program’s history a year ago, sophomore Kristin Milardo will look to pick up where she left off last season. Honored as the ECAC Rookie of the Year, the Colo-rado Springs, Colo., native placed 12th in all-around at the NCAA Southeast Regional and garnered USAG Collegiate First Team All-America honors in all-around, vault and floor. After retooling her routines in a num-ber of events, her sophomore season could prove to be even more successful than her rookie campaign. In addition to the solid nucleus of re-turning letterwinners, the Tribe adds a quar-tet of talented freshmen to the squad this season. Lindsey Nichol, Morgan Stephens and Molly Walsh will all train in all-around, while Jenny Ware will focus on vault, beam and floor. After undergoing ankle surgery last year Nichol is looking to make a full recovery pri-or to the upcoming campaign. In addition to working on a 10.0 vault, she is working toward upgrading her difficulty on beam and should be a multiple double backer on floor. Like Nichol, Stephens also underwent surgery last year (foot) but is hoping to be at full strength this season. While her strongest events will likely be vault, floor and beam, she also has potential to be a solid contribu-tor on bars. Walsh is an outstanding competitor who could step in as an all-arounder during her rookie season. In addition to training a 10.0 start value on vault, she should also have an immediate impact on beam and floor. Earn-ing a spot in the bars lineup will be deter-mined by her ability to continue improving consistency. After suffering a stress fracture at the end of last season, Ware will train primarily floor and vault with limited time on beam. In addition to being very strong on vault, she is a powerful tumbler who will be counted on to help replace one of the spots in the floor lineup vacated by the graduation of three seniors.

During Mary Lewis’ 16-year tenure as the head women’s gymnastics coach at Wil-liam and Mary, the Tribe program has dis-tinguished itself with competitive success in the gym and academic excellence in the classroom. Evidence of the success can be found in the program’s four Eastern Colle-giate Athletic Conference Championships and the numerous national scholar-athlete citations earned by Tribe gymnasts under Lewis’ guidance. A two-time ECAC Coach of the Year, Lewis’ four conference championships in-cluded three consecutive titles from 2001-03. In addition to the collective success ex-perienced by the team, a number of Tribe gymnasts have also garnered individual accolades under Lewis’ tutelage. Since tak-ing over the program in 1995, Lewis has coached 11 different gymnasts to 16 total NCAA Regional appearances. Additionally, Lewis’ gymnasts have claimed 16 individual ECAC titles. Under Lewis’ guidance, six gymnasts in the last six seasons have competed in NCAA Regionals. Freshman Kristin Milardo, the 2009 ECAC Rookie of the Year, added her name to the distinguished group of ac-complished gymnasts last season when she placed 12th in all-around at the Southeast Regional. Former standouts Stevie Wald-man (2007, 2008) and Tricia Long (2006, 2007), the 2005 ECAC Rookie of the Year, both competed at the event twice, while Suzanne Chaves and Emma Cross both qualified for the NCAA Regional in 2004. In addition to Milardo’s appearance at the 2009 NCAA Regional, W&M garnered a number of other accolades last season. Mi-lardo earned a pair of USAG Collegiate First Team All-America certificates on vault and floor, while junior Jen Stack and sophomore Karla Bercaw garnered first team-honors on bars and vault, respectively. The impressive performances highlighted what was an ex-tremely impressive showing for the Tribe at the national event, as the team earned the program’s best showing at the competition with a third-place finish. W&M also experienced tremendous

success at the 2009 ECAC Championship, as four Tribe gymnasts earned all-confer-ence accolades. Milardo captured first-team honors in all-around while garnering second-team distinction on vault, bars and floor. Stack nearly claimed the individual championship on bars with a second-place finish to earn first-team recognition, while Bercaw and sophomore Melissa Cream both took garnered second-team honors on beam. The 2008 season also provided a num-ber of highlights, as Waldman not only qualified for the NCAA Regional for the sec-ond consecutive season but also claimed the all-around championship at the USAG Collegiate Nationals. Waldman also earned first-team All-America certificates on bars and beam, while Stack and Ali Medeiros claimed top-10 finishes and first-team distinction on bars. The team piled up a bevy of all-conference accolades as well, as Waldman garnered three first-team hon-ors and was the champion on bars, while Stack earned first-team accolades on vault and bars. Stephanie Bevan and Medeiros claimed first-team certificates on beam and bars, respectively, while the squad also picked up four second-team honors. During the 2007 season, Lewis sent two gymnasts to the NCAA Southeast Regional, as Long and Waldman both qualified as in-dividual participants for the competition. It marked the fourth time in her career that Lewis had two gymnasts qualify for region-als. Long made her second career appear-ance at regionals as an all-arounder, while Waldman became the 10th different Tribe gymnast under Lewis to reach regionals. W&M also made its second-straight ap-pearance in the USAG Collegiate Nation-als in 2007, and the Tribe once again took home a number of individual hon-ors. Waldman and Christina Padilla earned USAG first-team All-Amer-ica honors with Waldman getting the distinction on floor and Padilla receiving the accolades on both vault and bars. Additionally, Long (all-around) and Medeiros (bars) were named USAG second-team All-Americans. During the previ-ous season, the Tribe made its first trip to USAGs under Lewis, earn-ing a fourth-place finish in the team competition. Tribe gymnasts garnered nine different USAG All-America honors, including Brit-tany Gibbs and Jess Randall, who shared the USAG individual na-tional championships in the floor exercise. Following the 2006 season, Lewis was recognized by her peers as the ECAC Coach of the Year for the second time in her career. That season, the Tribe earned a second-place finish at the ECAC Championship, the program’s best finish since winning three-straight league titles from 2001 to 2003.

Lewis also saw Tribe gymnasts earn 11 all-conference awards, including an individual vault conference title by Brittany Gibbs. Ad-ditionally, Christina Padilla was honored as the ECAC Scholar Athlete of the Year, while seven gymnasts earned ECAC All-Academic Team honors. In addition to success in the gym, Lewis has stressed the importance of academ-ics. This is evident each year when the Na-tional Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches honors student-athletes for su-perb academic performances. During the 2009 season three more Tribe gymnasts earned NACGC national scholar-athlete awards, including Lauren Jackson, Sarah Jacobson and Megan Vincent. During the last five seasons, 16 Tribe gymnasts have earned the honor. Additionally, Waldman was recognized for her excellence in the classroom by being selected as an ECAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2008. Lewis has been coaching collegiate gymnastics since 1991, when she was the head coach at Longwood College for the 1991-92 season. She joined the staff at James Madison University in 1992 and served as a graduate assistant until 1994, before taking over the program at the Col-lege. Lewis graduated Magna Cum Laude from CNU in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in governmental administration and public management. She completed her master’s degree at JMU in kinesiology and adult fitness in May of 1994, graduat-ing Summa Cum Laude. Lewis spent this summer working at the N.C. State Camp with campers rang-ing from beginner to Level 10. She resides in Newport News with her 14-year-old son, Zachary.

Having made a significant impact on the Tribe’s success during the past two seasons, former Tribe standout Jamie Weinfeldt returns for her third year as an assistant coach at the College. A 2004 graduate of W&M, Weinfeldt has an extensive back-ground in training and administration. In addition to serving as the recruiting coordinator and primary contact for fundraising, she primarily works with coaching the beam line-up. Weinfeldt also assists Lewis in coaching the floor exercise and aids with strength and conditioning. During her two seasons at the College, Weinfeldt has been instrumental in helping the program earn five all-conference honors on beam and a pair of all-league certificates on floor. Sophomores Melissa Cream and Karla Bercaw both garnered second-team All-ECAC distinction on beam last season, while freshman Kristin Milardo garnered first-team All-America and second-team all-conference accolades on floor. The 2009 season was also highlighted by the team’s impressive collec-tive performance on beam at the ECAC Championship when it posted a 48.550, the eighth-best score in program history. The mark also represented the Tribe’s second-best effort at the conference championship. During her first season as an assistant with the Tribe, Wein-feldt helped guide three W&M gymnasts to all-conference honors on beam. Stevie Waldman and Stephanie Bevan both garnered first-team distinction, while Cream received second-team accolades. Additionally, she helped Tricia Long earn sec-ond-team honors in the floor exercise. I’m very excited to have Jamie join the program,” head coach Mary Lewis said at the time of Weinfeldt’s hiring. “As a William and Mary graduate, she understands what it takes and what it truly means to be a student-athlete here. Her drive and passion for the program are just as strong as when she was a William and Mary gymnast.” Weinfeldt has also served as an adjunct faculty member for the department of Kinesiology during the past two years, teaching human anatomy labs. Weinfeldt returned to Williamsburg after completing grad-uate work at the George Washington University, where she earned a Master’s of Science Degree in Exercise Science in May 2007. While at GW, Weinfeldt was a graduate assistant for the Lerner Health and Wellness Center, while also serving as the Colonials women’s gymnastics meet director for two seasons. As the program’s meet director, she acted as a liaison be-tween the coaching staff and officials and handled all aspects of meet organization. Weinfeldt held a similar position at Penn State during the 2005 competitive season. Her primary responsibility as a graduate assistant at GW was personal training, designing and implementing individu-alized exercise programs for clients of all ages and physical abilities. Weinfeldt’s duties also included many administrative responsibilities, including supervising the undergraduate fit-ness center at GW, scheduling activities and student workers

and marketing programs that promoted health and fitness on campus. During her time in Northern Virginia, Weinfeldt also taught gymnasts of all levels at the Chantilly Academy of Gymnastics. She has also spent time during her summers working at the N.C. State Wolfpack and Woodward Gymnastics Camps super-vising staff members and instructing gymnasts. A native of New Jersey, Weinfeldt graduated from the Col-lege with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Kinesiology and helped lead the Tribe to three consecutive ECAC Champion-ships from 2001-03. Weinfeldt was an ECAC Individual Cham-pion on beam in 2001 and is the only Tribe gymnast ever to record two scores of 9.900 in the event. She qualified for the NCAA Southeast Regional as a freshman in 2001 and was a NACGC Scholastic All-American.

After being a member of the Tribe last season, Allie Wheeler will serve as a team manager during the 2010 campaign. While she will have multiple miscellaneous responsibilities, her pri-mary duties will include video taping practice and meets. Ad-ditionally, she will have administrative responsibilities and will provide an extra set of eyes in the gym. A native of Williamsburg, Wheeler joined the Tribe last season after a standout prep career with World Class Gymnas-tics. Her accolades include being an Eastern National qualifier and Eastern National vault champion. She also earned an all-around title at the state level.
